You did an amazing job! I have a Pom from my shelter who had to be shaved because his mats were down to his skin when found. Now he’s bald, but he’s still got the Pom attitude! He’s my baby!❤ My other Pom was discarded by a breeder and her coat is insane. She can only be professionally groomed because it is an art and very hard work. Thank you for giving me an idea of how short she can go. ❤
I have a new found appreciation for dog groomers after seeing this video! It is a lot of work to do a great job. I also see why it makes more sense to take your dog to a dog groomer. There is no way I could do as good of a job as you did here. You are worth every penny your charge. I also see many places where the dog could be hurt unless the groomer knows what they are doing. Keep up the good work!
@@grandestyledoggrooming Is there any purpose in cutting their hair other than aesthetics? You should NEVER cut the hair of a Samoyed, except maybe on their paws so they don't slip on smooth surfaces. The coat of a Samoyed protects them from the heat, the cold, and the sun. Guard hairs keep the dog clean, and if you remove them, they may never grow back. Guard hairs grow very slowly and they really don't shed them.
This is the most informative Pomeranian grooming video I have seen. I am endeavoring to do my own grooming on my Pom. I am aware of not cutting the coat too short but did not know about the red fur versus the white.
I am so glad to see you grooming a Pom. I have been researching the breed for 3yrs. I have been wanting to see, in real time, the grooming process. Thank you for sharing.
I really learned a lot by watching your video. I've had my pomeranian groomed by several local groomers in the town I live in and to my horror the last time he came out, she had shaved him. He had some matting but they took the lazy way out. After watching your video I see what she could have done instead...it was all about not taking the time and about money!
Love your sweet and gentle voice while you’re grooming the little Pom. He looks fabulous and was so well behaved!! Thank you for sharing all your tips and reasons why and how you clip. My little Pom is Bitsy! Have a great week!
Great video and extremely helpful in knowing just how short a Pom should be groomed. There are too many Poms dealing with alopecia due to being groomed way too short into their undercoat. Great groom thank you! ❤
Our beautiful Pomeranian began losing her hair at age 2 after she was groomed with the Teddy Bear cut. She is now 5 years old and only has hair on her head and feet. We still love her dearly, but will follow your advice with our next Pom. Thank you for the great video!
Awesome video- I’ve taught myself how to groom my two Poms- as a former hair stylist, I fell into this out of necessity, and love for the breed! I adore my chunkers, too!! ❤
Thank you for this comprehensive video. I've been researching Poms to see if they will be a good fit for my family and if I can do the grooming myself. This was a beautiful cut and this pom was such a great client.
@@grandestyledoggrooming i have a black pomeranian client. The pet parent is 75yo. He wants me to cut the body short (not to brush)and leave the main. I explained about the fur problem. I scissor and leave around 1,5 inch. I dont think the hair is in danger, but would love to have your opinion if I have to readjust. Thank you 💖
Some dogs do just fine with the hair cut short. I have made up my mind to be adamant about keeping them in proper coat in my salon. But I am fully understanding that some pet parents insist, and it's ultimately their choice. I simply refer them out, because I personally don't want to be the one to potentially ruin the coat.
thankyou SOOO much for being sweet and gentle with grooming the pom. i watched a video the other day and the groomer was quite aggravated with the dog AND i was upset that she used the neck leash on him!!!! I lost my pom last year and im still heartbroken.
You are amazing. Once my Pom puppy gets his adult coat fully grown in I hope I am lucky enough to find someone as skilled & knowledgeable as you are. He will be a Red Sable like both his parents once he loses his puppy fluff and gets his two layer adult coat. You have definitely invested in all the proper tools & products which is so essential. I love your sweet baby talk to destress the dog. Simba is very good & patient but your handling has a lot to do with it. Where are you located? (I'm in Edmonton, Canada.) Looking forward to more of your Pom videos.
That is one pampered pet , I had one that looked almost identical. I loved that dog . He was so smart and sweet to anyone and everyone. If you had a hat on he would make his way up to get that hat off and run away with it 🙂 I sure miss him!
What a wonderful conscientious groomer. I have a pom/sheltie mix hoing for his first groom soon and wanted him taken down shorter. After watching this video, I'm going to be much more conservative and keep him longer to be on the safe side. TKS FOR THE VIDEO ❤
My 9 year old pomeranian didn't get alopecia until 2 years ago when a groomer was confused about what I wanted. Now he has no fur on the back of his legs. I was so upset when I picked him up from the groomer that day. I love him so much and he is so hamdsome from the front.
This is why it’s so important for groomers to educate themselves and know that even if a client does ask for something that will damage the coat, they should say no. Or at the very least, educate the client.

@grandestyledoggrooming what is very unfortunate is that there is nothing you can do after a dog has lost their hair. Pomeranians should NEVER have a short haircut. My pom pom Sonic is healthy, and he doesn't know he's missing hair.

So glad to find this video! I've noticed a lot of Poms online who have alopecia, including my own. Makes me wonder if it's all from too-short trims? Most of my Pom's guard hairs never grew back, after a 1" long trim. She's all just fuzzy undercoat. Was it the trim?

Suzanne, I've been looking at shears for weeks now. Last night, I bought the Chris Christensen classic series 4 pc set for $250.00 with free shipping. I hope this set will get me started. I didn’t know about the combing and I’m afraid I took out all the undercoat on both dogs because I comb until I pass the comb through. Then I use a wire brush and then a pin brush. They are brushed right from the skin. Is it too late? Will the undercoat grow back? One of mine has more hair than fur. She sheds her coat a lot when I comb her.
My Pom is about 6 months old, and nearly solid black, so I'm very unsure on how short I can groom her. I also only have regular scissors and a pet trimmer that I use on my other dog. I've learned a lot from watching this video! I'm still unsure on how to groom my Lillith bc she is quite as floofy and she's all one color so I can't tell the safe hair to cut from the unsafe.

Thank you so much. I am watching for the second time. When I received my Pom as a pup, she wouldn’t let us even touch her bum. It took about 6 months of frequent touching with a baby brush, before she would even accept a bum touch with a brush. When we reached this stage, she was about 9 months old, she finally allowed a pin brush, but, we were losing the fur blowout battle at the same time. We reached around, and there were no groomers in my area that would accept a new client. So we went to a local chain-store dog groomer, as our dog needed more than I could provide. When we picked up our pup, she was shaking, drooling, and was terrified. I don’t know what happened, I didn’t see, so I cannot speculate. So now I was back to square one. Daily, we work on brushing, 90% of the time introducing the tools, exposure therapy for dogs 🤔 😊. So now my pup is 2 years, and and only allows me to groom her. Just since seeing your video, I realize I have ruined her top coat and all the videos I saw did not teach me like you. So I have mattes and I feel like I failed my pup! My puppy sure tolerates a lot when I groom her 🥰 she trusts me so much now.
My Pomeranian dog is nasty he doesn’t like to have a grooming or someone cutting his hair he growls ,but anyway I still missed him very much he passed away on June 15 2020 😢😢😢
You are so sweet and gentile, the way you trim that beautiful pom! Out pet saloons in Luxembourg treated my poms so bad they are now so terrified. I will need to lean to do it myself.
Why get a hairy dog just to cut their hair? I used to have Samoyeds, you should NEVER EVER cut their hair unless there is absolutely no choice. If you cut their hair, the guard hairs may never grow back, and if their guard hairs never grow back, they have to be bathed a LOT MORE. They are also entirely pink under the coat, and they sunburn easily. They will both be too cold and too hot if you remove their coat. It used to AGONIZE me to see a Samoyed with a shave.
Really? My Pom has 50% less fur than you showed after grooming. I asked for a lamb cut and he looks great. I got a rehomed Pom and my last dog was a chihuahua and I am not wanting fur everywhere or to do constant brushing. This was it's easier for me. You are the first person to say they wouldn't cut their fur shorter.
She is a professional, she knows what she’s saying. A lot of Pomeranians suffer from alopecia after groomers cut their hair. You might have lucked out but that doesn’t mean that it won’t happen in the future.
I would say that a percentage grow back normally. But it is always a possibility with some that they will not grow back. I don’t want to be the one to cause permanent coat damage. I refer out clients who insist on a short trim to a facility that offers the short trims.
Some dogs grow back reasonably well for the first few years but find it harder and harder to regrow their coat properly the older they get. And the undercoat always grows back woolier and denser, which actually means more dead fur in your house! If you're getting them clipped to reduce shedding, always remember: they still have the same number of hairs in their coat, but now they're shorter and sneakier and sharper and will burrow into skin and cloth! A good demoult will do far more to reduce shedding. Besides, destroying the outer layer of the coat strongly reduces the dog's ability to thermoregulate, since the guard hairs reflect a lot of heat: together with the woolier undercoat, that means your dog will actually be hotter, despite the shorter coat.
I’m a Pom owner and I live in Las Vegas . My groomer does what I tell her I WANT ….not what “ she thinks “ I should do to MY DOG 🙄 if I want to shave my dog and dye it pink…it’s nobody’s business but my own . I’m also flabbergasted by “ Groomers “ giving medical and or breeding advice . As a retired Veterinary Tech of 20 years …it’s just amusing.
Considering that I was raised at a large breeding facility and that I have spent every day for 57 years in breeding, boarding, and grooming establishments, I do find my self qualified. That being said, I never ever shame a pet parent for wanting what they want. That is totally understandable. In my salon I have my standards. My choice. I simply refer out clients who want something different. Being a vet tech for 20 years, I am surprised that you never once saw post clipping alopecia.
What a good boy! So well behaved and he keeps looking at you to see if he's being good. So precious.
🤗😍 I noticed the same, he looks a bit like my pom, Yogi too. Angels

They are also entirely pink under the coat, and they sunburn easily. They will both be too cold and too hot if you remove their coat. It used to AGONIZE me to see a Samoyed with a shave.
I like the grooming technique but this is MUCH TOO SHORT! A Pom’s beauty is its fur….why cut it so short?
It’s much longer than the pet parents want. I almost lost them for a client because I didn’t want to go this short.

Pure nonsense her fur is still too long! Yet I'm in Florida so it needs to be short! Also the fur around their eyes needs to be washed daily!
When you cut down a Pomeranian coat, severe damage can indeed be done to it.
Thanks!
Thank you!
My Pom’s love to be brushed. They are so sweet.
