    In this video I build a solar tracking system for my off grid home. These trackers are relatively small compared to most, as I already have most of my solar PV on a ground rack and was limited in space on the patio. But I wanted to add a few more diy solar panels to the system and try out the diy solar tracking kits that I found on Ebay at the same time. They worked out great. The tracker structure is easy to build with treated lumber, though if you can afford it I recommend using a stainless steel pipe for the column, as this will last a lot longer embedded in the concrete. The tracking system itself (ir sensor and controller) was easy to install and set up. The actuators can be controlled manually or by the sensor, which is essentially just two tiny angled solar cells under a clear plastic dome that track the intensity of the sun.

      *Imagine having James Biggar on Gilligan's Island!!! Whole show would be two episodes: #1 We're shipwrecked, #2 Fixed the boat, have the position sensor tracking the North Star, Daiquiri's in the fridge and wake me up when we hit Malibu.*

      Do you think I could install a tracker on a standing seam zinc roof? The direction of the slope of the roof is tilted slightly away from optimum position for panels so thought I'd research mounting panels to a frame (was thinking fabricated metal frame) preferably with ability to track the sun.

      Do the plans also mention the type/brand of tracking equipment used? I figured yes for all the building material but wanted to double check that part. Thank you and great work!

    I am amazed at the amount of people who comment with “you did x wrong” or “you should have...”. Blah blah blah. I highly doubt they have built a similar project successfully. While feedback is important, they don’t seem to give any positive feedback. I personally found your vid to be extremely helpful. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. Thank you !!

    Regards James, thank you for the video. I wanted to test PV slowly. Bought two modules with 300Wp, fixed, then tried to optimize.

    This is a very nicely done video. We took a look at some of your others as well. Your approach with each project is well thought out. You seamlessly mix pretty sophisticated technology with traditional fabrication techniques that would have been understood by a craftsman 300 years ago. That is a rare talent. Subscribed.

      I wish this was a series of videos and a walk through step by step but still an awesome video

    • @JamesBiggar
      @JamesBiggar  6 лет назад +9

      Thanks! I used to do lengthy video series like that but after studying the analytics over the years I've found people don't like to put in the time because the vids tend to be kind of boring and geared more toward serious builders instead of general viewers looking for ideas, and they tend to lose interest in the larger projects like this after a couple of video uploads (I can't blame them sometimes, really). Short and sweet is popular for video content but not too short otherwise RUclips's algorithm gives the video a figurative middle finger. So to compromise I put in the extra time to make downloadable step by step build guides and 3D CAD's of each project for anyone with serious motivation who's looking for exact spec's and details on how to build, which are available on the website. Cheers!
