I think I hit most of your points in some ways.
It is said that "Tradition" is "Peer pressure" from Dead people.
As they say 'all roads lead to Rome '. I only just came across your channel, and serendipitously so, owing to your review of the Morisaki book. It was also the playful cover which caught my eye as the book laid on the dashboard of an uber ride i was taking to Sunday mass, which prompted me to strike up a conversation with the driver who gave pretty much the same recommendation you did. Good stuff.

This one hit home, deeply so actually. I feel all your advice can fall under the first point of learning from one’s history.
I honestly can’t count the number of times I threw care to the wind and let the dice fall where they may on all accounts…most regrettably so…..I still have one friend who lives this way and his life is pretty messy and unappealing.
For me, it truly took the love of a magnificent woman and opening my heart to drive this wisdom home and put it in practice. I’m reassured by your wisdom that I’m on a better path👊.
I was a bit 'devil-may-care' for a period of my life, I now look back on this period as my 'wilderness years'. They were ostensibly great when viewed by others. The women, wine and travel. But really it was loneliness, hangovers and self-loathing. My life came into focus when I began to think of it as a plot to a book and that I was in fact the author of that book. It was up to me to decide the way that the book ended - so instead of randomly thrashing out and occasionally striking the keyboard, I decided to sit down and start typing to a plan. From my chaos was born a future, a future that has turned out well for me so far.
So my advice to others.... be the author of your book, don't just read about what happened after 30-years!
More good advice Ash. Especially starting early at managing money. My grandmother taught me at a very young age how to save and it is help me all during my life and I am reaping the benefits now in my retirement. Learning from history is also something I have learned and wish our leaders would do the same. Lifting the lives of others is a core value for any gentleman and is or should be the core value of any religion. Great looking outfit today ash. Love the tweed jacket. Cheers Ron
For me, a faith journey is not about reaching an answer or objective, but continuing to grow and evolve. Life, after all, is a journey. For me, part of it is a better sense of what I should do. I do not choose to set on my haunches and bay that I have the final and ultimate answer.
For those who do not know it, the Benne Gesserit Litany Against Fear is from Frank Herbert's great novel Dune. It is:
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
You can remove feeling stress by meditating. It will bring inner peace. Any technique will work (I use Mindfulness). Any amount of time is of benefit. Many people use 20 minutes. I use 35.
Try once or twice a day reading the Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear. Do it for months, and your fears will diminish and vanish. You may have concerns, but not the devastating effects of fear.

I prefer a walk in nature, abut as you say other techniques are available! I find the passing of scenery, and the unravelling of the understanding of plants and animals, helps to cleanse the mental palette

I agree that we should study history, not only to learn from our mistakes, but also to gain inspiration from the past. Just as we can find inspiring examples in the great men of history (Churchill, Lincoln, etc.) we can also take comfort from past occasions in our own life where we've triumphed over adversity.
Very good video, Ash. Some excellent advice that is worthy of careful consideration for everyone.
I would like to emphasize one of your advice points: financial planning.
This is a sore spot for me because I did not do a good job of it. When I was young, I recall hearing vague advice to save for the future, etc., but it was never really hammered into me in any meaningful way. I am now 62 and I got serious about retirement investing much too late. I’m set up for a reasonable retirement in several years, but not nearly as good as it could have been. It really cannot be emphasized too strongly for young people: set up a long-term retirement investment savings plan and begin putting money into it as early as possible. I know when you’re a young person earning little money, it seems like too much of a burden to set some aside for long-term savings, but with regular deposits starting very young, it will grow much more effectively than if you wait until you’re in your 50s as I did. I really wish somebody had pounded this into my head when I was a teenager.
Great Part 2 to those recommended 'rules', Ash, with which I heartily agree. Your penultimate point about not blindly following a predetermined direction (because of background/family etc), but questioning and finding your own path is something I advocate and have done, in spite of meeting resistance in my late teen years in my 20s. It worked out well for me, and eventually brought respect from those who earlier objected to it (although this isn't always the outcome). Knowing how to live and unfold your destiny by following your own path through questioning, learning, and challenging in pursuit of greater wisdom is very laudable, and a great trait to possess. Nice summation and definition of 'history' too and learning from it.
Can't argue with any of the guidelines Ash. My life has been without role models or having been given advice such as this. I've pretty much made my mistakes and learnt from them. Problem with that is, one falls behind as it takes time to recover. So for those young gentlemen, listen to Ash and save yourself time, money and get ahead sooner and probably with a bigger bank balance to boot !

Before making any major decisions, I try to imagine how will I look back at this decision when I'm eighty.
With regards to politics, wars, religion, etc. I normally think "What would an alien looking down at planet Earth think of that....."
I couldn’t agree more, Ash. The study of history is precisely why I have so strongly recommended the book DeathBySocialism by JM Rock.
To add to your point, I also find that doing research about what, or who, to believe or follow has as much to do with humility and courage as well. That is, are you willing to accept the truth and follow where it leads, when appropriate, reveal it to others and defend it? I think many people switch their beliefs to the next novel ideology because it is easiest, without much respect for rational thought, or even without doing much research.
I think it's important to mention as you don't need to be a Scholar, but anyone can possess humility and courage. If the truth sets us free, then novelties enslave us.

I became a Christian and did not grow up in a Christian home. Many parents I know want to make sure their kids' faith is their own choice and not just because it's in the family.
Other than a mortgage I've never had a loan. If I don't have the money I won't buy it. If I got a loan my Good Lady would seriously kick my posterior.

I especially liked the tip of making up your mind on your own.
That being said, I do believe there is nothing more natural than establishing the ground of our beliefs based on what we learned from our parents.
Beliefs we get from our parents are a necessary part of our evolvement as human beings.
Your son learns from the values and beliefs you instill within him by mere example. It can be aesthetic values or moral-intellectual values.
Now let’s say that one day you alter your mindset about something (for instance - like you did about the Rolex brand). Does that mean that you mislead your son or prevented him from being an independent person? I don’t think so, not necessarily.
I follow your angle here, however, whilst I enjoyed Rolex, I never believed that Rolex was a supernatural deity that ruled the universe and demanded my blind obedience for fear of eternal damnation, at the same time as expecting me to disregard natural science along the way. But that is actually a poor comparison, as Rolex probably does demand such things from customers these days!
Not to be a radical or anything, but I'm having lunch with my 22-year-old daughter tomorrow who recently graduated from college. Most of what you spoke about (in these last two episodes especially) applies equally to her. Of course, she won't be a chap, and I'll give her a break on the top hat and waistcoats, but I'm hoping she will be a self-aware and happy young lady who is a credit to her dear old dad.
I'm not persuaded that Ash has reached "the end" of his faith journey.
I agree with Ash’s comments about taking a faith journey but I agree with you - the very nature of faith is a journey.

We have it on loan from our children.
Lastly: be the staunch friend your friends deserve.
I spent thirty years teaching Canadian History, Modern Western Civilizations, and International Baccalaureate History, and I couldn't agree more that those who do not study the past will be condemned to repeat it.
Moderate daily exercise, communing with nature, and socializing with friends are all essential habits that will go a long way to helping one maintain one's physical, mental, and emotional health.
As Plato said, the unexamined life is not worth living. Civilized people are those who question, analyze, and critique the ideas, attitudes, and behaviours of their family, their community, and their culture, and live by standards that are freely chosen rather than imposed upon them.

Hey Ash, sorry to be “out of the subject” but, are the sleeves of your jacket too long? Or this is a new trend Sir?
"End of my faith journey"? Are you certain of that?
Oh yes... a journey of over 10-years and many questions asked of traditional wisdom. I certainly followed my own advice and found the answers that I had sought from childhood. I challenge any adherent of a traditional belief, to examine their soul and ask of themselves a simple question - "Do I believe this ideology because I actually believe these teachings? Or I do believe these things because someone told me to?"
@@TheChapsGuide I have no doubt your search was long and fruitful. My concern is that when you said you are at the end of your faith journey it sounds like your search has ended-as if you have "arrived." Can we really say where we will be in 5-10 years from now? I recall a time when I believed I arrived at my faith destination--then covid hit and other life events happened. My faith journey has taken me places I never thought I would be. Please stay open and curious.
The best path everyone should show the younger generation(s) to follow: Learn to think for yourself! Show them how to evaluate what others say and to "look behind the curtain" of why, where, when, and to whom they said whatever they said.
Yes. The only real mistake is the one from which you learn nothing.
Man has problem with organised religion but l regularly extols the virtues of the British Royal family, the head of which is also the head of the Church of England, an 'organised religion'. OK.
I don't think he has a problem with organised religion, he may even be part of one himself. I think Ash was trying to explain how many people will follow without thinking it through rationally. People may also leave organised religion, but for emotional or irrational reasons, only to then adopt some vain novelty of an ideology, bringing us back to the same problem.
I do not have a problem with organised religion, I merely put forward the suggestion that people who follow an organised religion, should do so based on research, experience and knowledge - not merely based upon the fact that they were told to believe something, by a figure of influence in their earlier life.
In other words, do you believe in God because your parents told you to hold such a belief, or is it because you embarked upon a faith journey, researching what your belief is based around, understanding what that belief structure entails, and even exploring alternative faiths to see if they may appeal to you more than others?
I assume your somewhat barbed comment is comment is due to the fact that you are an adherent of an organised religion and that you simply followed your family and believed their doctrine without much thought? - Perhaps try to see it from the eyes of someone outside your group of followers - examine your soul and ask yourself the questions I have mentioned in the video.
A closed mind is a mind that cannot grow.
Also, I do not believe that a hereditary monarchy is a good system of government, nor does it ensure that the best people are in the right place at the right time. What I have stated in the past, is that the constitutional monarchy espoused by the Commonwealth of Nations for the last 1000 years, seems to have worked well despite these faults (so far). Having a head of state that is non-political and solely focused on the 'health' of the nation has been beneficial - it is undoubtedly terrible for the family concerned, who essentially sacrifice their lives for ours, but it seems to work.
As an aside - if you are a believer in a supernatural deity that rules the universe (God), you will understand that our monarch rules by divine right and was selected by 'God' for this task and hence holds the title "Defender of the Faith'. As I say, if you believe in such superstitions.
