Carole King is the curly haired blonde woman who wrote the song.
She is a legendary songwriter.
And Aretha, well, she's THE QUEEN.
As was mentioned above... this was the Kennedy Center Honors for Carole King and most of the performances are posted here on RUclips. Her songs and story are presented nightly on Broadway in the musical 'Beautiful'.
One time Carole King was on David Letterman and her guitar player was Slash.
Grant May Carole King was a good singer as well, her record natural woman was one of the best selling albums of all time!
@@bellabana The album 'Tapestry' is currently listed at a sales total of 25 million and is certified "Diamond" (for over 10 million sold). Voted album of the year after it's release. Her songs written with Gerry Goffin dominated the charts in the 60's; SHE dominated with them in the 70's. There is another video here with the 'Beautiful' cast performing a song from the current hit Broadway musical
She didn't do this for the Obama's she did it to honor Carole King who wrote the song. The Obama's were there because it was the Kennedy Center Honors.
You got that right. The Obamas had nothing AT ALL to do with this amazing performance. NOTHING AT ALL.
Thank You Wendel Hardy !
Destry Welch That isn’t true. Because the Kennedy Center Honors are held in honor of President Kennedy, presidents have traditionally attended the ceremony as guests. Their presence adds to the prestige and importance of the event. Of course, Trump refused to attend.
I think this is The Kennedy Center Honors
@@deshaunx776 no, it was in honor of the writer Carol King, she is the one the camera keeps showing, she was the honoree that night.
That white woman reacting so strongly is the one who wrote the song - Carole King.
Ohhh thnks for that info
Carole King must be absolutely thrilled that she wrote this song! Beautiful message sang by the incomparable, sadly missed, Aretha Franklin as a tribute to Carole. 😍❤
The Obamas were there that night. But the performance was to honor the songwriter, Carole King, who was receiving the Kennedy Center Honors tribute that night.
Obamas gave out the medals
Elvis may have been the King of Rock N Roll, and Michael the King of Pop, but they all bowed down to the Queen of Soul.
Carol King wrote for everybody from Little Eva (who babysat for her) and the Monkees to Celine Dion and Mariah Carey to Baby Face and Mary J Blige. She played keyboard for BB King, sang with everybody for the last 50 years, put out what may be the best album ever by a female singer (Tapestry) and wrote well over a hundred top hits. Pretty good resume, huh?
Fighting cancer and she still sang the paint off the wall
Stephen Colbert was the host of the Kennedy Center Honors that year and, after Aretha Franklin died, he told the story of watching her perform. Colbert said that he was backstage with some of the other performers when she went onstage, and he made a remark to the effect that he wished he could have seen her at the top of her game. Then Colbert said, "I am a stupid, stupid man" and showed this knock-your-socks-off performance. LOL At least he admitted it; nobody should doubt the Queen of Soul.
Carole King was getting the Kennedy Center Honors award.Carole wrote" Natural Woman" for Aretha.
It was Carole King's moment but she has always been happy to share any success she had with the singers and musicians who made her songs popular. Aretha's glory is King's glory and she looked like she was having the time of her life here with Franklin at the top of her game.
This has to be my favorite performance of this song. The reason she still had her coat on is she only arrived to The Kennedy Center honors ten minutes before she walked on the stage to honor Carol King who wrote the song.
Aretha said it was cold backstage, as well.
@@sashineb.2114 you know she usually kept her room very hot ,as she said this helped her voice Sashine!!!
@@orawhorton8778 Yes, and I remember sweating at one of her concerts.
@@sashineb.2114 honey you probably couldn’t do nothing but sweat, when the Queen started blowing!!!
@@orawhorton8778 Oh, tell me about it. Yes, it was hot before she got on stage and even hotter when we were all wringing wet!
Greatness is not about rare talent. Even past her prime Aretha was still the Queen of Soul. Best performance. Period.
Two great performers. Aretha singing a song written by Carole King. What a great pair.
When you mix a legendary vocalist with a legendary songwriter, you get magic
@@kevlarmouse939 exactly Kevlar!!!
Wow!! Aretha was the best. God bless.
I honestly thought Carole King might have a heart attack. This is The Kennedy Center Honors. Carole King wrote/co-wrote some great songs.. look up her discography. "I Feel The Earth Move Under My Feet" great Carole King song!
When Aretha got down there was no reason for anyone else to try.
It is criminal that you haven't done a Carole King song. She wrote: Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, One Fine Day, Natural Woman, You've Got a Friend, It's Too Late, I Feel The Earth Move Under My Feet.... among others.
This woman never lost a beat chills
when this lady passed we as a world lost a queen of soul. and part of our hearts
Nobody could sing like her! Her signature fur coats............love when she took it off! PS The blonde flippin out is Carol King. Love her reaction. Aretha was not in good health but nothing would stop her performing for the Obama's. The late great beautiful Aretha Franklin, RIP.
Nobody holds a candle to Aretha
The woman in the crowd was Carol King Aretha was singing Carols song to her as it was her tribute concert..Aretha was amazing in it
Loved Carole's Tapestry album...one of the great albums of that era.
Aretha killed it, and she was 137 years old. My-T-Sharp
The white lady in the balcony was Carol King, who wrote that song and who was being celebrated for her life in music. At one time, her album called "Tapestry" was the best selling album on the charts. When Aretha Franklin sang natural woman, she took it to another level, as she always did whenever she sang someone else's music. I love both versions.
Aretha is always the woman!
She was 72 or 73 years of age doing this exquisite performance. Nobody does it like the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. Greatly missed 😥but most definitely not forgotten!!💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
I love this song. It is one of the most romantic songs I ever heard. It is so feminine. Love your impression of Obama. ❤️😊
Such a lady and so very classy 💗
Aretha will always be the queen! And Carole is the best songwriter ever!
THE WHOLE KENNEDY CENTER PERFORMANCES ARE GOLD WITH CREAM ON TOP, trufax
Carol King herself does a fine job singing this too, fwiw!
Aretha was a staple during my growing years....this makes me cry...she gave so much great music and soul to the years she was here.
That was not PBS. This The Kennedy Center Honors comes on CBS. This show comes on every year since the mid 70s. To honor people in the Art's. This year the show comes on the 26th. The Presidents used to come to the show, but people were turning down the award when Trump took the office. To keep the show going he doesn't attend the show.
Gave me chills of happiness
This is The Kennedy Center Honors on CBS not PBS. The Queen of Soul was singing "Natural Woman" in honor of her friend, the legendary singer/songwriter Carole King who wrote this song. Ms. King recorded and released Natural Woman, but it never became the hit that it is until Aretha recorded it, and rest is history.
Every time, water in my eyes....
That performance was totally one of the highlights of a lifetime!
She wasn't called the Queen of Soul for nothing. Voted the best female singer of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. There will never be another Aretha Franklin, tip top voice until the end. When you can make the person who wrote the song get that excited you know you are great. Otis Redding said she "stole" his song Respect. Check out her songs Chain of Fools and Think. By the way, great Obama impression.
Small correction, she was voted the best singer period male or female.
@@melaninenriched7844 period.👑
Rolling stone also titled respect as the greatest song of all time last week.👑🥳
@@Nonrelatable_t Speak on it. Similar to Lutha, if she covered your song understand you're not getting it back. She proved that time & time again.
This is the song that jump-started Aretha's career way back when. She's part of my growing up bc of her music...
Great voice, great performer.. when she passed.. the world lost a legend..
Hey pastor snacker is the man! Aretha is certainly the woman , the Queen of Soul forever💙zane
Aretha Franklin a national treasure.
The blonde that they keep showing in the audience wrote that song
She wrote the music. Her husband wrote the lyrics
Oh my father in heaven that was amazing thank you friend
The Queen baby ! Shout out to the great Carol King
I love the humbleness of Carole King being starstruck by the fact that Aretha is singing her song but probably not giving herself enough praise for he genius writing of it.
Also.. Gotta Love when Aretha stands I'm thinking ok she bout to get after it....she steps it up a notch then she throws down the fur and I'm like...ok it bout to get really serious up in here haha and of course the Queen brought it once again!!! Long Live Aretha in all the singers she has influenced!
Carol king wrote and sang this song originally. But, I think Aretha, just rocks this song. Powerful, beautiful, sung with so much emotion. WOW. RIP - ARETHA.
Love Aretha !
That's why she is The Queen of Soul
It was for Carole King the writer of this amazing ,beautiful classic song 😇🎙
That's why they kept showing her going crazy in the crowd ❤
One of my favorites. Music from era. The 70’s.
It was to honor Carole King who wrote this any many other great songs, I never even knew many of the songs I heard, was because she wrote them.
All Hail The Queen! Often imitated but never, ever duplicated.
Thank goodness that technology allows us to still hear the Queen of Music! Aretha is my favorite singer! Her voice never faltered! God blessed us with her!
You just saw a true American Treasure♡
She was around 73. I don't know how or what she did with her voice but she could make my spine tingle. Aretha was fantastic. For me she was best LIVE, taking us on a journey with every note.
As others said this was the annual Kennedy Center Honors and the song writer Carol King was the blond woman. As president, Obama happened to be in the audience. Recently Adam Lambert celebrated honoree Cher with a different, more intimate, take on her dance hit Believe.
That joy on her face.
I feel that every time I hear 'retha.
One of a kind
What a voice. I loved her.
Aretha was the greatest singer of the last 100 years (at least). Please check out her song "Don't Play That Song You Lied." There's a live version from 1970 on RUclips that is jaw-dropping.
hallelujah
So impressed by Ms. Franklin, but to truly appreciate this song you have to hear her do this when she was young and in her prime. Nothing beat Aretha back then! RESPECT!
I love that song. I feel like it empowers women. It's so beautiful. Aretha Franklin was one of the greatest female artist. Her songs are so inspiring to me. There a few powerhouse females in the industry. She sets the bar high. Beauty, grace, strength and soul. Women need more role models like her.
If you had not loved this video of Miss Aretha Franklin I’d have to stop watching your reaction videos. The Queen, at any age.
Aretha Franklin is the best feminine voice of the 20th century. She and Jimmy Hendrix were Freddie Mercury Idols ❤️
Oh, God have mercy. Such a brilliant talent. RIP. What we have lost.
Joss Stone did this song as a tribute to Aretha and she did a great job at it. You should give it a listen.
Love me some Joss Stone heavily influenced by Aretha!
Just regal!! That's a Queen!!
Oh God, No one will ever touch her voice. It is so majestic.
Just some info - this was from the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015. Aretha Franklin was 73 at the time. (Also, it wasn't a PBS special as you have in the title. I believe it aired on CBS.)
The Kenndy Center Honors: "Throughout the years, the Kennedy Center Honors has upheld a tradition of recognizing the lifelong accomplishments and extraordinary talents of our nations' most-prestigious artists." In 2015 the recipients were Seiji Ozawa, Cicely Tyson, George Lucas, Rita Morena and singer/song writer Carole King. Carole King co-wrote "Natural Woman" with Gerry Goffin and it was a big hit for Aretha back in 1967.
Aretha and Whitney! GOAT!!
The greatest female vocalist ever! ❤
There are only a few singers out there that you just know when they start singing, who they are. She is one of them. One of my favorites of hers is the version of the song "Think" that was in the Blues Brothers movie. I can remember being around 7 or 8 years old and digging that entire soundtrack. So good.
Ty the blonde woman is Carol King the song writer of this song and many many others songs that were very big hits
This is such a wonderful song. It charted in the top 100 in Canada, Australia, and the US in 1967, and in what must surely be a record, it charted in the UK for the first time in 2018 the week after she died, and 51 years after it was first released in the Country. I remember it on the radio in 1967 in Australia.
Carole King is one of America's best songwriters and performers. She wrote the Loco-motion for Little Eva, Up on the Roof by The Drifters, Don't Bring Me Down by The Animals, Into Something Good by Herman's Hermits, plus her all own songs she done like Jazz Man, You Got A Friend. Man just to write one hit song...
The words were written by her husband Gerry Goffin. The King-Goffin team were the apex of the Brill building sound. They wrote Will You Love me Tomorrow, the Locomotion, Up on the Roof.
Miss Ree WORKED that song. She was sick at this time, but didn't matter. She was and still is The Queen!
Aretha was battling cancer at the time she sung that. Far more powerful than you know.
Carol and Aretha in one spot. I don't think there is a modern day equivalent.
No one could make you feel a song in your soul like The Queen.
NO one does it better than Aretha...NO ONE
Ty, if you get a chance , have a listen to Aretha singing 'don't play that song' ...on the cliff Richard show. she was young then and it's very powerful.
ARETHA could kick the heavens .She is a National treasure.
During this tribute to the great CAROL KING, Aretha was fighting for her life, with pancreatic cancer. This was Aretha's last performance. President and first lady the OBAMAS, were in attendance for this epic performance.
It’s the ultimate sacrifice of a great artist in their own right which is Carol King understands another great artist and legend that Aretha was can take your song to a totally different level
This video might be a good psychiatric tool to sort the psychopaths from everyone else, because it's so emotional that almost anyone will be moved by it. It's clearly a peak moment in Carol Kane's life, and her joy is so profound, it's hard not to feel it. If you see someone watching this video without any reaction, well, that might be a good person to keep away from.
Never be another Aretha!
Real life problem may take me away from comments on the premier steam. My computer died and now I'm using my pad. Because I have dysgraphia it takes me longer to type one sentence.
The mother of all female american singers
The Gray haired women in the balcony is Carol King who wrote this and many songs. This is a tribute to Carol. Nobody sings it like Aretha The Queen of soul.
She looked like she was blond too me
Written by Carol King the blond curly headed woman.
The woman the camera keeps shooting in the audience, is Carole King. She wrote the song.
Two legends only thing better would be them singing together...
Aretha Franklin was one of the best of all time! Do her from the blue brothers (r e s p e c t)
She was battling stage IV cancer at the time too! ❤
Joss Stone
Son of a preacher man. She really compliments Aretha..
Miss Aretha brought this song to Church. If, I had a shoe close I would of thrown it, Lol
She was one of a kind. Her songs are rarely covered, because of her voice is too strong and smooth. She could do it all
She sure was. And when people try to cover her they don't do so great except for baby Aretha, Chaka Khan.
