It's not just the actual holiday or break that's good for our mental health. It's also the anticipation and knowing that you've got one coming up that's beneficial, too.

I love to travel and regret that I can’t afford to do it much more often. Experiencing different cultures is healthy for one’s life outlook.
I’ve always said that one of the best parts of a vacation is coming home. Being abroad, even to somewhere fabulous, makes me appreciate what I have here.

Excellent discussion, Ash, of the health benefits that accrue from taking a holiday from the stresses of daily work life.
And I agree completely that nothing broadens the mind and enriches our perspectives on different cultures like travel.
If at all possible, I would advise anyone taking a holiday to leave the laptop at home, and the cell phone as well. (I've seen people sitting on a beach working on their computing devices and thought to myself, "You might as well be sitting in an office building under the warm glow of florescent lighting."
Also, I encourage anyone taking a holiday to travel light. -Nothing ruins my mood like standing around at airport baggage terminals or feeling like a sherpa or a military recruit carrying half of what I own on my back.

I see a generational shift here. I noticed a lot of folks in their 50s and 60s do not prioritize holiday and travel, while my Gen, 20s and 30s, do prioritize “experiences.”

As a care worker from the Low Countries, I find solitude and solace on long hikes in the Scottish Highlands. I've crossed them south to north and east to west on foot. Slept in my trusted tent, hostels and bothies.
The dreich Shangri La of the North offers me a fresh perspective on my work and relationships that is inspiring and invigorating. It helps me keep perspective and sanity in daily life.
    As John Muir said:
    "Wildness is a necessity".

Great points there Ash, especially the benefits before and after - the research, planning, the experience, and the memories.
I still feel the benefit when I enthuse and think about my time on holiday and discovering a new location. It also helps give me a nudge in my normal work/home life to keep me motivated to earn the next break and save to fund it. Just thinking of my holiday in Puglia, Italy last year after completing an intensive consulrancy assignment project, puts a smile on my face several months later.

Ash. Travel lets you see other cultures and see new and exciting things. We used to go camping every year on a lake in Kentucky in an isolated cove. Dovie and I have traveled to Canada England Scotland and Ireland. I have also visited Mexico. I have also been to 24 of these 50 United States. My Bucket list is Vienna Prague Florence Barcelona and Munich. Life is sacrifice we sacrifice our early life so that we can live better in our old age. But we need to manage that sacrifice to enrich our lives and grow as gentlemen. Thus giving us knowledge and best of all memories to look back upon in our dotage. Very best regards Ron

Totally agree Ash. Travel deepens one's knowledge and breadth of experience. Two top tips from me: book to reframe stress in the modern world "Notes on Nervous Planet" by Matt Haig. Secondly, try and keep a written holiday diary, even if just bullet points. Far better than just photos to remember specifics of the holiday which photos cannot capture.

Another great video, Ash. As you described the effect your Thailand trekking trip had on you, I was reminded of my month trekking trip around the wilds of northern Madagascar back in 2008 where myself and the 5 other members of the expedition had to carry everything we needed on our backs, never slept in the same place for more than two nights and had to fill our water bottles from streams and rivers, some of which we found bone dry at the end of a day's trek. Amazing experience - night after night around a campfire under either a canopy of billions of stars or of trees alive with lemurs. I remember arriving back in to Diego Suarez at the end of the trip and marvelling at the fact that I could get clean water simply by turning a tap! Like yourself I also lost about a stone in weight. I've not been abroad since the pandemic (entirely my own fault) but this is a timely video as I dug my passport out the other day and am now gearing up to plan a trip. Over the last few years, especially since the pandemic, I've mistakenly spent most of my disposable income filling my shelves with material stuff that hasn't done much for me and that I am now in the process of selling; I think your video here hits the nail on the head that travel is something to prioritize with your spare money.

Going to a foreign country is really eye opening. Americans like to travel within their country because so geographically diverse. But a lot don’t care about foreign country travel. Not sure why. Fear of unknown?

Good points Ash. My holidays have almost always considered of track and trail walking lasting anything between five days and two weeks. During these walks I realised the importance of pilgrimage in Medieval times.
These days walking may have less to do with religion, but even so, I usually experience a frisson of spiritual satisfaction. I don't think one can overemphasise the importance of renewal and regeneration one can get from separation from everyday life and returning to the familiar refreshed.

Same here. Solace in active solitude. For me often to be found in the Scottish Highlands. Day hikes and longer trails on the mainland and the isles. And then to return to the Netherlands, home and work (a care home with people suffering from dementia) recharged physically and mentally.

@@hendrikjanriesebos1293 I appreciate the çomment. I recommend two books. (1) The Philosophy of Walking by Frédéric Gros and The Old Ways by Robert MacFarlane. Despite the lofty titles, they are simple stories about the benefits of walking and reconnecting.

i think thats only one perspective. Wife and I prioritized career, salary and mass accumulation of wealth for many years. Moved country 3 times for career moves. Now at 68 we are multi millionaires. Retirement is sweet. As younger people we met plenty who spent big $ on travel. We held back. Now Im so glad we did. Retirement is sweet.
