Remember the episode when Elizabeth was trying to learn all of the recipes of grandma ‘s. There was one particular cake she just couldn’t get right. I think she had tried at least three times. Grandma finally revealed the one ingredient she left out. It was the recipe as was referred from the steel of the Baldwin ladies. That was a good one!
I was born in 1968 and I used to watch the Waltons, Gunsmoke, petticoat junction, Beverly hillbillies, green acres, lassie, f troop, little house on the prairie, bonanza, big valley and the list goes on. 😄
This one brought tears to my eyes. We watched this show as a family and now so many of those that I cherished & loved so much are gone. Thank you for this recipe & beautiful memory. I will cherish it and pass it on to our daughter and think of all those we have waiting on us in Heaven to rejoice with one day. Blessings ya'll! ✝️💕
Howdy folks, I'm your neighbor over here in Oklahoma. When I was in high school, I started to make an applesauce cake from a recipe from the side of our bag of Shawnee Flour. My daddy loved it so much! He used to say, "Sis, will you make me one of your apple sauce cakes today?" That was in the mid-seventies. Daddy died my sophomore year. I'd give anything to hear him ask me to make it for him again. I can't remember the recipe, and I can't find it. I do think it was quite a bit like this one. I made it in a bundt pan. It had a glaze rather than frosting. Thanks for posting this. I am going to give it a try!
I saw Judy Norton (Mary Ellen) make Olivia’s Apple sauce cake, two weeks ago on her RUclips channel. It sounds delicious 😋 I’m happy you’re sharing the “RECIPE” lol
The Walton's is one of my all time favorite TV shows. Mom and I used to watch it together. She would often cry through the program because it reminded her so much of her growing up days during the Great Depression. Many sweet memories. So excited about getting this recipe. So special.
I loved watching the Waltons and little house on the Prairie, many memories with my mom and dad watching. We weren't a real close family but those 2 nights, monday and Thursday, we all sat together.
Amen, We still watch them , Great holsome movies, not all the craziness out there now ,that's what I watch alot of good youyube content Like Mrs lori . Have a blessed weekend Mrs j Texas ❤️ 🙏
I've recently been watching The Waltons on Utube and I love it more now that I'm older than when I did as a teen.... I just watched the episode where Grandma was teaching Elizabeth to cook the cake and finally telling her the secret ingredient was a little of THE RECIPE from the Baldwin sisters! Shocked me and gave me a belly laugh coming from Grandma!
This is awesome!!! This is the cake Olivia made for Christmas on the very first Walton movie before the Series began!!! Patricia Neal played Olivia in this movie!!! I think she had to walk to Ikes store to get some sugar to make the cake and the kids were cracking nuts out in the barn for the cake!!! Good memories for sure!!! I just love your vintage kitchen!!! Reminds me of my Grandparents cozy kitchen where Grandma spent hours cooking on an old wood stove!!! I made a banana cake with cinnamon this am and decided to make a brown sugar icing...It was like fudge by the time I was done with it!!! Tasted great!!! Thanks for sharing this recipe!!! God Bless🙏
janice NICHOLS- Yes, THE HOMECOMING, set in 1933. I have that movie on VHS and DVD. I love that movie and could sit down with the Waltons and fit right in. Our NH working farm is a testament to 1940. We are pretty much frozen in time. My father-in- law's 1940 panel farm truck is still in the hay barn. We have to roll it out to get it started! When we built our farm cottage in 2016, the kitchen is a combination of 1930 and 2016. The back wall has a 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove and a 1924 Hoosier baking cabiet. Also a 1900s Faultless treadle. Only thing I'm missing is an oak ice box. Still looking for a small one. New Hampshire winters often have power outages, so we use the wood stove often. That was an awesome era!
Thank you, Miss Lori, for sharing the recipe and reminiscing about the Waltons. I watched the series until the final episode. I cried when Will Geer who played Grandpa, passed on. Those were such wonderful shows.

The Waltons have been my favorite 😍 Ive watched the reruns so many times. Especially in the times we are in now. It just comforts me so much. Your cake sounds so good😊
I'm 42 and I grew up on the waltons, I loved the show. I can remember when I was little and my brother was still at home some times when we started to go to bed we'd all tell each other good night. I was quiet for a moment and I would yell out " good night John boy lol and we'd tell each other good night the way they did on the show. I too grew up on Hee Haw, Dukes of hazzard, Dynasty, Gilligan's island those were the best old days. What I'd give to have them back and have my mom, daddy, sister, brother and my grandparents back. At least I can dream of being back in my old home with them.
You are so good at taking me back to my childhood! Being originally from Virginia it really takes me home! My mom always made an applesauce cake and a hermit cake at Thanksgiving and Christmas! The house always had the most incredible fragrances of the various spices. Mom actually put just a tidge of bourbon in her applesauce cake. The alcohol would cook off but the flavor was delicious! Thanks for another warm jog to my memory!!!
My mom made hermit cookies -- and caramel squares - at Christmas. I don't even bother trying caramel squares outside of what my mom made. Special enough I might get industrious this fall and try making her recipe. Definitely will be making the hermits. They're a staple.
I remember thinking how nice it must’ve been to have a momma and grandparents and all those siblings. Every Saturday I looked forward to watching that show.
My grandmother (from Cherry Valley, AR) always made this cake but added candy orange slices. She made it in a bundt pan too. It always reminds me of her and of Christmas!
I'm so happy to see you here with new recipe. Yes The waltons. I was a teenager when it was aired. I absolutely loved the program my grandmother lived through the depression and she could relate to everything. We actually need more shows like the Walton's so to teach young people. Good to get back to basics.
The Walton's were always a big part of my childhood. Mom loved and my grandmother loved it even more than that. Such a great show with so many lessons that are real and very relevant for today. Thank you so much!
I love seeing this recipe. I remember when she talked about it, and I believe Grandma snuck in some of the recipe. This was such a fun one to watch. Thanks!
Mary ellen has youtube channel,,,judy norton,,of course real name...she tells alot about what went into making walton's...and there is a walton's museum,,I think in virginia...you proably already know this ...in one video,,she tells about what they ate on show...she even answered my comment...I'll find the name of channel...I always feel at home watching your videos....y'all do remind me of modern day,,but old fashioned family,,that fees like walton's mountain.🌼🌼🌼🙂🤗💖
The Waltons were my favorite as well. I have most of the DVD series. I loved hearing that screen door slam. I wanted to live with them, too, and had a crush on John Boy. A few weeks ago, Mary Ellen (Judy Norton) made this cake on her channel. It included "the recipe" from the Baldwin sisters. Corinne I think was a great aunt or something who lived in a cabin in the woods and she painted the horse buggy for the family. Someday I want to go to the Walton reunion at the Walton museum in VA. Thank you for making this.
That looks yummy. Guess I need to add applesauce to my grocery list. Thank you for sharing this and all of your other videos. BTW your meatloaf was wonderful. My 91 yr old dad said it tasted just like his grannie's.
My absolutely favorite show! It was a show filled with family values. As a child, my parents dictated what was on the tv for us to watch!! Olivia and JohnBoy were my favorites. Ty so much for the Applesauce Cake recipe.
My grandma had this recipe since the depression too! The only difference is we don't include eggs. I think there was a shortage at the time. It's my all time favorite cake.
This just showed up in my feed, likely because I'm a big Walton's fan as well. I make this cake every year around Christmas. Not sure if someone already answered this, but the "Jane" in "Jane's Whiskey Frosting" is Earl Hamner Jr's wife Jane. The original recipe was printed in his novella "The Homecoming".
Thank you Mrs. Lori!! It's as if you read my heart❤. A week or two ago I watched a Walton's episode. John boy was out on one of his travels, and Olivia wanted to make sure she had an applesauce cake for him when he came back home. I searched through my OLD church and community cookbooks for a recipe. They varied so much I gave up, but I had a delightful afternoon reading. I am going to give your recipe a try. Thanks again!
I love the Walton’s. My best friend and I went to Schuyler Va to see the home of Earl Hammer and to visit to Walton’s museum. It was so great and the drive through the Shenandoah valley was beautiful. I encourage all Walton fans to go visit. The gift shop there had copies of this applesauce cake and I have it in my China cabinet.
I saw Ms Judy Norton ( Mary Ellen) make this Apple Sauce Cake on her channel "Behind The Scene of The Waltons" a couple of weeks ago. So yummy. I love the old Waltons reruns. Thank you Ms Lori for sharing this too. As soon as my broken arm gets better I will definitely be making this. May God bless and keep you both.
Miss Lori ---so happy you have made this... I have been watching The Homecoming every year for the holidays since the year it came out. That is such a wonderful holiday movie. Always wanted to have this cake! The Waltons was always watched in our house!
Hello Ms. Lori and Mr. Brown. The Walton's hold fond memories for me as a young girl. My Grandmother loved John Boy. She would always say, He's such a handsome young man. Those shows need to come back on TV.
Well…. Cannot get it to stream… but KNOW I’m going to love this!!!!! Such a fan of that beautiful series. I was married in ‘76 (of course the hubs is named John) - had 8 kids and couldn’t wait to get the long dining table with benches for the kids. Thanks for posting…. Looking forward to this 😊👍🏻. Prayers continue for dear Miss Vickie and her family.
I have not made an applesauce cake in years. Your recipe is a lot like the one I have from my grandmother, minus the whiskey lol. I will have to try making one again. It used to be a Christmas tradition growing up. Someone always brought the applesauce cake :)
In the original Walton movie, the "Homecoming", with Patficia Neal, she talks about making her applesauce cake. It takes place on Christmas eve, and that was the special Christmas cake. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time. I watch it every year!
Hi Miss Lori, I recently made a purchase of the Hoosier Farm Products. Thank you for showing them to us during your Cinnamon roll video. Their products are Amazing! Id never heard of Powdered Butter..or Powdered Heavy cream or even sour cream. I was excited to receive my packages. We love ya sister. Stay strong..stay true. Sending you hugs. Blessings from S.Central MO❤🌻
To this day, I still have vivid dreams about The Walton's house. I am the youngest of 8 kids. We would all do the goodnight call to each other. I miss those days. But I have been watching your videos and I just gotta say that I want to come hang out at your house !!! 😊 God bless you for keeping the old ways and recipes alive.♥️

Thank you Miss Lori. Confession time. I've been making your prune spice cake with applesauce. I love the walnuts and raisins in this one! Love and blessings! 💜
Me and my girls love watching the Walton’s ❤️ one of my favorite episodes is when grandma gets jealous of that statue that grandpa wins from a raffle ticket 🤣
If Mr. Brown ever wants to retire from being the taste tester, I want the job!! I loved the Walton's! I always said my family is like the Walton's So I am very blessed. My prayers are going up for all in need, and for those that can't. Have a great week!
I lived the same type of life but with more animals than they had. Mom & us kids lived with Grandma & Grandpa. And a few blocks away my Great Grandparents had their farm too. We farmed both farms with a small 35 h.p. tractor. Fantastic childhood.
I grew up watching the show… And I still do given the opportunity. I too wanted a slice of that apple sauce cake. Now that I'm 60 I'm gonna make one for me.!
I grew up watching The Waltons and many years later I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Waite and Ms. Learned while they were here to do a play together called Love Letters not long before Mr. Waite died. They were both very kind and gracious with their time and comments and it will always remain a highlight of my life.
I love the Waltons I watch it regularly applesauce cake man my grandmother made it often delicious 😋 my friend and prayers for miss Vicki 🙏 ❤ for her missing daughter my heart bleeds for her
The Walton's was a favorite of my mother and we had everything finished on Thursday night so we could watch the show. My husband and I lived south of Schuyler, Virginia when he preached in Chatham, VA. The Hamner house is located between Altavista and Charlottesville, VA. A little girl with red, who is grown now, went to church camp when we worked there. Her name was Skyler Hamner and I wondered if she was a part of the Earl Hamner family. This cooking episode brings back good memories of my momma and serving the Lord in Southside, VA.
Was always and still is my favorite TV show. I actually still watch when I can at 12 noon Monday thru Friday. We own every DVD. Made. I always dreamed of living in that house. They have a bed and breakfast there and hope to visit. Thanks for sharing!
Love your home and your relationship with each other (and the Lord!) and your recipes. And yes, love the Waltons! That and the Andy Griffith Show are favorites. We definitely need more porch-sitting. God bless and thank you.
Wish I were your neighbor . You are living the life I always dreamed of with the front porch. I was born and raised in Los Angeles but was a country gal at heart. Love and Blessings. Going to make the cake right now.
That simple, profound statement, "Keep your eyes to the Lord... It's gonna be ok." brought me to tears. I needed that more than you know. Thank you, and His blessings to you.
Oh yes Miss Lori, we loved watching the Waltons when we were growing up and we still love watching them today. I to would have loved to lived there with them on Waltons Mountain. I would say good night John Boy & Mary Ellen lol That cake looks delicious 😋 and I know it is with you making it. 😇🙏🏻❤️👍🏻🙌🏻😋😋😋😋😋😋 GOD BLESS YALL
We eat Olivia Walton's applesauce cake at least twice a month, usually for breakfast. Visiting "Walton's Mountain" a few years ago was a highlight of my life. It did not disappoint!
I just loved the Walton's show and watched it growing up along with Hee Haw and Andy Griffin. This recipe looks delicious I believe the two sisters were called the "Baldwin Sisters" and the Grampa Walton called the whiskey the recipe.
Miss Lori, I love this cake and your fond memories watching the Walton in your childhood me to, to all of it. God Bless you and Mr. Brown the great fly killer.
My grandmother made an applesauce cake at Christmas and she put chopped an apple and put in hers! It was so good and the house smelled wonderful!! I miss those Christmases when we all sat around her table and ate together. It’s like the front porch sitting. We need more of that🙏🏼💗🙏🏼

We moved from Illinois to Norfolk Virginia when I was 7. And I used to watch the Waltons with my mom all the time. And I remember asking her if we could go to Walton's Mountain.
This recipe is real similar to the grooms cake I made for my wedding 52 years ago! Made it in a sheet pan cut it in little squares and wrapped it in foil and tied with a ribbon.. Thanks for the memorys..
I love The Waltons too I couldn't wait to Thursday night roll around so me and my mom sit front TV and watch The Waltons and always say I wish I had a family like that but he's always there for each other and help him one another and the food that they fixed looks so good homie and inviting God bless you Miss Lori and Mr Brown I like your measuring cups and your bowls that you use on your show
Miss Lorie you and your husband really touch my heart,so down to earth and I pray GOD,s blessings over yall and family. Yall were raised like I was. To work hard and appreciate all the Lord has given yall.
I loved all those shows. I was born in 1963. I loved the house. For awhile we had rotary phone and 3 tv channels and the tv antenna and a record player. My grandma Dad’s mom had a tv with radio and record player and I sure thought we needed that tv. Cake looks delicious, Ps Dragnet was my all time favorite tv show and still us.
I hope you got to watch it
@@WhippoorwillHoller oh yes! It was great 😊👍🏻
I believe Judy Norton said Jane was Earl Hamner's wife. She made this recipe just the other day. The Walton's are my favorite also.
I have not made an applesauce cake in years. Your recipe is a lot like the one I have from my grandmother, minus the whiskey lol. I will have to try making one again. It used to be a Christmas tradition growing up. Someone always brought the applesauce cake :)
I am 73 and I still watch the reruns. I lived a life like the Waltons and it takes me back to that simple and fun life. A wonderful time in that life.
Looks so good I have homemade applesauce and black walnuts in the freezer. Going to make this very soon.
In the original Walton movie, the "Homecoming", with Patficia Neal, she talks about making her applesauce cake. It takes place on Christmas eve, and that was the special Christmas cake. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time. I watch it every year!
Hi Miss Lori,

My Favorite show. I watch it every day. Comes on at 11:00 AM lunch and Walton's.
I lived the same type of life but with more animals than they had. Mom & us kids lived with Grandma & Grandpa. And a few blocks away my Great Grandparents had their farm too. We farmed both farms with a small 35 h.p. tractor. Fantastic childhood.
I still watch the Waltons. I love it and like yourself I also wish I could have lived in that big old house. I want to live in yours. Love you guys,
I grew up watching the show… And I still do given the opportunity.
How wonderful

I was an only child so I always wanted a family like the Waltons lol. I always gravitated to large families. Loved playing with all of those kids. ❤️
