Legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne died in the crash of TWA Flight 599 on March 31, 1931. The plane was a Fokker F.10 Trimotor. Unknown to the airline, moisture had seeped into the structure of one of the airplane’s wings, and had begun to weaken the glue that held the wing spars together.

The first crash that comes to me was the crash in Oct 1977 of The Lynyrd Skynyrd band. Lead singer Ronnie van Zant, and brother sister Steve & Cassie Gains were killed along with the pilots. The rest of the band was badly injured.
That was so tragic. I had just purchased their new album 'Street Survivors' with the group standing in flames the day before they crashed and the day after the crash record stores were pulling them from the shelves. It was devistating because we had seen them play in April of that same year. It was one hellva show. It would be the last time I saw Ronnie sing. It was so sad to hear he and the Gains siblings had died. It hit everybody hard.
I always thought it was so prophetic the line in "Freebird". I'm sure he sang it at the concert the night the crash happened: "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me? I must be passing on now, cause there's too many places I've got to see........Cause I'm as free as a bird now, and this bird you cannot change."
I was the first person at my boarding school to hear of Jim Croce's passing. Everybody at the school was a fan, and it was the deepest grief many of us had ever known.
Like many others, please add New York Yankees captain, Thurman Munson to your list of MLB players. He passed on August 2nd, 1979 while doing touch & go’s at the airport in Green, Ohio. But the absolute most famous of all, Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynard lost 6 members on October 20th, 1977. RIP to all who have passed while flying.
I kept expecting to see Carole Lombard, wife of Clark Gable, on this list. Her plane crashed into Mt. Ptosi, right outside of Las Vegas, on its approach to the Las Vegas airport, on January 16, 1942. She had been off on a war bond tour and her plane was going to stop over in Las Vegas for refueling. Sadly, she never made it home to California.
Patsy Cline is the one that saddens me the most. What a great singer!!! She had a short singing career yet she paved the way to all the women singers. A stamp was even dedicated to her three decades after her passing.

If you mentioned Jim Croce, why not his very gifted guitarist, Maury Muehleisen? After all, they died in the same crash.R.I.P. Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen.
Absolutely! Maury's artistry on his 12 string guitar was un-equaled and was what made Jim's songs so appealing! A few years after this tragedy, I taught with Maury's girlfriend Judy (last name withheld for privacy), who taught English in a high school in Phoenixville, PA. I've been to Jim's grave in Frazer, PA. Thank you for recognizing Maury.
I'm suprised nobody mentioned the former Blue Jays/Phillies MLB pitcher Roy Halladay. He was a hall of famer, 2 Cy Young awards, 8 all star games, and he threw 2 very historical no-hitters. He threw a perfect game in Miami, and in his first career postseason start, he threw the 2nd postseason no-hitter in MLB history against the Reds.
If he wasn't killed in the crash EVERYBODY would have forgotten him by about 1962... or earlier. He was NOT the big star that he's been made out to be... for that matter neither was Richie Valens. The myth has outdone the reality.
It's always very sad when someone passes by way of an accident. Since most people never meet celebrities, I remember feeling sad, but life went on. The only exception to this was the day I found out that Jim Croce died. His music meant so much to me. I don't know whether or not it was appropriate, but I had "Time in a Bottle" played at my mother's funeral and "Photographs and Memories" played at my only sister's funeral. I just always felt like he had so much more to say. I'm grateful that his music was a part of my life.
Such a touching story. I agree with you completely about Jim Croce. I still have a couple of his albums and those 2 song titles that you mentioned are among my favorites as well.
Lynyrd Skynyrd should have made this list. Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gains too. They were and still are the best country rock band to every come out of the state of Alabama (correction Florida). PS- I made a error in what state they were from... So I stand corrected, they were indeed from Jacksonville Florida. Thank you all for clarifying that for me. I'm getting old and sometimes I have memory slips. But I stand by what I said about them being the best, just from the south. They made amazing music together.

The plane slowed and crashed just before final approach at Tri-Cities Regional Airport in a field off of Interstate 81 near Blountville. The National Transportation Safety Board attributed the crash to the pilot's failure to use the airplane's anti-ice system to clear ice from the engine inlet system.

Steve Fossett disappeared on September 3, 2007 while piloting a light aircraft over the Great Basin Desert, between Nevada and California. Fossett set more than one hundred records in five different sports, sixty of which still stood at the time of his death. The crash was probably caused by powerful wind gusts that forced his small plane to slam into a mountain. His sweatshirt and wallet were found 10 miles from the crash site raising speculation that he survived the initial impact or that a bear ate portions of his body.

Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, known in English as Baron von Richthofen or the Red Baron, was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories. Richthofen was shot down and killed near Vaux-sur-Somme on 21 April 1918. There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains one of the most widely known fighter pilots of all time, and has been the subject of many books, films, and other media.
Richthofen was not killed because of a crash--he was killed by anti-aircraft fire from one of several Australian anti-aircraft gunners on the ground. Additionally, despite being credited with Richthofen's death, Canadian pilot Roy Brown did not fire the round that killed Richtofen. Brown killing Richtofen was impossible given the position of the two two aircraft when Brown fired, in relation to Richthofen's fatal wound.

I thought of her as well.

Definitely should be on the list.
Carol and her mother were both killed. They were going to take the train to California because it was safer. How ironic.
The crash happened after the plane departed Las Vegas, not on its approach
Patsy Cline is the one that saddens me the most. What a great singer!!! She had a short singing career yet she paved the way to all the women singers. A stamp was even dedicated to her three decades after her passing.
J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper)- died with Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly.
Joe Kennedy Jr (JFK's brother)-died in combat in WWII in an airplane.
Ronnie Vansant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and Dean KIlpatrick (Road Manager)- Lynyrd Skynyrd- 1977 in Ms.
Otis Redding- Singer- 1967 in Wi.
Kick Kennedy also was killed in a plane crash, jfk jr.
JFK son Jr. Died in a plane crash too.
If you mentioned Jim Croce, why not his very gifted guitarist, Maury Muehleisen? After all, they died in the same crash.R.I.P. Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen.
Agreed!
So sad
You forgot the Big Bopper. He was on the flight with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. His catchphrase was Hello Baby!!!!
He would have had to say 100 celebs who....

I forsure thought Otis Reddings as well
If he wasn't killed in the crash EVERYBODY would have forgotten him by about 1962... or earlier. He was NOT the big star that he's been made out to be... for that matter neither was Richie Valens. The myth has outdone the reality.
Not my Ritchie.
A hundred percent correct.
Hate to nitpick, but Lynryd Skynyrd was from Florida not Alabama.
They have been at war with each other since then!

@@lindaf4836 John Denver should have still been alive if he had obeyed the law. He had received a couple of DUI's, and his medical certificate was denied in 1996, resulting in his pilot's license being suspended. Two days after Denver died, National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Matt Furman revealed that the musician's flying license was suspended, so he was not supposed to fly. As he was flying over Monterey Bay, California, one tank either ran dry or caused an engine failure due to fuel contamination. As Denver reached around to switch tanks, he inadvertently exceeded the recommended maximum bank angle, and put himself into a low-altitude stall/spin, crashing into the bay and killing himself on impact.
