Sophie is my dog and she is 11 years old. She is an AKC Grand Champion. She is the joy of our life. She was bred by Huntcrest Cavaliers a little north of Chicago. I received her at 12 weeks old and got her Grand Champion title. Thank you Leslie for such a wonderful dog. She deserves the best and Susanne is certainly the best groomer ever. She LOVES going to Susanne every month for her SPA day. Susanne is so gentle and kind and does the grooming techniques that most groomers just don’t know how to do. She looks good enough to go into the show ring. I am so grateful to find such a great, professional groomer who LOVES THE WORK AND THE DOGS.
Your little girl is beautiful! I was looking for a Cavalier grooming tip for grooming our guy ourselves. Suzanne is awesome, I would love to have her as "our" groomer. You precious is a beauty!
You are AMAZING! I purchased all the tools you linked to. I got everything except the fine-tooth deshedding rake and the horse-thing (waiting for them to arrive). I started with the large deshedding rake today and it worked just as you illustrated. SO much hair came out. I then did the carding knife. When my girl stood up, it looked 2-3 inches were taken off each side of her hips! She had become SO WOOLY, and I thought she needed a haircut. So glad I found your video - she didn’t need a haircut! She just needed all that hair removed, that I didn’t realize was apparently sitting in her coat (except for the horrible shedding - that may’ve been a sign). THANK YOU so much!!!!!!!!
I wish I had seen this video before I had my first Cavalier. I obviously did a lot of grooming incorrectly. When I adopt my next Cavalier, I will review this video again so I purchase the right grooming equipment. Very educational. Thank you so much.
I wish I would have seen this video 15 years ago with my cavalier! So informative, thank you for sharing! I hope to get another cavalier, and when I do, I’ll come back to this video and groom him like this!
Oh my goodness, Suzanne! I have been waiting at least 10 years for a Cavalier grooming video like you have provided us! You share so much good information about the structure of the Cav and how the grooming should be done to show off the lovely angles of the body and enhance the best features of the head and neck. I have all the tools and products needed to achieve grooming success and now, with this wonderful video, I think I will get a much better result! Thank you so much. I’m a fan😊!
Thank you so much for all this grooming info. I am a 1st time Cavalier owner.I have been bathing her and grooming her myself. She is 3 years old and this info is very helpful.
The BEST cavalier grooming video out there, hands down! And the only proper one I have seen! Thank you for all the details and tips. My cavs look and feel so much better thanks to your recommendations and tool links! Can’t thank you enough!! 🐶🐶

I have the hardest time with the hip area and the neck and shoulder. Hope it gets better! I watch this video a lot and recommend it a lot! It’s been sooooooo helpful!!
I’m so grateful to you for showing us so and calmly and clearly, how to manage these flat coated shedding breeds at home. Can’t wait to try this on my Cavalier when she’s got her full coat. 😊
Thank you so much for sharing. You're one of the only cavalier grooming videos on RUclips that doesn't shave their coats and does a proper groom for this breed. I truly appreciate your expertise.
Thank you for a fantastic video. I enjoyed the explanation for using certain techniques or products. The owners of Sophie are so lucky to have such a skilled groomer. I am taking your advice and will do some home care for my cavalier. The list of products was very helpful too.
Hello! I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. We live in Russia. And we have few groomers who perform really good grooming in accordance with the breed standard. Thanks for the video, very useful
I am now 100% hooked on cavaliers! I adopted a 15 month old from a rescue. She turned out to be an absolute joy filled little girl! Too happy. . .consistently! Then I found a breeder within an 11 hour drive. . .I now own 3 of her kids! Talk about a lovely breed. I groomed English Springer spaniels, my own and rescues, for over 20 years. Now, I am learning how to properly groom a cavalier. This video is by far the best one I have watched. . . The tips you give point out how much you care for the dog. I have purchased several items that were recommended. THANK YOU for this video!!❤
Wonderful video. Wow, learned so much more about grooming our two pups 🐶, our male is also a Blenheim. Did not know about the Carding tool or pumice stone. Thanks, we are Cavy lovers

Wow! I am impressed with your grooming skills. We have a black and tan male Cavalier and he gets a once a month bath and brush at the groomers and has a lot of fur, too. Now I know why he sheds all year long. I can do the carding on my sweet Churchill. My husband and I love black and tan Cavaliers.
Lol I can't decide which I love the best, one day it's the Blenheim, the next it's the tricolour, 2 days later it's the ruby.. I think I just love Cavs.. Or maybe it's the old scent-hound adage also applies? -that "No good hound is ever a bad colour"!
This video is so helpful! I have a mutt that we guess is part spaniel and dachshund. She’s having some of the issues you described. Now I know how to take care of her coat. Thank you so much!
Wish I lived near you. Such a patient little Cavi. My 3 year old has a curly coat, and thick, which is tough here in Australian heat. I will go to the pet store straight away and get a carding tool etc. I am old but I will take on the challenge! Thank you for such a good video.
Hi Mairin, I'm in Aus too, you will be lucky to find a carding tool in a pet shop. There are a few Aus groomer supplies online stores that you can pick up a carding knife quite cheap. Most will very happily help you over the phone as well. I think there is great tendency here to shave off longer coats in summer, which doesn't necessarily help the dog, as even the shortest haired dogs are panting to cool down (coz people- DOGS DON'T SWEAT!!!) carding out this dead hair will. Good luck!
Watched your channel 1st time today. Saved and Subscribed! I love how you explain what and WHY you do everything. I don’t live near a good groomer. They just want to cut and clip. Often they want to even clip feathery hair off back of legs, shorten her pretty ears etc! I end up trying to groom her myself. She’s a beautiful tricolor with silky straight hair so that 15:13 helps some but your tips on getting the undercoat out are great, will look for the tools. Thanks for your help!

Hi! Thank you so much for this super informative, wonderful video. I've been grooming for 10 years, & I'm surprised at how limited the knowledge is amongst groomers about hand-stripping, & carding.. I have a tri-color Cavalier request that has come to me for years.. She always comes in with such a strange, inconsistent, whispy coat. The white hairs are always soft & frizzy, the black "gaurd hairs" hairs are always stringy. I had a feeling that it was carding that she needed.. & i try to execute that each time she comes in to me. Unfortunately, i cannot convince the owner to bring her in for more regular grooming 🫤 She will come in once every 4 months... So, no wonder i just can't keep up with it. Also; i love your handling-techniques with the dog.. Your confidence & your professionalism.
That is why I state that it is the pet parent's responsibility to learn how to maintain flat coats. It is impossible for a groomer to accomplish a proper groom every 4 months.
Hello. Thank you sooooo much for this video! I have an 18 month old Cavalier and it seemed I was missing something with regards to grooming as I did not want to take her to a groomer or clip her like other Cavs I've seen. I want her to look like a champion! I'm so happy to see this video. Your video is the first video that has answered questions that I had. I brush my dog every day but watched her coat change as she got older. I purchased the tools from your website and have been carding my dog like you demonstrate. What a difference!!! She's starting to look like she's supposed to and not the big square fluff she was turning into. I have a couple of questions: Can you over card the dog? Also, do you trim whiskers or hair around the eyes? I have watched this video a dozen times and I seem something different every time. I have also watched some of your other grooming videos because I am learning from them as well. Great content!!!!! THANK YOU!!! This video has made a difference!!!
Very education video, thank you. Can you please tell me what the comb is called what you used at the end? Would you recommend just brushing with that once a week (in between grooming sessions)? Or should I be doing something more? Thanks
This is a WONDERFUL video and just confirms my belief that not all groomers know how to groom a cavalier!! If you are still answering questions, I have a 2 yr old tricolor cav with very similar color patterns to the puppy in the video but where brown, my puppy is black. Do you recommend any products or techniques for brightening the white? I feel as a city dog and hiking regularly, his white paws and leg feathers never get quite white anymore even after a good bath. I'd love something to help. Thank you again!
Great video but I wish you gave us example of the tools you use and where one can get them. I have a Cavalier and would love to be able to follow your recommendations but I need more details about the right tools as I do not want to hurt her! Thanks.

The link to the blog for the list of tools is not working for me. Can you please post the list separately? Also, I would love to know all the products you are using. Such a beautiful coat and beautiful dog!
Suzanne I forgot to ask if there is a place for using a slicker brush as part of grooming a cavalier? Is there a certain one to buy? Thanks again for such a valuable video.
Yes, there are times when a slicker comes in handy. The ones I use are linked here. groomingsafer.com/tools-link-blogs-by-breed/f/the-best-tools-for-grooming-a-cavalier-king-charles-spaniel?blogcategory=Cavalier+King+Charles
I need help! 12 years of grooming . I have a 3 years that the client had buzzed “ as a puppy cut” noe the guard hair is growing back curly ? They want flat ! I have taken out under coat , used pumice stone , and under coat rake . Still coming back Curley?? Plz advise 😢
Many times once you clipper a flat coat, it is nearly impossible to get the coat back to its original growth pattern. If it were my own dog, I would use a pumice Stone every 3 days with intention, then card once a week. But pet parents rarely ever have the desire to do that. It’s definitely not something that can be done occasionally at the grooming salon. Even maintenance of a coat that has never been clipped requires weekly work to maintain it . This is the problem with most flat coats. The pet parents must learn how to care for them between professional grooms.
Very nice video on grooming and carding techniques on a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Do you trim around the feet and trim between the back legs under the tail?

I love this video😊 Thank you so much, It is super helpful for our Cavie! Does the carding tool actually cut the fur, or is it just combing out undercoat?
It only combs.
The link to the blog for the list of tools is not working for me. Can you please post the list separately? Also, I would love to know all the products you are using. Such a beautiful coat and beautiful dog!

Questions: How often do you recommend washing a cav? Do you use any hairdryer and what stand do you put the hairdryer on?
Every 3 weeks. I use a stand dryer made for dogs. You can buy a holder for your dryer at tableworks.com

Can you use this carding technique on a springer spaniel ?
Most definitely
Very nice video on grooming and carding techniques on a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Do you trim around the feet and trim between the back legs under the tail?
On house pets if it’s requested, otherwise no. I do advise clients correct techniques vs requested techniques.
