I've been on a decluttering journey for a little over two years. I started with only cleaning off one counter in my kitchen. It felt so good and energized me to gradually get to the whole house. My motto was "five minutes matters".

I kept bouquet for years too. Same reasoning and feelings then I pitched it too. I had forgotten about it til hearing your story. Thanks for the reminder to not keep things out of guilt or because we think we are supposed to.

We recently went through our kitchen & got rid of over 200 items...yes, I counted. 😆 I kept the stuff for a month to see if I would need anything out of it. I only pulled out 3 things so we finally dropped off the rest. It is so freeing.

Thank You for something I can use that I hadn't heard on other decluttering sites -> *** When I take off a shirt I don't like anymore, put it in the decluttering box. Every time I use something that doesn't work write (of course not broken items) or I don't like this thing -> put it in the decluttering box **. I always try to wash and iron clothes and clean every object before putting them in the declutter box. Which has resulted in my having to touch them a second time before letting them go. If I don't declutter in the moment, I'll forget I didn't like the item and return it to where it was before. EXCELLENT IDEA....

Really good and sensible tips Shannon. When I started decluttering; I just knew it would make me crazy to take the whole house apart at once. I like your suggestion to just start. Thanks for sharing.

Great video Shannon. I find it so helpful to always have a bag or box in my donation corner. I drop items in there regularly, and make a trip to the donation center every month or so. And my home is already highly simplified! Such a wonderful freedom

Your wedding dress was beautiful, and you were a beautiful bride. I understand exactly about the flowers. I have a similar story. My wedding dress had sequins that were glued on rather than hand sewn and afterward, it had been laundered instead of dry cleaned. So in saying that, it was literally a mess. My mom had placed it in a box to store it anyway and for over 20 years it just set there, in that 📦, as we moved from place to place. I had just assumed that you can't toss out something like that... especially when it was handmade by your own mom.....but when I finally got the courage to lift the lid and look at it at around our 25th anniversary, my daughter gasped and said, "Mom, it looks awful and it doesn't smell well either." (Haha) I asked her if she had any attachment to wanting to ever have it for herself even though it would not have fit her plus it was simply a mess. She encouraged me that she had no wish for it and it was good enough that I had showed it to her. It had to be recycled as it was literally deteriorated.
In my heart, I still feel like if I told my sister and Mom thus story, they would think it was terrible that it went to be recycled. But it's like you said Shannon, it's not the physical item that holds the memories it's the memory itself, right?
I think this video was an excellent example of how we need to remember this. Thank you so much for getting the message out there. I am quite sure you have relieved so many people of unneeded guilt and agony!
To add another thought, my husband had only rented his tux back then for our wedding day. A simple, rent & then return. So why then, so much attention put on the bride's gown 🤔as a symbol of priceless item. Hmmmm...

I don't have trouble decluttering but my husband does. What works for us is with his things is to declutter only one tote at a time. I wait a couple of weeks or sometimes a couple of months then ask him to check another tote. He declutters much better when he doesn't feel pressure.

Joshua Becker just came out with a youtube video of "20 Things to Declutter" to help you get started. I'm a bit into my decluttering process so only needed to do a couple of them but it would be very helpful for those just starting.

Hi Shannon! I don't know what it is...I'm feeling completely stuck 😕...
We received presents for our newborn and more things and I really didn't need all the extra stuff...
I feel guilty because they are huge blessings and I don't know what to do.. so, yes..definitely the guilt contributes to the feeling of overwhelm...

I agree it can be so hard to get rid of things, especially gifts! I just use what I can and donate the rest. The good thing with a baby is they grow through things so fast! =) I hope you are doing well.

Hi@@laurawade4115 , that's exactly how I feel... in all honesty, sometimes bother me to donate to goodwill places because they end up charging people pretty high prices, at least where I live... so, I'll be looking for ways for these items to go to people in need free of charge 🥰💝

Return them and use the store credits for diapers or things you do need! By doing this, you are still able to "use" the blessings others gave you. :)
