This is one of the greatest live performances ever filmed. Aretha knows that she has little in the tank due to age and illness but she brings everything to this. The recipe.. a touch of soul, a sprig of diva and a bottomless pot of talent! For young performers who are stuck with the humdrum of todays artists....watch and learn how it should be done...by the greatest...Aretha!
And voice and her presence was still so strong.
There will never be an another Aretha. She was in a league of her own and still is. Such soul. What a woman! 👸
Yes. The moniker of the "Queen of Soul" is inadequate.
Never say never.
@@jimh3267 NEVER. Name one, just one, I dare you, go ahead let see that manufacture lie. Lol.
Most people don't realize she was an accomplished piano player. In the beginning of her career, she always played the piano when she was performing.
For more reasons than I can even begin to state here, I cry like a baby every time I watch this...and I've watched this too many times to count!
Me too ✋️
Me three. ✋
I can't help but get emotional too, she brought her everything to this magnificent swansong performance. What a gift she gave us.
Carol King's response says it all. How amazingly powerful Arthea's voice was at this time. She was in her mid 70s and she nailed it.
When Aretha died, Carole appeared on MSNBC to talk about her. She mentioned this performance, and said that Aretha had stopped playing the piano in public years earlier. When she sat down and started playing, Carole understood what a special tribute this was. It was the artist paying tribute to the songwriter. The Kennedy Center Honors have resulted in several amazing performances over the years.
Why on earth did she stop playing?!
@@popland1977 Because she was told that if she wanted to be a star, all the attention should be on her as the singer, which isn't necessarily untrue. It's hard to put the spotlight on a singer who's behind the piano.
@@djoetma , tell that to someone like Elton John (he's still alive) and see what reaction you get.
@@CabinFever52 Different culture and environment. And lastly, since Aretha was born during segregation and had to deal with the aftermath of that, they had to build her profile different.
Also a very different type of singer. Elton is a pop singer. His product is what sold and how he profiled himself first. For Franklin it was the show of her skill live. People came to see Elton John because of his music they came to see Aretha because of her singing.
There are a few performances of her playing piano , like on Bridge over trouble waters
Made me cry. To think it was just 5 years ago that our President honored and sung along with The Queen of Soul. It seems like a lifetime ago.
Aretha was 73 years old at the time she did this performance. At that time she was battling pancreatic cancer which we all know at this point took her life in August 2018. But to come out on stage and give this type of performance at that age on top of having major health issues is beyond amazing. But this here is what true Talent is. Not what we see today from these young female singers who come out on stage half naked, lip singing with 25 dances behind them flopping all around on stage.
NOBODY compares, especially these folks born in the nineties and more recently "trying" to sing now 🙄
So, so, so true. 👌🏽
Outstanding !! See Barak wipe a tear from his eye ? I get it.
I was 10 in '67 and had 2 older sisters so a fan of Aretha as a wee lad.
Great as this all is, Blues Brother's and she's telling Matt "Guitar" Murphy 'You better think'.
Sax player/café mate 'ok, you can go, too'. Priceless
Aretha is the definition of what real music does to another! Moves you inside!
My soul is wrapped in the warm embrace of Aretha's voice. Fil, this is why I watch your videos night after night. You remind me of things I shouldn't forget. There is beauty beyond compare in this world if you look with your heart. RIP, Aretha, you have all my RESPECT.
HELLO FIL. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I ENJOY YOUR CONTENT SO MUCH THAT I HAVE ALL MY FAMILY SUBSCRIBED. KEEP ON REPRESENTING MUSIC AND MUCH R-E-S-P-E-C-T. FOREVER MOTOWN!!!!
Fills the theatre fills the audience fills your heart and soul totally
Simply stellar performance!! There is only one Queen. All hail Queen Aretha!!! One of my favourite songs from the first album I bought as a young teenager - Tapestry by Carole King. It's still beautifully emotive listening 48 years on.
What a treasure Aretha Franklin was and still is.I have loved her since I heard her sing this on the radio in 1967!! Her performances were always outstanding. She always gives me goosebumps. Thank you Fil. I enjoyed the finger picking on the guitar so much. Once again you have brought us to the pinnacle of this marvelous Lady's rarified talent.
I have loved Aretha for a long time and many times have watched this incredible powerful performance of a song that is an absolute anthem from the Queen of Soul. The energy between her and Carole King is so moving. I did not think that anyone could make me appreciate the glory of this performance any more than I already did but, Fil, you have. The way this song builds is irresistible. Aretha's age adds to the poignancy of the performance, and she marks the crescendo of the song by standing up and removing her fur coat! The crowd response is palpable as they will her to take it to the limit! Which she does!! Fil, I love the breadth of your channel. Keep it coming.
Fil, would you be interested in reviewing Tina Turner's performance of "Whatever you Want" live in Amsterdam in 1996 when she was 57. It's so interesting how she uses her maturer voice. Thanks for what you do. It's inspiring and always gives me a lift :)
THE QUEEN OF SOUL, MAY SHE R.I.P., WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD, I WENT TO THE CHURCH OF REVEREND FRANKIN, IN DETROIT, JUST TO HEAR THE GOSPEL MUSIC, ARETHA PLAYED THERE ONE DAY, A DAY I WILL NEVER FORGET, COUSIN FIGEL
Caps lock broke?
Wow...I love this transcendent performance! Thanks for the great look at it, especially emphasizing the delighted Carole King . RIP Aretha.
Doesn't Carole have some great songs.
@@mevrammcoyoteV8f150 Hi Mark! She sure does...you could do a whole big list of "Songs You Didn't Kow Carole King Wrote"...Up on the Roof, (the Drifters) The Loco-Motion, (Little Eva) I'm Into Something Good (Herman's Hermits)! I read an interesting book called 'Girls Like Us', by Sheila Weller that looked at her life (as well as that of Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon)...they all made great music and awful choices of men!
She died so soon after this. She must have known that this was probably the last time she would play to such a great audience, and with legendary Carole King alongside.
Totally gratifying for us Wingers, and hopefully for Aretha as well.
Beautiful lyrics, chords and melody.
I listened to Aretha alot in the early 70's. She was so solidly the Queen of Soul. RIP and God bless.
Aretha Franklin - The Queen of Soul. There will never be another. Look at the reaction Aretha gets from Carole King. Priceless! Thanks for another excellent analysis Fil! Your diversity in your choices of music/performances/artists seems boundless. Keep up the good work sir!
Alright Fil u hit home with this one.
She was such a beautiful soul of life and women ❤️💗❤️💗❤️💗❤️
Aretha is 73 years old here. She was so surly not going to make a mistake. We are so Blessed being here with her at the same time. Thank you for everything you've left us Aretha.
This was a gifted woman...what a natural! She opens her mouth and spews forth beauty, soul, and such such tenderness. RIP The Queen of Soul!
A world class pianist Aretha rarely played the piano live at this point. Carole was blown away that she chose to do so for 'her' song. As we know, after Carole heard Aretha's version she said it was no longer hers....Aretha owned it!
Love that Carol King was so excited to hear her sing her song. I love Aretha Franklin! There aren’t many like her! Thank you for analysing her voice. And getting out your guitar!
How could you not get chills listening to this one Fil
Carole was being honored. She was blown away when Aretha came out.
This brings me to tears each time I see it. I am so happy that Carol enjoyed this so very, very much. President Obama's response was stellar as well. Ms. Aretha we will always love and miss you. You deserve your much needed rest. RIH❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏
Spoke to "Miss Franklin" on the phone at my job. I took the message to have the boss call her. Her home was close by and she was getting carpet from us. A small contact, but, hey now, she was the queen of Detroit!!
Nebbin dog- even if it was carpet, it still counts! I'm jealous. Thats SO COOL!!!
After hanging up the, I was thinking OMG, I spoke to Aretha. Her voice on the phone sounded so familiar!!!
All of the "Kennedy Center Honors" performances that I've seen over the years by any given artist or artists where excellent like {Heart - Stairway to Heaven} honoring Led Zeppelin, Carole king expressions said it all about Aretha Franklin's performance. would love in the future if You covered Aretha's history and career. thanks for this one Fil.
Brilliant appraisal of the great performance by Aretha. Thank you Fil.
Stunning. Fil, if you don't mind I'll give a one word synopsis. TRANSCENDENT!
OMG... that was so-crazy-good! I always identified this song with Aretha Franklin. This performance is on a level of professionalism and emotion that reaches into a soul and takes residence. And, of course kudos to King, Geoffen, and Wexler for a song that has transcended decades of popular music and never sounds old ♥️
That amazing woman cleaned her own house did her grocery shopping cooked meals for her family and still did this in her gorgeous non pc fur coat. My hero
I so love your passion brother! I look forward to each and every video. Tons and tons of passion to go with a natural love and knowledge for each presentation. Thank you again!
Aretha was 73 at the time of the performance and I’m so grateful I was able to see it. The VOICE was electrifying as was the room: she brought the electricity. I’m full every time that I see the recording because in it’s brilliance there’s nothing like being in the very presence of such legendary talent. She was battling cancer at that time and yet she blew the house away! It’s was a marvelous performance by one the most amazing voices of all time. Carole King was ecstatic and overjoyed. Thank you Carole for scripting a tune that the world over would never forget! Your artistic penmanship w/Aretha’s spectacular voice created a forever gem. RIP Aretha. 💐❤️
It's extraordinary. I come back to this again and again when i need an uplifting moment and to flush my eyes out
Aretha Franklin was, from the first time I heard her sing, at the top of my list of favorite singers. Everything she sang, she owned. Rest in Heaven Aretha. Your music will always be with us
Yes she did own it.
"Until You Come Back To Me" is a lesser known gem.
I had the honor of seeing Aretha in concert during the 80s. She was pure class and grace. What an amazing singer and an exceptional person. One of the best! I especially love her album "Who's Zooming Who" and her duet with George Michael. What a national treasure Aretha was. Thanks Fil!
This song was made for Aretha - what an absolute classic of the soul genre.
Rock!
:-)
I saw her perform live once in the 90's and it was an unbelievable experience. I was stupid-young with a bad attitude, only into alt-rock and grunge and yet I was still blown away. She truly was the Queen. Thanks, Fil.
She gave me the chills. What an amazing woman, with a ton of other great songs to her credit.
There is a reason Aretha was dubbed the Queen , because when she sang people listened.
@Lebo leigh Leigh A lot of people have big mouths like you Lebo, who just talk all out of the side of their necks, talking loud and saying nothing such as yourself, but Aretha now that's someone when she speaks, people stand up and take notice.
@@colorpurple4623 Thank you . People did take notice when she sang. Loved that movie color purple to bad it didn't win it should have 🤘
Ahhhh...Her Highness! So divine, so luscious, what an honor it was to know her music from the early years. I miss her terribly. I'd love to see you present Etta James, another knock-out singer. Maybe "I'd Rather Be Blind."
And, a shout-out to the beautiful Obamas!
At least the Obamas were doing something they were qualified to do : Sit and watch a REAL professional in action.
Superb analysis of a great performance.
Wow!!! ...🎤🎤👏👏👌👌👌excellent indeed nothing to add because both Carol and Aretha are great ... Aretha's voice is unique is indeed the Queen ... very good comments on your analysis congratulations⭐🌟⭐🌟♩🎶🎵🎼🌷🌷🌷🎹🎹🎸👍👍🔶🔷🔶🔷💜💜💜
You work so hard. I am still in the middle of your Bob Marley reaction. I need to work faster!
Take your time...it's a rich treasure trove, like stumbling into Aladdin's cave.
Ha ha, I am here now ready to watch.
😂👍
Great analysis Fil. Love this song. ❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Aretha needs no analysis. All you need say is...Aretha. That’s it. Such an incredible talent. I will mourn her loss for a long tine. I’m still mourning Freddie Mercury. And Carole King...another one that can’t be beat.
Feel free to “analyze” as many Aretha videos as you like Fil. Carole King too. Could watch them all day long. 💜💜💜
A one name diva who’s name says it all: Aretha. Love your assessment of that fact. 👍🏽
Thanks Fil. I grew up listening to that era of music and Carole Kings songs. A wonderful performance. You ARE a BOOMER!!
She was stunning in Muscle Shoals with Greg Allman. The Weight...
Oh, yes!
Gorgeous in everything
Aretha just had one of the purest voices in my lifetime. She could sing anything and sing it better than anyone else. Even doing duets with other greats, she would stand out. Part of my childhood from an early age, Mom loved her as well. On our stereo a classic day would be the sound track to a 2001 Space Odessy, followed by music from "Hair" and finished with Aretha. Great vid. nice analysis.
You said it, Fil. This performance was out of this world!
MAGIC!
What a awesome singer her singing was phenomenal aretha Franklin mesmerising performance
Just magnificent. Thanks for the analysis. Rockn it!
Never lost a bit of power in her voice. Wondrous performance!
She was (and remains!) the Queen of Soul for a reason. She just went onstage and opened a vein. She could go to space, with her voice, anytime she pleased.
One of your best Fil... stunning performance, well covered by you. Yeah the queen of Soul for sure.. and my other favourite queen - of disco - DonnaSummer, will be a good one too when you cover her too , I know . .. Would love to see a tape of Aretha singing at Martin Luther King's funeral service .... rock on, mate.....
We are fortunate indeed, to have witnessed this amazing voice
Fil She was amazing 30 years ago
I need for all the naysayers to listen to this analysis of the Queen's vocals, perhaps then you're understand why she is, was, and always will be the Queen of Soul And why she still reign as the Queen of Soul. There is nobody and there will never be anybody that will can compare to the greatness of Aretha as a vocalist and a musical genius. Aretha is a musical instrument and It's called "Aretha" #longlivethequeen #arethafranklin #thequeenofsoul
Wow - what an incredible performance! You're so right, Fil, that something like this comes along once in a lifetime if you're lucky! Please forgive me, as this may be an unpopular opinion, but this is an instance where I think perhaps the guitar was not needed during the analysis. For me, the powerful and moving performance and your words and passion behind them stand beautifully on their own.
Proper adoration for a Queen; just to see the reaction of all the VIPs in the audience is priceless. Could anyone watch a performance like this with a dry eye? I think not. Thank you again Professor for what you do. You are priceless.
A true force of nature, number one in my book! Loved her in The Blues Brothers to. Hope all is well with you. Congrats on all the subscribers, seems they know a good thing when they see it!
Thanks!
Aretha is a generational talent, no question. Her voice is truly amazing. I've seen her, Tina Turner, Linda Ronstadt, Patti La Belle, the Pointer Sisters, Coco Taylor, live in concert. And I listen to Billie Holiday, Diana Washington, Whitney Houston, Big Mama Thorton, Big Maybelle Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. But no one compares to Etta James. I had the pleasure of attending five of her concerts. It's a shame she never got the recognition she deserved. If you haven't heard of Etta, you may want to check her out., if not do an analysis of her singing. You won't be disappointed.
Any thoughts on Eartha Kitt? My Dad was a huge fan of hers.
Don't be ridiculous.
@@MaynardGKrebs-gv4vy Eartha Kitt was a great interpreter of music, with a style of her own. Not a massive range but still an impressive singer nonetheless. She had a wicked sense of humour and good comic timing as well. She could sing in seven languages, and very adept when singing French love songs. She was also an actress, dancer, and did a lot for civil rights. Aretha Franklin is my favourite singer although I like a lot of other singers as well, of various styles/genres. There's many vids on RUclips regarding Eartha Kitt
Just a brilliant work of art for the ages. RIP.
A Historical moment the will endure all time...Perfect! Thanks Fil!
Beautiful! I always say my favorite musical is "Blues Brothers" for the "T-H-I-N-K" tour de force with Matt Guitar Murphey and all the participants! ❤️. This honors concert was emotionally thrilling!
Aretha has always left me speechless. Thank you for this. Now I will shut up and listen to it again.
Aretha Franklin is so good she makes me feel like a woman and I am a man!
So beautiful! She is a once in a lifetime performer!
Grateful for these three women: Aretha, Carol, and Michelle.
“Oh baby what you done to me.” One of the best lines ever written.
Chills. Thank you, Fil. ❤️❤️❤️ 🌟
😮
jaime duenas , Lol. That’s great!
Funny, weird, perhaps true, best comment in a while lol
Absolutely incredible Soul Singer . One of a kind !
I wish I could have seen her . What a beautiful woman. ❤️❤️❤️!
Thank you Fil for featuring this wonderful performance. We all need an injection of soul, and Aretha is indeed the opiate that delivers.
Ok ok i admit it this performance brings tears to my eyes what can i say your right a once in a lifetime moment awesome!!
Aretha Franklin was just extraordinary. ♥️♥️♥️♥️Image being there?
What else could you possibly say?? You expressed exactly what I was feeling at such an emotional performance and YES she nailed those high notes. Also I LOVE that she sat down at that piano and owned it. So glad the camera showed Carole's ecstatic reaction to this performance too. Whew!
Can't help it. Had to see this again.
Your reaction is by far, the most heartfelt and beautiful I've seen yet. Love you Fil.
❤️ great video. I will always love Aretha. My mom used to put her on when I was little and we used to sing and dance. She was an amazing talent.
You should cover her doing Nessun Dorma, at the Grammy's - asked at the last minute to do it, as Pavarotti cancelled in 1998. That is unbelievable to watch her perform an opera song!
wholeheartedly agree, how lucky we are that this was captured on video for posterity. it's as if aretha and carol were for a moment in a beautiful symbiosis, carol encouraging aretha on, and aretha giving back in equal measure. add to that the outpouring of enthusiasm from the audience, and it is indeed a once in a lifetime performance. i agree the kennedy center honors have yielded quite a number of these standout live events. from a separate venue, one that stands out in my mind relative to aretha is when she stood in for pavarotti at the grammys and delivered a jawdropping 'nessun dorma'. the look throughout an audience's faces tells a thousand words. the queen of soul, indeed.
Luv ya Fil. Your humble and unabashed appreciation for these artists - probably more than twice your age - is heartwarming to witness. ty.
Hello Fil, The incomparable Aretha, the real deal. A legend in music, sad she passed. All the best, C.
What a voice, I close my eyes and listen to that beautiful song.
THE QUEEN OF SOUL!!!❤
"When my soul was in the lost and found" Epic🥰
Hi Fil...from North Carolina, USA. Here in the South, we call that type of performance “taking us to church” because of the level of passion and soul. When someone like Aretha does her “thing,” the angels sing!
Thanks for the analytical comparison between the original release and this performance 48 years later. Fantastic.
No one has had the ability to put me in a trance while they perform. I sat in front of the stage at a club performance she did so long ago (decades?) I was so engrossed in her performance that at first I did noticed she had walked near my table and looking at me AND not missing a note, she was able to change the words and tune and was singing 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. I was shocked back into reality and Aretha started laughing and went back into her song. How can someone do all this (how did the musicians know?) with such perfection. Something I could never forget in this life time or the next one.
Well, what do you say after that? This lady had so much talent there ought to be a law against it. She sung part of the soundtrack of my life and I thank her for it. You WILL NOT see the likes of Ms. Franklin again in the next thousand years. Carole King's reaction and expressions say it all. A classic song sung by the Queen...Great analysis Fil. The look of awe on your face says it all for us.
She was such a force to be reckoned with. RIP!
This and 1981 Montreal Somebody to Love. Sublime.
Aretha, The QUEEN, Long live the queen💎❤👑💕
Love this song so much...I do cry...some men do...Just for fun check out" Fresh Pots" Mr Dave Grohl..
Really great job on this one Fil! Thanks for filling in the details of which notes she was hitting and comparing to half a century earlier.
_"I don't like the term soul music, all music has soul, country has a lot of soul..."_ - Aretha Franklin.
No disrespect to the Marvelous Ms Franklin (I adore her) but you mentioning the frisson of a live performance overtaking the mere technicalities of singing. It made me think of the static electricity that went around the crowd when John Farnham sang with the Melbourne Symphony orchestra .
His interpretation of the Beatles song - 'Help' was just so stunning, we all had goose bumps. We stood there clutching our chests with our eyebrows raised to the top of our heads. It was another superlative performance - like you said, a once in a lifetime feeling.
We all knew he was good, really good, but this performance was out of this world and a lot of us were in tears. Paul McCartney said it's still his favourite rendition of the song.
Someone the other day asked me if I thought he was auto tuned. I just laughed at his millennial cynical question. No mate, they didnt have them in those days, and anyway, he didn't need it. Check it out Phil. (Please 🙏) I really value your musical knowledge and appreciation of other musicians takents.
Bro, loved how you included a guitar lesson. That was cool. But also, it’s your job to analyze-I love how you get into all the technical aspects of music. But equally, I love how this time you were like I’m throwing my hands up in the air, drop the mike, this is a once in a lifetime performance! You are a musician and a music lover, which are not always synonymous. Bravo Wings of Pegasus. Bravo Carole King. Bravo Aretha, the Queen of Soul. By the way, didn’t Aretha play that piano powerfully? Wow.
My mom would play Aretha on the record player when I was little and I still love her music.
When she drops the fur to the floor, it's a gospel church move.
