Here's where I need your help, he said he recently loaned it out to his sister and when he got it back to sell he said he can't get it to sew like it had when he first acquired it. (He said it sew'd amazing) It's bunching up thread on bottom side. He has tried new needle's, bobbin, bobbin tension, top tension, remove and re-install bobbin case etc. Now I don't know his knowledge of repair and diagnostics. Now he really doesn't want to sell cause he can't get it running. I hate to pass a clean BU for a more than fair price. Could it be as simple as the timing got knocked out ? I don't know how hard that is to do. Any thoughts of your would be appreciated. Thank you! Great explanation. I think I finally understand the relationship between the hook, needle, and scarf as well as why it's so important to get the orientation of the needle correct. I will watch your others videos next. One other issue I have is that I am restoring vintage machines and I sometimes have to remove the pressure bar and needlebar for a deep clean. So I have to get both of them reinserted at the correct height AND also rotated correctly! And yes, there can be a lot of dirt at the top of the needle, below the stop. Thanks again.
I so appreciate the high magnification shots you provided for us…very helpful. They served to provide a much needed view of how the tiniest bit of dirt or grime can be a crucial element in causing sewing issues such as skipped stitches. I noticed this in the magnified view of the very top of the needle hitting the metal stop. What do you recommend to use to remove grime (oily dirt)? Alcohol, perhaps? I have several machine brands and models, e.g. Babylock, Bernina, Pfaff, Juki, and vintage Viking Husqvarna. They are front loading, top loading, and side loading. I’m looking forward to your timing series…thank you!
Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I use mineral spirits to remove oily residue and alcohol to remove dried dirt and varnish. Alcohol can damage some finishes such as the clear coat on antique machine and the lighter colors on some singers such as the 400 and 500 series machines as well as the 6000 series vikings. But it does not affect the darker colors on those machines.
Brother XL-3001 Oscillating Front loader. Never looked at a sewing machine before last week. Done an old Singer and Bernina last week.. easy… this is a bugger… but as you say, might be the needle height. I already found one ‘mistake’ . My illusion my machine was out of time was I was not looking at the ‘hook’ , I was looking at the ‘horn’ in front of it !
Thank-you for making this video! Your detailed information and camera angles helped me understand the concept of sewing machine timing. I've recently taken my New Home (front load bobbin) sewing machine in for a tune-up/repair and the stitches are not catching on lightweight stretch fabrics. Oddly, it sews on woven fabrics. I've adjusted the pressure, made sure the needle was inserted properly, etc. I think the timing might be off. It seems like the hook is not passing through the scarf before the needle goes up. Something is amiss. After watching your video, I feel I can talk intelligently about what may be wrong when I take the sewing machine back to the people who charged me for the "tune-up".
Stretchy fabrics can be difficult to sew on. you need at minimum a ball point needle, I recommend a schmetz super stretch needle as they have done the best of all ball points I have seen.
I was working on a Bel Air Presicion 900 Deluxe with Zig Zag these machines they say are copy of Singer finally after days of working on it got it to work. checked the timing and was ok most of the problem was caused by clearance I set it some where between .004 and .008. My hook looks the same as in this video except has a beveled edge starting about 1/4 inch bach from point it had some scratches from the needle so I sanded it smooth. I installed needle other way around so you can easily see where the needle passes thru the scarf.
I truly appreciate your tips and tricks videos. I have a singer 2277 and recently it has started breaking needles. I am hitting something hard, mostly when I go forward and backwards. I have noticed my feed dog was sticking and I cleaned it really good and now I'm wondering if it is out of time. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hard to say for sure but sounds like you maybe using to small of needles or your pulling your fabric through your machine. You need to identify what the needle is hitting I suspect probably the needle plate. Did cleaning fix the feed dog issue?
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 At one point I was pulling the material, it had gotten stuck and I tried to help it through. I realized that could possibly be part of the problem so I haven't since. After breaking 4 needles, I switched to singer heavy duty needles and I'm sewing cotton material with elastic. After I cleaned the feed dog it hasn't gotten stuck but I feel a little hesitation every once in a while. I haven't seen through the elastic since then but it sewed just the material fine...but with a hesitation.
Greatly appreciate your very informative video!! Fixed my issue on my secondhand Singer 4016. Wasnt the timing, needle wasnt set correctly(may or may not have been my ignorance haha)
Thank you for this explanation, it's very clear. I checked my Singer Simple 3221 and the clearance seem fine. The issue is that the hook is way too far from the needle but from the front view. So the needle arrives between the spacing of the hook. More of a left/right issue than a front/back issue. It was the same problem I had before.
This is a wonderful video! Thank you for explaining and educating so clearly! I have an older (around 60’s era give it take some) Champion super de luxe automatic zig zag machine model 180. I have never seen another, note have I met anyone who knows about the brand, I cannot find any information on iron the internet either. It is front-load oscillating, the problem I have with it is when I drop the feed dogs ant try to free motion quilt it does not catch the bobbin thread. I can travel 3 inches or more without a single looped stitch.
Very helpful info, thank you very much. My machine is a White Model 1927. I almost started taking my machine apart myself and then decided against it after seeing your video. I can't find any info on this machine at all other than the manual that came with it. Your comment re thick material was key for me as my machine was working spendidly until I forced thick material through the feeder. I then lowered the feeder and that didn't help, so I raised it back up and it hasn't sewn since. But it won't pick up the bobbin thread. This has just started. I don't use it very often and just for basic straight sewing, but before I last put it away I cleaned and oiled it and it was working perfectly yesterday until I tried to sew through thick material. I assume it could be the possibility of the needle bar being moved. Is this something I can do, or do I have to take it to a shop? Thank you for all your great help. I will click on your link for email notifications for future videos.
Good possibility the needle bar got pushed up. If you can look at the needle bar and see where it was sitting then you may be able to do it your self. If you can't tell where it was sitting then it could be tough. Check the timing, if it is not correct then the needle bar probably got pushed up.
This exact scenario happened to me as well except it seems my needle bar seems so. In fact so low I can’t seem to get a new needle pushed back in there. The bar is very far down. Can I fix this or is it a shop issue?
Thank you for all the info! I have a late 40's-early 50's Singer 111w153. I am a leather crafter and I have it set up for sewing leather. It has been sewing perfectly. However, s couple days ago a PIECE BROKE OFF THE BONNIN CASE. Ordered said case, installed it..............threaded machine, it will not pick up the bobbin. Turned wheel numerous times. Out of 10 cycles, it hooked the thread once. I could use some wisdom. The 3 main factors of timing apperr to be correct. Obvisouly no!!!! LOL!
Excellent tutorial. Great teacher. A suggestion. I know you wrote a book, but as you know when it comes to reading directions such as this, seeing is always better. Why don't you offer a paid course following the book demonstrating visually what you are showing on each subject in the book. I would subscribe for sure (so long as the course is not too expensive( Just an idea.
Just found your video today. I have a Singer 8060. It used to run so quietly. Now it sounds like it hammers. I feel like it is out of time. I hope you can help me. I spent quite a bit of money on this machine and no one works on them where I live. By the way I love you video.
Thanks that is why my machine was missing a stitch I timed it on the eye not the scaff purchased some big eye neadles they are just about one mill longer when putt against the original needle I need to take that into account when timing and keep using the same needles thank again
Thank you, easy to follow. I have an Elna Lotus ZZ. Timing problems. I have loosned the two grub screws on the lower shaft, I may be 180 degrees out. Any advice would be appreciated, Thank you, Allan.
I am not familiar with that particular machine so I can"t offer much help with it. But usually if you are trying to set the timing on a machine and you make it 180 degrees out, it is because when setting the timing you turned the hand wheel in reverse rather than forward. I hope that helps
the Hook: I've had a few fine burrs and dull point on some of my vintage machines and I've used a white or pink (only) nail file (for acrylic nails) to buff out fine burrs and points. For the simple burrs it has worked. They are also good to buff circular beveled or unbeveled edges on plastic.
Hi! I am so glad I found this video! Your camera is excellent and you explain very clearly. Any chance you work on multi-needle embroidery machines? I think I am having a timing issue. Thx!
I have been servicing and repairing vintage Kenmore machines for about 5 years. I have never run into one that the timing was off until now. I think someone who didn’t know what they were doing tried to figure out why the bobbin thread keeps birds nesting and looping and breaking and messed with the timing.I have looked at my other Kenmore machines to try to figure out where the needle and point on the shuttle should be, and it appears that this machine is slightly out of time, but I have no idea how to adjust the timing on a vintage Kenmore. I have adjusted several Singer machines though but they were all drop in bobbins. This is a vertical front loading bobbin. The model I am working on is 158.17530.
Hello Faith, Yes vintage Kenmore machines don't get out of time unless someone who does not understand them starts working on them. I would suggest looking at the the gears on the lower shaft and see if anything looks as if it has had a wrench taken to it or see if any of the screws seem looser than they should be, as you know by now if it has never been loosened they are extremely tight especially on vintage machines. I would look start with the two gears behind the hook. Both of those shafts probably have a flat where one of the setscrews sits, make sure one of the setscrews is on the flat first then try to determine if it is the correct setscrew. Let me know if this works or if you need more help.
Thank you for this video. I was sewing two 2mm chrome tanned leather together then tried to sew a zigzag stick in a pair of leggings and it would not catch the right side of the zig. I was using a euro shark pro kind like a base singer with more stitches. How do I fix the sewing needle timing?
Thank you very much very helpful. I want to know how to adjust the zigzag stitch on my empisal expression 889 model, date 1926 Must I open the front cover of the machine?
Thank you so much for your videos. I have a Singer 6235 and it is skipping stitches very regularly and sometimes the upper thread is destroyed on the needle. The distance between needle and hook seems far too big. Could you give me instructions regarding this model or explain how to adjust this and which value should be correct ?
Kenmore 1913 machine, hoping to resolve my skipped stitches. Played with everything from tension to pressure, needles to presser foot. Hoping it’s the timing, I’ll get back to you!
my needle hits the wrong place on the bobbie holder, I was working with some stretchy fabric and it was getting caught up because tension seemed too tight. but the problem is the needle hits the wrong place on the bobbin holder. mine is a top load bobbin. Singer Quantum 9000 series
They should not be moving out of time. Next time you adjust the timing make sure the oil is cleaned out of the screw holes on the hook that hold it in place and put several drops of lock tight in so it goes all the way to the shaft as well as locks the screws themselves in place.
i just got a sewing machine for free bc there was an issue with the bobbin. After watching your video i think the bobbin is out of time. i have a Singer millennium series 6423. im not too sure/dont quite understand what to look for if the needle is also out of time.
I have a Singer Athena 2000 which I love...it is OLD but I have kept it oiled and lubed but just now my needle does not bring up the thread and catches on the bottom. It is a front load bobbin and wines in the machine. Thanks
The Athena was a good machine, unfortunately most of the parts needed to repair them are no longer available. There is several different problems it could have. Out of time, a broken gear, the needle bar release not properly working, the needle bar needs to be adjusted... Unfortunately someone familiar with the machine needs to look at it.
Do "universal" needles have different cut-outs which make it appear that timing is an issue? I have a machine which is not a Singer. I took it to be timed properly. I swear they did nothing to it. It is STILL skipping, even on the straight stiches! Thank you for also covering the placement for the point at the left and right side of the zig-zag.
@@krystleroy3068 can I email if I have any problems? It would be so nice to have a wonder-sewer fairy on my shoulder when I sew so that I could know my mistakes and correct them before they become habit!
I understand everything you are saying if I put my needle in wrong will that coz my needle to brake that's my problem this was my mom's machine it's old like 55 years old would like to use it
On some machines putting the needle in backwards can cause it to break, there are also many other reasons a needle will break. Make sure the scarf is facing the hook, ensure you are using the correct type needle, make sure the needle is not to small for what your sewing, make sure the machine is properly threaded. Y must raise the presser foot before threading, once threaded put the foot down and pull on the thread and ensure it has tension on it.
I have a Pfaff 1475 CD and adjusted its timing as you described. I corrected the problem of not forming a stitch but now the presser foot doesn't drop enough to move the fabric and I have to push the reverse button in order for the machine to advance forward. Any ideas as to how I may correct this? Thank you.
Thank you so much sir for your videos, they are very helpful. My machine is 20U34 Singer. It is not stitching properly, the stitches are irregular and makes gathers at the end. The spring on the bobbin broke. Could it be it lost timing or it is due to the spring that broke?
If it is stitching then it is probably not the timing. I don't know what you mean by irregular that could cover many different problems. Maybe you can better explain it. If the spring on the bobbin case broke then you need a new bobbin case. Gathering is usually related to improper tension balance and overall tension to tight
Thank you for your videos! I have a white sewing machine model 639 that has timing issues. The hook does not go past the needle in order for it to grab the thread On the needle upstroke. I cannot find any videos on fixing the timing. I’m hoping you can help me? Thank you!
New to me Domestic brand 511. Needles are breaking. Needle is stuck in Hook. Thread jams. I have threaded and rethreaded multiple times. Check for burs on .needle plate. She got a kerosene bath and she's all oiled up.
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 I sent a reply but my computer says it can't deliver. This is a test. Please let me know if you get this reply. Thanks. Ed
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 Well I disassembled the bobbin area to clean it. It was FULL of old thread. In the process my marks I made so I could reattach everything got erased. I made the best GUESS on how the machine went back together. There is a support that holds the plate up, the plate has the teeth in it that the needle passes through and pull the fabric along. The support that holds the plate up has a outward protrusion. The bobbin holder has a inward protrusion. I put the two together and the bobbin holder does not turn. The needle goes up and down without hitting anything. Problem fixed I thought. WRONG, needle will not pick up the bobbin thread. If I don't fit the outward and inward protrusions together, the bobbin holder turns, but the needle hits the outside of the bobbin holder it will stop the machine. All of the testing has been done by MANUALLY turning the wheel so the needle goes up and down. I have to say, your video is supurb. Very well done in a simple language and excellent pictures. Like I mentioned in my comment I learned stuff that I did not get from other videos. Hope my "letter" answers your questions. If you need more I might(?) be able to attach a photo . Not much on these new fangle things. That's what I get for being a dinosaur. Ed
I have a Necchi 537L that is definately out of timing. When the hook reaches the 12 0'clock position the point of the needle has reached the bottom of the needle plate on the upward part of the stroke. I can't lower the needle bar as some videos suggest because the needle would hit the bobbin case on the downward stroke.
15:00 If different needles have different size scarfs, how can you set the timing? 25:00 Any idea how to adjust the hook-needle clearance in older front-load machines. My machine doesn't have a front-back adjustment mechanism for the needle bar.
I though my timing was off but it turned out a needle was bent away from the hook. After straigtening the needle, the zigzag stitch is perfect even at the widest setting
Heavy duty 4452 there's a clicking sound that it makes when the needle is coming down to meet the hook. should the hook be right above the eye at that time? what is the position that the hook should have when this noise happens? It sounds like a simple fix.
If it is looping and bunching up then it is probably a simple fix.

Excellent information. Great clear close up of machine workings. Thank you.
That was a very detailed video and thanking you profusely, it is the best ,very well explained .
Stretchy fabrics can be difficult to sew on. you need at minimum a ball point needle, I recommend a schmetz super stretch needle as they have done the best of all ball points I have seen.
this is the best video on this subject ive seen so far
Excellent instruction. It will help me troubleshoot in the future.
Awesome!
I am happy to be able to help!
Thank you for all of your videos. Currently working on a brother XL-5130 that is missing stitches.
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079
At one point I was pulling the material, it had gotten stuck and I tried to help it through.
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 my needle plate does look like I have hit it, what would be the cause of this?
Greatly appreciate your very informative video!! Fixed my issue on my secondhand Singer 4016. Wasnt the timing, needle wasnt set correctly(may or may not have been my ignorance haha)
Easy to understand and your explanation makes sense, thank you for the explanation.
I'm going to keep looking at your videos. I'm sure i'll find the issue soon.
Actually I had to replace the needle and adjust the timing. Thank you so much. It works no problem now
how did you adjust the timing?
Very clear instruction for timing.
Got a Pfaff 130 that seems to drop time much too frequently and easily. Great video
Thank you for this really clear and informative video, so helpful!
I am working on a front loading Singer Tradition 2263.
Thank you for video. I have timing problem with my machine.
You need to figure out why it’s out of time in order to repair it.
Just found your video today. I have a Singer 8060. It used to run so quietly. Now it sounds like it hammers. I feel like it is out of time. I hope you can help me. I spent quite a bit of money on this machine and no one works on them where I live. By the way I love you video.
You are a tremendous help. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Thanks that is why my machine was missing a stitch I timed it on the eye not the scaff purchased some big eye neadles they are just about one mill longer when putt against the original needle I need to take that into account when timing and keep using the same needles thank again
My grandmother used to say that all the time,we had at least 5 sewing machines in the attic!
explanation very clear with good video but no mention of how to find screw to adjust the up and down thing
Thanks for the help!
Thank you, easy to follow. I have an Elna Lotus ZZ. Timing problems. I have loosned the two grub screws on the lower shaft,
I may be 180 degrees out.
Good video…carefully and slowly explained.
Do you have a video/videos on how to safely remove and reassemble the covers on a Kenmore 385 15622?
the Hook: I've had a few fine burrs and dull point on some of my vintage machines and I've used a white or pink (only) nail file (for acrylic nails) to buff out fine burrs and points. For the simple burrs it has worked. They are also good to buff circular beveled or unbeveled edges on plastic.
Thank you! So happy to find your channel.
Hello Faith,
Yes vintage Kenmore machines don't get out of time unless someone who does not understand them starts working on them.
@@tylermorris5577 sounds like it is slightly out of time.
Thank you very much very helpful. I want to know how to adjust the zigzag stitch on my empisal expression 889 model, date 1926 Must I open the front cover of the machine?
I am not familiar with that brand, sorry
Such a good video.! You did a great job of recording it. Thank you.
Your very welcome!
I appreciate that, thank you!!
excellent close up videos the best ive seen
Thank you so much for your videos.
I have a Singer 6235 and it is skipping stitches very regularly and sometimes the upper thread is destroyed on the needle. The distance between needle and hook seems far too big.
Could you give me instructions regarding this model or explain how to adjust this and which value should be correct ?
Kenmore 1913 machine, hoping to resolve my skipped stitches. Played with everything from tension to pressure, needles to presser foot. Hoping it’s the timing, I’ll get back to you!
if you are still having problems this video might help.

my needle hits the wrong place on the bobbie holder, I was working with some stretchy fabric and it was getting caught up because tension seemed too tight. but the problem is the needle hits the wrong place on the bobbin holder. mine is a top load bobbin. Singer Quantum 9000 series
Wow, very impressive, thanks.
Thank you!!
thanks so much for your kindness. it's a great help! :)
Your very welcome, thank you!
I have a Juki 1181 front load bobbin. I also have a top load bobbin Juki both tend to go out of time as I repair horse blankets
Maybe side load for my 1181 Juki
They should not be moving out of time.
Next time you adjust the timing make sure the oil is cleaned out of the screw holes on the hook that hold it in place and put several drops of lock tight in so it goes all the way to the shaft as well as locks the screws themselves in place.
Mine is a 70s model Janome marketed as a Compact 3690. Front load bobbin.
i just got a sewing machine for free bc there was an issue with the bobbin. After watching your video i think the bobbin is out of time.
i have a Singer millennium series 6423. im not too sure/dont quite understand what to look for if the needle is also out of time.
Another great video
I have a Singer Athena 2000 which I love...it is OLD but I have kept it oiled and lubed but just now my needle does not bring up the thread and catches on the bottom. It is a front load bobbin and wines in the machine. Thanks
The Athena was a good machine, unfortunately most of the parts needed to repair them are no longer available.
There is several different problems it could have.
Out of time, a broken gear, the needle bar release not properly working, the needle bar needs to be adjusted...
Unfortunately someone familiar with the machine needs to look at it.
Thank u very much. Very informative.
Morning I have a problem with my thread is jumping and tension nop is loose please help
No, so long as the the machine takes 130/705 needle system a universal is fine. There are many things that can cause skipping.
Thank you very much!

Than;k ;you very much.. ;your videos are so clear.. I have a 20-51 artisan industrial machine. Will try to apply your sugestions . thank you again
excellent way to explain. thanks
I have a Pfaff 1475 CD and adjusted its timing as you described. I corrected the problem of not forming a stitch but now the presser foot doesn't drop enough to move the fabric and I have to push the reverse button in order for the machine to advance forward. Any ideas as to how I may correct this? Thank you.
Thank you, very good video and explanation.
I have a singer creative touch fashion machine 1030. can't get the bobbin thread to come up. this was my grandmoms sewing machine.
should there be free play or lag between the bobbin rotation and needle movement ? I have this free play.
I have a huskavarna mega quilter. I broke a needle and after than it would not puck up the bobbin thread. It is used only for quilting
I have been waiting for your video on end load bobbin timing to be added. Is it coming soon?
Thank you for your videos! I have a white sewing machine model 639 that has timing issues. The hook does not go past the needle in order for it to grab the thread On the needle upstroke. I cannot find any videos on fixing the timing. I’m hoping you can help me? Thank you!
Yes, your making since.
New to me Domestic brand 511. Needles are breaking. Needle is stuck in Hook. Thread jams. I have threaded and rethreaded multiple times. Check for burs on .needle plate. She got a kerosene bath and she's all oiled up.
Hope you do a video soon on how to fix the timing, my machine has
A problem it won’t stay in time no matter what I do.
I think I have set the timing on a Brothers Galaxy 8015. Can you show a video on this machine. Problem, needle hits bobbin stuff.
What do you mean the needle hits stuff, What is it hitting?
Does it only hit when your sewing or even just turning the handwheel with no fabric.

Yo hi, I changed the pinion hook gear on my Elna 1000: how do you time the hook to the needle? At zig-zag or strait stitch? Thanks..
a front-loader.
I'm having problem with the top thread not picking up the bobbin thread. I've watched all the videos in this series I just wanted to make sure that I'm headed in the right direction!!
i have a 834 stylist the needle slams into the feeds dog when i try to sew. The timing mark underneath is lined up at bottom center.
How do you adjust the hook timing on a Bernette 50 machine?.................Thanks, Jim
