Foam pool noodles or swim noodles are great for squeezing into spaces where you might have something slide around. For example the parchment paper could slide side to side while out cruising. I keep a few on hand as I seem to find new areas which require padding. Just cut them to length with scissors, and squeeze them into their new homes!
Does anyone else wait all week for the next video like I do? Watching it is about the best thing that happens around here all week. The only complaint is that I wish they were longer (20 minutes seems so short) and twice weekly would be even better. Oh well, I am thankful that I get to watch the show. Great video, thanks. (and now I have to wait for next Sunday).
Sail life, sailing yaba, odd life crafting, sailing parlay revival, Sampson boat Co/tally ho, wood and metal shop time (mini bulldozer), sailing wood, knottFINNishedyet (ferro refit), acorn to arabella. Thatll fill your weekend. 👍👍👍
The thrill of the hand eye connection was demonstrated by Ava’s extreme joy at making and creating. I wish they would do more of that stuff in schools right throughout until senior grad
Ava has certainly added a new dimension to the channel! She is a gem, and I see why you love her SO much Mads!!! I always look forward to seeing the both of you each week!
Lol, yes, Ava, welcome to the fun fun happy club of F’ing DIY! It’s the best way to learn new forms of profanity (bung hole, for instance!) while still ending up with something useful (like a spice rack) at the end of the process! Loved this episode and the wonderful, genuine outtakes!
Well, I absolutely loved this episode... Mads the doors are simply beautiful an brilliant. I can not wait to see the color darken on the wood .... ! An that beautiful well built spice rack....you out did yourself hon....I just loved how the bungs set off the piece..an when it darkens I'm sure it will be even more beautiful...I just thought of something...the bottom shelf you could add some wooden bars to hang the wax paper an stuff an still use the bottom shelf for more spices...who knows...?!?! I am inspired by you both an grateful for the lessons an laughs... mostly thanks for sharing your lives with us....Fare winds an following sea's ✌🏻💗😊❣️
Nice spice rack Ava. Disappointed we didn't get to see any glorious sanding, but we'll survive. The doors will make the interior much brighter when at the marina and much cozier too. Thank you both and have a great week ahead.
There are few experiences as enjoyable & satisfying as a learning curve - a wave worthy of surfing. Welcome to carpentry, a life long pursuit. Love the video.
All looking good! Iroko is much harder than teak and prone to crack, plenty of polish to finish. Eva was great, plugging, screwing and pelleting, we love it! companionway gate looks great and is a sound idea, I'm forever catching my feet! The joinery shop was a great find... Great video from both of you!
Very funny. I always learn from your videos. Thanks. Ava, nice job and glad you persevered. I hope you're having fun. You don't need to compete with Mads and his DIY projects. I enjoyed your walking tours. It would be great to learn stories about each place you visit as you travel, facts, myths, legends, whatever. I'm glad you guys are having fun.
Mads, that shot of you in front of the nav station towards the end of the video is amazing. The look of it all completed compared to when there was nothing is incredible. Watching this all come together is truly amazing. What good craftsmanship. Alan
FINALLY!!!! We have been binge "re-watching" the entire "Somewhat extensive Athena refit" and are now up to installation of the "Unobtainium 2000" gimbaled stove. I cannot remember how many times I heard Mad's say something to the affect of "sometime next year I will rebuild the companionway". Mad's, you need to encourage that girl in her wood working. There is nothing more sexy that an woman who can handle her power tools. My wife likes to get Yellow stuff for Valentines day because she prefers DeWalt.
Loving the UK developments and having Ava's humour on board too. The new hatch trim and boards/doors are going to look grand Good going Ava - you had me in hysterics with the spice rack, but the master spice rack builder did a great job (I'm sure the metric will make sense soon, hahahah :D
... 😻 ... Hi Ava and Mads. Regarding the moisture under the bed .. I did my bed so it is open at the middle front.. to allow lots of air movement .. it also gives easy access to everything.. without moving my home made futon mattress.. also the bed base is 3" wide oak slats .. 1" thick .. with edges nicely rounded and all sanded very smooth .. with an inch between for ventilation.. You could add a ducting pipe near the bow to draw the air in summer and reverse the air flow in winter to warm the area up .. I have hot water pipes that I use when it gets really cold.. Companion way door hinges could be the type with pins so they can be unhooked and stowed .. also make several different companion way boards including a thick perspex shutter.. Hope this helps.. Regards Bella and Mark.
What a work shop and what a carpentry TEAM! Very nice to see Ava’s additions to the boat. She really brings a new dynamic that is so positive. I’ve been tuning in for a while and I have to say this was one of my favorite episodes yet. Awesome!
It’s funny, I have come to enjoy out takes nearly as much as the videos. Not just on you videos but on the ones i watch in general. As it happens most of what i watch is well polished like what you do.
Well done, Ava! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I see a Sail Life cookbook in the future, too! And we learned of a new type of wood and building material. Always learning something new on this channel! Thanks, Mads! Doors look great, too!
Luv'd the outtakes of Ava. I definitely felt her angst when it comes to woodworking. Ava is fortunate to have a great mentor - Mads . Now , that Mads anointed Ava as a master spice rack builder, perhaps she can build a few more as merch ?
Very nice, well equipped workshop. It is good of James to let you use it, and even help out a bit. I am always glad to see Festool, as I am a fan and have quite a few myself. Unfortunately, my health does not allow me to use them as much as I used to.
I LOVE the spice rack! And we’re planning on making doors to go with our drop boards, as well. Everything looks so nice! You guys continue to inspire. 💕💕💕
Fantastic spice rack. Also, love the SanDisk below the desk. I use them all the time. I reformat them to NTFS with 64kb blocks to optimize the storage of lots of small files.
Goo sail life!! You guys are freaking amazing. Plugging along knocking one task out after another. And somehow keeping on schedule. Keep up great work you two!!
Gotta feel for you Ava, I’m a total noob woodworker and having a somewhat detail oriented partner could just possibly be intimidating, the spice rack looks awesome! Congrats
Mads, doors looking good. Wonder if you could have hinges that make it possible to lift the doors off? So when at sea they could be stowed and then installed when useful in marina? Just a thought
@@markbernier8434 Eagle Eye Mark. Well spotted, lift off hinges. In Australia lift off hinges are used on toilet doors to enable the door to be removed in case of a body behind them. Not sure why they don’t just have the door swing out though. Lol.
Well spotted.. My excuse.. I'm watching on mobile.. 🐱 ... I said about that type in my comment as well.. Didn't know you can get in stainless.. The trick with fitting is to have the pins on the door so you don't get hooked .. and .. grind a little bit off the top pins with all pins filed a bit like a blunt pencil .. all this makes hooking on easier.. Old speaker magnet's low down (away from compass) can hold the doors open. Put on doors and other side of fibreglass they don't rust...
I will say my boat has half hinges (lift off hinges) and they are amazing to have. On a warm day I can just remove the doors without issue, it also makes getting large items through the companionway a bit easier if needed.
Awesome Mads and of course Ava with her spiffy spice rack. Nice gesture by the guy who owns the workshop, awesome when you have the right tools for the job. You could make a small seat that sits over the bottom washboard. Great to sit on so you have a view forward under the shelter and your legs stay warm below. I made one and use it a lot. Andy UK
"The Mads & Ava Do DIY Show!" I think I could grow to really like this 'bote' show! Another few hundred episodes and I can finally decide! If I were doing my boat, I would have the doors on the inside, opening to the inside and have the hatch boards available to cover the doors and protect them on the outside. Is there room under the companionway hatch to store the hatch boards when not in use? Ava could fashion a bracket onto the bottom of the companionway hatch into which the hatch boards could attach for convenient stowage.
That was some lovely woodwork done in this episode, and I will not tell which I refer to (guess). Really awesome that you could use James workshop. Cheers.
The spyce rack looks awesome!!! If i was you i´ll find someway to protect them from hitting each other. I used to use rubber dots. They definitely help with the clinging noice on anchor. Keep up the awesome work guys, videos are awesome!
I would use stick opon felt pads on the sides of the spice jars to prevent rattling. You can still have a clean front. Felt may only have to be on one side.
Mads spent most of the video explaining the things he was going to finish next week while Ava planned, made, and got her project finished in one episode! What a fantastic job well done! 🥳. I love these finishing touches that are making such a beautiful home. Bless you both, and I hope you’re enjoying your time in the U.K. 🥰
For future projects in wood if you have to put screws in near the edge then use a grinder to grind off the tip of the screws leaving them flat at the bottom and then screw them in. That helps prevent the wood from splitting. I leaned that from my dad.
I'd sand and oil the new wood. It makes it more resistant to water and depending on the oil you're using, it will also darken the wood somewhat, bringing it closer to Teak.
@@Tomm9y I'm not sure what's better. I'm also just a DIYer, nowhere near Mads' level, but I built myself some furniture before - every piece turns out better than the last one. The last was the base for my bed, with bedstands attached. Oiling was recommended to me, with a wood that turned out very similar to what Mads is using for countertops. I'm having a bit of trouble translating it, though... Google translate says, acacia wood. I'm planning to build a large writing desk, with a shelf integrated in the coming year. I'm planning to epoxy/varnish that, but I'm still unsure what resin (brand/type) to use. :-)
That line where you said " if that wood hears it's raining in another country, it swells", something like that, frigging hilarious!!
Bless Her...LOL so cute!
The outtakes at the end were the most romantic thing I have seen yet on your channel. It actually made this old guy tear up. Great job!

And travels with Geordie. All great channels, Sail life has a flare of its own though lol. 😆👍
And "ship happens" all my favourites anyway 👍
11:09 "Oh, I assure you, it is..." Had me laughing all by myself in a very quiet house 🤣🤣🤣
Ava, you are hilarious. Your interaction with the 'master' is so super fun and although you run yourself down, the spice rack is brilliant!!!
Ava you are a real star we love the humour, a great build of the spice, spice baby!
The thrill of the hand eye connection was demonstrated by Ava’s extreme joy at making and creating. I wish they would do more of that stuff in schools right throughout until senior grad
Beautiful job Ava, you should be very proud of your work. It is a fine thing! Brave also putting yourself out there doing it on camera!
Ava has certainly added a new dimension to the channel! She is a gem, and I see why you love her SO much Mads!!! I always look forward to seeing the both of you each week!
Any man living in a confined space with his lady declares anything she does to be fantastic. Excellent survival skills Mads.
The DIY gods are smiling down on you Ava. Mads plan is coming together.

I remember making a spice rack in shop class in high school. I think we all did! You have to start somewhere!!
MDF and rain - LOL! The outtakes were hysterical too, You guys are so funny. Always enjoy your videos!
I have been waiting every week for 5 years for this " Companion Way" episode.
Make sure you create padding in that spice rack because it will sound like a musical orchestra when your out sailing 🎶🎵🌊⛵
outtakes are the best part..Ava and Mads compliment each other pefectly, thanks guys :)
Note for Ava, switch all of Mass metric measuring tools to US standard inches and feet tools.

Bravo Ava! Super dang spiffy results from your efforts, best is the obvious satisfaction in the work, well done! You too Mads!

Ava! Loved and laughed at your spice rack bit. Nice work.

Great job! Don’t forget the trim for the pole .
Looking forward to the new series "Diy with Ava" 👍👍
That spice rack is amazing. I need one just like it.

Well done to James!
Need more of Ava building stuff. That was fantastic!!!
Gotta feel for you Ava, I’m a total noob woodworker and having a somewhat detail oriented partner could just possibly be intimidating, the spice rack looks awesome! Congrats
Spice Spice Baby came out chef's kiss!
Big thumbs up to James, top man.
OOOH Very Spiffy Spicy Spice Rack, well done Ava!
I love the spice rack and the new companionway trim looks like a million bucks👍😁
What a lovely couple. Great video.

I just love these kids.

Good idea for felt to stop the rattling of the spice jars - they will not only rattle against each other, but also the bulkhead!

So happy to see Ava taking on projects as sailing is a duo process and both parties over time both learn from each other
Congrats to that wonderful workshop.
Brilliant wood working ideas. Ava has more promise as a finished furniture craftsperson !! 🤩
