One of my favourite episode is S2 E7: The Prize. Olivia made "Aunt Polly's" cake, later Grandma let Olivia in on the secret that "Cousin Polly had whiskey in her icing, rye whiskey" which Olivia and Grandma found in the sock draw of Zeb. It was decorated with fresh raspberries.

I remember with a chuckle when Grandma was showing Erin how to bake a cake in the kitchen and Grandma reveled the "secret" to Erin. Erin shouted "GRANDMA"!!!! Grandma quickly raised her finger to her lips to still Erin from saying anything more. That whole scene was so funny. Thanks for the memories. Loved that show.

Ended up getting a new house with a kitchen that needed updating - so redid this one this year. The cutting board was a lovely house warming gift from my brother and his wife :). It was fun watching you prepare Olivia's Applesauce Cake. I have always wondered about its recipe and how good it tastes. Maybe someday I will try making it, too. I bake an Applesauce Cake for every Christmas, but I use a recipe from the early 80s that's in my Betty Crocker cookbook. It doesn't require separate bowls or sifting or any of the extra steps so many cake recipes call for. All of the ingredients are put into a bowl and a mixer is used to mix it together. I don't frost the cake, but instead just sift some confectioner's sugar over the top once it's cooled. Thank you so much for sharing this enjoyable video. I loved it.

This one brought back some good memories; I grew up in the mountains of southwest Virginia, and I can remember a bit of competitiveness around applesauce and fresh apple cake recipes/results. My own grandmother took real pride in her applesauce cakes and they were a holiday tradition for us and her neighbors - she started baking multiple cakes in October for the holidays and keep them in a deep freezer until a few days before needed. She always said that black walnuts (gathered, hulled, and shelled by my grandad) were the secret to a great cake.

I read the book in the early 70's and many times since so have had the recipe a long time. Finally made it a year ago with my first ever homemade applesauce. First thoughts were that some things are better to imagine. Thinking more we are spoiled today with ingredients and fine deserts. In this recipe I could taste a simpler time, that Christmas of 'The Homecoming' and the day I picked the apples and made the sauce. I'll make it again.

Here’s a recipe you may like to make.
    Black Russian cake - copy
    1 box yellow cake mix
    1/2 cup sugar
    3-4 eggs
    1 cup oil
6 oz box instant choc pudding
    3/4 cup water
    1/4 cup Kaluha
    1/4 cup vodka
Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour a 10 inch bunt cake pan. Set aside. Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl on low speed for 1 minute. Beat at medium speed for 4 minutes. Pour into pan and bake 45-70 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Note: with 4 eggs in batter , the cake rises so it may burn. Watch carefully and cover with foil towards end of baking if it seems top is getting too brown.
Cool 10 minutes in pan, pierce and glaze.
    Glaze
    1/3 cup powdered sugar
    1/3 cup kahlua
In a small saucepan cook the sugar and kahlua long enough to melt sugar and cook out alcohol. Pour over warm cake.
The original recipe called for glaze:
    1/2 cup powdered sugar
    1/4 cup kahlua
Bake the cake for about 40-60 minutes. Keep an eye on it around 40 minutes to see if it’s done yet.

      * You can use vanilla pudding for a White Russian version. Sometimes I’d use chocolate cake mix with the chocolate pudding.
Funny story: a friend of mine is a church going woman and never had alcohol. She had a slice of the cake and thought she was drunk. It was so funny watching her reactions. She didn’t realize that the alcohol baked/cooked out.

Watching "The Homecoming" was a Christmas tradition in my house growing up. When I was in my early teens I decided to make an applesauce cake one holiday season. It's such a delicious, old-timey, cozy treat that it became a tradition in our family and was a particular favorite of my late mother. My sister asked me a few years ago how applesauce cake became a tradition in our family, as I presented the annual applesauce cake at a holiday gathering, and I relayed the story that it was a tradition we had adopted from the Walton's. Even though I am a recovering alcoholic, a little bourbon still finds it's way into the recipe because it's the "secret ingredient" and the cake doesn't taste as good without it. Loved this cooking segment, Judy. I hope you will do more. Maybe the strawberry preserves from the county fair episode? LOL.

I just finished rewatching the entire Walton's series , I had forgotten how good the show was. I have great memories of lying in front of the TV on the floor watching when it originally aired. I was in the floor because every single family member watched and there was no where left to sit. We popped popcorn and made fudge before the show started. Those were the good old days. Love your show, just found it and thanks for the recipe, been looking for it.
