  • Now that May has arrived we need to begin assessing our spring garden to see how all of our plants weathered winter. After dramatically trimming back our Forsythia bushes, they are looking full and healthy along with hundreds of daffodil blossoms put on a magnificent spring exhibit for all of our neighbors. The tulips are popping and even a few dandelions are going to be allowed to attract pollinators but removed before they go to seed. Virginia Bluebells, Tree Peonies and Giant Bleeding Hearts will be in full bloom within a week or two. Many trees are budding and bushes turning green after surviving the sun, wind, rain and snow. Five of our large goldfish survived in the upper section of the waterfall along with a cute resident Bullfrog and most recently, George and Martha Mallard ducks took up residence in our small backyard pond. All in all, the garden is looking very healthy and we are pleased to assess and examine all the wonderful plants, trees and bushes that grace our gardens.

    Hello friends, good to see you both. Rain finally stopped here today. Unusualy cold. Hope all plants come up. Peonies are tall and have a lot of buds. Will start some work tomorrow. Has a lot of cleaning, mulching, and planting. Have two colors of Helibors. Green and Burgundy flowers. Enjoy gardening. Sorry I took all my dandelion out. I hate them. Our bird feeders are out. The second set will be fixed tomorrow. Lot of birds in our yard. Have a wonderful season. Song birds sing for me when I request them. Talk to you soon. Bye.

      @@WisconsinGarden I was happy to see the new grapes I had to move survived as the winery lost 90-95% of buds. It’s been a lazy rainy day and hope we don’t get frost north of you tonight. Fingers crossed. I shoved as much as I could in the lil greenhouse, but I didn’t cover plants in ground already. My husband always has to say, should have waited until Memorial Day. Sigh, hope he’s wrong. We’ve had 90s already and above 70 for the most part-Who knew?

    We have a couple Alberta Spruces. They dont like the sand or winter here in WI. What I did last year was a game changer for them as I wrapped one layer of burlap around them and made sure they were watered well before freezing as usual. This year we uncovered them and the boxwood and they are beautiful. No dried up burnt limbs.
    Wow, I didn’t know the water feature was that deep. It’s beautiful and they are a bit of work in cold country. Surprised the fish lived. One concern is I hope you don’t have any curious tots in the area. For me I would have to secure the area.
    I had the worst seed starting venture this year and I will be baking my soil on the grill before it enters the house from now on. I used an open bag of soil and had the worst time with gnats and aphids. Never again. I’ve never had either before and don’t have aphids outside either. I wasn’t sure if the peppers could take much more. I tried spraying soap water and Neem oil for aphids and all I got was wet. I found several real lady bugs that helped quite a bit, but they hitched a ride to the greenhouse. At the last week of them being indoors I found an OMRI approved oil at Menards and the problem was solved-no more aphids! Hallelujah!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. I surely didn’t want them in the greenhouse. The gnats I couldn’t solve. Sticky traps, peroxide drench, drying them out, Mosquito Bits-it was a losing battle. Once outside they must have flew off or something attacked them.
    Things look great! Keep up the good work.

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Год назад

      Watering well and wrapping burlap helps prevent sun and wind burn. Glad to hear the boxwoods also look great. Can't blame you when it come to bringing in plants over the winter or using potting soil that harbors gnats and aphids. I end up using a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol over and under each leaf once the invasion starts. I also add yellow sticky shapes to capture them as well. When the top of any soil turns white or sour, I scoop it off and add new layer of potting soil. As for tots, none are allowed without constant parent supervision. Disclaimer entrance signs on both driveway entrances.
      Today we are outside prepping the raised beds for planting this week. So far, everything is looking good for this year. Knock on wood and on Richard's head if he's standing nearby. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Keep The Love Growing - Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com

    Looking forward to another growing season with you. Please don’t send anymore of your off season weather across the lake because I am so far behind this year due to the weather. Michigan seems a bit confused as to where we are in the calendar year but I guess we take the days as they come. Just teasing you as I know you are struggling in Wisconsin too. I have been looking for Montucks for 2 years but no luck. Seems everyone has been in a fever pitch to get their hands on them but maybe this will be my year. Happy gardening!!!:):):)

      Unfortunately, we have NO control over the weather or which way the wind blows. We get ours from Minnesota & Canada, so we have them to thank as well. Also teasing. So much for global warming. We too are very surprise to hear how difficult Montauk Dasies are to find around the country. We wish everyone lived nearby and propagate their own. Just keep asking and checking with your local garden center or nursery. Have a great prolific garden. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Keep The Love Growing. This weather has been weird for sure as I’m just north of them and we had rain in January and March weather in April. Going from 90s to 6” of snow is bad. Vineyard lost 90-95% of grape buds.

    Hello Lynn, just found your videos and enjoying them very much. I live in a small apartment, have a small indoor garden of houseplants, and I'm finally trying to get into growing a few fruits and vegetables and want to use more natural fertilizers like Epsom salts, coffee grounds, egg shells etc. I loved your dry milk tip in one of your other videos. I've been able to grow small lemon trees for about 3 years but they never got past about two feet. The same with Avocado plants.
    Late this Spring, I tried my hand at germinating tomato and kiwi seeds, and an avocado seed on paper towels. So far the tomato, kiwi and Avocado seeds germinated, so I transferred them to soil. Today I sowed strawberry seeds and hoping they sprout because I love strawberries.
    I have question.... two months ago, I was able to root several store bought kale leaves and planted them in soil. I fed them Dr. Earth's liquid fertilizer along with Epsom salts and egg shells. Two weeks ago, they started flowering or what I learned as "bolting." Does this mean that the kale leaves aren't any good now? Should I cut the flower stems? Sorry for the long message.

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Год назад +1

      Welcome Aida, sounds like you are a creative gardener and enjoy experimenting like we do. I can't help myself when it comes to avocados and have 6 rooting on my kitchen sink now.
      Never tried kale leaves, but sounds interesting. If the leaves are not leathery or discolored, give them a try to see how they taste. I think I would cut the flower stems off. Let us know. Love hearing results.
