  • www.WisconsinGa... - - - It’s time to consider some topiary trimming especially on several arborvitae bushes that exist in different parts of our garden. Both overcrowding and the winter sun has burned and destroyed much of the southern side of these plants over the years. Rather than digging them up and throwing them away, we decided to apply our artistic topiary minds to this task. We even decided to topiary six of our full dwarf Alberta spruce trees that we planted along the edge of our berm that if allowed to fully grow would end up blocking our view of many other plants growing on our berm. Now we could have removed and replanted them elsewhere, but from the view of our front porch overlooking this berm area has already revealed other flowering plants, bushes, and trees that will also reveal our topiary structures during the winter months. Now it’s up to us to keep them trimmed.

    You two are adorable! I have been searching the web for something exactly like this! I have 3 unsightly older dwarf spruces that I was originally going to pull out. Now I will try this and hope that this does the job! Thank you!!

      Hi Annie. Thank you for your very kind words of support. It really means a lot. As for topiaries, it's definitely worth a try in creating something very special. Think of it like recycling the visual life of a bush and creating a work of art. Like a sculptor, you remove a section at a time, walk around it, looking at it from different views. The great part is that, like a haircut, it will grow back. Be patient with yourself and you will probably give each spruce a name. Have fun and enjoy the calming process.

      I'm in MN and I have to trim back landscaping bushes in my yard. I thought they were kind of boring but now I can see that they can be really cool.

    It was a treat to see Rick on camera and fun watching both of your topiary projects. I'm considering topiary as a topic for one of the garden club's monthly meetings.

      This is always a great solution for wind and winter damage to Alberta Spruce. A fun topic. I also wanted everyone to know that Richard does far more work in our gardens than ever shown or known. He prefers to be like Tim Allen's neighbor 'Wilson' on Home Improvement TV series, partially seen behind the fence. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com

    I love Lynn's hair and i love the way you guys trim these trees. My husband and i just bought a couple of dwarf alberta spruce trees and i was worried about how to trim them. Your video has me feeling more confident. Your interaction with each other is adorable for viewers.

      Awe, that's so sweet. My husband cut and styled my hair many years ago after swimming and then having to go out to eat with his sister and mother. On the drive there, his mother said she hated me jokingly, because that's the hairdo she's always wanted. Every year our Alberta spruce experience wind and sun burn which was our original excuse to start trimming all of them into cute topiaries. Trimming them is like getting a haircut and while it may never be the same, it will always grow back. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard

    Hey there...okay first I have to say this video was absolutely hilarious but also very informative.
    I have the same tree and I really need some help with doing a triple ball topiary....but I haven't found a video that's been much help....my tree looks just like the 2 tiered one you have...as I literally dove inside of it while watching this video. Because I've had this tree for about a month now, I've just been staring at it not knowing how to even begin. But thankfully with the help of you both, I've learned a trunk load (no pun intended, haha) and am very grateful to have found you both.
    I would love to keep in touch with you both during my topiary adventures up here in Renton, WA and I can't wait to see what you both do next. Phenomenal job on the lesson, goofy-happy humor & for literally brightening my day today!

      Hi Krisha. I'm reading your comment to my husband here in our office. Now we are both blushing and appreciating your very kind comments. So much has happened since doing this video and unfortunately those bushes had to be removed last fall when our entire house was being sided so that workers had full access.
      The video you just watched is about 3-4 years old but the information remains the same. It really is about seeing where you want to create the dividing lines of your Topiary and going deep into the structure to remove branches below the top and middle sections. Even the bottom may need some trimming to create the look you are after.
      We welcome you to stay in touch with us and perhaps see how much things have changed. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard - See more of our latest garden videos (over 900) at www.WisconsinGarden.com

      Anna C I think so too. Just kidding, you should see all the work he does, not only behind the camera, editing and producing, but all the hard labor work as well. He build me a super durable 30" wide x 3' tall x 10' long planting table and storage area yesterday. That's after trimming all our bushes the last two days. Nice to have a working handyman around when you need one. He's a keeper. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard

      Hello Donna. Right now, before the snow flies is a great time to begin shaping you Alberta Sprice. Trim a little at a time and walk around to see the shapes you're after. We tried trimming ours early this spring, but the hot summer took its toll so we will wait until next fall to keep the topiary shaping we desire. Go for it. Thank you for watching, sharing and caring. Stay safe. Have a great week playing in your garden. Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com

    I've been waiting for a video that explains what is going on with Alberta spruces. I love these trees but mine end up with some dead branches. Can you tell me, when you cut out all those branches does the tree grow new branches or does new growth on grow from the tips?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  3 года назад

      Hello Nancy. We immediately address a broken or damaged branch when we find one. While trimming and pruning is normally done in late winter or early spring when new grow appears, we trim ours when we can find time. The earlier one can begin training and topiary trimming the better. We started after a harsh winter sun and wind burn and made the decision to start their topiary journey late after they had been slowly growing for several years. As for the newly opened areas, if the sun can enter, new growth is encouraged. We haven't trimmed ours in years and decided that 2021 was the year for reclaiming their topiary status. Hope this helps give you the confidence to go our and prune and trim on your schedule. If you haven't already check out some of our recent videos on our website www.WisconsinGarden.com. Thank you for watching. Stay safe, healthy and happy. Lynn & Richard #KeepTheLoveGrowing

      +Jackie Horsley Each year it seems that our Iris get bolder and brighter in many colors. But the purple iris smell just like grape Kool aid. You can smell them no matter where you are in the garden - so fragrant. Are you possibly thinking of Columbine? The sunflowers around our garden were planted by squirrels, not us. As for Morning Glory, I made the mistake of planting them in both drive ways. So sorry I did that as they have become extremely invasive despite pulling the out every chance I get. Urrrrrrrr! Will they grow in shade zone 8?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  2 года назад

      Shaded areas can always affect bushes and trees. Normally the dwarf Alberta spruce is best suited for a climate with cold winters and cool summers. The dwarf Alberta spruce tree grows in USDA hardiness zones 3 to 8, but it is temperamental in the warmer zones 6 through 8. A dwarf Alberta spruce grows best in full sun and well-drained acidic soil. So, you may want to double check with your favorite local nursery to see how well they do in your growing zone. Hope you are staying safe and healthy and enjoying a New Year as well Thanks again for watching, caring and checking up on us. Lynn & Richard www.WisconsinGarden.com
