- This week we will take a walk around our gardens to see the effects of the first hard frost as the temperatures dipped below 32 degrees. While many annuals, tender bulbs and perennial plants are still blooming, some didn’t weather leaf wilting as much as other plants. We will also return a week later to see the same areas after a series of hard frosts. We’ll take a closer look at our Dahilas, Zinnias, Nasturtiums, Canna Lilies, Mexican Sunflowers, Giant Fleece Plant, Phlox, Mammoth Mums and Montauk Daisies.

We went straight to the first freeze in kansas city mo. 26 and 23 2 consecutive nights. Tomorrow will be 80s .
Dahlias are definetly done. Tuber digging time for us.

I’ve been watching you for a couple of years now and was not successful in finding any Montauk Daisy plants near me in the San Antonio area, zone 8B. I was so excited to find some on sale at my local Lowes store. I picked up two quart size pots and have them in the ground. It’s been a couple of weeks now and they still have their blooms. So happy to have found them. Looking forward to watching them grow and bloom next fall!
Hello Angie. Congratulations of finding some Montauk Daisies in San Antonio. Hopefully they will do you proud to include them in your garden. Highly suggest adding support cages around each plant. The second year, you can start cutting in spring and begin propagating them everywhere. We'll be cutting all of our back to about 6" above ground level and getting 2 or 3 cutting from each stem. Just remember which side of the cutting is the bottom for planting. You've seen how we did it. It really is very simple. Keep us posted. Thank you again for taking the time to watch, care and share. Hi guys have not checked in for awhile hope you guys are doing well. Here in Pensacola FL we usually don’t have a first frost until December but this past Tuesday it got down to 39 which was a record then 41 last 2 nights so our tropicals took a little bit of a hit.
Hello Wesley. Welcome back. Can't begin to imagine all the restoration work in progress down in Florida. Hope all is well with you, your family and friends. As we drive around town, we must be more aware of so many license plates from Florida in front of us everywhere we go. Hopefully, all on business or pleasure.
We've now have had 4 hard frosts and yet the temps today are in the 70's and will be for several days before returning to normal (50's and late in the month 40's). Hope all your plants survive the new normal climate changes. Stay warm.

Here in Kansas City it dropped to around 19 degrees two nights in a row a couple days ago, today we get up to 86, weather is very confusing.

We haven't had our first frost yet. I say the frost makes "Halloween" plants.
We've had several Jackie and are now starting to dig up and winterize all of our selected tender bulbs. Hope all is well in your neighborhood. Happy Halloween. TKS Lynn & Richard
Mums that aren't perennial are marked "floral"; I recall that you had bought some that were marked perennial but they died, and that's happened to me as well, but that's "just one of those things" as the song goes- sometimes things inconveniently die when they're not supposed to, particularly if planted in fall. I suppose the "floral" designation comes from the fact that florists use the non-perennial plants, which, as you're undoubtedly aware, can have much larger flowers, although they don't necessarily. I wasn't aware of this designation until I bought a mum plant at Target which had "floral" on the tag, thought it probably meant "non-hardy" and sure enough, that's what it means. So I'll keep it under lights in my basement and it'll probably bloom again this winter or next spring- I've done that before but it's been some decades, literally.
Yes, Hardy Mums must be on the label and from a reliable source. Even some of the nurseries we visited have them mis-marked. Hard to find knowledgeable staff who know their plant sources and labeling. Hopefully your TLC will do the trick and keep your floral Mum thriving over winter indoors. You must try to find and add some hardy Mammoth Mums in your garden. One that you saw in this video is an example of their 1st year of growth. We anticipate they will get even larger next year. @@WisconsinGarden I might try to find hardy mums and plant them in spring. The longest I have ever had them is two seasons and they died. I am in zone 4 WI. I consider them an investment, I hope that your Mums will make the winter! Then you can tell us your secret!!!
Hi Lynn! Unfortunately we are being forced out of our home. I'm in the process of moving right now. What would be your suggestion for preserving perennials (digging some up and bringing them with) at this time of year? I've got one shot to take what I want so I'm in a tizzy lol. I spent A LOT of money on plants here and am devastated to think of leaving my beautiful creations behind. *The plan is to transport them to our new place, so im up in the air on putting them in the ground at this point or leaving them in containers. Not sure if my bushes would even make it 😩 You think they would come back in the Spring? Any suggestions from the community on her would be greatly appreciated!!
So sorry to hear this. As for perennials, this is still time to dig them up and take them with you. Ideally, replanting them soon before the ground freezes, but if worse comes to worse, keeping them in containers, keeping them watered for a while and perhaps keeping them in a garage, basement or dark cool space may help sustain them until next spring. Never a guarantee. As for larger bushes, that may be even more difficult to store over winter unless you have some extra space to keep the in containers simply buried in the ground may help save them survive winter until spring and/or resettling. Oh what I wouldn't give to have those Montauk daisies! The only thing I have blooming are tall pink asters, the bumble bees are still using them. I have visited your garden video blog, but I don't know how to use it! I am unclear what I am suppose to do when it asks for a password. Do I make up a new one for this account or do I use my You Tube account password? I sure would love it if you could do a video on how to use it. Maybe when its 20 below you can make one. I love learning from the two of you. As for now I'm a dedicated subscription user on You Tube and have been following you for almost a decade.
Hell Cindy. You are always welcome to take a daytrip and take home a bunch of Montauk Daisy cuttings for propagation. And yes, all the pollinators are enjoying them thoroughly.

With a little practice you'll realize how easy opening a chosen garden video can be whenever you want to watch something of specific interest. Thanks for the suggestion, Pamela. We used to use photos from said video. But when we switched to branding our channel, viewership took off 10-fold overnight. I guess due to consistency. We too thought a photo would attract more viewers but that proved not the case. Seeing that Wisconsin's color is red and gardening is green and very readable, when that change was made, viewership expanded very quickly over 1,058 vides into the millions. Go figure!
