Andrew McCarthy (Pretty in Pink, Weekend at Bernie’s) joins us this week to talk all about his New York Times Best Selling book “Walking with Sam” and how he’s learned from tumultuous experiences with his own family how important it is to have honest, adult relationships with his children. Andrew goes on to talk about his relationship with the Brat Pack, how the association negatively impacted his career, and what it’s been like reuniting with its members. We also talk about his opinion directing TV, being a cultural touchstone for a generation of people, and his fondness for Weekend at Bernie’s.

How ANDREW MCCARTHY Reacts to WEEKEND AT BERNIES When it Comes on TV #insideofyou #weekendatbernies Развлечения
I work on film/tv productions in nyc. Andrew McCarthy rules as a director, you work for him you’re done in under 12 hours, openly says “we’re not winning an Oscar here”. No bullshit, no ego, such a legit dude.
He looks like a nice guy
He had an amazing run in the 80's - Class, St. Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink, Mannequin, Less than Zero, Weekend at Bernie's...
Right, not many actors can say that!
I will say the 80s really pushed Jonathan Silverman hard
At 43 years old my brother and I still quote Weekend at Bernies more than any other film. Top three favorite comedies of all time.
Yes, this movie makes me laugh the hardest but I love Office Space and Idle Hands as well. I need to buy Office Space. Shallow Hal is one of the funniest on my list as well.
My sister and I always say, "That's illegal! What you are doing is illegal." whenever we see or hear something that we highly disagree with... like seeing pineapple on being put on pizza.
“All I’m saying is, why don’t we pretend he didn’t die? JUST FOR A BIT!”
“How do you like that? He gets laid more dead than I do alive.”
“He made a damn good float though, huh?”😆
Weekend At Bernies is one of the most brilliant high concept comedies in movie history, and Andrew's character Larry is one of the most interesting comedic characters in movie history. He's clearly a psychopath, but he's presented as comic relief. Just brilliant.
“Weekend at Bernie’s” is an all-time classic film. Be proud, Andrew. Be proud.
I never laughed so hard in a movie until I saw Weekend At Bernie's. Terry Kiser was hilarious, how could he ever keep a straight face during the shoots. And who could ever forget the classic line "Hi Tawny, I'm Horny" spoken by Andrew McCarthy himself.
Hearing McCarthy having love for weekend at Bernies makes me happy. I love that film and he made that film what it was. Still funny
Me too! I'm so happy to hear him say this. I have no idea why I love this movie or why it still holds up, but I think it's mainly McCarthy's performance and the tight, fast-paced script do most of the heavy lifting. The jokes aren't even very good but he sells them so well. I don't think the boating scene is 100% needed but other than that, not a wasted scene.
My husband and I watched‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ a couple weeks ago. We still laugh our asses off…. Such a great comedy, and all who starred in it should be so proud!
I'm so happy to hear Andrew is proud of "Bernie's". I was first shown a clip from it in high school and laughed like crazy. After that, I tracked it down as fast as I could. One of my favourite comedies. They don't make them like that anymore!
Man, he aged well.
Yep! He’s still beautiful
Barely aged at all.
Low stress and no surgeries.
Not a single person at that time didn’t la😂laugh at it!
It's how you should look if you live a clean life during your youth. And stay away from plastic surgeries.
I’m younger, just under 40, but watched weekend at Bernie’s over a decade ago? for the first time. It’s the movie that makes me laugh the most. I watched it a couple of years ago at my mother’s house and tried not to wake her up laughing. Tickled me like crazy! I just bought it on blu-ray and watched it again. I almost died laughing. I love when that guy says, ‘That’s illegal’ with all that crazy boat stuff going on! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was thinking that there’s a whole lotta illegal stuff going on that weekend!
Andrew, I gotta tell ya that "Man in Motion" is STILL a powerful message to someone fighting his or her way through life. When it comes on the radio, I turn it way up and sing it loud. And when the theme song comes on, I still cry. It reminds me of youth gone by, and the happier days of my life with the family and friends that I knew.
I absolutely ADORE Weekend at Bernie's!!! I've seen that film so many times since it was new that I've actually memorized the dialog lol. It makes me so happy to know that Andrew McCarthy loves it, too!
I watched weekend at Bernie's so much as a kid, such a classic! I need to watch it again soon
I don't think there has been a year that's gone by that I haven't rewatched Weekend at Bernies. Love it. Recently discovered McCarthy's early film Class. Pretty good and lots of cool early roles by others in that.
I'm actually watching Weekend at Bernies right now on AMC as I'm typing this lol.
"He's got nice form". One of the best delivered comedy lines ever.
Big fan of Mannequin since I saw it in the cinema back in the days. Starship's song is a classic. Period! 😁🤘
Growing up my family spent almost every weekend at a little farmhouse my grandparents owned. We had a tiny TV with a built in VCR and a small selection of tapes. We would have bonfires until late and then everyone would go inside and watch movies until we fell asleep. Weekend At Bernies was our movie of choice 90% of the time. To this day when I watch it, even if I'm alone, I have this comforting feeling like I'm surrounded by family.
This is fun listening to you guys talk. Andrew McCarthy has always been so relatable. Weekend at Bernie's and Mannequin are two of my favorite movies.
Weekend at Bernie’s was the funniest movie of all time for me. I laughed until it hurt when they were dragging Bernie behind the boat. I’m laughing now as I write.😂
Mannequin has one of my favorite movie jokes:
Old lady: "Look at him with the dummy!"
Old man: "Who are you to criticize?!"
Less than Zero was awesome!
Reciting his lines from Weekend At Bernie's. OMG, that's golden!! 🤣👍
Andrew you are one of the few people that basically edge into every 40s to 50 year old memory of the 80s ...i even had a friend that thought you were in weird science.
the hotel story is great - so heart felt
Isn't it funny that the term "weekend at Bernie's" is used when describing soooo many situations. Love, Love, Love Andrew McCarthy.
Man In Motion gets me pumped. That's like a work out song.
Forget what the critic said, weekend at Bernie's was a classic film. It was freaking hilarious, the screen chemistry with Jonathan Silverman was great, I laughed the entire film and I think I could speak for a lot of people
Weekend at Bernie's is a truly underrated cinematic masterpiece.
So glad to see him on here. Always been a huge fan
His autobiography, Brat, is well worth the read. Highly recommend.
I love Weekend at Bernies. Such an original idea and I think movies or TV shows that put a regular person/people in progressively more outrageous situations are by far some of the most laugh out loud funniest. Both Andrew and Jonathan were great in those types of roles and I would say this was the pinnacle for both of them. The movie may not have gotten any awards but it has become a pop culture icon that is referenced in other movies and TV shows which to me, is even higher praise.
Great hearing actor talk bout his movies and how he feels listening to songs years after he heard them in his movies such a truthfull and top actor mccarthy always reminds me of my childhood films or music of the 80s best times of my life
Absolutely enjoy Weekend at Bernies
"Less Than Zero" is a near masterpiece.
Sometimes on a film shoot when they are forced to make things up as they go along, the magic happens. "buy the book" filmmaking typically produces boring results.
I can understand why Andrew didn't like the experience of making Less Than Zero. That being said, the film still turned out to be great in my opinion. It also has one of the best, most haunting scores I can think of by Thomas Newman.
This man was my first celebrity crush when I was a young teenager and saw Pretty in Pink❤️ loved him in Weekend at Bernie’s ! He just seems so genuine and kind
I had a crush on Andrew since Mannequin!! LOL :)
He should be proud of “Weekend at Bernie’s”. That’s a hilarious movie
I met Jonathan 10 yrs ago... seriously one of the nicest guys I have ever met
Hey Ladiesssss!!!! When he rigged Bernie's arm up to wave and then hits him with that flyswatter, classic lol
I love the mannequin song. That movie was always playing on cable.
Andrew was such a heartthrob! Everywhere he went - he was mobbed by friends and fans.
Now all I can think about is the sound of the bells going "Ding" every time Bernie hit a buoy. Now I have to go watch that scene. Thank you!
thts mainly wat i know him from bernies. i never got into the pretty in pink stuff but bernies was my movie still is . his giant socks he wore 😂
I was IN LOVE with Andrew McCarthy back in the day.
I’m glad he likes Weekend At Bernie’s it’s a stupid little comedy but I still love it! They just don’t make screwball comedies like that anymore!
Those stupid little comedies or comfort moments as in life are the things that truly connect and stick with people!
Horrible Bosses. Weird: the Weird Al Yancovic story, Jungle Cruise.
Love Mannequin and the song. It shall live with me forever. Thank you.
Mannequin!!!! Was a great, fun movie!!
The world NEEDS a Weekend at Bernie's III.
We’ve got one
@@michaelwills1926 ???
_Legend has it that..._
_Bernie still have,_
_...Great Weekends !_
Part of the movie was shot on the island of St.croix USVI when I was living there. They also used a very popular song on the island at the time in the movie credits Bernie..get up slowly 🎵 classic lol
Met Andrew in 1993 in St Helens Oregon when he was filming (Things I never told you). Still have his autograph from that day.
Weekend at bernies is so funny. My favorite movie as a kid in the 80s
Funny that he talks about weekend at Bernies while behind him his a Jason Voorhees hockey mask as Terry Kiser who played Bernie was in Friday The 13th Part 7 and gets sawed in half
Man In Motion is easily one of the greatest songs of the 80s and yet you would never associate with a melodrama like St Elmo's Fire, as feels like it was written for a Cruise or Stallone vehicle
That song hits hard now with the lyrics. “growing up, you don’t see the writing on the wall” Boy oh boy what a fact
I love that McCarthy loves Weekend at Bernie's.
Less Than 0 looked like a hard movie to shoot.. but the finished product was fantastic 🎱
less than zero was one of the best movies ever, life imitates art.
I'll never forget that boat chase scene in Weekend at Bernie's, where they jump on an arriving ferry thinking it's leaving. then they steal a boat but they have no idea what the channel markers mean, so they weave in and out of them "SERPENTINE!" *ding*
Weekend at Bernies is so absurd that the comedy works in a bizarre way. It is carried very well by Silverman and McCarthy that it is an instant classic.
I love both films. Yes even part 2. Love the Bernie dance.
I always enjoyed Mannequin. Kind of a guilty pleasure for me.
Less than Zero is an extremely complex and yet great story/ movie.
Weekend at Bernies is hilarious. Its funny sometimes when you see an actor basically hating everything you grew up loving. It really puts into perspective how great of an actor someone is, when they sell you something, they themselves don't even like or even look back on with fond memories, while you bought it, hook, line and sinker and do look back on with happiness.
Such a great movie. He always seemed cool! Still does!
Andrew McCarthy is a class act.
Ah nice to see Andrew Mcarthy! Weekend at Bernie’s was a brilliant film 😂😎
Whenever I hear Weekend at Barnies I remember it is Rachel Green's favorite movie.
I watched it on HBO when it first aired and caught it nonstop afterwards.I just watched it a few days ago on my external HD.
I loved Weekend at Bernies. I even loved the sequel.
Andrew McCarthy played Weekend at Bernie’s to perfection. He was hilarious. He even got to play out his native New Yorker accent without having to mask it. I bet that’s why he loves it most. He just seemed to be having a blast as his character.
That was certainly the opposite of what I expected!
Great movie Bernie’s character Alive was as hilarious as he was dead. It was hilarious
I get yelled at when I just lay there
"I don't understand why he couldn't have waited until Monday to kill himself." 😂
Love Weekend at Bernie's since I was a kid.
Love weekend at Bernies, and even the sequel might be even better. The whole Mobu with the pigeon and the music kills me every time!
Hear me out: RDJ as Bernie Lomax in a prequel to Weekend at Bernie’s. It will print money.
Weekend at Bernie’s is the best
Weekend at Bernie's -hilarious!
Still a huge fan ….. read the book Brat. Loved it
The guys on the 709 Meridian channel have funny commentaries for both movies on their channel.
I love weekend at Bernie’s soooo much
My friends and I went to a Welsh speaking school and occasionally would get sent out of the classroom by the teacher for speaking English and what we were actually doing was quoting lines to each other from Weekend at Bernies.
I will and forever be a supporter of silly comedies as long as the actors take it seriously and commit and the whole cast definitely did
Andrew should be proud of it, probably not the sequel though 😂
I'd love to see a Weekend At Bernie's III someday!
Weekend and Less than zero are his best movies.
Funny thing is Weekend will still be hilarious and enjoyed 100 years from now! Brilliant in its stupidity!
The song from Mannequin was my mom's wedding song
I got a lot of love for weekend at Bernie’s 1&2
This was outstanding...
Weekend at Bernies omg soo dang funny!!!!!
Pretty in Pink is the best soundtrack to come out of the 80s.
♥ weekend at Bernies.
Sounds like someone tried to smoke it past the wrong guy!
No smoking.
Weekend at Bernies is a classic
Pro tip: all actors use the word "sweet" when referring to another actor they like.
Now that explains the sequel
The guy sitting next to Andrew looks like he'd ratherbe sailing.
Andrew is wrong about LESS THAN ZERO. Even though it's so different from the book, it's still a fantastic movie and in my top 5 of all time. He should be very PROUD of that movie and the unforgettable inprint that film made on my and many others lives. To me, it was successful. If not, I wouldn't give a damn about it. It's a yearly ritual in December to watch it. What the studio needs to do is release all the original footage on deleted scenes in an upcoming re-release of the film on Blu-Ray. We deserve to see ALL the cut footage as well. To me, my favorite Andrew film is Less Than Zero. Andrew may have bad memories of that film and the experience of it all, but I just think it's just a great, emotional film of dramatic weight. From the cast to the score by Thomas Newman, it's just perfect.
I love Weekend at Bernie’s, Mannequin, and Pretty in Pink!!! I don’t care for St Elmos or Zero. wish he wouldda done more stuff
80s teen movies were the best.
