I carry a Swiss army knife with me for 7 or 8 years now. My wife used to make jokes about it. ("Your MacGyver"). Until the time we needed a can-opener, scissors and tweezers during our stay in the middle of nowhere in Thailand. Now she has two Swiss Army knives herself.

@@Olyfrun I don't know the other ones, but I agree re the HOGG's of Fife. They have a padded one for roughly 90 GBP, and their top of the range sells at 160 GBP. But I like best their cheap one, the "Woodsman". This goes for only 65 GBP and is a real bargain.

"I look forward to the Autumn every year when I can pull my Barbour out of storage". These could have been exactly my words 🙂 I basically put on my Beaufort in something like mid-October and reluctanctly put it off in April, when here in Italy the temperatures start ramping towards the tropical extremes we had to endure in the last decades. On a side note, let me state that I have always been fascinated by the British countryside and your assistants in this video have won me even more.

What a hard list to make. For me, its my trusty old Navy Blazer (It was pretty much the first item I bought about 13 years ago when I decided to dress a bit smarter, Looked about on Ebay, not really knowing what I am doing and spotted a Gieves & Hawkes fine wool 2 button Navy Blazer/Sports Jacket going for £15 that no one was bidding on, I put a bid in, won it a few days later and when it arrived, it was like new, it fit perfectly, on the shoulders, arm length, around the middle. The guy that sold it must have had the same body shape as me to the inch and at £15, a pretty good bargain, to date, its the best fitting jacket I own, including a tailored suit. Its my go to jacket when things get smart casual (That I usually pair with a blue shirt, dress jeans/chinos, brogues and a dive watch.
I have a pair of Crockett and Jones Islay Brown Brogue Boots (Skyfall Boots), same as the blazer, my goto item when things get smart casual, no other shoe gets a look in.
Again, another item from about 13 years ago when I decided to smarted up my appearance, I bought the GoldenEye (Anther Bond Inspired purchase) Omega Semaster 300 watch, but in the smaller 36mm (it feels a much bigger watch on the wrist). I feel its smaller size, it falls under the radar while visiting places like London, especially when paired with a Nato strap (I like the Goldfinger Nato Strap, or a brown leather one), so it pretty much has become my everyday wear, I also have a 41mm, but I feel it gets people looking a little too often and places like London, makes me a bit un easy.
My aging Mackbook Pro i7 Laptop, easily the best laptop I have ever had, pretty much goes everywhere with me.

I do feel a bit incomplete without a watch on my wrist. It compliments an outfit & boost my appearance confidence a bit. I’m happy with my orient & Victorinox but that depth master looks interesting, never heard of nivada until now but might give it a shot in the future. A Rolex or omega seems like a lifetime to reach just for a watch.

I just decided to get me the Kaweco pen as well in plastic. I have many other fountain pens, but I don’t like taking them out in case I drop them or lose them somewhere. This plastic one is just a nice cheap compact pen for every day writing but for some reason, I just can’t get into the bag. I think that’s because in America they often referred to it as a man purse and it’s derogatory. I also have Tabac products as a traditional wet shaver that uses a straight razor. And you are right. Some of their products do have a very feminine almost powdery flowery smell. And some don’t. I don’t know why that is.

The Nivada Grenchen watch brand is new to me. The "Spider" series (Antarctic Spider) look fantastic and definitely on my future purchase list. I prefer the Geo. F. Trumper Sandalwood Cologne as its citrus is more lemony than the Chanel Égoïste EDT and seems fine for year-round use. I'll need to check out the Dunhill Edition. How safe are the waxed jackets when worn sitting in car seats and furniture? Wouldn't they shed some dried wax onto the seats? I worry about Australian oilskin dusters leaving an oil stain on carseats as well even though it is not on your list.

Good video. My daily array is much the same. The strap on your messenger bag might benefit from some brown shoe cream. There is a new fountain pen company, Ellington Pens, that I really like. Their pens are British designed, US made. Beautiful, sturdy, work well. And the cost is modest for such a pen, US$45. I have five in different colors to indicate the color of the ink within (black, brown, red, purple, blue and turquoise). Fun. And when you send a handwritten note to someone, they frequently notice that you have used a fountain pen. A bit of elegance and care.

Now that's a superbly interesting topic since I also feel that my necessities of life are in a constant evolutionary process.
Things I would never have considered needing a decade ago are now a fixture in my life.
While technically living in a rural setting I'm within sights of Frankfurt's towers and have spent essentially all my studying and work-life in an urban setting so my preferences might differ a bit, as in exchanging an useful informal clothing item like the chore jacket for autumn with a corduroy sports coat or once the autumn progresses with my trusty Burberry Trench-Coat replacing the Barbour Jacket. Essentially the "useful" factor slightly decreases for the "dressy" factor while I feel maintaining at least a semblance of the "useful".
Same goes for the bag - in place of the utility bag I lob around a bag that's somewhere between a teacher's bag and an attaché case.
Pens - once again similarities => the KaWeCo Sport is a really nice pen, but I prefer my Pelikan M800 and Montblanc 146... "dressy" pens if you will... I also didn't buy the Montblanc new, both companies are.. quite substantially expensive but MB is kind of the king of making you pay for it's logo...
"[...] not like the fancy ones with Damascus steel [...]" ...😅 of course I have one of "those"... folded layered steel (i.e. "Damascus" except not, we don't *actually* know what went into true Damascus steel...blablabla, I'm a "swords person" to a degree🙃), bone handles, brass fittings and short enough to be a legal carry item in Germany... less useful, more fancy...
As for shaving I'd have to say I'm addicted to "Mühle" blades for my safety razor, I've had a ton of other blades but they either loose cutting capacity to fast or are *really way too sharp* - hello "Feather". That would be my shaving consideration since I feel that, while I love it, the safety razor itself is essentially completely exchangeable and shaving soap wise I'm still vacillating between several and have yet to come to a conclusion.
But honestly I wouldn't make such a list because it would have a disturbing amount of medical supplies and necessities if I am completely honest.🤣
"Well now that is a very small drop, in a very, very large bucket of drugs."
    - Cooper Howard
Also: I really like the fact that horses are apparently just really large herbivorous cats in their ability to photobomb.😹
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz

I like Dunhill Edition, but I personally prefer Moustache EDT by Rochas. It’s the same general style of scent - a citrus woody chypre - but it’s heavier and longer lasting, the mid notes are patchouli and vetiver, with a base of civet. And it’s cheap enough to do as a blind buy. If you haven’t tried it please do. You can thank me later.

Over the years I’ve struggled with ink flow drying up between uses in my fountain pens, but not a problem with the Kaweco, and I am delighted with how it writes even as a left handed writer. I highly recommend Kaweco’s mixed color ink cartridge pack as each new cartridge is an exciting surprise!

For me, items fall into two categories: those I can’t actually live without and those I pretend I can’t live without. For the first category it’s the iPhone - life is so dependent on apps for banking, messaging etc that it’s essential. For the second category it’s: a nice watch (doesn’t really matter which one as long as you like it); a proper camera and a computer to process the photos you take on the camera; a nice hi-fi as music through wireless headphones really isn’t as good. I can’t think of anything else. I don’t have a sense of smell thanks to an accident in a chemistry lab many years ago so scent is irrelevant. I used to have a Barbour Beaufort but bought it as a teenager and outgrew it. These days I wear gore-tex walking jackets which are much better hiking up the fells than the Barbour ever was.

(If the name is not emblazoned on it anywhere, I would drop my objection.) A bag with a similar aesthetic, also made in the U.S. (Duluth, Minnesota), can be had from Duluth Pack. They make a variety of bags, briefcases, portfolios, backpacks, etc. They look great and are of high quality. I get asked about my bag all the time.

Enjoyed that video. Great recommendations on TABAC, Kaweco and Barbour. However, I can't agree with your argument against ROLEX. The Submariner is a worry free watch everywhere you go - esp. on the beach. And it looks modest enough to not attract thugs, like maybe a gold watch would.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  Месяц назад +4

I'm afraid I now find the whole Rolex brand to be somewhat toxic. The galloping overexposure and mass ownership in the many millions, now make it a tawdry item for me, I can no longer find any joy in wearing my own Rolex pieces and I'm afraid all but the DJ are likely to go in favour of more refined units. But each to their own, the Sub is a great watch, just vastly overpriced and not really anything special.

@@TheChapsGuideI fully agree with you, and honestly a public figure taking this stance is a great thing IMO. As ever, many thanks.
On that note, what a beautiful piece you've chosen to replace it. Depthmaster is not my usual style, but wow that is a real treat.

I just feel if you have that money to spend Rolex is a very dull and unimaginative choice. If you know anything about watches...so many more interesting options. Most people that wear an interesting watch have a story to go with it. When you see a person wearing a Rolex you usually get two options - "Yeah it's a rolex, it's what you get when you make some money!" or "Well I don't know much about watches. I got this as a gift for my birthday/service, amazing as it's never needed a new battery!" Oh well.

@@TheChapsGuide I feel the same. Whenever I hear someone say that in order to buy a Rolex one "has to build a relationship with the AD" and then wait for the call is rediculous in my opinion. I rather buy from a company that makes one feel welcome. Even if you enter their boutique for the first time.

@@MrPleerswell, then don’t purchase from an AD… I got my DJ from a reputable so called grey market watch dealer. No issues whatsoever.

Hi Ash. I was looking for the Dunhill fragrance. But can't find anything at the price you mentioned on the Dunhill site or amazon.

I'm looking for a carry bag like that. The Barbour ones seem to be virtually black. I don't have a car, so want something lightweight that won't distort the shoulders on a suit or jacket. The main things I want to carry are a fold-away brolly, notebook and plastic bags. Does anyone know any good brands?

you are allowed to carry a knife in the UK? I have a briefcase as to the fact that as I grow older, I dislike having anything in my pockets.

Ash , what's your opinion on the new veggie based Mitchell's Wool Fat shaving soap ? I actually find it better than the tallow version one.
I also can't live without the Apple Airpods and I'm an Android guy !

I can respect everything but the Kaweco...they're such trash. I can even understand the airpods because some people find meaning in being members of cults. But, there are sooooooo many affordable quality writing instruments out there that give excellent experience. You don't have to live like this, Sir.

    No Glock? 😵
Locking pen knife blades are banned coz they're more lethal coz they're safer?
No problem. I'd choose the British legal 3 meter long Narwahl Tusk in an ostrich leather scabbard.🎉😂
