In this video I build a solar tracking system for my off grid home. These trackers are relatively small compared to most, as I already have most of my solar PV on a ground rack and was limited in space on the patio. But I wanted to add a few more diy solar panels to the system and try out the diy solar tracking kits that I found on Ebay at the same time. They worked out great. The tracker structure is easy to build with treated lumber, though if you can afford it I recommend using a stainless steel pipe for the column, as this will last a lot longer embedded in the concrete. The tracking system itself (ir sensor and controller) was easy to install and set up. The actuators can be controlled manually or by the sensor, which is essentially just two tiny angled solar cells under a clear plastic dome that track the intensity of the sun.

*Imagine having James Biggar on Gilligan's Island!!! Whole show would be two episodes: #1 We're shipwrecked, #2 Fixed the boat, have the position sensor tracking the North Star, Daiquiri's in the fridge and wake me up when we hit Malibu.*
Do you think I could install a tracker on a standing seam zinc roof? The direction of the slope of the roof is tilted slightly away from optimum position for panels so thought I'd research mounting panels to a frame (was thinking fabricated metal frame) preferably with ability to track the sun.
Do the plans also mention the type/brand of tracking equipment used? I figured yes for all the building material but wanted to double check that part. Thank you and great work!
I am amazed at the amount of people who comment with “you did x wrong” or “you should have...”. Blah blah blah. I highly doubt they have built a similar project successfully. While feedback is important, they don’t seem to give any positive feedback. I personally found your vid to be extremely helpful. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. Thank you !!
This is by far the best DIY solar tracker build I've seen! The design is so well thought out, it's absolutely beautiful! Thank you very much for sharing this!
Neat, accurate and truly professional craftsmanship. From geography, to woodwork, to electronics - knowledgeable and well researched. I have a new hero. Respect.
Regards James, thank you for the video. I wanted to test PV slowly. Bought two modules with 300Wp, fixed, then tried to optimize.
Your building instructions helped me a lot and it works. I'm excited. The performance is of course better and consistent.
Sunny greetings from Germany!
Thanks for all the effort in making this video
Thanks for checking it out!
Outstanding! Detailed enough without beibg overwhelming. Thank you!
Thanks for your nice project. People like you make the world a better place. Greetings from Germany
This is a very nicely done video. We took a look at some of your others as well. Your approach with each project is well thought out. You seamlessly mix pretty sophisticated technology with traditional fabrication techniques that would have been understood by a craftsman 300 years ago. That is a rare talent. Subscribed.
Nice Job James, it is easy to be a critic, not so easy to be an actual maker. Thanks again.
SO SIMPLE BUT GREAT THANK FROM THE UK
The joy of building and completing a project of this size is amazing. Probably 100 or 1000 times more than watching an easy an well detailed video about it. Great!
Thanks!
Man, your a multi faceted genius!!! Your Biggar than Life. Thanks
Excellent travail, Bravo!👍👍👌
Excellent video. Thanks for the straight forward approach, no babbling. 👍😁
Very impressed. It's something I'm going to look into for thermal solar collection!
You, Sir, are a craftsman! You sure make me wish I was in a more open area, and didn't love the house I am in now so darn much!
Very good. The rebar idea is fantastic!
You do amazing work! High detail. A pleasure to watch! Thanks!
This guy is a real PRO.....Thanks for sharing.
This video put an abrupt end to my research for an outdoor wood boiler! I’m now addicted to your channel and solar. Thank you for your upload!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful video- thank you so much. It is just what I was looking for.
Dein Video macht mich sprachlos, ich bin begeistert und immer wieder fasziniert das es so gute Handwerker gibt. du bist der beste!!!!!!!! LG Bernd
Aber, um wieviel prozent verbessert es die Ausbeute ?
Wow! You have madd skills Bro! Love this build! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for this video, and the exceptionally well priced DIY Package! You can count me as a customer soon 🤠
Excellent video, I like how you went back through all the sped up clips and put sound effects over them
wonderful job
Your projects are awesome and super well done. Thanks for posting such in depth instructions on your website. Your plans are by far the best/most comprehensive I've found.
You're so fortunate to have all this equipment
Just used basic tools to put together this DIY system acquired through decades of hard work and sacrifice - fortune had nothing to do with it my friend lol.
I will do it because of my inspiration of your project. What a great project for our world. From Thailand.
Awesome job
OMG, what incredible work. Fantastic design and perfect execution
Just one thought about the video - Brilliant and Amazing
Beautiful
Thanks guy! Love the design of your solar panel mounts!
Beautiful work 👌👌 Thank You for showing it to us!
Great Video! Thanks for taking the time to record, edit, and upload!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment :) I hope the video was helpful!
I wish this was a series of videos and a walk through step by step but still an awesome video
Thanks! I used to do lengthy video series like that but after studying the analytics over the years I've found people don't like to put in the time because the vids tend to be kind of boring and geared more toward serious builders instead of general viewers looking for ideas, and they tend to lose interest in the larger projects like this after a couple of video uploads (I can't blame them sometimes, really). Short and sweet is popular for video content but not too short otherwise RUclips's algorithm gives the video a figurative middle finger. So to compromise I put in the extra time to make downloadable step by step build guides and 3D CAD's of each project for anyone with serious motivation who's looking for exact spec's and details on how to build, which are available on the website. Cheers!

Nah, like I said, great content; short enough to get the idea. I am sure with the downloadable material, it will all make sense in the end. Will definitely get this on my next to do list! Aloha!
Cu panouri foto voltaice faci treaba dar..... inca sunt prea scumpe ......

A few issues lumber in concrete is a bad idea where I live and WD-40 is hydrophilic so overtime it attracts water. Maybe suggest marine grease instead.
Como en cuanto cuesta
THANKS! I was about to sit down and design a tracker.
Great Job James.
James, great engineering and craftsmanship. Very elegant and strong design. Thanks for sharing
You are very talented.
I love your videos!!! Even hearing deficient like me can benefit from your experience, projects and knowledge. Everything you need is on the screen
Anyway, when you make practical things, talking is futile especially when you work with power tools. But good explanation placed directly on work is a treasure.
THANK YOU !!!!
Great to see that Avasva has new instructions to save my money and energy to build it.
looks gorgeous
Great video and amazing skills. I really admire the way you depend on your self for almost everything in your projects, from sketchup designs, video editing, carpentry, wiring..etc. Such an inspiration.
I look forward to watching your next project. Keep it up!
Thanks for the comment! :)
Super Nice Workmanship.
You are just absolutely impressive, sir. I discovered your electric motorcycle video and have been binge-watching your content for an hour now. Definitely got yourself another subscriber!
Outstanding.
Dude you have major skills!! Excellent workmanship!
That's really good workmanship, good to see. Nice touch with the metal trim work. I'm jealous of the amount of tools you have.
Joy to watch
I love your channel, thank you very much for showing it!
Please don't stop doing it. 🤔😱🤯😍🔝
Lego the movie...The REAL master builder!
Wow, just wow. Nice work sir.
Nice work !!!
A very good practical tutorial without a lecture. Thanks a lot.
Well made video, your explanation as to why you chose to with wood really makes allot of sense. Those DIY PV Modules looks amazing, for a moment there I thought they were bifacial, then I recalled you building them in another video. Keep on sharing, it’s much appreciated.
Thanks for the comment! :)
Großartiger Handwerker - Respekt!
Voll einverstanden!
Nice job
Thank you for the high quality video. I really appreciate when someone takes the time to make sure it's done well. Great project too! The attention to detail is great
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Great Video
Great build . I like the single axis solar tracker controller.
Thanks! It's been working great so far, 0 complaints.
You have to change the angle lower for winters ie 65 deg vs summer angle
65 degrees in winter? where do you live? 22 degrees in winter for me :( (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
We get an occasional 22 here but rarely and only for an hour or so then sun comes up. I live in the tropics (East of Orlando FL almost to Atlantic Ocean ! ) I got the 95 / 95 / 95 Or (95 Cubed) "summer" system here 95 F / 95 Humidity / next to I-95 , we got more rain this year so far than I can remember except maybe during the hurricanes of 04/05 (Yeah Katrina sat her for 2 whole weeks solid rain everyday, streets flooded/closed but then it went to N.Orleans and you know the rest. ). Best Wishes !
Such a great job and production! Godspeed
Not gonna lie... I'm extremely jealous at the tools you have at your disposal to make this look so damn professional!
That was most helpful across the whole project. I've taken three of four things away from this to use in my future designs.. the thrust bearing is the thing I had not thought of at all... thanks heaps
No problem, thanks for watching!
Awesome tutorial video and thanks for sharing. You are a very talented man. I am hoping to see more of this and have a wonderful day.
Thanks, you too!!
very good .. it improves the energy gaining more with out more cost
Superb!
You my friend are a skilled craftsman. Great video
I'm electronic technologist I enjoyed it as the whole installation is fantastic, one thing is left in this system that is solar panels automatic cleaning system ,it can be smart system as and when required based on differentiation or simple system time based daily weakly or monthly cleaning for specific time 😉
Great exhibition and empowering everyone. I also see your food forest behind you!
Really good video... thanks for speeding it all up when needed
One could even say it's... UNREAL
Sure Lock haha I saw what you did there 👍🏻
Thanks.
You are full of cleverness.
Electrician, Carpenter, Engineer, Gardener, Photographer, Editor, what's else, Sorry if I forgot, Every Skills. You deserve likes from 💓.

Best DIY Solar tracker build ive seen so far!...Well done mate!!
Amazing work
Very cool
fricken amazing that some ppl can build anything
0_0 This is very impressive and I will say, coming from a background in sheet metal installing, you impressed me with some of that trim work and the use of drip edge flashing to put the sensor on! That made my day.
Great craftmanship!
Nice work! Wish I had your skills. Enjoyed your build.
Thanks!
