In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm paying homage to Carole King and Aretha Franklin, two of our most treasured recording artists from the last half century. Carole wrote You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman in 1967 with Gerry Goffin for Aretha Franklin. She later sang her own version on her 1971 album Tapestry. In this video, we're listening to Carole's original studio recording and Aretha's iconic live performance of the song from the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors Award Ceremony. It's a classic song perfect for our Women's Week of episodes. I hope you enjoy!

The best thing is Aretha put her handbag on the piano. This is a reference to when she would only preform when she got payed, in cash. She would then place the cash in her hand bag and put it on top of the piano so that it was right in front of of her. Wonderful woman 👍👏👏

Yep, I saw this when they aired it. That entire show made me tear up. I was in the 4th grade when my oldest brother went off to Vietnam. Before he left, he asked me to take care of his album collection while he was gone. I had a blast playing his records, and that is how I discovered Aretha Franklin. My brother was a huge fan of hers, then I became one too! I discovered Carole King later, whom I also adored. I miss the Obamas too! Thanks for stirring up these memories for me, Doug. ;-)

Tapestry has been a favourite album of mine for 50 years. I believe Joni was in the studio next door at the time it was recorded, and did backing vocals on each other's albums. It's at the same time a defiant and joyous song. I don't need to bring, and have brought to me, specific or definitive biographical or literal interpretations of the lyrics: imbibing that sense of defiance and joy I get is more than enough.

Ms King's "ricochet response" was golden. Ms Franklin was teaching the composer and vice versa. Teaching might not be the right word in some circles, but mutual admiration might do.

Thanks Doug, GREAT choice. This track and Tapestry are so amazing but I also remember watching this KCH that year and hadn't heard who was going to be on it, so seeing Aretha come out to pay tribute to Carole was amazing. Watching this again reminded me of the goosebumps to watching this that first time. Aretha's finishing flourish and Carole's natural reaction to it was just perfect.

My comment is based on the 5:18 mark: I believe Aretha added a gospel flavor and gospel choir-like interpretation to the classic Wexler/Goffin/King song.
Carole King’s Tapestry album was a staple item in our home. I was raised hearing her version of the song back in the 70s even when I was a teen singing in a gospel choir. I loved her very innocent (almost) airy demo-like version, on that legendary project. So, in my opinion, that well crafted track caused both versions to be labeled as stellar accomplishments.
In Aretha’s version, the background additions by she and her sister Carol helped to add almost like a Black preacher’s, what I call a vocal shuffle, or the uhh!” sound effect in a sermon, into her rendition. When combined with the beautifully crisp and clean recording, I honestly think that and the rhythmic space in the song, based on the waltz-like tempo, truly provides an emotional connection that draws or invites the listener into the presence of the song, emotionally. This is similar to seeing a black and white photo versus a color image. The former allows the brain space to interpret information. And this song’s construction or orchestration seems to be very inviting where you almost hold on to anxiously hear what is coming next.
Sorry. I love studying music. I just discovered your show and only made it to the 5:18 mark so far.😂!
Question: did Aretha change the timing? Is Carole’s a 6/8 timing and Aretha’s a 3/4 tempo? Hours later after listening to time signatures, I would ask if Carole’s version is 3/4 tempo and Aretha’s is 6/8?

11:08 Doug, thanks for calling out how the Obama's supported American arts, and in particular, American music. Do you remember the 2012 event "In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues", celebrating American blues? I remember the set by Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi was just killer. I had to look up the entire performer list, which included, hold onto your seat: B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark, Jr., Shemekia Copeland, Buddy Guy, Warren Haynes, Mick Jagger, Keb' Mo', Trombone Shorty, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, with Taraji P. Henson as the program host and Booker T. Jones as musical director (!). That might be a good series of videos to react to! [Side note: have to say the Tedeschi Trucks Band might be the best touring band on the planet right now. Frickin' tight with soul and the bayou blues.]

I would love to hear you react to a band that many have forgotten or never new to start with and that is Blood Sweat &Tears , without a doubt one of the most underrated bands of all time . Would love to hear you react to spinning wheel , you make me so very happy or when I die. The singer has an incredibly powerful voice, brass section, rhythm etc etc and there arrangements are incredible particularly the use of stops and silence . You will really dig them !

  • @jasonbroad5478

I'm late to the party but will throw in my 2 cents. The reason Carole was so blown away at the beginning is that Aretha rarely played the piano live at this point in her career. When Aretha was a young artist...many believed her piano skills were better than her singing skills which should tell you something about Aretha as a pianist. This performance was also meaningful because Aretha had pretty much stopped performing at this point and this would actually be one her last of this kind. For those kids who might be reading this....just in case you were wondering how it should be done......you have just seen it! A performance for the ages!!!

She died the day my 3 month old great nephew had his first open heart surgery. At nearly 4, he is doing very well and Aretha is thought of frequently.
