It was fun watching you prepare Olivia's Applesauce Cake. I have always wondered about its recipe and how good it tastes. Maybe someday I will try making it, too. I bake an Applesauce Cake for every Christmas, but I use a recipe from the early 80s that's in my Betty Crocker cookbook. It doesn't require separate bowls or sifting or any of the extra steps so many cake recipes call for. All of the ingredients are put into a bowl and a mixer is used to mix it together. I don't frost the cake, but instead just sift some confectioner's sugar over the top once it's cooled. Thank you so much for sharing this enjoyable video. I loved it.
I've made this cake for the past several years for Christmas. I substitute dried cranberries for the raisons. We also watch the homecoming every year. It's a Christmas tradition.
This one brought back some good memories; I grew up in the mountains of southwest Virginia, and I can remember a bit of competitiveness around applesauce and fresh apple cake recipes/results. My own grandmother took real pride in her applesauce cakes and they were a holiday tradition for us and her neighbors - she started baking multiple cakes in October for the holidays and keep them in a deep freezer until a few days before needed. She always said that black walnuts (gathered, hulled, and shelled by my grandad) were the secret to a great cake.

Here’s a recipe you may like to make. Black Russian cake - copy 1 box yellow cake mix 1/2 cup sugar 3-4 eggs 1 cup oil 6 oz box instant choc pudding 3/4 cup water 1/4 cup Kaluha 1/4 cup vodka Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour a 10 inch bunt cake pan. Set aside. Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl on low speed for 1 minute. Beat at medium speed for 4 minutes. Pour into pan and bake 45-70 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Note: with 4 eggs in batter , the cake rises so it may burn. Watch carefully and cover with foil towards end of baking if it seems top is getting too brown. Cool 10 minutes in pan, pierce and glaze. Glaze 1/3 cup powdered sugar 1/3 cup kahlua In a small saucepan cook the sugar and kahlua long enough to melt sugar and cook out alcohol. Pour over warm cake. The original recipe called for glaze: 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1/4 cup kahlua Bake the cake for about 40-60 minutes. Keep an eye on it around 40 minutes to see if it’s done yet.
* You can use vanilla pudding for a White Russian version. Sometimes I’d use chocolate cake mix with the chocolate pudding. Funny story: a friend of mine is a church going woman and never had alcohol. She had a slice of the cake and thought she was drunk. It was so funny watching her reactions. She didn’t realize that the alcohol baked/cooked out.
Greetings from Boston! Loved the Waltons growing up. I’m a granny now and will be making Olivia’s applesauce cake for the fall. You’re beautiful as ever!
Watching "The Homecoming" was a Christmas tradition in my house growing up. When I was in my early teens I decided to make an applesauce cake one holiday season. It's such a delicious, old-timey, cozy treat that it became a tradition in our family and was a particular favorite of my late mother. My sister asked me a few years ago how applesauce cake became a tradition in our family, as I presented the annual applesauce cake at a holiday gathering, and I relayed the story that it was a tradition we had adopted from the Walton's. Even though I am a recovering alcoholic, a little bourbon still finds it's way into the recipe because it's the "secret ingredient" and the cake doesn't taste as good without it. Loved this cooking segment, Judy. I hope you will do more. Maybe the strawberry preserves from the county fair episode? LOL.
this is a wonderful surprise change of pace. it's good to see another side of you. hows about a video of you riding the horse or working out or whatever else you do. i know i speak for every one of us who are more interested in Judy than Mary Ellen.

Bake the cake for about 40-60 minutes.
Thanks for this special recipe! I'll have to try it! 🙂
Sounds yummy. Thanks.
Greetings from Boston!
Loved the Waltons growing up.
I’m a granny now and will be making Olivia’s applesauce cake for the fall.
You’re beautiful as ever!
Wonderful!!
How fun! You’ll have to try the cake with fresh raspberries that Olivia entered at the fair and won $5. Thank you and enjoy the cake.
I have not seen a recipe for that one.
Love it! Please more cooking!
Happy to hear that.
Fun segment! Really like the decor of your kitchen too. Would love to see the occasional Cooking with Judy segment!
Happy to hear that.
LOL.
Glad you enjoyed this.
this is a wonderful surprise change of pace. it's good to see another side of you. hows about a video of you riding the horse or working out or whatever else you do. i know i speak for every one of us who are more interested in Judy than Mary Ellen.
That's a wonderful idea! I would love to see the horses and learn about riding! 🧡🐎
@@hollyavillella554 thanks. let's hope judy thinks so too.
Thank you for the interest. Perhaps something for the future.
@@judynorton2598 that would be great. I love The Waltons as much as the next guy, but maybe let's talk about something else sometimes. There's more to Judy Norton than The Waltons.
Enjoyed watching you make Olivia’s cake.nThe kitchen scenes where my favorite!💕🙏🍰

Wonderful.
I made this cake following the directions in the back of the Homecoming book .
My family loved it!
I’ve made it and we loved it. I’ll have to try the frosting. The salt brings out flavors 😋
Thank you for sharing from the kitchen Judy 😊
Good to know. Thanks!
Loved the idea of you making the cake following the actual recipe. Congrats on the channel.
Thanks Judy,
Applesauce cake is one of my favorite. You can make an easier version by using a spice cake mix and just use applesauce instead of water. Take care, stay safe and GOD BLESS.
Cool. Thanks :)
Love this! Thank you Judy 😊
Wonderful.
You may not have made this cake before, but I can tell you are a natural in the kitchen as you know what you are doing. I'm sending this to my Mom as I am a fish out of water in the kitchen. But what I do know is video production and this is very professional editing & overall production.
I could tell too. She did a great job!!!
Thank you so much.
That was enjoyable to watch. Just wish I was there for a piece. Don't be afraid to do more of the same Judy.

So glad.
Me too! My grandmother used to soak it in whiskey for Christmas!!
This looks FABULOUS! I can't wait to make this.
Wonderful.
Love it
I just finished rewatching the entire Walton's series , I had forgotten how good the show was. I have great memories of lying in front of the TV on the floor watching when it originally aired. I was in the floor because every single family member watched and there was no where left to sit. We popped popcorn and made fudge before the show started. Those were the good old days. Love your show, just found it and thanks for the recipe, been looking for it.
Glad you have found my channel. Welcome! So happy to hear you have enjoyed the show over the years.
Well that was fun. Enjoyed watching you make that cake which looked and sounded delicious. I'm going to have to find that book by Earl Hamner to get the recipe and read the book. I know I can right down the recipe from your video but would also like to see the book.
$$$$$ 😆 😆
I wrote out the recipe in the video description on my channel for this video. So you can grab it easily from there.
@@judynorton2598 Thanks Judy. When I watched the video, I was able to pause it and write it down.
Oh my goodness. This was precious!!! I just got a hold of a copy of the book recently. I had to see the recipe in the back just now. I will HAVE to make this for my family. Thanks to your inspiration, my family will believe I’ve gone overboard on my LOVE for anything The Waltons! 🍎🥧🏡🥰💞
Hi AnneMarie! Would you please let us know the title of the book? If it’s not in print, maybe I can look on eBay! Thanks in advance for your help. Have a great day!

@@christinaelliott8565 I love stew in winter . Yum
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
I remember the episode "The Air Mail Man" where it was Olivia's birthday and Mary Ellen, Erin and Elizabeth were helping Grandma make a birthday cake. You and Erin couldn't remember if you had put the baking soda in, Grandma had just about had it with you guys! This video immediately made me think of that scene. Thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories!
lol - that’s right! The pitfalls of too many cooks in the kitchen :)
I always love all the videos about Walton life but this one was so special. The cake looked delicious and I will definitely be having a go at making my own! More cooking vids please !
Happy to hear that.
