There are not enough words to describe Aretha Franklin. This was a 74 year old woman who was 2 years from dying. Yet, this performance confirms why she will always be a legend. She set the place on fire.

I love the way Aretha saunters in wearing a fur coat as though she's stopping in for a quick song on her way home. Carole King's love and gratitude is overflowing. Two greats whose gift and contribution will never fade. Well loved.

When Aretha Franklin sat down and started playing the pian you saw Carol King get excited. She was excited and shocked that Aretha stopped playing the piano in the later years of her life. Aretha Franklin sat down and played that piano for Carol King.

Aretha, her precision timing, phrasing and constant recognition of context and balance are something we only expect in the greatest of operatic sopranos. Aretha, singing primarily gospel, soul and R & B is an outlier in that respect. Very few singers ever or even come close. Perfection is rarely attainable but Aretha was as close as can be. Wonderful.

Absolutely one of my favorite live performances, without question. The emotion emanating from the stage was met in full measure by the audience's appreciation rebounding back to Aretha. I've always wondered what lie behind Carole King's shocked expressions. I know many of the Kennedy Center honorees are unaware of who exactly will be joining in the tributes. Carole King seemed to be successively shocked by, first, Aretha's presence, then, oh, Aretha's playing the piano, then OH, Aretha's singing as well. If I'm not mistaken, this was in the midst of or shortly after Aretha's illlness. What a magnificent uniquely American voice, life and legacy. Thanks for the analysis of her voice.

What makes this even more special? It was her last public performance before her death. She was suffering from pancreatic cancer, and was undergoing treatment at this time. It adds another dimension to this performance, at least in my opinion. She was staring death in the face, and was going to continue to do what she did best, right up until the end.
Btw ,where did you find this copy of the performance? It seems like it's the unedited version of it, and not the usual one that's seen not only on RUclips, but is also different than the original broadcast version.

How is that for vocal range???? I remember a weekend several years ago, I was online on RUclips. I clicked on Aretha's Respect. I called all of my children to me and told them watch & listen to this. She just opens hear mouth and these heavenly sounds emerged. She is so relaxed and great. At times you can hear the church influence in her singing. I thought Carole was going to hop up. She was enjoying this SO much!!!
Aretha is in God's arms and choir now. May she rest in peace!
Sweet Jesus that was grand! If that did not move you, go get a hearing test. Thank you lady.. Lastly they did not call her the queen for no reason at all. She was wonderful.... Thank goodness we have video and recording of her.....

I like the first assessment within the first three minutes. I believe she seems to carry life, or experiences, in a raw sense of maturity, which seems to be captured in her vocal style.
The opening alone seems to set a very warm standard as of being informally invited into her space. And that seems to be the “stage presence” we as numerous audience members are experiencing.
It seems intimate and almost innocent in the sense of a non-performance gathering despite having dignitaries and the songwriter gazing at her. And that is maturity’s ability to be comfortable enough that the artist can control the space and take us, as audience members, into their space rather than the other way around. No nervous energy is present in this legend’s 2016 presence.
But the BGV’s ability to highlight that song is worth acknowledging as well: i.e., 5:20-5:30; WOW! Absolutely stunning BGV’s, in my opinion.❤

It’s almost like there are two forms of art here. There is a powerful song and an incredible singer. To me Aretha’s genius is she knows the artistry of the song and even though her voice is the center piece, finds ways to let the song take the center stage and push the audience experience. And then come back in and out of that ebb and flow.

I love her song respect is an anthem, loved her in a blues Brothers PS you can’t say that the 2 blues brothers was not as good as the 1st, the 2nd one had such good music like at these with B.B king and others as well as having Aretha. She is the definition of what everybody aspires to be a lovely and true person who sang with purpose and with Respect.
    Lyrics to Respect
    Hey, what you want
    (Oo) Baby, I got
    (Oo) What you need
(Oo) Do you know I got it?
    (Oo) All I'm askin'
(Oo) Is for a little respect when you come home (just a little bit)
Hey baby (just a little bit) when you get home
(Just a little bit) mister (just a little bit)
I ain't gonna do you wrong while you're gone
Ain't gonna do you wrong (oo) 'cause I don't wanna (oo)
    All I'm askin' (oo)
Is for a little respect when you come home (just a little bit)
Baby (just a little bit) when you get home (just a little bit)
    Yeah (just a little bit)
I'm about to give you all of my money
And all I'm askin' in return, honey
Is to give me my profits
When you get home (just a, just a, just a, just a)
Yeah baby (just a, just a, just a, just a)
When you get home (just a little bit)
Yeah (just a little bit) Do it for me now, just a little bit
    Ooo, your kisses (oo)
    Sweeter than honey (oo)
    And guess what? (oo)
    So is my money (oo)
All I want you to do (oo) for me
Is give it to me when you get home (re, re, re, re)
Yeah baby (re, re, re, re)
Whip it to me (respect, just a little bit)
When you get home, now (just a little bit)
    R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Find out what it means to me
    R-E-S-P-E-C-T
    Take care, TCB
Oh (sock it to me, sock it to me
Sock it to me, sock it to me)
A little respect (sock it to me, sock it to me
Sock it to me, sock it to me)
Whoa, babe (just a little bit)
A little respect (just a little bit)
I get tired (just a little bit)
Keep on tryin' (just a little bit)
You're runnin' out of foolin' (just a little bit)
And I ain't lyin' (just a little bit)
    'spect
When you come home (re, re, re, re)
Or you might walk in (respect, just a little bit)
And find out I'm gone (just a little bit)
I got to have (just a little bit)
A little respect (just a little bit)
    Lyrics to Think
    You better think (think)
Think about what you're trying to do to me
    Think (think, think)
Let your mind go, let yourself be free
Let's go back, let's go back
Let's go way on, way back when
    I didn't even know you
You couldn't have been too much more than ten (just a child)
I ain't no psychiatrist, I ain't no doctor with degrees
But, it don't take too much high IQ's
To see what you're doing to me
    You better think (think)
Think about what you're trying to do to me
    Yeah, think (think, think)
Let your mind go, let yourself be free
    Oh, freedom (freedom), freedom (freedom)
    Oh, freedom, yeah, freedom
Freedom (freedom), oh, oh freedom (freedom)
    Freedom, oh freedom
Hey, think about it, think about it
There ain't nothing you could ask
    I could answer you but I won't (I won't)
But I was gonna change, but I'm not
If you keep doing things I don't
    You better think (think)
Think about what you're trying to do to me
    Oh Lord, think (think)
Let your mind go, let yourself be free
    People walking around everyday
    Playing games, taking scores
Trying to make other people lose their minds
Ah, be careful you don't lose yours, oh
    Think (think)
Think about what you're trying to do to me, ooh
    Think (think)
Let your mind go, let yourself be free
    You need me (need me)
And I need you (don't you know)
Without each other there ain't nothing people can do, oh
Oh, hey, think about it, baby (What are you trying to do me)
Yeah, oh baby, think about it now, yeah
(Think about forgiveness, dream about forgiveness)
    Think about forgiveness
    Think about it, baby, baby
    Think about forgiveness
    Think about forgiveness
    Think about forgiveness
    Lyrics to Natural women
Looking out on the morning rain
I used to feel so uninspired
And when I knew I had to face another day
Lord, it made me feel so tired
Before the day I met you
    Life was so unkind
    You're the key
    To my piece of mind
    'Cause you make me feel
    You make me feel
    You make me feel
    Like a natural woman
    (Woman)
When my soul was in the lost and found
You came along to claim it
I didn't know just what was wrong with me
Till your kiss helped me name it
    Now I'm no longer doubtful
    Of what I'm livin' for
And if I make you happy
I don't need to do more
    'Cause you make me feel
    You make me feel
    You make me feel
    Like a natural woman
    (Woman)
Oh baby, what ya done to me
    (Whatcha done to me)
Made me feel so good inside
    (Good inside)
And I just wanna be close to you
    (Wanna be)
You make me feel so alive
    'Cause you make me feel
    You make me feel
    You make me feel
    Like a natural woman
    (Woman)
    'Cause you make me feel
    You make me feel
    You make me feel
    Like a natural woman
    (Woman)
    'Cause you make me feel
    You make me feel
    You make me feel
    Like a natural woman
    (Woman)

You must watch and react to Arnel Pineda singing Faithfully live in Manila. He is the vocalist of the band Journey.

8 months ago you said you can't wait to do the next Lara Fabian reaction. I've been waiting. I would suggest Adagio or Caruso from the concert from Lara with love (1999 or 2000: the same than you did Je suis malade). Thank you :)

And THAT ladies & gentleman is how it’s done! Great reaction Bethany!
Side note: at the very beginning Carol turns her head and says…Aretha never plays the piano! Aretha was an incredible pianist and she rarely played the piano live…Carol was thrilled that she did so that night. The song was a big hit for Carol, but after Aretha released her version…Carol said…this is Aretha’s song now. Class acts…both of them!

The song was written for Franklin! Jerry Wexler asked King and Goffin to write a song for his natural woman. King and Goffin gave him writing credits.
