I lived and worked in STHLM for a couple of years. It is basically a ghost town in July and August, when most people take their summer vacations. During that time, most of the people moving about the city center are tourists. Must be a strange experience for them :)

The answer why should have been obvious to me.
Because so many are on vacation, there's noticeably less traffic!

@@waelfaraj6705 you can travel by any kind of boat you like in Sweden. I believe around 50 percent of the Swedish population owns some kind of boat. And there are ferries, boat rentals, and much more.

In very cold countries summer is the most important time of the year because people can go out and really enjoy life better.

The Swedish holidays kind of show how much Sweden was dominated by industry until fairly recently. A factory needs its full workforce to produce, so it can't just let people go on holiday whenever they want. And since the law mandates that everyone has the right to a summer holiday, the industry just shut the entire factory down for a month. And since all the suppliers also had to shut down, all the industries coordinated their holiday so all factories where shut down during the same weeks. This of course also meant that if you wanted to have your holiday during some other week, you would almost certainly get a hard NO.
I believe this is all changing, the number of Swedes working in factories is on the way down and most people are free to choose when they want to go on holiday. But most still do it in the summer, for obvious reasons.

I follow you, partly to support you and at the same time hear how others think of Sweden and give tips.
What I will now say to those who are considering moving to Sweden or have recently moved here.
Take and learn from us Swedes to be able to unwind and have a calmer life during the summer. We Swedes usually say that people are not born to work, but also to have a family and enjoy life.
Think about how nice you can have it during the summer with a long, continuous vacation, or split the semesters and take more and shorter vacations, but this depends on what you work in. In my municipality Kiruna, those who work within the municipality, you first have 4 weeks of vacation, then it increases to 5 weeks and when you turn 50, you have 6 weeks of vacation. Many people divide up and spread out during the year, for example I took out 4 weeks during the summer and saved 2 weeks to take out during Christmas and the New Year.
Since it is mentioned in the film about being stressed if you move here during the summer, I tell you to take it easy because it won't go faster because you are stressed.

The "classical Industry vacation" is week 28-32. Still many companies closes some or the whole of that time.
But today many takes their semester at different times. Or saves some weeks for a winter vacation if they want to go ski or some warm places. We also have the fact that you can "work in - save up" extra days besides the 5 weeks paid vacation.
In my last job we did another thing too. We worked abit more Monday to Thursday. So we could go home 1300 on friday. So we could get a longer weekend end each week. Some also choosed instaed to get a raise. To work less... Sweden has good opportunities to regilate youre free time..And with pay...

Sweden closing in the summer was more common in the 70s and 80s. Back then it was called an industrial holiday. Almost everything closed during the month of July. Of course not healthcare and grocery stores as examples. But much was less staffed.
Now it's more of a rolling holiday for many people. The so-called industrial holiday is basically gone. However, you must have 3 weeks of continuous summer holiday according to law

it's not law that you must take holiday. However if you're in a union you have right to "the law on your side" to take out 3weeks if you for exampel work in healthcare, and 4 weeks on most of the other works. But no, you're not forced to take it out..

Hi Uli. There is a law that sais you must take atliest three weeks a row in the month of Jun, July or August, but there are companys and Haelth cares that there you can sign up for to move your sommer hollieday into the autumn with a extra payment for that move.

@Living Swedish Not to forget we Swedes may need a "little" extra vitamin D after the very looooong loooong vinter darkness.. =) And after we come back from the vacation we are fully recharged to be focused on the job again. Not to forget we also get the first week to slowly start your body up to get ready for work. It takes time to restart and wake up your body after a long holiday =)

I think living to work is the wrong mindset, we ought to work to live. Both in the literal sense, but also in the more metaphorical sense. Hence how I think Sweden handles vacation as well

I don´t have much to add about the summer seasong you already told in this video. But you must have picked wrong cleaning company who can´t provide you with cleaning staff(s) during the summer holiday. I have hired cleaning personals privatly for a couple of yuers and they come regurly and clean, regardles of what time of the year it is. And as an private person it is worth paying for them due to the famous "RUT-avdrag".

Yeh, I mean I can see that they treat their cleaning staff well. I feel like it's a good company and I'm otherwise happy with the service. So I will just clean myself for that period of time 😅

The swedish law says that you have right to take three weeks of vaccation in a row, without interruption. So the employer can't deny you that. Also the law says that you have the right to five weeks vaccation every year. That's why we have long vaccations and everyone is taking it during the summer, unlike America for example.

Wellcome to crazyland and its crazy people!
Im glad you is able to figure out why!
Its to a big part season driven behavior, at winter we are kind of "hibernating", but at summer we tryes to be "medeterainians"!
At spring and autum its a mix!
In anyway, we are not that different frome other europeans, we share mostly the same values and culture.. its more about seasons!
At spring ones colleges starts talking about there "vacation plans", later in Juny ones company want to know your "vacation plan", becuse they have to plan!
Soo what says the law.. it says that one is allowed to take 4 weeks vacation in a row, in Juny, July or August.. if you want that.. and many industries close for 2-4 weeks.. so for me it was more about, taking vacationtime befor or after 2 weeks of the total closure!
As working in Gothenburg and Volvo as one of our bigger customer, we close our workshop when Volvo did! (Industrisemester)!
Fore white collar workers.. its even more importante to put up a "vacation plan" and get it aproved by ones managment, becuse they seldom totaly close there office, its more about that they use half staff or half opening hours!
In anyway.. wellcome to crazyland, make the best of swedish summer, take your children to Germany and UK.. it would be the best season for that!
