No it's not -- he doesn't know what he's talking about. He said Roberts "gave way" because he was supposed to "preside". Then he goes on to say what a judge usually does, which is to conform the process by the rules of procedure, but that is where the Federal Rules of Procedure apply. This is the Senate, maybe he should have read that part of the Constitution. The Senate sets its rules, and that includes the rules that apply to trials on impeachment charges. Ace Nothing Yours is the only sane comment I’ve read . Everyone else commenting wants to pretend that our Republic was intact until Trump came along . The late Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. wrote “The Imperial Presidency “ back in 1973 . His 2 main concerns were that the presidency was now uncontrollable and that it had exceeded its constitutional limits. THAT WAS IN 1973 ! I lived through 8 years of Obama’s “Hope & Change” , where NO ONE challenged Obama on ANYTHING . Obama got away with murder for 8 years , and the country’s electorate never made a peep . The roosters have now come home to roost
I’m glad he mentioned the Declaration of Independence. People ought to read it. It’s extraordinarily beautiful. Look at the grievances, and you’ll see the same ones.
Trump is merely a symptom of what the US has become, especially over the last 40 years. The US Govt and US Corporate Media, including The New York Times, tells Lie after Lie. Frank Zappa predicted in the 1980's that the US would become a "fascist theocracy"; and that is what has happened. The US has no "allies"; they are "prisoners" of the US.
I'm 52 now. In my lifetime, I've never been more worried for this country. I have a background where I've lived abroad intermittently through my life (not military). So I've watched America change as both a citizen and outsider. The rank pseudo capitalism, economic inequality, poor education, xenophobia and myriad other problems the US has now are starting to look insuperable. I hope I'm wrong.
Time to worry. Who would have thought several years ago it would be conceivable we could go the way of Germany in the ‘30s. Yet it’s totally happening!

@Nikki E. Your comment is very interesting, you put in eloquent words what the issue with 'full cancel culture' is. Yes, we need to stop blindly adulating famous people as though they were perfect. They need to be presented in their historical context in both ways, the good and the bad. I think it is the lack of honor and respect that is still present to this day of the people like slaves and Natives in their everyday lives, in the history books children read, in the lack of statues representing minorities (including women in history) that makes it problematic the most. If they felt recognized, heard and that there had been real reparation towards them, we could start healing. I think the Germans have done rather well with rememberance plates all over that speak of the Jewish lives lost. Well explained in Micheal Moore's movie Where to Invade next.

The topic that Mr. Timothy Snyder presented in this interview is very concerning (sigh). I hope our current Republican regime is voted out of power this coming November, 2020. And we must insist that social media platforms and companies take responsibility to uphold their neutrality during the 2020 election campaign for the sake of our democracy. All this is a reminder that democracy is very sweet yet very fragile.
He's a nut job. In a May 2017 interview with Salon, Snyder warned that the Trump administration would attempt to subvert democracy by declaring a state of emergency and take full control of the government, similar to Hitler's Reichstag fire: "it’s pretty much inevitable that they will try."

(June 7) I'm heartened by his statement that we still have a chance - and he basically gave us a direction - It's good to start with resistance to call attention. But then we must know what we are FOR and vibrantly present those values as an alternative. Trump’s original lawyer was Roy Coen. Roy’s concern prior to a trial wasn’t the evidence, the witnesses, it was: who was the Judge?
No it's not -- he doesn't know what he's talking about. He said Roberts "gave way" because he was supposed to "preside". Then he goes on to say what a judge usually does, which is to conform the process by the rules of procedure, but that is where the Federal Rules of Procedure apply. This is the Senate, maybe he should have read that part of the Constitution. The Senate sets its rules, and that includes the rules that apply to trials on impeachment charges. Results; the resurgence of the Bloc; the rise of PP and similarly hyper-partisan groups, populism in the guise of reformists, wexiters, a yellow vest anti-immigration surge, socially conservatives anti-LGBT surge, etc. Democracy world wide is under threat. Don’t be fooled.
Trump has the entire Agenda-Driven Republican Party behind him. They have been planning for this "Event" a long time now.
He will not succeed....he is not that smart and the GOP that fell into his pocket will change in due time.

Wow! I found this one "by accident," and embodiment of Mr. Snyder's wise words are becoming even more evident today. (June 7) I'm heartened by his statement that we still have a chance - and he basically gave us a direction - It's good to start with resistance to call attention. But then we must know what we are FOR and vibrantly present those values as an alternative. Also he gave us a very specific goal: to get social media platforms ("without them this -rise of authoritarianism- would not be possible.") to accept responsibility, like other communication media has done in the past. "I believe in freedom of speech, but not for digital beings that don't have souls." So I need to find out what to do next!
Thank you Timothy Snyder for reminding me to talk less, and listen more to thoughtful, intelligent people as yourself.
Our last chance is in November! Vote blue! All the way through!
Absolutely, we have to take out the GOP. They put him there and perpetuated his reign. They will replace him with another candidate just as dangerous.
Patricia M which troll farm u work in? I can smell the stench of your trolling.
There will not be another election.
America is lost.
Trump is going to hold the elections hostage by a major red flag event that is or could be the next civil war.

In central Kentucky I find noone to speak to one on one in a world that seems to be changing below my feet like sand pulling from an unstoppable tide
Mr Snyder illustrates so clearly how dictators rise. One thing I would stress is improvement in education at the highschool badly needed. And no more homeschool.
High schoolers can be taught how to ask questions, as opposed to memorizing things, just about everything under the sun!
I will be 69 in a few days and people were saying that from way before my time. Before I started school at 6 my Mother asked the local teacher what I should be taught before and the teacher said nothing we start at 1amd A. Now kids know how to read and print and how to use technology from the age of 1. All the knowledge in the world is available to them weather they go to a school building or not. They are certainly not stupid but there is probably a certain lack of decipline that goes with being young. Ever trained a puppy?

Many americans still can’t see the writing on the wall.
Unfortunately Moscow Mitch and the Senate Republicans seem very happy about this. Smaller government doesn't mean having a dictator and abolish the government.
@yvonne khan. To use an English expression "Ignorance is bliss" Americans are not stupid. They can see it, but they don't want to read it. Trump is an autocrat and America is becoming an autocracy. Another 4 years, it will be during Trump's second term.
They can't see because they will not see. Ignorance is bliss, until it is not.

So we dislike Trump ... and what then ? We turn to a Democratic Party which has become so centrist, that the left no longer exists in the U.S ?

Venture Fanatic Enviable? Do you mean inevitable? I don't agree, this was a failure of the people. We have to understand how the electoral college works and target the swing states. We have to vote. We have to financially support our candidates and not leave it to the special interests. We have to peacefully reclaim our country. We also have to demand that our schools teach History and civics. Math and Science are important but understanding how are democracy works determines whether or not it will survive.
@@terryrobinson8975 The better way would be toturn the US into a proper democracy, where every vote has equal value.
This needs the end of grerrymandered electrol areas, the end of the electrol college, the end of winning by states, and a modernisation of the whole system. Prehaps a system similar to the German one, or the Australian one would serve better. But what ever the end result, any thing must be an improvement on what happens now.

Very thoughtful questions and answers from both sides of the microphone. In describing Trump as an authoritarian who purged numerous of his administration, I think he matches Stalin as close or more closely than Hitler. In either case, thankfully that administration is over. We have to be smarter in the future that we don’t allow a repeat.
