I still can't believe he passed away. I heard it from a composer friend of mine, and I didn't believe it until I saw it myself. His piece, The Great Locomotive Chase, was the first I have ever conducted on RUclips. His legacy will be here forever, and his teachings will forever impact us all as musicians.

We played this in our band last semester. At around 2:10 there's supposed to be a gong hit. Our dear auxiliary percussionist, Sera, hit it wayyyyy too loud and scared everyone in the band, including the director. Me and the other percussionists just yelled "SERA!" in response. Best moment of that semester.

I remember playing this piece with my band teacher a few years ago. He was literally everyone's favourite teacher and he shared happy and joyful moments with us throughout the year. Sadly, he moved away to a different school, and Into the Storm was the very last piece he conducted for us on the very last concert with him at our school. We emotionally spoke our goodbye speech to him and thanked him for the memories he made for us before we tearfully performed this piece. Everyone sincerely misses him after that night and every time I come here to revisit this piece, I think of him.

    • @issaach
      @issaach 3 года назад +2

That is LITERALLY my story except not the pre-performance speech. Also, that performance (graduation) was the first one I got to perform in orchestra for (instead of his beginning band). I was likely drafted because I was the ONLY brass instrument in the school, but I did work hard on my horn to get in. Trumpet BTW.

0:03-0:22 The calm atmosphere before the storm comes
0:22-0:36 The leading edge of the storm arrives
0:36-1:14 Torrential rain, thunder, and strong winds
    1:14-1:26 Epic lightning flashes
1:26-1:38 Rain and winds become more furious
1:38-1:51 Rain stops but the lightning is still just as aggressive
1:51-2:32 Winds, lightning, and thunder slowly start to subside
2:32-4:40 The indescribably creepy and haunting deceptive calmness that occurs as the tornado nears
4:40-4:58 Calmness ends. Winds and lightning start to pick up again
4:58-5:11 The leading edge of the circulation hits. Rain and winds pummel the area with ferocity.
5:11-5:20 Lightning illuminates the approaching tornado
5:20-5:27 The freight train like roar of the tornado grows louder and louder
5:27-5:34 The tornado is now seconds away from hitting
    5:34-5:40 The tornado hits
    5:40-5:47 Complete destruction

It’s my favorite song by Robert W. Smith by far, it’s such a precious song to me in so many complicated ways. I was first flute in middle school when I played this song, I absolutely loved how fast and soothingly repetitive the flute part is.

This song represents a hurricane. Reason being is the first part is intense which represents the first side of the hurricane. Then when the piece gets calm, it represents the eye of the hurricane where it is all calm and peaceful. Then it gets intense again representing the other side of the hurricane when it starts being chaotic again. Absolute masterpiece!

Listening to this song makes me want to cry. It was 6th grade when I played this, a sort of iffy euphonium player who wasnt confidence in his skills. Now I am going into an arts highschool and all my time in middle school band is fading away. The middle of the song almodt made me shed tears. Remember my friends I will leave behind and the band constructor.
