Sophie is my dog and she is 11 years old. She is an AKC Grand Champion. She is the joy of our life. She was bred by Huntcrest Cavaliers a little north of Chicago. I received her at 12 weeks old and got her Grand Champion title. Thank you Leslie for such a wonderful dog. She deserves the best and Susanne is certainly the best groomer ever. She LOVES going to Susanne every month for her SPA day. Susanne is so gentle and kind and does the grooming techniques that most groomers just don’t know how to do. She looks good enough to go into the show ring. I am so grateful to find such a great, professional groomer who LOVES THE WORK AND THE DOGS.

You share so much good information about the structure of the Cav and how the grooming should be done to show off the lovely angles of the body and enhance the best features of the head and neck. I have all the tools and products needed to achieve grooming success and now, with this wonderful video, I think I will get a much better result! Thank you so much. I’m a fan😊!

You are AMAZING! I purchased all the tools you linked to. I got everything except the fine-tooth deshedding rake and the horse-thing (waiting for them to arrive). I started with the large deshedding rake today and it worked just as you illustrated. SO much hair came out. I then did the carding knife. When my girl stood up, it looked 2-3 inches were taken off each side of her hips! She had become SO WOOLY, and I thought she needed a haircut. So glad I found your video - she didn’t need a haircut! She just needed all that hair removed, that I didn’t realize was apparently sitting in her coat (except for the horrible shedding - that may’ve been a sign). THANK YOU so much!!!!!!!!

Hi Mairin, I'm in Aus too, you will be lucky to find a carding tool in a pet shop. There are a few Aus groomer supplies online stores that you can pick up a carding knife quite cheap. Most will very happily help you over the phone as well. I think there is great tendency here to shave off longer coats in summer, which doesn't necessarily help the dog, as even the shortest haired dogs are panting to cool down (coz people- DOGS DON'T SWEAT!!!) carding out this dead hair will. Good luck!

This is a WONDERFUL video and just confirms my belief that not all groomers know how to groom a cavalier!! If you are still answering questions, I have a 2 yr old tricolor cav with very similar color patterns to the puppy in the video but where brown, my puppy is black. Do you recommend any products or techniques for brightening the white? I feel as a city dog and hiking regularly, his white paws and leg feathers never get quite white anymore even after a good bath. I'd love something to help. Thank you again!

Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I have had no luck finding anyone I feel confident about for grooming my cavalier so decided to try and learn on my own. The last groomer shaved her coat very short! As I've done some research, I find that the AKC breed club says they are a single coated dog yet many other sites say that they are double-coated. And so I'm wondering whether her coat is permanently ruined due to being shaved to about an inch in length. Or can I restore it by following your tips here in this video?

Hi! Thank you so much for this super informative, wonderful video. I've been grooming for 10 years, & I'm surprised at how limited the knowledge is amongst groomers about hand-stripping, & carding.. I have a tri-color Cavalier request that has come to me for years.. She always comes in with such a strange, inconsistent, whispy coat. The white hairs are always soft & frizzy, the black "gaurd hairs" hairs are always stringy. I had a feeling that it was carding that she needed.. & i try to execute that each time she comes in to me. Unfortunately, i cannot convince the owner to bring her in for more regular grooming 🫤 She will come in once every 4 months... So, no wonder i just can't keep up with it.
Also; i love your handling-techniques with the dog.. Your confidence & your professionalism.

Hello. Thank you sooooo much for this video! I have an 18 month old Cavalier and it seemed I was missing something with regards to grooming as I did not want to take her to a groomer or clip her like other Cavs I've seen. I want her to look like a champion! I'm so happy to see this video. Your video is the first video that has answered questions that I had. I brush my dog every day but watched her coat change as she got older. I purchased the tools from your website and have been carding my dog like you demonstrate. What a difference!!! She's starting to look like she's supposed to and not the big square fluff she was turning into. I have a couple of questions: Can you over card the dog? Also, do you trim whiskers or hair around the eyes? I have watched this video a dozen times and I seem something different every time. I have also watched some of your other grooming videos because I am learning from them as well. Great content!!!!! THANK YOU!!! This video has made a difference!!!

Often they want to even clip feathery hair off back of legs, shorten her pretty ears etc! I end up trying to groom her myself. I’m very used to grooming my Poms but if I get a Cav I want to use the best grooming tools for my new dog. Is there a list of the tools you demonstrate in your video? I haven’t found it but l perhaps I missed it. I already have a great grooming kit plus cordless grooming electric razor. My main question is the type of brush you used to shampoo my dog and the best comb to use. I don’t think I need a slicker like I use on my Poms but I can’t tell what type of combs you use? I have several types of combs first being a long comb that has teeth that are close and other end wider teeth. I have a comb that also will get 2 ends & a comb that has multi layers to get a close comb. However it looks like you use a longer type of comb that is easy to use on a larger , long haired dog then a Pom but I can’t see it know the name of such a comb. I any to have my tools ready and your video is wonderful to learn to how to groom my new breed of dog. Cavalier appear to make the perfect therapy dog. I’m also used to training service dogs as I have a son with disabilities and have been taught by a professional trainer on the best way to train a service dog. I just lost my best friend, a Pom , that passed away suddenly due to trachea problems. Another reason to look into Caviller’s. I realize Cavalier’s may have heart problems as well as joint problems. The joint issues I’m used to have a therapy dog before my Pom’s that happened to be a long haired Chihuahua ( not the typical breed for a therapy dog so I don’t recommend a Chihuahua as a therapy dog in case one may be thinking about this breed. He was simply a very unusual and amazingly friendly Chihuahua. Not a common trait either in a Chihuahua breed and I groomed him too. A Cavalier appears to have a bit different type of tools that work best on their coats. I’m almost ready just want to get the correct grooming tools. Your video us extremely helpful to understand the grooming process fir a Caviller plus how to have a dog thst truly loves attention. A well groomed dog and personality is vital when bringing a service dog into a doctors office, it’s the thing that helps acceptance and opens doors for therapy dogs. Thanks in advance for telling me where yo find the tools you used. 💕

This is such a great video - what age do you recommend starting the carding? My puppy is 10 months, should I already be doing this? or after her full coat is grown in?

I would say 6 months old is a good time to start for a thick coat.

Suzanne I forgot to ask if there is a place for using a slicker brush as part of grooming a cavalier? Is there a certain one to buy? Thanks again for such a valuable video.

Just today saw a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles, but in such poor health/ coat condition, I couldn't look much, other than I noticed it needed a good bath, clean out the eye debris, maybe some trimming. It would have been lovely dog but I don't know it nor the owner so I couldn't suggest/say anything 😥
Love the addition of the blogs to the videos, excellent followup👍

It’s hard when you truly enjoy animal care and you have to tiptoe around people who have not learned the joy of caring for your animals.

Questions: How often do you recommend washing a cav? Do you use any hairdryer and what stand do you put the hairdryer on?

Every 3 weeks. I use a stand dryer made for dogs. You can buy a holder for your dryer at tableworks.com

    Great video & gorgeous customer!
Is a Carding tool similar to one of those tools that claim to be able to get knots/mattes out? I'd never use one of those tools to get a knot out, however, could one of those work as a makeshift carding tool if it's just run through the hair around the neck & down the back etc? It would work to thin the hair, but would it thin out 'The Right Hair'?
Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated! I groom my CKCS at home & have been looking for the carding tool for a long time as her coat needs it badly but forgot the name; plus it seems this tool goes under different names depending on the shop.
One more question... What kind of Pumice Stone is the best to use, is there a kind specific for dog grooming, or would one of the generic stones found in a typical beauty store, Walgreens or CVS do the job correctly & safely?
    Thank you! 🌟

Hi. My favorite tools are listed in this blog. The pumice for feet and such sold at the drug store Seem to be ineffective for this purpose. groomingsafer.com/tools-link-blogs-by-breed/f/the-best-tools-for-grooming-a-cavalier-king-charles-spaniel?blogcategory=Cavalier+King+Charles

Thank you! Why people would cut or shave a Spaniel's coat is beyond me, no good, must be left natural & keep up on the grooming. Was very glad to see your video explaining this.
I have a rake, but the carding blade & pumice stone will be much better for the coat in the long run & can do more detailed contouring.
Ok good to know abt the pumice stone. Going to check the list.🙏🙂

Also, pumice stones are usually very hard. I am concerned about using it around the face. Is there a particular brand/kind of pumice stone you use?

    • @grandestyledoggrooming

I don't use it around the eyes. You can break it into a smaller piece for small areas like the cheeks. groomingsafer.com/tools-link-blogs-by-breed/f/the-best-tools-for-grooming-a-cavalier-king-charles-spaniel

Depending on the dog’s individual coat, it may be enough. If the coat is lying fairly flat, it should be fine.

I am left handed, so need a left handed stripping knife. Are you using a fine, medium, or coarse blade? (I have and show cavaliers).

    • @grandestyledoggrooming
      @grandestyledoggrooming  Год назад +1

I am using the Jodi Murphy carding knife. One side is fine, the other medium. For carding I use mostly the fine, unless the coat dictates by its thickness or how course it is that I should use the medium.
