Great advice! I once drove 4 hours to Washington, DC (USA) for a 3 day trip to meet up with a lady friend. The plans changed and I ended up spending the trip alone. It was tough but I went to the museums and dinner by myself, just me and my DSLR. It ended up being a very rewarding trip and I’m glad I followed through with it.

Such important advice Ash, I fell into a very bad place after my dear mother died. If you do not take proper care of your physical and mental health nothing else will matter. Cheers, my friend.

I couldn't agree more Ash. I recently had second thoughts about travelling to London to attend the Leap Day gathering. My partner encouraged me to go. It did me the world of good, meeting like minded chaps and having an enjoyable evening, then a night in a hotel & the following day visiting photography exhibitions & then to Camden Market before travelling home. It really helped my mental health, I had a thoroughly enjoyable time. I am a firm believer in the value of a little time to myself. All the best Sir & thanks again.

I sometimes surprise myself with new stuff, often outside my comfort zone.
I try to do new things, learn new skills and just try to be a better version of myself.
My Easter vacation started few days ago, I had booked a hotel from a city just one hour drive away.
On the first evening I attended a social dance, blues dancing on a dance studio.
Next day there was a blues dance workshop so that too.
I don't need people around me but nevertheless I enjoyed myself.
And I got a chance to dress up. 😁
You really don't train your core muscles in the gym so my health has gotten better since I started dancing.
My girlfriend absolutely loves that I can dance. 😉

Every three months or so I go on a solo road trip. I go with my wife’s blessing. She says I come back much more sane and rational. I’m only away 3 or 4 days, but I find the time refreshing and rejuvenating.

My tip for self-help would be "delay your breakfast".
Having been of the never-go-to-work-on-an-empty-stomach brigade for the last forty-plus years, I came across the "Circadian" rhythm about a year ago and thus now breakfast at work at 9.30am, four hours after waking.
Never thought I would manage as I cycle the best part of an hour to work.
Lost a couple of kilos very quickly and feel fit as a fiddle!

That's (not unexpectedly) very sound advice - I usually toxically fail at self care since I'm much too busy caring about my body... and not in a "fitness" sense, more in the "planing medication supplies" or "taking care I have whatever I need in the coming days/weeks/months" and I've, actually fairly recently, come to the conclusion that I need to relax a bit, I *do* have a sufficient supply on hand as well as routines in place.
I way too often have applied the "reward myself" idea in a compensation way, to balance out annoyances and over the last years I've come to the conclusion that it does not and will never actually work, an insufficient and superficial attempt you'd might say.
The positive thing is that I've started to get rid of toxic behavioural patterns and this little collection of advice works actually surprisingly well at keeping me on the tracks in just the right moment - thanks!
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz

Great video Ash. I passed fifty nearly twenty years ago and began to take much more care of myself. Because I attend my GP a few times a year I discovered diabetes at an early stage and was able to control it. Likewise with prostate cancer at an early stage which is now completely gone. You are so right to emphasise mens health as a priority as one gets older. BTW, I also believe a few hours alone several times a week helps the psychological element of a mans life too. PS I don't watch much television, but I do make it a point to have a favourite programme. Mine's the original Antiques Roadshow. You never know what gem is going to appear to stir one's aesthetic. ❤

My tuppenceworth: get a dog. Aside from the fun of owning a dog, I walk mine for the same three and a half mile route everyday, come rain or shine. That is good exercise and also a lot of time to reflect and think or to listen to a podcast or an audiobook. Also if the mood takes you, you can go and have a pint in the pub without any awkwardness. Sitting on your own with your dog is perfectly acceptable. And if you were a single man (I'm not), it is a great way to get chatting to women.

Spot on! In the US, the number one reason medical doctors leave their profession is burnout. And the same is true for ministers. Burnout. No self care. I am going up to Maryland (from Virginia) to a retreat center in early May for five days of meditation and alone time. And I have alone time every day for an hour or so. Great advice!

Self care is essential for all men, but I'd say it's crucially important for anyone working with the public in fields such as teaching, nursing, social work, or your chosen field of police work, Ash. -When you're called upon to give a great deal of yourself to others every day, there's no quicker route to being burned out and incapable of helping anyone than to neglect personal self care.
A lot of men neglect their physical health, especially in mid-life, and this can have dire consequences for both longevity and quality of life. -As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
