      @@SheffieldMadePlants Well I live in Nova Scotia and my house is filled with hanging plants as I have five cats and I’ve made lots of high places for most plants to survive where the cats can’t get them. Macramé is one of my favourite hobbies and I make some pretty cool things. I have one room where the hot air blows in through the wall all day long to keep my house warm so I guess my question is, are there any plants that survive a very warm dry climate that you would recommend growing in there that hang or grow well Other than maybe a cactus? 😁 You don’t have heat pumps where you live?

    I have an indoor plant fertilizer tip. If you use a liquid fertilizer take a piece of duct tape about the size of your hand and put it on the side or the bottom of the bottle. You can then write on it with a sharpie or really good pain and you can put the date that you fertilized your plant. The duct tape is strong and isn't going to come off if the bottle gets wet or if you need to rinse it or leave it outside. And usually the sharpie or the pen won't come off unless you've introduced rubbing alcohol or acetone to it.

    For FUNGUS GNATS I swear by neem meal (sometimes called neem cake). You put the powder/pellets in warm water for several hours to make a “tea.” Then you water with it. Repeat for the next 3-4 waterings. It works!! I have tried EVERYTHING. This is the only thing that did it. Smells a little funny but worth it. You can also mix the dry meal into the potting mix when repotting plants.

I made a little moderation and I'm using rainwater instead of tap water. I've been watering my Dragon with it and so far, it's doing well. I cut off the dying or crusty leaves, just leaving the healthiest leaf. It only has the one leaf, but it's still going good. I have found that 1/4 inch of sterilized sand over the top of your plant soil will take care of the bugs. The young are too weak to make it through the sand. However, some do come through the holes at the bottom of the pot so the yellow sticky paper is a great tool.

    OMG 😮 I just got my moisture meter and I have no idea how my little friends have survived this long without it 😳 being autistic my brain is wired differently so my senses are not experienced in the common (I’m trying to stop saying normal) way but I naively thought I could improve my sense of touch by using the finger method and oh, how wrong I was, which is obvious when I think about it 🤦🏻‍♀️ I thought my first plant that I tested was ok for moisture but it turns out, it was bone dry 😭 and not only is this great for testing moisture but already it’s taken all the stress out of watering which is good for me and I can hear my plants cheering 🙌🏽 and saying it’s good for them as well 😍
    … I think this is my best plant purchase buy ever 👍🏽 it’s definitely taken my plant life to another level ✔️ I highly recommend and can’t wait until the next watering day and I haven’t finished this one yet 🤪 that’s the adhd brain, always ahead of the game, or so it thinks 😆
    Plant moisture metre for the win 🥇

    I've got a small ponytail plant that's been struggling. Leaves are turning brown and dropping. It's been in the same pot it was in when I bought it a few years ago. They had put a layer of gravel siliconed over the whole soil surface, so I haven't been able to get a finger or the moisture meter into it to check moisture level. I finally decided this morning to pull it out and check the roots, per your recommendation for various plant issues. Since I haven't been able to check the moisture level in it, I give it very little water and only when I need to water my much larger ponytail (maybe once a month). Apparently even that was too much. When I removed the 1/2" thick layer of siliconed gravel, the soil was DRENCHED. Ack! No wonder the poor thing wasn't happy. The roots were small and skimpy, so it's not rootbound by any stretch. So I blended the existing soil with some new substrate (including water absorbing elements) and repotted it back into the same pot. Hopefully it'll bounce back. At least now I can actually check the moisture level!

The best thing I ever did was to thickly top dress the plants with vermiculite. I still top water but I do so right at the root crown so the rest of the surface stays dry. Yellow sticky traps are also great for catching those lingering adult flies.

    I keep gnats down by growing Sundews as a natural fly catcher. A well watered (rainwater, no tap water!) happy Sundew will produce masses of sweet sticky mucus that will catch loads of these little buggers and digest them. They work 100x better than the little yellow cards, and you only have to buy them once, plus you also get another plant instead of just a bit of card.
    Plants like the Cape Sundew (Drosera Capensis), are the ultimate fly catcher, and they grow all year round and are easy to care for. Put them in a pot in a very shallow water tray in bright sunlight and let them do their thing. You'll be happy to see gnats because they'll feed your Sundews.
    Loving your vids by the way, very good production, and straight to the point. Thanks for previous replies to comments too. And your plants look outrageously healthy!

    I used a combination of Nematodes and a Neem Oil product to completely get rid of the fungus gnat population in my plants last year 👍🏻

      @@SheffieldMadePlants oh and yes, the yellow stickers of course, to be in control what's going on and to catch all those creepy creatures already flying around because the Oil and Nematodes only kill the larvae in the substrate. Active adult gnats will lay new eggs. So fight them on all layers :D Btw thanks for you videos, very helpful and entertaining 🙌🏻

    Have you ever tried BTI tabs (i.e. 'mosquito bits') against fungus gnats? Every youtuber, who has ever tried them claims, that they get rid of the entire population when used regularly in the water. I havn't come around to try it myself, but am planing to do so this year.

    Any advice for mealy bugs? How far away should i keep the affected plant from my other plants? Also, why does my perlite on the top of my soil turn an orange/brown color? I’m going to start bottom watering all plants so maybe that will some that issue.

      Mealybugs dab with rubbing alcohol and then wash/wipe off. The colour is probably a reaction to the light

    Hello! When you bottom water your plants, do you get condensation forming underneath the planter? I’ve tried bottom watering and some planters, especially terra cotta, seem to get damp underneath, damaging the counter or surface it’s sitting on. I’d like to try more bottom watering but I might need to take stock of the material that my decorative planters are made from. Any advice?

    • @SheffieldMadePlants
      @SheffieldMadePlants  Год назад +2

      Yes that is a problem with terra cotta and it damaged my windowsills too. I’ve got mats underneath now

    Thank you very much.
    Question please regarding cinnamon- I recently reported my philodendron verucossum to new soil as thought it had had fungus in the soil in the pot. I sprinkled cinnamon on the top f the soil and in a couple of days the cinnamon started to rot and create fungus looking webbing on it. Is it possible that the fungus somehow kept on the roots and is now in the new soil? Or does it normally mould? Thank you

    • @SheffieldMadePlants
      @SheffieldMadePlants  Год назад +1

      Hmm something is very wrong with your plant. Cinnamon is an anti fungal so it should eat the fungus. You say webbing - are you sure it's a fungus and not a bug (spider mites)?
