One of the problems with isolating Aretha is you lose her relationship to rhythm which is as breathtaking as her approach to melody. She would take gigantic liberties with a song, virtually rewriting it on the spot. She could splinter melody and phrasing to the point you think she’s lost the thread and then she’d instantly snap it back in place. She had a massive musical intellect. Ballet on a tightrope. Genius.
Wow, you would’ve been a great writer for album liner notes! Well said!
Ballet on a tight rope!! What a great phrase
Her ease is what I find so incredible. Never any sense of strain--just raw power when she wants it. Her voice goes wherever she throws it!
I have never meant her ,but l love this lady for helping me get through this life.
Those vocal parabolas on the pitch monitoring software were something else!
Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin could sing out every number in the phone book and I'd say "Again, please!"
I had the honor of meeting Aretha back in 2017. She signed my copy of her album Lady Soul. It’s one of my most prized possessions!
excellent breakdowns fil that shows why Areatha Franklin was called the queen of soul. as you know Areatha was a gifted songwriter and pianist.
Aretha*
I can’t lie, I love watching your expressions as you listen. You can tell you love your craft. Thank you for sharing your insights.
You have just hit the mother lode of singers with Aretha Franklin (Queen Of Soul). This lady started out singing gospel music, then R&B, but could do many genres. She had so many hits especially in the 60's-70's including "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)", "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Think" etc.
@ 15:08 "Fierce Conviction" on Her face!
I still cry when I look at her performance covering Pavarotti's absence at the Grammys by singing Nessum Dorma in his register so the orchestra would not have to transpose. Opera with a soulful edge. You can see the astonishment on Celine Dion's face in the audience.
@@senryu93 that's still my favorite performance of Aretha's. I remember watching it live. It still gives me chills, and tears.
A truly one of a kind gift. What an absolute legend.
The GREATEST singer of all time!!
Another superb analysis. Definitive proof Aretha's 'Queen of Soul' title was correct, well earned. Started in me a life long love of Soul/R and B, both as a listener and player. Side note - gifted songwriters Bacharach/David were certainly on fire with this composition. And those Drums! I could go on all day...
Listening to Aretha gives me chills. She's is second only to Mahalia Jackson. I think it's the Gospel roots. Spot on with the analysis as always.
Don't be ridiculous, Mahalia's voice was nowhere near as varied or as broad or as bright or as agile or as beautiful as Aretha's voice.
@@markdrinkwater1508 You have your opinion, and I have mine. Have a nice day, mate.
@@bonniesuerobertson5211 Ms. Jackson sang very inspirational music. However, she was never able to do what Aretha could do with her voice, nor was she probably interested in doing so. Anyway, we understand your love for both ladies. Blessings ❤
Mahalia helped raise Aretha. When her parents weren't being parents, Mahalia and other church women stepped in. She had a profound influence on Aretha.
@@markdrinkwater1508 Mahalia never had an opportunity for voice training. She was entirely self taught. That alone is impressive. But her influence on Aretha is undeniable. She helped raise Aretha, and I'm sure they were singing together much the way that Whitney Houston was singing with Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick, Darlene Love, and Aretha from an early age.
Another legend, the great Aretha. That voice. Once it has been pointed out to you, you can always hear gospel technique, and the improvisation technique that great gospel singers seem to have developed and used in their churches. And gospel certainly doesn't teach you to hold back lol. Great analysis, Fil. Brilliant as always!
Stunning! She's the best! The rhythmic give and take between Aretha and her backup singers is masterful!
I still listen to this recorded track by Aretha regularly. It’s great to see her perform it live. She was such a fashion diva too. I loved your in-depth analysis 👏👏
My all time favourite female singer thank you x
As always your smile tells the story
Fil, Aretha just blew my head off! What an exciting performance. I could hardly contain myself. Fabulous. I just couldn't sit still. I just wanted to get up and dance. Thank you Fil. Awesome. ☺️🙋♀️
BTW Fil, you have an amazing voice.
Thanks!
Great video, Fil! :) Aretha's voice during the late 60's/ early 70s was absolutely incredible: range, agility, vocal dynamics, everything! There is a great clip on youtube of her performing a song called Dr Feelgood in Sweden back in 1968 which will blow you away! She plays the piano too. And then there's Dionne Warwick's live performance of All in Love is Fair (1975). When you've got a moment you should take a look at that one as well. :)
Force of nature. All those gospel roots. Her live stuff with Ray Charles is great. Gotta love her phrasing
I'm new to your channel, but I've been busy listening. One thing that sticks out, is you. While you're listening to all these singers, its
clear you LOVE a beautiful voice with all of the nuances. Its so fun watching and listening!
@LISA Puskas yup, there are times I'll be looking at Fil because of his true love of music and admiration of gifted passionate singers.
This lady was a one of a kind. I first remember hearing this wonderful song as a little boy in 1968. A fabulous video Fil, your understanding of music is a joy to behold.
What a great soulful singer......such an inspiring back story too. Loved this beautiful artist.🖤 Wonderful respectful analysis as always. Thank you.
I'm absolutely tickled to see the smile on your face as you listen to her. She's always had that effect on her fans.
A excellent view! Appreciate the analysis of the Queen Soul, I will never forget how powerful she was in Blues Brothers as a kid I heard her voice in the Theater I was completely blown away! Lol I got R.E.S.P.E.C.T 🙂 for her absolutely amazing Vocal range a great job, Ty Fil, Cheers!
Your smile when you listen to Aretha is a beautiful thing Fil hon.♥️🌸🥂
I saw her at Massey Hall in Toronto. When I wasn't shivering with goosebumps I was crying with emotions. Legend.🥂🌸👑⚘♥️
Streisand next? People? 🏹👍
The Queen of Soul is a well deserved moniker! Amazing just Amazing . Fil fantabulous analysis as usual!
The LEGENDARY Queen of Soul followed after the super voice of Ms. Whitney.. wow, wow, wow Fil.. what a taste of great ear candy for you. You must have had as much fun with these two icons as you did with Karen Carpenter and Patsy Cline. Superior talents all. What music once was. Awesome and immortal.
Could not have said it better myself! After listening to all these beautiful voices, how can anyone listen to (most of) today's music?
🎯🎯👏👏
Fil, you said "this was insane" regarding Aretha hitting a high note. I say Aretha was amazing with her ease, her range, her power, her presence. One of a kind. Truly a legend.
I think Fil was using "insane" as a superlative, the same way people these days say a musical performance is just "sick"--meaning "so good it's beyond great."
Thank you Fil. I already knew Aretha was famulous, outstanding and, dare I say, peerless! But using this isolating software shows the phenomenal range, control and creativity of Aretha's voice. The way she moves from register to register is amazing, her confidence in free and syncopated time, but what I have not appreciated before hearing you break this song down - a song I thought I knew like the back of my mind - was that her range extended into whistle register (2:28.) And you are absolutely right, Fil, the longevity of her voice is testament to how in her zone Aretha really was in her amazing performances. Thank you again. Loving your content.
that f#5 'ah hah yeah yeah' is the pure embodiment of the ecstacy of music. The beautiful thing about Aretha is that she has the absolute confidence to exalt in her own talent while at the same remaining perfectly humble about her gift.
I love the intensity in her facial expression as well. I don’t see this too often. She stares into your soul and begs to be heard.
There's a good argument for that era being the golden age of female vocalists. Aretha, Ronstadt, Ross, Streisand, Warwick, Carpenter, Joplin, McCoo, Springfield, just to name a few. Thanks, Fil, for showcasing these marvelous talents.
Amazing stuff fil, thanks again for giving me a new insight behind an artists voice - Aretha is fabulous.
I've been obsessed with this performance for 2 years. It exudes magic, exceptional talent and ability like no other. It's mind boggling that it was created in 1970. The voice, the diction and the facial expressions are all magical. No one comes close to ever comparing to that. A once in a million years performance.
Ah the queen of soul.... Aretha Franklin
Now thiers a voice in which there's no equal. I saw the Movie Respect last year that was about her life. You get a greater appreciation for her when you see all that she had to endure in her life. Fil if you ever get the chance you should check it out. Thanks for doing an analysis on this legend.
Keep on rocking Fil 🤘
@Bobb Grimley thanks for correcting my grammar 😛 being dyslexic and all. I didn't choose the correct There Their or They're. Isn't that just the ______. I didn't reread my comment or I would have caught it. I know you mean well but I have had people correct me before in not the nicest of ways.
I absolutely love hearing African American's sing Gospel and Soul Music.
Billy Preston did a great job singing George Harrison's My Sweet Lord.. IIt just changed the whole dynamics of the song.
Please don't say that I am racist because I said African American. I am a senior citizen and am not sure what word that I am supposed to be using.
Just take it as the compliment that it is.
Your not racist at all. I'm with you 100%. You can always tell when a singers (both solo and back up) have grown up in a gospel choir. They are strong, powerful and fearless when they sing.
That is why she is the Queen and she will always be my favorite of all time. She had a complete voice matched with her piano playing. She didn't just hit notes just to be hitting them, she felt what she was singing and gave a song what it needed. She had excellent breath control and could release all the air in her lungs while singing. I just wish that Queen would have left the cigarettes alone she would have had this voice for many years after this performance. Side note Queen was quite beautiful in this clip as well.
Hi Fil, Great Show ! I've listened to this number so many times. However with the software you've captured now deep and nuanced her voice is. Thank You Fil ! Keep on keepin' on.....
Goosebumps!!
Great analysis, Fil. Thanks 🖤🕊️
Thank you for this fantasticly thorough and easy to understand review of an incomparable voice. Please post more Aretha! ❤
Amazing to hear the isolated track. Never got the impression that she wasn’t singing all of the lines. Quite an arrangement!
R E S P E C T.
The pitch monitoring software must have had smoke coming out of it after that song!
LOL
Thank you! Always educational and fun!!
I remember her song Jump To It in the 80s, her voice was still doing great things.
Have you done Sylvester yet? If not give his songs Living for the City and Rock the Box a listen.
I am loving these analyses videos of yours!
I enjoyed this so, so, so very much. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you so much for making a horrible day better and leaving me with a smile ❤
That was awesome.
And this is why she was crowned the greatest singer of all time👑rest easy queen🙏🏽
I played nothing but Aretha in my store for a full week after she died. She was a Goddess of Song.
It made me realize how important and awesome Cissy Houston is as a singer. A lot of that was her singing.
A great artist.🌹
Fil you are covering some of the best singers of our time!
Great voices from them and solid analyses from you! Quality music free of horrible marketing ploys used too often!
Wow, the range and variations on display in your analysis. That Pitch M software got a workout.
Ooooh, one of my favorite Aretha tracks.
This song-Ms Aretha could hit all the wrong notes & it would still be a Gem.
This has to be one of the very few voices that can stand comparison with Whitneys. A voice with such power and magic, it could reverse the spin of the earth. God must have one heck of a choir up there these days. I suspect the 'choir eternal' will be made up of some very recent additions.
Facts I feel like Whitney and Aretha are 2 of the best voices the world has ever seen. It’s like Whitney sings like a Angel while Aretha sings like the spirit of God. It’s rlly comes down to personal preference.
She was amazing!! I love her voice!! Thank you again!!
The absolute best….so much emotion …miss you Aretha!!!
The background vocalist are amazing too!! Such a difficult song to sing.
The Queen of Soul❤
Aretha will always be The Queen of Soul,❤💎👑
intersting you mention some singers lose some range from belting as time goes on. Phil have you seen her performance for Pavarotti on the Grammys, she sang Opera, and was phenomenal. Which was about 20yrs after the video you displayed. Great analysis as always,
Thank you for all these great videos❤.
Truely the queen. She’s absolutely incredible
We all love, respect and
Miss Aretha ❤️
All hail the Queen of Soul! Such a rich, soulful, and powerful vocalist. ❤️❤️
You definitely chose the "QUEEN" indeed! CHILLS CHILLS CHILLS down my spine! Simply AMAZING! Thanks Fil...excellent choice!☮
She was just so effing cool with her attitude and her style, plus one of the best voices the world has ever heard.
Thanks!
I love this song, and Aretha does it best. :)
My favorite female singer is Aretha Franklin. May Aretha Franklin rest in peace. Thanks for sharing this analysis video. Cheers, Fil! ✌️
Thank you thank you for analyzing Aretha singing this particular song. Learning that she was able to hit almost any note in chest voice explains her range of emotion. It must be why I have loved her all of these years!
I love Aretha. Never could sit down when I heard her! Thank you Fil!
"The girl was special. You knew it the moment she walked in the room." from the Muscle Shoals Documentary.
Thank you FIL
She maybe gone but her soulful music will continue on! Two of my favorite songs she recorded were Daydreaming and Call Me. These songs were so filled with both dreaminess and fiery passion. I heard them when I was in my teens growing up in Chicago. I’m in my mid 60’s and they still give me goosebumps.
Aretha.
I'm glad you played a little of the original recording since the voice recording software was a little hard to take with it's mechanical quality. But the tracking of her voice is phenomenal.
I grew up listening to her when I wanted, what a gift of a voice.
Listening to music with Fil is fun 😊
I’d love to see you do videos comparing some of these amazing singers with more recent covers of their songs.
My favorite song!
I love how you are Breaking this Down! Awesome 👌🏿 Nothing like Lady Soul.. don't forget about them Background Singers!! Brenda, Margaret and Pat...
I heard one of the musicians who recorded with her say that whether she was singing or playing the piano the moment she played the other musicians couldn’t resist picking up their instruments
Thanks for covering my favorite singer Ms Aretha Franklin.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!💯
My absolute favorite singer of all time 🙌🏽 such a beautiful voice 💓
My favorite of her songs....
Dion Warwick is great, too.
Both Dionne Warwick and Areatha Franklin verson of "I Say a Little Prayer" by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. charted well on the charts. over the years I seem to hear Dionne Warwick verson more. thanks for this one Fil.👍
Aretha*
Groovy
Aretha Franklin
Shivers down my spine! ❤️
Sorry Fil, that's my layman's analysis. 🤭
I love your videos! I subscribed a while ago, please do some new Whitney ones ❤️
Thanks!
Finally!
Would have preferred any song from "Aretha" or "Amazing Grace", but this will do. Aretha is the greatest singer ever, not because of the impressive range, but because it sounds like she isn't even trying..
I nominate Mariah Carey for an upcoming analysis. (Not that stupid Christmas song please)
She can reach a low F2 and hit an unbelievable G7.
Most of us can't even hear that anymore..
Evening Fil....love your analysis of all these legends!!
Keep up the good work.
A bit of a random one...but would love to see what Bjork (human nature) looks like on graph.
Cx
I mean Human behaviour!!
If you have a chance, check out Aretha doing “Rock Steady”, live on the tv show Soul Train. It was early or mid 70’s. I always loved that performance 👍
This song has always been one of my favorite songs by Aretha but has become more endearing since discovering it was inspired by a soldier deployed overseas.
I love these isolated voice videos, Aretha is great. Please will you do a video for Dusty Springfield’s “ I had a talk with my man”? She is so much more than her greatest hits songs. She has a tremendously varied catalogue, she could sing anything. Thank you!
Wow!!!!
Hi Fil, Fil if you can do a video on explaining what actually music producers do, their role and importance. I love the Beatles, been my favorite since I was a young boy. I was reading a bit about George Martin, and he produced I believe all of the Beatles work except for maybe one album (Let it Be/Phil Spector). I always believed the Beatles would have been great either way, but I think it was George Martin that really took them over the top. He seemed like such a great musical talent. I feel producers may be the unsung heroes so to speak in the industry. Again, if you get time, please do a video on this. I thank you in advance.
The greatest non opera female vocalist of all time. A phenomenal performance here as was most of her performances. Rather than particular songs I will mention performances. The 1968 Amsterdam concert in its entirety but especially 'I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You'. Reelin in the Years' 1968 'Dr. Feelgood'. "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman' Switzerland 1971 and compare it to the Kennedy Center Carole King tribute performance. And 'Nessun Dorma' the Grammy's 1998. Unique all and untouchable by any other mortal.
Would you consider doing a vocal analysis of Puddles Pity Party? I am astounded by his vocal range and especially his "clarity" (I can understand the words he is singing very easily). I think that probably his version of Blink 182 'All The Small Things' with PMJ is great for his low range, and his version of 'Royals' also with PMJ is great for clarity in faster sections and such.
I am extremely interested in his pitch. It sounds to me like he is intentionally off-key for expression I'm sure, but somehow it just "sounds great" to me and a lot of other people. I would love to see what his voice looks like in the software you use. :)
Anyway, if it's not up your alley I understand, but I think it would be really fun. Thanks for all of your great content, I really enjoy it!
Had to chime in on some 'Retha! Thanks Fil!
Someday we may get Céline Dion pre auto tuned? Just a wink nudge.
Dear Fil- it would give you great joy to watch Aretha sing Natural Woman to its composer, Carole King, when Carole was being honored at the Kennedy Center. She plays some beautiful gospel piano accompaniment to it as well. It was one of her last performances and it’s phenomenal.
o/ Hi Fil, I wish you could have found a recording that would have allowed you to isolate the vocals better, Aretha deserves better :)
