The only genuine causality of making Marvel 4 from a possibility to a probability, is we gotta show up to buy the Arcade Collection. Get Marvel vs Capcom back in the conversation again, make enough noise to get the attention of the powers that be and then take it from there. Is it a guarantee? No. Is it worth a shot? Absolutely.

Y'know, when you point out the history of how terrible relations were between Marvel(disney) and the devs, it kinda seems evident the system got changed as a result of somehow fumbling the commercial lightning that should have been bottled. UMvC3 & MvCi practically sandwiched Marvel movies when they were regarded at their peak.

A CvS collection imo is definitely happening. With Terry and Mai coming to SF6, I feel the writing is on the wall. So either that's the next fighting collection or the obscure 3dish Capcom fighters (star gladiator, power stone, rival schools, tech romancer, etc). Maybe even a SF EX collection at some point

It's also too early to even say whether that collection amounted to anything more, as it has only been two years since it came out - I wouldn't count on it though, as there's no indication that it sold very well. Darkstalkers is a niche franchise that last had a new entry nearly thirty years ago. MvC is a crossover with some of the most recognizable fictional characters on the planet, and the most recent entry wasn't even a decade ago. You can still find plenty of working MvC cabinets in local arcades around the world, but good luck finding Darkstalkers. It's a cult classic for people who consume fighting game content, but the only normal people who know what Darkstalkers is probably learned of its existence due to Morrigan being in MvC. There's also the added context that Darkstalkers is Capcom's to do with what they please, whereas with MvC their hands are tied by licensing agreements with Marvel. They can group as many ports of their cast-off franchises and put them out as they please, but the fact that they have gone to the lengths of renewing talks with an entirely separate company (one who their relationship with had soured, and one who is actively pursuing more success in the gaming industry) is more indicative of a potential future for this franchise. Game development these days is far too resource intensive for Capcom to be pumping out fighting games like they did in the 90's (and despite their current renaissance, fighting games still really aren't popular enough for concurrently running franchises), so even if they wanted to make a new Darkstalkers and thought it could be a viable product, they still wouldn't - because it would me MORE profitable to devote that dev time to something like MvC. The days of the passion project for a big company like Capcom are gone, and that's what it would have taken to get a new Darkstalkers. Ono tried and failed, but he's gone, and now so too are the chances of a new game. Darkstalkers is dead.
@@sjue316 he's not wrong though. Darkstalkers was all internal Capcom, it was cheap and easy for them to throw in a collection and put out - it didn't sell particularly well. MvC collection required significant licensing to get out, and will require significant sales to justify that release. But significant sales will also have Marvel and Capcom going, ""yeah, there's money here in the future"". Ultimately, as Max keeps pointing out, they're businesses, and they'll put money into what will make them money.

You can bet that this collection is not to get any number for themselves, and yes to deliver the sales number for Disney and get a lot of clauses in the proccess. Remember how Disney declared they didn't wanted any eSports around their brands and MvCI were included? Almost guaranteed Capcom will go after this permission too.
Well, X-Men 97 just came out and will get season 2, so chances are they saw this as an opportune time to rerelease these classics, especially with how the X-Men CotA used X-Men 93 designs and reprised some of the VAs. Keep that nostalgia train going!

@bigsealmode longer than that tbh. They would really need to check the sales and Capcom wouldn't want to let people down again. They'd work hard to give us a healthy roster, sick supers, assists, and make sure the animations look great. They would go all out so I would assume at most 3-5 years.

If it's only the arcade ports. Don't count on it selling that well. Casuals won't buy it. Minus The Punisher game, the rest of the collection only appeals to the FGC.
@sjue316 Street Fighter 30th sold 2.8 million and was all arcade versions of the games in question, in addition to being on most of the same platforms this compilation is on. This also had the advantage of debuting at a Nintendo Direct as opposed to a fighting game centered event like EVO or Capcom Cup, which means they immediately caught the widest net of casual fans while also attracting FGC audiences. This past Direct is already one of the most viewed in the entire history of those presentations. They have eyes on it, and MvC2 alone will probably be a major hook for both casual gamers and casual/hardcore Marvel fans, especially timing this right after X-Men 97

If the collection sells in the first month: - less than a million - then no shot - 1-3 million, then those talks might happen - 3 million plus, then MvC4 talks are definitely happening I'm not expecting anything at the moment. I think with the Marvel brand taking some big blows in the 2020s (lots of box office bombs, merch not selling, bad movies and shows), and Capcom on a hot streak probably opened the door for the collection to happen at all. I'm sure MvC4 talks are happening, but it relies heavily on sales of the collection. In the words of Scott Summers, Dreams don't die!

At the risk of the possibility of not getting the Avengers this time since they're done canonically in the MCU, and Spiderman is in a void stage in the MCU as well, and despite of what Maximilian thinks, I personally can portrait Disney trying to use this as a shill propaganda for the next MCU phase, and it'll be just X-men and Fantastic Four, but the all the Avengers are gone.

The Characters sound good! However, I want to see Characters from *Sengoku Basara* in a MVC4! I mean come on, it's badass and helluva addicting with all that hacking and slashing! So, for the ones in the base roster I want Yukimura Sanada Masamune Date Ieyasu Tokugawa Mitsunari Ishida Then, for DLC, the rest like Yoshitsune Minamoto, Motochika Chosokabe, Magoichi Saika, Kotaro Fumo, and perhaps Nobunaga Oda!

Sadly, can't confirm anything new, and according to him, they began planning on trying something new, but the soured relationship made their plans different. He did mention they were gonna do SF6 first, definitely, and he said that back when Season 4 was finishing up. Do note, he wasn't above being incorrect, and it's likely they made plans more than anything. STILL, I would say there's a good chance now they are working on it. Maybe it's not 80% done, or even 50%. But something tells me there's more. ALSO, I do remember someone mentioning that MVC4 is a thing and it was one of Capcom's partners, but no clue who.

If its more than 3 years nowadays you can bet that as you said substantial production has already gone into it. Making the collection less of a test and more a warm up. It being just a test kind of feels too reactionairy and unnesecary on second thought. Finding out MvC is popular only to still have to pivot into developing a title sounds like bad business practice. And finding out if theres an audience for MvC can be done in all kinds of more easy and effective ways like market research etc. People also thought Super Mario RPG was a test for Mario RPG games and they had to vote with their wallet. Not a half a year later Mario and Luigi Brotherhood is announced. Obviously having been in the works way longer.
@@mikev8746 Yeah, there's a good chance the development had started, and they just used the collection to drum up interest. The work is far from done, but they probably had enough evidence earlier to light up the development (and considering how the head of SF6 went ahead with SNK, it's probably been a thing since early as Season 5 of SFV).

I remember how SF4 back in the day took off and that kind of paved the way for what MvC3 would become. Not directly ofcourse, but still. We are back babyyyy, everything went as planned, Disney buys fox which allows them to support x-men again, their in house game studio Disney interactive fails, and now out sources their IP's. And Arcade 1up got what sales they needed to allow it be home consoles again. And x-men 97 and deadpool vs wolverine comes out. Talk about a perfect storm!
Darkstalkers situation is quite different from MvC. For better or worse. They don't have to go through any licensing hurdle to make a DS collection, they fully own it. And it have had several re-release before. And DS don't have the mainstream notoriety of Marvel characters, so the business side of Capcom is likely to refuse if someone in the company try to make a new game (like have happened in the past).
Darkstalkers is literally free for them to just vomit out the same 3 games (of which you'll actually play 1) every 5 years. This costs like actual money
Yeah. It reminds me of the recent interviews about getting Mai and Terry into Street Fighter 6. Nakayama-San kept saying it started with the Capcom/SNK poster collab at EVO in 2022, and the discussions that followed from there eventually led to them doing the upcoming crossover. I think something similar could happen with Capcom and Marvel since that door had to be open to get this collection approved.

Apparently they DID consider Howard briefly for the first Marvel vs Capcom... but they already had Norimaru (a Japanese comedian's character, like Borat) in the Japanese version because they had somehow gotten contractually obligated to include him in a fighting game and would rather pawn him off on MvC1 than have to put him in Street Fighter 3, so they went "nah we already have a joke character". Injustice, I know.
That '09 revival is partly the reason I'm watching this video right now.....just imagine millions more having that same experience with this collection....we are for sure getting a "TRUE" MVC3 successor down the pipeline...
We need to keep the hype low for now, because while the biggest obstacle no longer exists (Marvel and Capcom working together again), the collection needs to sell VERY well, not just “well” like the previous one, but VERY WELL. Also, a possible Marvel 4 needs to be a really good game that needs to please EVERYONE: like, have a really good cast (things like Phoenix Wright back, all the important X-Men, Megaman Classic and X back, all the Previous Darkstalkers back + Jon Talbain, Amiingo, Son Son and Ruby Heart, crazy stuff like that), good graphics and good gameplay. So we're not out of the woods yet!
He JUST said, in this exact video, that they have to let this collection breathe and have some time to sell before they even announce the next potential game. Even if it is in development, they won't be saying anything until next year at the least.

I take this a step further. I believe this nostalgia compilation is happening due to the damage that the Marvel brand has been hit with over the past four years, from the creative to Boseman’s blindsiding death to the blindsiding legal troubles of Majors. Depending on film rights, I believe there will be an X-Men vs. Street Fighter film or streaming series in the coming years. Disney is going to make a fuck-ton off of this compilation as well as Hugh Jackman’s return, and this crossover being turned into a film or series could be seen as a rabbit to pull out of the hat. Of particular note is that since 2002, Sony has been the exclusive distributor of all Spider-Man and Resident Evil films. So that’s a studio that’s already in bed with both Disney and Capcom.

It’s interesting that MvC is again possible when Capcom is the stronger brand. Even though we’re thirty years removed from Marvel’s crash, the powers that be have essentially given us the same situation, where the value of Marvel has dropped down due to mismanagement of the IP, and Capcom has had multiple big hits. Wonder if that’s going to lead to another Marvel renaissance in 15 years.

Due to the MVC collection feel like it could happen considering for like the equivalent of going through high school and graduating was how long the series has been dead for then the announcement of the collection happened which most likely means Capcom and Marvel/Disney had some sort of talk. I would love for it to mean a MVC4 is coming soon but I'd be perfectly fine with them putting out the collection then being like we ain't making another MVC game and this collection is a goodbye to MVC
Marvel vs Capcom existed in it's entirety because Marvel in the 90's was in decline and they were desperate for merchandising. They are in a similar position now so it's possible they could make an MVC5.
This is a _massive_ exaggeration. In no way, shape or form is Marvel now anywhere close to the state it was in the 90s. THey weren't "in decline", they _filed for bankruptcy_ . Marvel/Disney can easily course correct with Disney Plus (fewer shows) and their movies. They are still in good shape overall. They are not "desperate" for anything (right now, anyway; things _could_ get worse, but that's not the situation they're in right now).
The source who leaked accurate character descriptions of the SF6 roster a year before the images leaked, also said MVC4 was in the works but they were "Taking Their Time" with it, so its possible MVC4 has been in the works for a while now
As long as there's no story mode like in MvCI, (which I love it btw, regardless of what the majority says) and focus more on the multi-player like other fighting games and release new characters as DLC over time, I don't see why not. Definitely look forward to such a sequel in the coming future, but in the meantime, I wanna get the collection and try out the games I never got the chance to play!

Personally I'd rather see a reboot of the series. Gives people a way to temper expectations and gives the game more room to breath. Not to mention it gives them the excuse to bring back characters like captain commando, hayato, The x men and so on.
Why does there need to reboot to bring back old characters? It's not as though MvC series follows a story path. Much like Final Fantasy series, I'm pretty sure the various Vs. games (except _maybe_ for X-men vs. SF and MSH vs. SF, where MSF basically replaced XSF) are their own stories and have no connection to each other. Of course I could be wrong. But regardless, there's nothing stopping Capcom (not counting interference from Disney, which shouldn't be the case any more) from bringing back any old characters. The issue is to balance old ones with new ones when you only have so many slots.
MVCI was a soft reboot and everyone hated it. I loved it and thought the gameplay was great, but it needed more modes and stuff. It didn't bother me that X-Men, F4, and others didn't return. I guarantee if a new one comes out the FGC will hate that one too. They always do.

@@myriadmediamusings I hate to burst the bubble, but I think that would sell worse. This isn't the 90s. X-men doesn't have the same pull it did back then. If it doesn't have Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, and Cap, normies likely will pass. X-Men 97 doing well isn't hard. It's an incredibly low bar. D+ is terrible and everything on it isn't really worth watching. MVCI sold really well because of normies. I don't dislike either idea, but I'm not going to fool myself either. Especially when one show did moderately better than everything else on a streaming service.
If we do get another MvC, Miles, Kamala, & Nero are absolute must-haves for the roster. Hell, we almost got the first two at one point or another (UMvC3 for Miles, MvCI Season 2 for Kamala). As for MvC4’s odds, I think it’s more likely than people expect. Just don’t expect there to be a ton of X-Men, especially thanks to Sony‘s exclusivity contract for the X-Men. I’m pretty sure there’s a certain percentage of X-Men characters that other devs of Marvel games can’t go over until 2035, I think it was around 25-30%.
I recommend watching the video Simmons did where he explains how many copies of the MvC collection must sell to start the work for MvC4. Quite interesting stuff, whether you agree or not.
True infinite is technically MVC4 but considering that game and how it was recieved they may ignore Infinite and probably say it was a test or spin off due to it releasing at a dark time in Capcom and the next one is the official MVC4
For MVC4, Capcom will need to do a "Everyone is here" to get people excited. That means everyone from the series get to be in the starting roster; including new faces. Then you can start on DLC.
The possibility of there being a MVC 4 in the future is also much the same(probably) for Capcom vs SNK. Given the recent trailer announcement for season 2 dlc(Mai & Terry) and a new Fatal Fury coming out it is possible that it would happen.

The only genuine causality of making Marvel 4 from a possibility to a probability, is we gotta show up to buy the Arcade Collection. Get Marvel vs Capcom back in the conversation again, make enough noise to get the attention of the powers that be and then take it from there. Is it a guarantee? No. Is it worth a shot? Absolutely.

@@sjue316It shouldn't even have to be said that there is a massive gulf between the popularity of Marvel Vs Capcom and Darkstalkers, this is not even close to the same thing. It's also too early to even say whether that collection amounted to anything more, as it has only been two years since it came out - I wouldn't count on it though, as there's no indication that it sold very well.
Darkstalkers is a niche franchise that last had a new entry nearly thirty years ago. MvC is a crossover with some of the most recognizable fictional characters on the planet, and the most recent entry wasn't even a decade ago. You can still find plenty of working MvC cabinets in local arcades around the world, but good luck finding Darkstalkers. It's a cult classic for people who consume fighting game content, but the only normal people who know what Darkstalkers is probably learned of its existence due to Morrigan being in MvC.
There's also the added context that Darkstalkers is Capcom's to do with what they please, whereas with MvC their hands are tied by licensing agreements with Marvel. They can group as many ports of their cast-off franchises and put them out as they please, but the fact that they have gone to the lengths of renewing talks with an entirely separate company (one who their relationship with had soured, and one who is actively pursuing more success in the gaming industry) is more indicative of a potential future for this franchise.
Game development these days is far too resource intensive for Capcom to be pumping out fighting games like they did in the 90's (and despite their current renaissance, fighting games still really aren't popular enough for concurrently running franchises), so even if they wanted to make a new Darkstalkers and thought it could be a viable product, they still wouldn't - because it would me MORE profitable to devote that dev time to something like MvC.
The days of the passion project for a big company like Capcom are gone, and that's what it would have taken to get a new Darkstalkers. Ono tried and failed, but he's gone, and now so too are the chances of a new game. Darkstalkers is dead.
The collection with Darkstalkers did not sell well. People voted NO with their wallets.
@@sjue316 he's not wrong though. Darkstalkers was all internal Capcom, it was cheap and easy for them to throw in a collection and put out - it didn't sell particularly well. MvC collection required significant licensing to get out, and will require significant sales to justify that release. But significant sales will also have Marvel and Capcom going, ""yeah, there's money here in the future"". Ultimately, as Max keeps pointing out, they're businesses, and they'll put money into what will make them money.
Capcom: we will no longer be using sales of random re-releases as some kind of "test" for franchises to justify future entries.

You can bet that this collection is not to get any number for themselves, and yes to deliver the sales number for Disney and get a lot of clauses in the proccess. Well, X-Men 97 just came out and will get season 2, so chances are they saw this as an opportune time to rerelease these classics, especially with how the X-Men CotA used X-Men 93 designs and reprised some of the VAs. Keep that nostalgia train going!

@sjue316 Street Fighter 30th sold 2.8 million and was all arcade versions of the games in question, in addition to being on most of the same platforms this compilation is on. This also had the advantage of debuting at a Nintendo Direct as opposed to a fighting game centered event like EVO or Capcom Cup, which means they immediately caught the widest net of casual fans while also attracting FGC audiences. This past Direct is already one of the most viewed in the entire history of those presentations. They have eyes on it, and MvC2 alone will probably be a major hook for both casual gamers and casual/hardcore Marvel fans, especially timing this right after X-Men 97

I'm not expecting anything at the moment. I think with the Marvel brand taking some big blows in the 2020s (lots of box office bombs, merch not selling, bad movies and shows), and Capcom on a hot streak probably opened the door for the collection to happen at all. I'm sure MvC4 talks are happening, but it relies heavily on sales of the collection. In the words of Scott Summers, Dreams don't die!

Sadly, can't confirm anything new, and according to him, they began planning on trying something new, but the soured relationship made their plans different. He did mention they were gonna do SF6 first, definitely, and he said that back when Season 4 was finishing up.
Do note, he wasn't above being incorrect, and it's likely they made plans more than anything.
STILL, I would say there's a good chance now they are working on it. Maybe it's not 80% done, or even 50%. But something tells me there's more.

It being just a test kind of feels too reactionairy and unnesecary on second thought. Finding out MvC is popular only to still have to pivot into developing a title sounds like bad business practice. And finding out if theres an audience for MvC can be done in all kinds of more easy and effective ways like market research etc. People also thought Super Mario RPG was a test for Mario RPG games and they had to vote with their wallet. Not a half a year later Mario and Luigi Brotherhood is announced. Obviously having been in the works way longer.
@@mikev8746 Yeah, there's a good chance the development had started, and they just used the collection to drum up interest. The work is far from done, but they probably had enough evidence earlier to light up the development (and considering how the head of SF6 went ahead with SNK, it's probably been a thing since early as Season 5 of SFV).

I remember how SF4 back in the day took off and that kind of paved the way for what MvC3 would become. Not directly ofcourse, but still. They did. They don't even have the sales numbers released for that collection. Makes me wonder how well it really did.
Darkstalkers situation is quite different from MvC. For better or worse.
They don't have to go through any licensing hurdle to make a DS collection, they fully own it. And it have had several re-release before.
And DS don't have the mainstream notoriety of Marvel characters, so the business side of Capcom is likely to refuse if someone in the company try to make a new game (like have happened in the past).
Darkstalkers is literally free for them to just vomit out the same 3 games (of which you'll actually play 1) every 5 years.

Yeah. It reminds me of the recent interviews about getting Mai and Terry into Street Fighter 6. Nakayama-San kept saying it started with the Capcom/SNK poster collab at EVO in 2022, and the discussions that followed from there eventually led to them doing the upcoming crossover. I think something similar could happen with Capcom and Marvel since that door had to be open to get this collection approved.

Apparently they DID consider Howard briefly for the first Marvel vs Capcom... but they already had Norimaru (a Japanese comedian's character, like Borat) in the Japanese version because they had somehow gotten contractually obligated to include him in a fighting game and would rather pawn him off on MvC1 than have to put him in Street Fighter 3, so they went "nah we already have a joke character".

We need to keep the hype low for now, because while the biggest obstacle no longer exists (Marvel and Capcom working together again), the collection needs to sell VERY well, not just “well” like the previous one, but VERY WELL. Also, a possible Marvel 4 needs to be a really good game that needs to please EVERYONE: like, have a really good cast (things like Phoenix Wright back, all the important X-Men, Megaman Classic and X back, all the Previous Darkstalkers back + Jon Talbain, Amiingo, Son Son and Ruby Heart, crazy stuff like that), good graphics and good gameplay.
So we're not out of the woods yet!

I hate the people saying “just play fightcade” you guys really overestimate the people that actually use it even among the FGC which always values convenience over everything. If we want any future for the VS series even if it isn’t with Marvel we need to buy this and the numbers will show that interest is there. I believe this nostalgia compilation is happening due to the damage that the Marvel brand has been hit with over the past four years, from the creative to Boseman’s blindsiding death to the blindsiding legal troubles of Majors.
Depending on film rights, I believe there will be an X-Men vs. Street Fighter film or streaming series in the coming years. Disney is going to make a fuck-ton off of this compilation as well as Hugh Jackman’s return, and this crossover being turned into a film or series could be seen as a rabbit to pull out of the hat.
Of particular note is that since 2002, Sony has been the exclusive distributor of all Spider-Man and Resident Evil films. So that’s a studio that’s already in bed with both Disney and Capcom.

Even though we’re thirty years removed from Marvel’s crash, the powers that be have essentially given us the same situation, where the value of Marvel has dropped down due to mismanagement of the IP, and Capcom has had multiple big hits.
Wonder if that’s going to lead to another Marvel renaissance in 15 years.

Marvel vs Capcom existed in it's entirety because Marvel in the 90's was in decline and they were desperate for merchandising.
They are in a similar position now so it's possible they could make an MVC5.
This is a _massive_ exaggeration. In no way, shape or form is Marvel now anywhere close to the state it was in the 90s. THey weren't "in decline", they _filed for bankruptcy_ .
Marvel/Disney can easily course correct with Disney Plus (fewer shows) and their movies. They are still in good shape overall. They are not "desperate" for anything (right now, anyway; things _could_ get worse, but that's not the situation they're in right now).

The source who leaked accurate character descriptions of the SF6 roster a year before the images leaked, also said MVC4 was in the works but they were "Taking Their Time" with it, so its possible MVC4 has been in the works for a while now
As long as there's no story mode like in MvCI, (which I love it btw, regardless of what the majority says) and focus more on the multi-player like other fighting games and release new characters as DLC over time, I don't see why not.
Definitely look forward to such a sequel in the coming future, but in the meantime, I wanna get the collection and try out the games I never got the chance to play!

Personally I'd rather see a reboot of the series. Gives people a way to temper expectations and gives the game more room to breath. Not to mention it gives them the excuse to bring back characters like captain commando, hayato, The x men and so on.
Why does there need to reboot to bring back old characters? It's not as though MvC series follows a story path. Much like Final Fantasy series, I'm pretty sure the various Vs. games (except _maybe_ for X-men vs. SF and MSH vs. SF, where MSF basically replaced XSF) are their own stories and have no connection to each other.
Of course I could be wrong. But regardless, there's nothing stopping Capcom (not counting interference from Disney, which shouldn't be the case any more) from bringing back any old characters. The issue is to balance old ones with new ones when you only have so many slots.
MVCI was a soft reboot and everyone hated it. I loved it and thought the gameplay was great, but it needed more modes and stuff. It didn't bother me that X-Men, F4, and others didn't return.
I guarantee if a new one comes out the FGC will hate that one too. They always do.

If it doesn't have Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, and Cap, normies likely will pass. X-Men 97 doing well isn't hard. It's an incredibly low bar. D+ is terrible and everything on it isn't really worth watching. MVCI sold really well because of normies. I don't dislike either idea, but I'm not going to fool myself either. Especially when one show did moderately better than everything else on a streaming service.

If we do get another MvC, Miles, Kamala, & Nero are absolute must-haves for the roster. Hell, we almost got the first two at one point or another (UMvC3 for Miles, MvCI Season 2 for Kamala).
As for MvC4’s odds, I think it’s more likely than people expect. Just don’t expect there to be a ton of X-Men, especially thanks to Sony‘s exclusivity contract for the X-Men. I’m pretty sure there’s a certain percentage of X-Men characters that other devs of Marvel games can’t go over until 2035, I think it was around 25-30%.

True infinite is technically MVC4 but considering that game and how it was recieved they may ignore Infinite and probably say it was a test or spin off due to it releasing at a dark time in Capcom and the next one is the official MVC4
Imagine they announce this to ease us into an announcement of a new MVC at EVO this year. The FGC might collectively start cooming everywhere.
For MVC4, Capcom will need to do a "Everyone is here" to get people excited. That means everyone from the series get to be in the starting roster; including new faces. Then you can start on DLC.
Would be difficult, but it'd nice. Albeit, I would like half of the roster to be new faces and half to be veterans.
