    Hi Mark, love your videos by the way, I give my koi 1 feed of high quality pellets in the morning and a feed of mealworms mid to late afternoons. They have eaten all the food within 3 minutes. This is my first year and the pond features many marginals, floating oxygenators and 2 good size water lilies. The oxygenators and lilies cover 2 thirds of the pond at the moment and looks natural. I have a filter system with UV in place and also an oxygenator. It’s got the neighbours talking and they say it looks like it’s been there for years. I’ve also got a wildlife pond with homemade filter and waterfall further down my 250 feet garden. It’s thanks to your great videos that I’ve come this far in such a short time thank you.

      As much as the fish will eat with in a few minutes, a couple of times a day or three times if it warm and they are asking for more food! The quicker they eat the food the more they get. If it sits on the surface it will feed the Algae instead of the fish.

    Hi Mark
    I have a pond (approx 15,000 litres) which started off as just plants. Then 3 tiny fish appeared which I’m assuming came as eggs on a plant. Then a neighbour gave me 6 small koi. For 2 years I have not fed the fish and they continue to grow, so there has to be sufficient natural food in the pond. Unfortunately in late November some one was desperate to empty their pond and so I inherited 13 more fish, 6 of which must be 50 to 60cm in length (the guy said he’s had some of them for 20 years), the rest are approx 20-25cm. I’m assuming these will definitely need feeding but as I’ve never fed fish before I’m concerned how much these fish will need. Is there a rough rule of thumb?

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  3 года назад +3

      What the fish eat within a few minutes. They will tell you, some keepers will feed up to 3% of the body weight a day. So I depends on a number of things. Think of them as cats in a room, the more you have the more you feed the more you will have to clean and keep an eye on the health of the fish

      If they don’t come up and ask for food look at the water quality, if it’s good and the fish are just hiding, step back and keep still. Watch them if they are scared of you you might have predators around or they need to get use to you! Patients is need when they don’t feed straight away. Feed less don’t let it sit on the surface.

    Hello Mark,
    I've just built a roughly 600L (ish) pond and it is around 8 weeks old now. It has many species of plants, floating, edge plants etc, it is a natural pond (ish). I have no mains power but two decent solar water fountains and a very powerful solar air stone.
    I have so far used some straw bales, the fountains, air stone and plants for keeping the pond healthy and it seems to have been working well. I have numerous newts, frogs, old tadpoles (4 legs now), and 5 little fish.
    I appear to have lots of duckweed, some blanket weed and perhaps strandy hair like green weed. So far I have removed some by hand and now used a powder treatment much like in one of your videos which turned it milky for a little bit.
    I am wondering what the best course of action is for me at the moment to combat the duckweed and also a recent poorer clarity with a green/brown shade to it.. What do I do to get the clarity back again? I have added more shade to the pond as it is quite sunyand purchased more floating plants.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  7 лет назад +1

      Controlling duck weed is a big problem in a wildlife pond, don't feed the fish they will eat the duckweed. Remove as much as you can and clean the floating plants you put on, as you might be adding more duckweed.
      Clarity give it a few days and see if it improves, is the water like tea or green the shade will help the more plants will help and the floating ones will enjoy the nutrient rich water.
      Quick answer more carry on your doing the right things. More plants, shade, less fish food, patience and bit of TLC

      Make yourself smaller, don’t feed until they ask for it, if your small and the fish come over reward them, start of if they come with in 6” release pellets. Keeping your hand and body still. Encourage them. If you are trying this. It might be water quality issues. Stop feeding then the water quality will improve then try again. Most people try and then give up. Throwing the food in anyway. The fish are feeding on something or they are not happy.

You want to feed them a staple fish food then other treat food as an change but be careful to pollute the water. The fish will absorb what they need and pass the rest so they create more waste with some types of food.

    Medikoi is average food at best it's just the price that's premium Oh and putting Medi as in medical makes you in some way think it has medicinal purpose well that's just great marketing. Don't get me wrong it's decent but there are better out there. It also takes a long time to break down in the filter system which in turn affects water quality. If you want to feed real quality try the Probites range, It's the only food on the market where all the ingredients are fit for human consumption (human grade) And it's also silly to start feeding growth for 2-3 weeks in the Uk it will make little or no difference. If we eat higher protein for 2-3 months it also makes no difference. Your far better off feeding a staple food mixed 50/50 with wheatgerm all year round. And once the whether gets colder 10 or below cut out the higher protein food and only feed when your fish are looking to feed. There metabolism reacts better in the long term and it's better for the fish and also aids faster growth.

      jobby onewards thanks for your feedback and comment, great information, we have found it to be one of the best. I disagree with some of your comments but that’s ok.
      Please note: We do not sell any type of fish food or we are not given any type of fish food to promote. Different people get different results, I guess it all depends on what level you are at and what is available to you.
