    I have a bunch of fat bikes, living in the mountains of Colorado. They are awesome trail bikes. I have a chromo, an aluminum, a carbon and a titanium fatty, plus two full suspension fatty ebikes and two fatty unicycles. Last black Friday I bought a malus in sale for $280. Since getting it I put a wide range 11-50t and a 32 oneby and sealed 155mm bottom bracket and a 780mm bar, shimano hydraulic brakes and a trigger shifter. But last week I ordered a luna cycle 1000w bbshd with the hotrod programming and a 48vx40ah frame bag battery. I can't wait to see what it'll be like. I took a target store bike and it's awesome right now and pretty light weight. Hoping it'll be amazing with the ebike upgrade. I love your channel

    I've said this many many times. I am a fat biker with six seasons under my belt. The worst thing about fat bikes is the tire profile which tends to be flat and squarish. This obviously depends on the the tire and rim width. The current standard rim width is 80mm. In my opinion (formed over the last six seasons of trial and error) one should use a 5" tire on an 80mm. Even a 4" on an 80mm results in a bad profile. Your bike has the 100mm wide rims to which you have mounted 4" tires. Granted they are a massive improvement over the stock tires that is an awful awful profile which results in the kind of sluggish performance you are experiencing. My advice to you is to try and find a wider tire. It would be even better to ditch those wheels but it's super hard to find a set of 80mm wide QR rims that have that out of date spacing.
    I started out with a Vinson (I created the Vinson FB group as well) so I know full well what these bikes are capable of but also what there weak points are. My current fat is a Chinese carbon frame, ebay Lauf fork, 1x10 speed 11-36 cass/26t front with grip shift. The wheels are 26x5 Terrene Johnny 5's mounted tubeless on a set of 50mm wide Surly Rabbit Holes (I built the wheels). This makes for a super round profile that makes the bike fast and lively. It also results in more "APR" or Air Pressure Range. This means you have more pressure adjustability before performance goes straight out the door. This big tire/skinny rim ethos doesn't just apply to fat bikes either. You can check out my bike as well as some of my other crazy good budget creations on IG @racerx8410712. Oh and I'm into my current fat with a 29er Plus set for summer for about $1200.

    This is admittedly an edge case, but if you have wide hips (bone structure, not body-mass!) then the wide q factor of a fat bike right out the gate is just perfect and doesn't present problems with pedaling at all - normal or narrow bikes may in fact feel weird instead.
    I haven't taken my fatbike out in a while but you mentioning the stance is making me remember how nice it is to not have to shift my feet outboard or rock around the bike when pedaling hard. Thank you.

    • @laattamaa
      @laattamaa 2 года назад

      Since i have wide hips and thick thighs, i feel right at home on my fatbike, q-factor fits like a glove for me. I took my old Kona kikapu for a ride after riding only my fattie for a couple of months, it felt weird and uncomfortable.

      I went with a Shimano Altus system, with an 11-48 ZTTO lightweight cassette. Paired with a 32t oval chain ring makes this big bike climb like a mountain goat! It out climbs my 27.5+ bike handily, and they are identically geared.

      @@skooterbrah How are you getting an Altus system to work with that range? I thought the Altus mech maxed out at like ~36t for the cassette. I’d imaging that without a clutch on the mech, it chain slaps and drops chains occasionally?

    Fatbike tires.....definitely huge gains with real bicycle style fabric tires..I'm running 4.8 and get much more suspension and pressure adjustability.
    Using bafang bbshd. On hitch frame . With symmetrical moonlander chromoly
    Fork. Stock front wheel added quick release .
    Rear is framed rear wheel 80mm. With bearing caps to adapt to through axle in future . Shimano xt 9 speed cassette. Shimano lx hydraulic 9 speed dual control..the kind that shifted using brake lever like turn signal..
    Down to deore 9 speed derailur. Kmc 9 speed chain.26 tooth front sprocket 34 rear . Must use quality cassette or will fold the big gears over with bbshd..mid using gears , drive is like having a Honda 50 motor can go anywhere on or offroad

    Bundling up for 50 degrees, the accent doesn't deceive you! I'm currently struggling to acclimate to the heat of spring lol.
    I had one of those Bolany forks and looking at the bushings/seat in the leg castings made me put the rigid fork back on. It's probably totally fine for greens and/or lighter riders but my concern is it actually rides well enough it wouldn't be hard to outride its strength.

    Kev, Excellent video!! I ride a fat bike all winter up here in Minnessota, even when it is -20 F. I have a Specialized fatboy and I really enjoy it. You really don't need that much width to ride, unless you are riding in really fluffy snow, and even with a wider tire, the handling sucks and its a lot of work (on fluffy snow). I installed CST Toboggans 26x4 and they work perfectly...I disagree that fatbikes can only be ridden in green trails. I ride black trails on the fatty no problem (especially after I added the air suspension). The wide tires take the berms better than Regular MTB tires, and they also grip better on loose dirt... The downside is rolling resistance and weight.. you have to work harder.. but you get a better workout. I bought a skinny wheelset for the summer 29x2.4 that fits perfectly on the fatboy.. and I am still not convinced that I should be riding them. I am 6.4 so the Q factor is a non issue for me... I can climb steep hills sitting of standing... I will say however that doing jumps on a ridgid fork is no good.. even with lowering PSI fat tires.. they can be bouncy and feel uncontrollable. My thoughts are, why have several bikes if you can ride all trails in all seasons with one bike??? BTW studded tires ride on ice likes its tacky dirt...

    Those Wake stems make me nervous. I've had several break in odd places, and also had the heads break off the bolts before they meet torque. No dog in this fight, but in this case you do pay for what you get, and a stem is one area where you should 100% look for safety above all other concerns. Cheers dude, love that you're covering fats!

    I have a Specialized Epic FatBoy fat tire bike. When looking for a front shock I could only find two a RocShock which is what I got, the Bluto. I can't remember what the other shock company was. I use my fat tire like a mtb or an all terrain bike. I had 4.8 inch tires and went to 4 inch tires which I like more. It does take more out of a person riding it. My gravel bike is less of an effort riding the same route.

    I hate the amazon brand bike products. Rockbros, Bucklos, Ztto, VG Sports, they make products that look good on your screen but the cassettes are made of soft cheese, the grips wear out and loose surface grip in a month, the axles in the pedals bend if you look at them for too long, just my experiences. Deckas makes some good CNC aluminum parts in their corner of the same factory though. BB tools and Chainrings are pretty simple to punch out, turns out.

    I got mine from Walmart when, for whatever reason, the M was $100 cheaper. It went up to the same price as the other sizes about 4 days after I bought it. They go in and out of stock with no warning, if you want one, better off buying it immediately when in stock. With what is going on in China, if it’s in stock, you had better buy it.

    I like your fatbike and how it has improved. Great video! I do however disagree about the fatbikes ability to climb. I've taken my fatbikes on plenty of black diamond trails and climbing is one of the stronger aspects of it. I prefer fatbikes over a full suspension MTB anyday. The biggest downside to the big tires is that it's harder to create and maintain speed in my opinion. If you ever want to see some REAL fatbike riding just check out Pat Smage's youtube channel or Blake Samson on GMBN.

    Honestly Kev, if you're only upgrading the bars by 20mm a much cheaper solution is to just stick the grips 1 cm out on each side. I mean, you are using lock on grips and it makes almost no difference at all compared to buying new bars

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  2 года назад

      That would leave a leverage point that could potentially lead to a grip failure. It could rip at the excess point. The odds are unlikely, but it could happen. An opposing view would be that it might act like a bumper when I drop a bike on its side 😁

There is so much opportunity to make a gud profit in the low to mid price bikes!
