Watching this from Ukraine in 2023, impressively accurate analysis by Mr. Snyder, done 8 years ago, while even today a lot of people don't know what is going on.

I've been listening to this man for over a year but only just found this lecture (a huge thank you to the person in another comment section who recommended it to me! I returned the favour by recommending The Making Of Modern Ukraine series). Listening to this now is both chilling and illuminating. Vindicating, too, since this is the sort of thing I said (obviously not as well) in the arguments I started having with several of my friends and acquaintances after February 2022. I'm going to recommend this video to anyone I talk to about Ukraine from now on.
It's been a while since your comment, Maksym... I hope you and your loved ones are well and as safe as you can be. Переможете 💙💛

As an American expatriate living in Ukraine in 2014, I was bewildered by the inability of western journalists to comprehend that this was not a civil war between Russian speakers and speakers of Ukrainian... that there was no serious contention between the various nationalities and that these "little green men" were actually Russian soldiers. This lecture is helping me process what I previously could not define. Kudos Mr. Snyder. Your speech is more relevant today as so many people would rather let known propagandists (a.k.a. liars) like Tucker Carlson do their thinking for them.

On what specifics has Tucker Carlson lied in this context? I've been paying attention to the Ukraine/Russia conflict since 2013/2014,… even visited both countries in the surrounding vicinity of the conflict. From what I can tell this is largely a USA infringement on Russian neighborhood polarity (it's about regional social-political systems, not law, given the intertwined history of Russia in the region, eastern and south USSR-Ukraine area, which was Russia before it was Ukraine as a state then country, post 1991)

    • @EricYodis

@@bonsummers2657 TC has lied about everything... Ethnic issues in Ukraine, religious freedom and the supposed "Ukrainian" Orthodox church, opposition parties being outlawed, Zelensky breaking the constitution, and so on and so forth. While you "paid attention" to the conflict, I lived it. While you visited neighboring countries, I was living in Ukraine since 1995. Your view of history is incorrect. Russia was born out of Ukraine and not the other way around. Ukraine is Russia's mother and Russia is committing matricide. I used to think TC had poo for brains, but then I realized he has poo for a conscience. Your pedantic meanderings are worthless... Ukraine is its own country and it wants freedom. Russia has attacked without being provoked.

I am an Eastern bloc person. Czech. I was never surprised and I was always looking at that area with worry. Mixed nationality area + Russia as a neighbour + difficult history + inequality in industry and wealth. What could go wrong? When Putin started tightening up screws, first coming back as a ruler forever, going after opposition, press... I was like "why the hell nobody is doing anything against it?" After Crimea I was livid. Nobody seemed to notice it´s getting serious. Why do people who actually understand the problem never get the floor to influence politicians?

Our media is in favour of the nato-propaganda. In regards to ukraine we exclusively hear news from the ukraine "Wahrheitsministerium" (ministry of truth). "Truth" is always a matter of perspective. csenuber Nope, you are wrong. Ukrainian peasants were just as poor as polish peasants, and Ukrainian nobles were just as rich as Polish nobles. Except after a few generations those Ukrainian nobles started to speak Polish, which alienated the peasants.
Except Ukraine had these things called Cossacks, which were paid based on a 'registry' and had special privileges others did not. Those Cossacks got pissed off Poland would not increase their registry and was preventing them from raiding neighboring Ottoman lands (due to peace treaty) so they riled up the Ukrainian peasants, started a revolution in the hopes of becoming absolute rulers.
Well guess what happened, they became worse then slaves, all the cossacks were ELIMINATED. And Ukraine has only been worse off since.

He is wrong on Russiagate if "one" "looks at" "the evidence" I have heard of. It seems like if we went back and established what the "facts" of the Meuller Report are, we might have a hard time disagreeing in public, or it would be an excellent debate. I read Anne Applebaum's "Red Famine" and noticed her speaking with a Russian anti-Ukranian way of doing things bias that had nothing to do with the Holodomor. It seems as if, historically, the Russians and Ukranian people have a lot in common. Victimhood becomes complex. Going back to the beginning of things is sometimes useful. How do we certify that the Ukranian election was "free and fair?"

There's also the point that journalism in Ukraine is incredibly unprofessional. Short of a couple really bright reporters and investigators like Yuri Butusov, we have nothing to counter the Russian lies with because our news outlets don't produce strong and convincing stories either. We have nothing to show internationally to counter RT.

    • @38subjecthandbook

VioletGiraffe I couldn't agree more. Most Ukrainian journalists are so emotionally involved in the conflict, they don't seem to notice how much of their writing is rhetoric and propaganda, and how little of it provides information that could be used to counter Kremlin's. Compared to Russians, they are amateurs. Which raises the question, what were those proverbial State Dept's $5 billion spent on? If you invest in a country's civil society, shouldn't you spend some on training journalists and editors?

This guy really started to bore me. He did say he was a conservative and based on his presentation he definitely revealed this. He talks of the history of Ukraine but he fails to provide anything about the specific intervention of the USA/CIA cabal that has been interfering with countries throughout the world.
If he wanted, he could have done a short history of Allen Dulles and his merry men that have caused much death and destruction throughout the world.
Very quickly I would mention some people that have probably influenced his thinking. Leo Strauss, Donald Kagan, Norman Podhoretz, Irving Kristal, Paul Wolfowitz, Elliott Cohen, Elliott Cohen, Elliott Abrams and Kimberly Allen.
One person he doesn't mention is the former Secretary of State of the USA and US Ambassador during the crisis in Kiev in 2014. The two names are Victoria Nuland and Geoffrey Pratt. They were directly involved of the overthrow (coup) of the democratically elected president at the time.
There is a leaked audio recording of Nuland and Pratt deciding on who will be the next president of the Ukraine. I only mention this to indicate that there are key moments in history and I would think this would have stood out.
"Men will not accept truth at the hands of their enemies, and truth is seldom offered to them by their friends: for this very reason I have spoken it.
    - Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America I believe Alexis was spot on.
Years ago, Alexander Solzhenitsyn said this. "The United States is placing its occupation troops in one country after another. This is the de facto situation in Bosnia for 9 years, in Kosovo and Afghanistan for 5 years each, in Iraq for 3 years so far, but it will be a long time there. There is little difference between NATO’s actions and individual U.S. actions. Clearly seeing that today’s Russia poses no threat to them, NATO is methodically and persistently developing its military apparatus - to the east of Europe and into the continental reach of Russia from the south. There is open material and ideological support for “color” revolutions, and the paradoxical introduction of North Atlantic interests - in Central Asia. All this leaves no doubt that a complete encirclement of Russia is being prepared, and then the loss of its sovereignty. No, Russia’s accession to such a Euro-Atlantic alliance, which conducts propaganda and the violent introduction into various parts of the planet of the ideology and forms of current Western democracy - would lead not to expansion, but to the decline of Christian civilization."

I can not fathom the fact that, since you shed the light on the historical background as a bedrock to understand the current situation but you didn't mention anything concerning the Crimean wars, the annexation of the Western Russian to Ucraine. Without talking about these 2 historical elements you can not understand the Ucrainian case no matter how go deeper. It is a kind of, as you mentioned, following the track of events. The Eastern Ucraine was part of Russia. It means those who live there are originally Russian. It follows that if a government ruled under a coup d'etat is becoming hostile to this minority living in the Eastern side the most normal thing, knowing very well that they can be backed by a super power that is Russia, is to show a kind of resistance to such hostility. In 1954 the Comuinst president Khrutchov, without consulting anyone, simply handed over Crimea to the government of Crimea, knowing very well the most strategic importance of Crimea in terms of having dominance over the black sea and having access to Europe and the Middle East. I want just to add something:the fact that you didn't mention these two big historical events is indeed a distortion of historical facts that lead to a misunderstanding of what is really going right now.

You should stop watching RT and wake up. Crimea was devasted after WWII and Ukraine became liable to rebuild it. In 1991 Jelzin, (i guess) Kutcha and Lukachenko hand in hand walked in to Gorbachev to proclaim independancy of the 3 states, in 1994 Russia again guaranteed Ukrainian sovereignty. But, before all, the Ukrainians - including the russian speakers - fight like hell against the invaders. What you call "eastern" Europe to us has always been the middle of this part of the continent, which is right called "Eurasia." Asia, 'behind' the Urals is where Asia begins and Europe ends. What speaker tells you about Ukraine goes all the way for Russia too. Calling everything behind Vienna "eastern" is a false and distorting legacy of Churchill's "Iron Curtain."

There are many countries in Europe aside from France and England that existed as unitary kingdoms in the past but were subsumed by empires and then revived as nation states in the modern era. For an historian i find it totall mindblowing, bearing in mind the subject.
He for got to mention something that Obama neglected to be aware of when let his mouth run off about Kiev being nothing to do with Russia.
THAT FACT IS, "KIEV WAS THE CAPITAL CITY OF RUSSIA FOR MANY YEARS," not a point that a good historian would miss out because it played a very big part in both Russia history and in Ukraine history, its one of the main reasons for the best part of the population of Ukraine only speaking Russian, even today most Ukraine words are very close to Russian words with the exeption of a few, so when Obama told Mr. Putin that the Ukraine was nothing to do with Russia he was totally wrong, the same as his statement about AMERICA being older the Europe, what a load of rubish.
America was ocupied by people for a loong time before anyone from Europe being there.
Even the vikings learn a lot from the occupants ofTurtle island., which is what the true Americans called it, and they numbered into the millions
The America of today only started with the invasion by the white man, very late in European history, Europe had been around in the form it is now for a good many years before that happened which makes America the youngest nation on earth, and the most aggresive, they conducted a heavy genocide act on the indian population that coupled with lies and broken promises that have continued to today.
America holds the world record for breaking every promise it has ever made, if anyone doubts that try asking a Decota indian just how many agreements were they ripped off with.
It is a nation that holds world records, firstly they have started more conflicts around the world than any other nation.
They have killed more people than two world wars put together.
They are they only people to have used atimic weapons on others non stop to the present day, yes, depleted uranium shells and bombs are atimic weapons, they create the same problems with regards to health.
So my advise would be before you say your an historian make double sure you know your history front and back, plus all the bits you would rather not mention because it paints a different picture of the real America than you like.

I'm horriby dissapointed with Snyder - his lecture isn't about going from propaganda to reality, it's about going from one propaganda to another propaganda.
He does explain well the holes and faults of Russian propaganda, but he doesn't touch in any way the holes and faults of Ukrainian propaganda. And there are many, many things here like:
    - The "who financed Maidan?" question. I'm not saying the protesters were being paid, no - but somebody provided material support (supplies) and to this moment it isn't publically known who.
    - Why is the Ukrainian artillery bombarding civilians in Donetsk, including bombardment using cluster ammunition? (Human
    Rights Watch info).
    - Why is Ukraine tolerating neo-nazi elements like the "Azov battalion", why neonazis are allowed into positions of power, like the chief of police in Kiev?
I think that he bad things Snyder is telling about Russia are indeed true, but I hate the fact that he obviously uses DOUBLE STANDARDS and doesn't aproach the Ukrainian side of the conflict with the same criticism. Because of that, even though what's he's saying about what's wrong with Russia is true, the whole package is unfortunately biased propaganda, because he doesn't speak about what's wrong with Ukraine.
It's very easy to create biased propaganda without any lying - all is needed is to present all the faults of party #1, but without informing about the faults of party #2. And unfortunately, Snyder does that.
Summary: It's not "From propaganda to reality". It's "Let's disbelieve Russian propaganda, but believe Ukrainian propaganda instead". I'm perfectly fine with the first part, but completely against the second.

And Russians actions in Ukraine may be reply on Western's strategy in Eastern Europe. It's really geopolitical and there is no fight of good and evil.

+Dmitry Lecter That's OK, your English seems absolutely fine to me :)
Snyder, at least in this speech, makes an argument against one-sided perceptions. Whether American or Russian, he's saying that if someone intentionally views (and shows) the world from a single perspective, it will lead to the truth being left out. I don't think this, or the way he delivers it, has anything to do with American exceptionalism (which, as an American, I agree is a horrible, horrible thing).
Now, to make something clear: I'm sure there are pro-democracy NGOs in Russia funded by the US. I'm also sure there are many who (officially or not) are an opposition to Putin. But you have to acknowledge that there are also patriotic, smart Russians, in Russia, who believe in democracy and will work for it ( either in a pro-dem NGO or some other way). And I find it highly unlikely (and, as of yet, unproven) that the only reason american civil society organizations fund Russian civil society organizations is to be politically active. Quite often the reason they do it is because they want better research from the region or because they genuinely feel that their activities help people regardless of their nationality. American civil society is not the same as our government - it's important that you respect that.
And still, my point stands: having been harmed in the past (and I agree that NATO expanded too fast, etc) doesn't mean you should disregard all rules and norms today. The same way you don't have to be fascist and nazi to support a Ukrainian state, you don't have to be Russian to recognize that Russia was left to rot for the last 20-25 years.
It's ok to have strong reactions against Western pressure, but it's not OK to start a bloody land war without taking any responsibility. It's dishonest. There are people in the west who respect and admire Russia, but Putin & co are losing their support incredibly fast. And they're doing so while harming Russians, too. I think this is why so many in the west simply can't understand the Russian point of view in this: our traditions tell us that the nation isn't the same as its leader and that being critical of power is a good thing. Putin is telling Russians never to question him and to equate Russia, Russians, and himself.
And when you say geopolitics, it makes it seem like there's no Ukraine to talk about - only Russia and America. And this is exactly what's wrong with this kind of talk, as Snyder says in his lecture. I think that's harmful.

This historical accounting seems to be rather flawed and missed so many actions by other countries it could have been given by the CIA. For instance you seem to have misunderstood that the uprising against the pro - soviet leader was not down to him being against joining the EU, he tried to join but he was rebuffed just as Zelenskyy was encouraged to join but was not accepted. You paint the police as violently trying to prevent the uprising but those watching the protests could see that the police were unarmed and were pelted with Molotov cocktails and the armed Maidan Fascists had weapons and were shooting both police and protestors from the back of the crowds. Furthermore the protests were real but were taken over by armed fascist groups trained and armed by the USA and who were using extreme violence against leftist organizations. All of us who watched the Nazis burn down the building housing unionist and see people burn or jump to their death while police did nothing to stop this clear message that those opposing the US engineered coup would be intimidated or killed. Oh yes we heard Veronica Nuland and Jeffrey Pyatt discussing who they would put in the Government and the roles these people would play when the US Government had taken over the Ukrainian Government. Let's not pretend that the coup was a natural uprising by the people. We also heard that Nuland cursed the little support of the EU and pointed out the USA had put $50 million dollars into the coup. Funny how people have very different memories of history and where the USA is involved there is always a lot of amnesia around their recollections.

One strange and disturbing part of the human condition is that our perceptions and beliefs about the world do tend to manifest in objective reality. Just because something is not true does not mean that it will not happen. In fact the more counterfactual these beliefs are the more likely they are to become reality.
Now, the above statements this might sound a little crazy so let's give some concrete examples.
So lets assume that we have person A who believes that the government is out to get him. Without knowing any of the specifics in this case we can conclude that the beliefs of person A are either
    1. True. As in the case where A lives in East Germany and holds from the governments point of view deviant beliefs. In this case A's beliefs correspond to reality. This is also the best possible outcome because A's correct judgement will
prevent him from doing anything stupid. With a little luck A might even end up in West Germany.
    2. False. As in the case where A lives in Iceland. In this case A has misjudged the situation. A's beliefs are false but the stronger he believes in them being true the greater the likelihood of the government locking him up in a mental institution. A's
beliefs may be false but this does not mean that the government will do him no harm.
And so it is with international relations. The Russian government has correctly or incorrectly judged the EU to be an enemy. In the case where the EU is an actual enemy they have made a correct decision. This does not mean that Russia will become victorious but at least they have correctly recognized a threat and acted accordingly.
However in the case where they have made an incorrect judgement they have now made the EU an actual enemy. You cannot treat the EU or any large and powerful states like the US as an enemy and not produce a hostile response. If Russia's goal is to destroy the EU then regardless of how EU previously saw the situation they will at the very least make the destruction of the Russian government a priority. Threats of this kind are not to be taken lightly.

If there are three dodgy assumptions in the first sentence of the video description, how can I trust the claim that Timothy Snyder is the "world's leading historian of Eastern Europe"? Those shouting "propaganda" the loudest are often upset that their antithetical propaganda isn't the only hogwash out there, and Snyder is no exception. Case in point, his rant against "post-modern stuff" at 48:30. He thinks discussion between several people with multiple viewpoints trivializes important events; turning them into "nothing" . How that conclusion can be drawn from what he said we will never know but, regardless, what alternative is there other than promoting one explanation for the event? This explanation will probably be unproven (no-one knows what happened to MH17), and I expect it will be one that he regards as "reality"? Snyder is fighting for propaganda, not against it. It's a shame that someone this biased, with no concept of what distinguishes politically desirable assumptions from evidence-based facts, could be teaching at a prestigious university. Put this man in a science class. It will make him a better historian.

Artificial Soviet Republic of Ukraine was created by Bolsheviks in artificial boundaries in 1922, it was one of the Soviet Socialist Republics, it was an integral part of the Soviet Union, with centralized system of management and State Governmental Planning. Since the time of Russian Empire, the Southern Governorates of Russia, Donbass, the industrial hub of Empire, ( in 1922 included by Bolsheviks in republic Ukraine ) these Southern territories of Russian Empire were intensely developed, influenced by location, climate, proximity to the Black Sea with its ports and cities built by Russia, long before Bolsheviks created Ukraine.
Before the Soviet Ukraine emerged "by the virtue" of Bolsheviks, the short lived "Ukrainian People's Republic" was proclaimed originally. Read "New York Times", 1918. article "Dismembered Russia- Some of the Fragments" - briefly about Collapse of Russian Empire and New Nations on its remnants,
"New Nation - Ukraine", as a fragment of Russian Empire after the Revolution.
Some important facts about this "New Nation - Ukraine" within 1917 - 1921:
There were endless "Military conflicts between different governmental, political and military forces: Ukrainian nationalists, anarchists, Bolsheviks, the forces of Germany and Austria-Hungary, the White Russian Volunteer Army, and Second Polish Republic forces.
The Allied forces of Romania and France also became involved.
The struggle lasted from February 1917 to November 1921 and resulted in the division of Ukraine between the Bolshevik Ukrainian SSR, Poland, Romania, Chechoslovakiа.
The conflict is frequently viewed as one within the framework of the Southern Front of the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922, as well as the closing stage of the Eastern Front of the
      First World War of 1914-1918."

The current USA war in Syria and the 2019 "Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act", for example, pose a problem for some of Prof Snyder's benevolent arguments about the USA. In 2014, the problem was not known, nor did have the developments it has today. It is understandable. Thanks Prof Snyder, anyway for the Brilliant way you summarized and explained of Ukraine's problems, in Hystory perspective. Never the less, I bet more on efficiency in "solving" the problem, in Mearsheimer's political science perspective.

@Jon Little I think you're right. But unfortunately for the Romantics - all of us - propaganda only trumps doctrines when we refer to doctrines that do not underlie force. The USA give names to things, after those who invent it, Monroe, one example. Russians are more closed, they are just honest and face-to-face, and say what they admit, and what they don't admit. If Ukraine was located in Panama, or in Cuba, and it crossed his mind to "put-Chinese-or-Russian-missiles-at-the-USA-door"... he he he... cabum for sure, nuclear, if necessary, no doubt.

Alex Istinspring Once again, I am writing in response to Cadet Alex Istinspring's expositions, and once again, I merely wish to point out that Tartuffism has nothing to do with Fabianism. But first, I'm going to jump ahead a bit and talk in general terms about how Alex could use some etiquette lessons. Then, I'll back up and fill in some of the details. Okay, so to start with the general stuff, I have a scientist's respect for objective truth. That's why I'm telling you that Alex is malevolent, disreputable, and balmy and shows no inclination to change. Do I blame society for this? No, I blame Alex. He maintains that he values our perspectives. That's not just a lie but is actually the exact opposite of the truth-and Alex knows it. Why is Alex deliberately turning the truth on its head like that? This can be answered most easily by stating that Alex's paroxysms are more than just despicable. They're a revolt against nature. To quote the prophet Isaiah, “Woe to ye who flout all of society's rules”. By refusing to act, by refusing to stand up and fight for our heritage, traditions, and values, we are giving Alex the power to restructure the social, political, and economic relationships that exist throughout our entire society. He's a model of wanton sleaze, a perfect picture of ingratitude, a paradigm of recidivism. As such, Alex is reluctant to resolve problems. He always just looks the other way and hopes no one will notice that if this letter did nothing else but serve as a beacon of truth, it would be worthy of reading by all right-thinking people. However, this letter's role is much greater than just to shed the light of truth on the evil that is Alex. If Alex's self-deceiving slurs became more widespread, it would spell the ruination of this country.Would we, as thinking people, believe swindlers who tried to tell us we're all heartless? I say “no.” I appreciate feedback and other people's views on subjects. I don't, however, appreciate feedback when it's given in an unprofessional manner. In Alex's limited horizon he himself is the important object. As a sequence to this self-conceit, he imagines that the only way to expand one's mind is with drugs-or maybe even chocolate. We therefore need to explain to him that his opinions raise a number of brow-furrowing questions. I'm referring to questions such as, “What is his secret agenda?” It's questions like that that surely get people thinking about how Alex's factotums very much belong to an intellectual closed shop. They refuse to entertain the possibility that if we let Alex sow the seeds of terrorism we'll be reaping the crop for quite a long time.I've observed at least one of Alex's devotees calling for a return to that which wasn't particularly good in the first place. This is absolutely indicative of the unprofessional, ungracious, and unacceptable behavior that is so endemic to Alex's junta. Dadaism is a kind of prison. It is also, paradoxically, a haven. It is at once confining and empowering. And in the absence of alternative havens, Dadaism will for many of Alex's understrappers continue to be a source of comfort, something to free them from having to confront the fact that I, for one, have seen numerous lethargic, stentorian used-car salesmen effectuate the downfall of all that is decent and civilized. What's sad is that Alex tolerates (relishes?) this flagrant violation of democratic principles and the rule of law. That just goes to show that in the midst of our mighty struggle to provide an atmosphere of mutual respect, free from Bulverism, materialism, and all other forms of prejudice and intolerance, I have seen too many people stand on the sidelines and mouth pious irrelevancies and sanctimonious trivialities. I have watched too many people accept without challenge Alex's crotchety, cynical claim that he's merely trying to make this world a better place in which to live. And I have observed too many people fail to realize that I find it necessary, if I am to meet my reader on something like a common ground of understanding, to point out that you may be worried that Alex will plunge us into the vortex of militarism within a short period of time. If so, then I share your misgivings. But let's not worry about that now. Instead, let's discuss my observation that Alex has planted his janissaries everywhere. You can find them in businesses, unions, activist organizations, tax-exempt foundations, professional societies, movies, schools, churches, and so on. Not only does this subversive approach enhance Alex's ability to force women to live by restrictive standards not applicable to men, but it also provides irrefutable evidence that he does not tolerate any view that differs from his own. Rather, Alex discredits and discards those people who contradict him along with the ideas that they represent. Before you know it, Alex will find a country in the midst of a civil war, install a ramshackle provisional government, and instruct that government to force us to tailor our crusades just to suit his crass whims. Sounds pretty subversive, doesn't it? But is it any more so than Alex's immature treacheries? One might conclude that he spews lies as easily as a squid squirts ink. Alternatively, one might conclude that one task that rests on all of our shoulders is to reveal some shocking facts about his complaints. In either case, I am truly at a loss for words when he asserts that a book's value to the reader is somehow influenced by the color of the author's skin. He can't possibly be serious. I suspect that the real story here is that I'm not in the habit of giving advice to Alex's bilious worshippers. However, there's always a first time: You guys should stop advocating fatalistic acceptance of a duplicitous new world order. I, not being one of the many irascible, gruesome stumblebums of this world, admit I don't have much confidence that they'll follow that advice, but it's important to make it known that there are some basic biological realities of the world in which we live. These realities are doubtless regrettable, but they are unalterable. If Alex finds them intolerable and unthinkable, the only thing that I can suggest is that he try to flag down a flying saucer and take passage for some other solar system, possibly one in which the residents are oblivious to the fact that Alex and his conveniently bribed allies have been embarking on wholesale torture and slaughter of innocent civilians. As bad as that is, it represents only the thin end of the wedge. Sometime soon, Alex will likely insult my intelligence. Now that you've read my entire letter, I hope you've concluded that my plan to challenge Cadet Alex Istinspring's victim-blaming ideology is deserving of serious consideration. IN SHORT

This historical rendition by Snyder on the Ukraine is very confusing.....When the Vikings came down, they encountered the Khazars converting to Judaism in Kiev??
The Khazars were Turkic and occupied the area between the Black and Caspian Sea that periodically seiged upon its neighboring countries, including Crimea and the Ukraine.
The Khazar's did not convert to Judaism in Kiev, they were in their own country because of the upheaval that was going on at the time between their position and their neighboring countries, and not wanting to side with any, used Judaism as an excuse to be neutral. It was not about religion, it was about power play,,,,
Contrary to what Snyder stated that the Vikings found the Khazars in Kiev, does not ring true with History, in fact, sitting in Kiev in 988 were the Kievan - Rus and ruling at the time was Vladmir,
A quick look at History, shows us that Vladmirs rule came about by Rurik in 870-1000, who came down from the Northern parts and when Rurik died, his son Igor being too young, was succeeded by Oleg in 882, and Oleg merged the 2 cities of Novgorod and Kiev which became the Captial.
When Oleg died his son Igor became king in 913 and when he died, his wife Olga -945- took his place. Olga had converted to Christianity, the Greek Orthodox......and when she died, her son Sviatoslav 963 - took over and when he died in battle, his son Yaropolk became king in 972. Yaropolk had a half brother called Vladimir who he had expelled but Vladimir raised an army, came back, disposed of his half brother and became king in 988...
When the Vikings came down via the trading route into Kiev, it was Vladmir that was sitting in power in 988, not the Khazars......Vladimir is important to the Russians because it was through his search of the Religions, that he settled on the Greek Orthodox religion from the South. and his eventual marriage to Anna, the daughter of the then Byzantine Emperor, moved up to Keiv and under a decree by Vladimir, everyone was to adopt Greek Orthodoxy.......Thus, Kiev for the first time, became Christian..... and Central to the Greek Orthodox Church..
But this history did not begin here 870-1000, it began many years before......Russia was birthed in the Ukraine......in Kievan - Rus. nor did the Rus, simply disappear as Snyder purports and as for the Khazars, they were dispersed after their fall, the Kaghan king, with his elected officials and a few of his followers, moved into Southern Russia, and others to Spain, Portugal,

Topcat Amen for having intelligence +1. This sham artist and a liar is incredibly popular in Poland and the Baltic states where pro-Nazi, anti-Jewish and anti-Soviet internal policy of historical revisionism has been the norm since break of USSR. So much so that he has been awarded from two of the Baltic states their highest medal award! He is also one of those people who have simply added their fantasies Ukrainian history which did not exist before in any documented historical facts.
PS. I have a map from 1987, a study done in slightly earlier showing Russia's ethnic composition and i do not see the word "Ukraine" or "Ukrainian" ANYWHERE on that map. I see only the word: "Petit Russes" where modern geographical Ukraine exists, though its missing the "Grand Russes" lands given by Bolsheviks. 3rd ethnic group is "Blanc Russes". Plus many many other non-Russian ethnic groups. Damn, even the ESTONIANS are shown there, but no mythical "Ukrainians".

He lost me when he said "we, Americans are actually an OLD nation". Now I know he's just fabricating and creating new history. Americans are actually Europeans who stole land and ethnically cleansed it from it's original inhabitants, the indigenous native Americans. But here's a run down memory lane. The first documented visitors who briefly settled in North America were the Vikings. This is well documented and there's archaeological evidence of it in Newfoundland and Labrador. Followed by Chinese traders, then various seafarers, until around 1400s when the slaughter began by the Europeans, mainly from various ethnic western European areas such as Ireland, Scotland, Britain and France, to ethnically cleanse North America and steal the land from the Native Americans. So no, you're not an old nation, a stolen one but certainly not an old nation.

He makes a lot of weird assertions, and suggesting America is an old nation in comparison to the redrawn European borders of the 20th century is silly, America and Canada were tiny fragments of what they became over those hundreds of years.... but I disagree with your assertion that it was based on ethnic cleansing, the vast majority was empty, and the indigenous people let them take the land for the most part, having a different conceptualization of land

Bravo! to his subtle remark on how US is on its way to becoming an oligarchical system (where a minority of elites control nearly all of the wealth) and how we adopt similar propaganda tactics as the Kremlin.
I love Schneiders ability to accuratly disect a geopolitical conflict and eloquently convey the motifs of regimes and how it relates to us in the west.
This talk has aged perfectly since 2014 seeing how things have unfolded now both in Ukraine and in the west.
It's funny seeing the Russian trolls in the comments below trying to undermine his points when 8 years later we see (and have clear evidence of) a cancerous Russian authorian state continuing to meddle with Western views on democracy and freedom. All because its a threat to the Oligarchs pockets and their Impirical aspirations.
Russian Oligarchs want the Russian people to be stupid and direct the faults on the West so they can continue to be exploited.
The Ukrainians are much smarter however and are fighitng to overcome this tyranny.

The problem of Ukrainian identity is simple. They all speak Russian as a mother tongue and try to deny it because it is profitable now. All their presidents, military officers, state officials are native Russian speakers. Some of them like president Kuchma, Kiev mayor Klichko or ultra nationalist Yarosh were even born, grown up and educated in Russia itself far from Ukraine. My roots are from Ukraine, but I never been there. If I decided one day relocate there and speak Ukrainian language in public it will take me a few months to achieve. I know plenty of Russians without known Ukrainian roots who moved to Kiev from Moscow due to political, business or personal reasons and many hard born western Ukrainians from Lviv who moved to Moscow. The former Russians are the most pro Ukrainian political activists in Kiev and the former hard core Ukrainians are the most pro Russian activists in Kremlin camp.
Unfortunately it is hard for the US professor to understand.

Fortunately there's a lot of footage from eyewitnesses (everyone's got a smartphone these days) that truly reveal that this MSM official narrative is super biased.
