This is pretty cool. I imagine we could create human-powered railcars that could travel upwards of 20 mph with minimal effort. It would be a super lightweight, long slender streamlined capsule that you lay down in. This would drastically reduce the drag force that prevents cyclists from going very fast. The capsule would be mounted onto a thin hollow aluminum tube chassis with steel wheels that would ride on railroad tracks and would achieve superior speed to a bicycle. Sidewalks could have specially designed rails built into them, and this could become the future of human transport.

I always visualized a magnetic levitation system that could be installed on top of any surface almost like an epoxy paint that would contain the magnetic powder and Google earth maps would provide self navigation routes.. pedals would power an inverter that would power a brushless motor that would alternate positive and negative for propulsion ...

Redneck Mfg. maybe it could be bismuth powder suspended in asphalt. Bismuth, as far as I know, is diamagnetic, meaning it repels magnets rather than being attracted to them. Slap some big magnets on a snowboard and wham! You got a hover board.
Not sure how expensive this would be though, bismuth probably isn’t that cheap, and it might need a really thick layer of this asphalt to generate a strong enough field to keep you up.

Great rail car and the wheels are well done. They sure are fun and do it before rails to trails comes in and convinces the local govt to pull the tracks up. For those building one, make it a bit lower to the track which is better for derailments, also a box for tools and spare parts is nice as will for extra chain (or belts) sprockets and bolts. Also some kind of braking system is a nice add. If you ride on brushy track a cross member out in front to knock down the weeds makes things more pleasant.

@@dickmorrison5158 Dick I apologize but this video was made almost ten years ago and that rail runner has since been recycled into a guard rail by now.... LOL I have no idea on measurements but I can tell you the wheels were made from 10" sch40 steel pipe cut approx 4" wide the frame was made from 2x2 box tubing... but as far as lengths I have no idea how long it was nor how wide it was I can say a standard railway is 4ft 81/2" inside of rail to inside of rail... Other then that its all up to the person building it... as Albert Einstein said ""Imagination is more important then Knowledge"" I will say we had a blast with this for about two years then they tore the rails out and made a walk and bike path... Better known as Rails to Trails.... Good Luck and keep me informed if you start to build one and/or post in on youtube ....

now to make a really cool video would be to hoock a long rope on a passing train and let it tow a trail bike but five times the speed is it too much to handle , speed wobble, could it be designed for it , maybe rubber in rope for easy start , risk of stepping into rope loop , helmet , armour , ejection seat, parachute , airbags for falling to side, paddings or air filled , even a safety cage or shell, but detachable from bike. how about a giant ball rolling o the tracks , pulled by train. ball of branches or plastic or rods pipes. and guy inside on a chair on side bearings . . or like could use an old car pulled behind train w normal wheels on side of trracks or no rubber and iron wheels on track , but rubber coating inside them. or rope and parachute fly benind train. any of those ideas can be very dangerous but some might be rather safe maybe if well designed and done. some choose some danger risk for fun, its popular on youtube like skydiving . or wings from airplane attatched to old car pulled on wire behind train till it flies. in sstrong headwind like a kite. ...b

+john haynes The way we hold it on the tracks is with box tubing on the inside on the track if you watch and pause the video at just the right time you can see that box tubing.... so we had ridden this thing many times and never had any problems at Siding switches ... Until this day !!! we were riding along at approx. 14 MPH (which feels like 41MPH) LOL and one of the joiner plates at the switch was sticking up higher on the inside of the track.. well the box tubing struck that joint plate and stopped us dead... Causing our motor hinge to twist which in return misaligned the sprocket... we pushed it back OOOOOh about 3 Miles to the truck..... And Dad sat in the seat for most of that ride... But, I told him dad you push and I will film you and make it look like you pushed it all the way Home... and that's what he tells everyone !!!! Yeah Rick made me push it all the way home !!!!

I think hard rubber tires may work better but would effect the smoothness of the ride! What happened to RR1? Might it be for sale. I live in Washington and you are in Delaware. I would like to send you my phone number to your home address that I found on the internet if that would be acceptable! Thanks for responding! Dick Morrison Chehalis, WA

@@dickmorrison5158 my dad said the wheels were too noisy so that's the only reason we redesigned them.. unfortunately I no long have either of the RR's the line that we ran has since been turned into rails to trails... the real retainers worked awesome and even cleaned stones out of the groove at crossings.... we did catch a connection plate and bent one of them causing the chain to pop off because the sprocket we misaligned

Looks good but Inotice there is no flange on the front wheels just a tab of steel on the frame to hold it onto the rails. Scetchy lolol

We cut the 2x2 box tubing down to 3/4" at the bottom and reinforced it with plate steel that extended it up into the 2x2 box tubing approx. 6 ".. so it is a little more then just a tab of steel...it worked very well... Just had to slow down for turn outs and road crossings... JUST IN CASE ! lol Thanks for watching snd be sure to Subscribe...

It should be a polyurethane roller running horizontal instead of a tab on each front wheel and a ramp or roller at the engine corner to raise it above track joiners

Would be better with flanged wheels.

True ! But a 4'x4' sheet of 1/4" steel plate was almost $200.00 that's what we needed to do a flange on these rims.. so we just used box tubing and reinforced the bottom where we cut it down to fit thru road crossing gaps... but yes flanges would be Better I agree.. Thanks for watching - are you looking to build one for the rails??? they are a blast..

they are currently awaiting - Rails to Trails - conversion..... Sad but true... The swing bridge no longer meets the state specs and the rail owner doesn't have enough freight to justify the fix... Thanks for watching & Thanks for the comment

How about one of many popular songs or light-classical instrumental pieces? There are many to chose from.
