- After several hard frosts the time has arrived for saving tender bulbs, tubers and rhizomes. While we have annual and perennial plant material that need to be removed from our gardens, we must begin focusing on saving those tender plants if we want to save them for next year. Now that the end of October is here, we will be digging up all of our Dahlias, Canna Lilies, Peruvian Daffodils, Elephant Ears and Fragrant Gladiolus. Our next video will show you how we wash, dry, winterize and store all of these tender bulbs, tubers and rhizomes.

Hi Suzanne. It took us 4 days but happy this phase is finished before the snow flies. Next video Sunday with focus on winterizing tender bulbs. Hi Angie, yes, it seems we have more each year. Often times the Dahlias don't survive, but most of the others do, so it's fun to see them sprouting in their boxes around March. Gives you hope that spring is coming.

Beautiful bulbs/tubers/corms. I have 4 dahlias, a dozen or two gladiolas, a dozen or more amaryllis, tulips, and maybe 50 plus different variety bearded iris. I'm still building on my collection. It's warming up here and I've been busy getting my yard for growing this season. I'm slow but making a dent in my garden tasks. I can't wait to see stuff growing and eating fresh fruits and veggies soon. Right now we're snacking on our white mulberries...yum!
Hi Mary. Sounds wonderful as you prepare for spring as we await the eventual arrival of winter. We've had some incredibly warm weather in the high 60's and mid 70's. Many records broken as this is about 20 degrees above normal for us in early November. Rick was cutting the grass and leaves this morning in jeans and a T-shirt without a jacket. Amazing! Now storms are rolling through with lots of rain and thunder knowing our power for a split-second. We feel blessed to have these garden tasks done before the snow flies. That may be weeks away at this rate. Have fun enjoying the wonders of springtime and eventually all those home-grown goodies. I dug up my dahlia tubers this week.
Had one in a pot the other in a raised bed. Next year they will all be planted in pots. It is just easier to get at if you like to overwinter them.
Good morning Barbara. It's always fun to keep your favorite tender bulbs and see them multiply. I know some people prefer to buy new ones every year to replace the ones they didn't want to save. One of the reasons we started keeping our tender bulbs in containers was to remember where they were planted before they disappear like the Caladiums. I had to use stick markers to find them. Lynn that's lot of work, I know I.have been digging my bulbs also. Oh my how those canna bulbs so multiply.
Hi Sharon. OMG, so many canna lily bulbs this year and we've given away several to family, friends and neighbors and still have a basement full of goodies. It was only a couple of years ago we brought back a couple from a MG plant sale. I don't think I will plant more than one in a container again. Even here in Austin I am going to pull my Caladium bulbs because they are so beautiful and I can't find where I bought them or the variety and they were so tough to have survived our most brutal summer in memory. Shall I wait for the first freeze to dig? That is usually around the first of December. I will search your former videos as to how to store them but any quick update would be appreciated. No GPG this time. Bad year...why on earth did they let Devante Adams go?? Love you guys!
Hi Maureen. If the frost wilts your Caladium, it's time to dig them up. Depending upon the length of cold weather you can save them until the soil returns to a constant 50's without cold weather in the forecast. I would think Austin has much milder winter weather being in zone 8 compared to our zone 5B. As for the GBP's and releasing Davante Adams, I think management thought they had potential replacements for less money. It's sad to see amateur-level football be played under the guise by a so-called professional team. Fans are really frustrated by their play calling and performance. Who knows what's really going on inside the locker room. Not a happy bunch playing up to their potential.
