@@duzer A cute dork! :)

I just watched GCN winter tips and it was like wear wind proof clothing, use layers, use feet covers. But this is my kind of winter tips. From north bc where snow gets up to your hips, or vancouver island where its freezing rains.
Good overview. I ride daily down to -25 C. One thing I found that really "changed my life" are gaiters. I wear cross country ski boots with alpine gaiters in the winter on flat pedals. Warm and dry feet so change your psychological approach, you're happy and comfortable. The gaiters totally keep your legs protected from wind and wet. Oh, and I ride a single speed with drum brakes, impervious to weather. And yes fenders and studded tires.
All very good tips. Took me years to learn what you explained in a few minutes. Couple of things I also learned. For morning winter commutes studded tires are invaluable for riding on black ice. Another was keeping my toes warm. After many painful mornings waiting for my toes to defrost I found small plastic bags covering just my toes between my wool socks and shoes did wonders. Later I also started using shoe covers.
Skiing helmets are not designed to be used as a cycling helmet, on mine it was especially mentioned. The difference in not only the insulation but the protection too. In skiing accidents the stress on the helmet is very different than in cycling. Take care!
I set up a 1984 Trek “single track” with 2.75” studded tires, cheap full fenders, raised face fat pedals, Topeak rear rack with donated beautiful donated panniers last winter. Did not get it out much but I am actually looking forward to this winter coming up. All the components except the tires were used or NWT, all for about $250. Not bad for a two wheel cafe and shopping cart. We came up with the same solution for head gear. Ride in winter though, you are going to fall. Knee and elbow pads are a must for this senior.
Snow biking just popped into my head because I don't want to wait for spring. I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants to ride all year long. Thanks for making the video.
first snow today in NJ. went riding regular street bike with regular skinny tires. It was soo much fun. Love your energy. nice video
Most motivational video for winter riding yet. Can’t wait to save up enough to get that winter set but my huff is doing great! Needed to see a video like this for that extra nudge to do this every morning instead of ubering which gets expensive over time!
For hands I would recommend Bar Mitts vs heavy gloves. For feet I recommend 45NRTH footwear. I also recommend shell pants with zippers along the sides to put on and take off over shoes/boots. Studded tires for sure and they don't have to be fatter. I ride 700x35 studs in a mountain town for the past 7 years. The rest is pretty bang on.
Studded tires is a must if it gets icy. It is actually a lot of fun to ride the bike in winter.
I ride at night in the winter so my goggles are slightly tinted snowmobile goggles.
I also plan to try heated rechargeable gloves this winter.
Loved your video and awesome suggestions.
Snow biking is fun biking if you have the right gear!!!! Good advice
Yessir!
Haha! You fulfilled my request! On the last video you posted about the new bike day, I requested that you make another bike commuting video and you didn't dissapoint. Thanks man! Stay warm and cozy!
mainHERO88 I aim to please:)
Just moved to Minnesota and i plan to winter ride. Thanks for your informative and exciting video.
Love this! Great subject, well covered and fun!
Thanks!
Thanks for this video! This is the one that introduced me to you. And been putting the ideas to use this year on a limited budget. Especially the vented rain hardshell jackets and wool wool wool.
You got it! Wool all the way :) Happy trails
I started biking a bunch this year and live in Pennsylvania. I'd like to carry the momentum of my newly found hobb-session into the colder months. I found your video helpful. Placed an order for a lot of what you talked about, and learned a hella cool word - balaclava.
Right on!! Happy trails
Yup! I have all that gear. I guess I will be riding to work this week. Much love from Canada 🧤🧣🧦💥
Hi!
I'm from Brazil and I moved recently to Áustria. Your tips have been very useful for me. In Brazil don't have a winter similar to European winter and I was suffering a lot. Thank you very much!
Hello!! Glad this video could help you! Hope you stay warm
Ryan V. Duzer,
Very well presented, highly recommended, informative and inspiring instructions for the past-present-future snowriders.
Mo
😎
i saw that flower in the beginning and instantly knew it was in CO
lived there recently and i plucked a couple of those and brought them to wisconsin.
they dry super well and hold their shape.
Much positive energy thanks for sharing!
Plan to bike Yosemite Valley this winter. Thanks for the info
When you start a video with 'welcome to my bedroom' I can't help but stay to watch the rest of the video. I'm new to biking/winter biking. Your video was helpful especially the bit about merino wool
;)
Another great video. Really good advice, now I just need to get fenders 😀
That helmet is hella smart. I never thought of having a ski helmet before.
It's really nice!
Gore Bike Wear sells a helmet cover that has treated me well in Chicago. Allowed me to avoid having to purchase a second helmet. Cover easily stores away during warm months. One disadvantage there though is I'm not sure if I could get lights on my helmet if needed. It also lacks the sweet ear flaps on that ski helmet, but I compensate with a headband.
Snow board pants are great winter cycling choice too.
Ryan Van Duzer Don’t use a ski helmet on a bicycle. They are designed for snow not street.
A ski helmet is absolutely what you need. If it’s good enough for running into a tree it’s good enough for the bike. The nicer ones have little flaps that you can open/close depending on the temp and may have pockets in the earflaps for little bluetooth speakers.
Things I've had fail on my bikes in winter:
- internal gears freeze in whatever gear it was in when it got too cold, turning it into a single speed.
- break and gear cables freeze and get stuck
- front hub dynamo froze, preventing the wheel from turning. I forced it to turn by pushing it, and broke the dynamo.
- frozen locks, making it hard to unlock your bike.
In addition if there is salt on the roads, it will cause everything to rust and wear down extremely fast, unless you're super diligent about keeping it clean and lubed.
I'm leaning towards a cheap simple bike for winter, with fewer parts that can fall. An old single speed one with foot breaks and full fenders would probably be ideal. Even a fixed gear one could be fun, skidding in the snow. :) And don't forget good head and rear lights.
Lovely....I can not wait to go out ride for my first time in winter this season... Great Info video
Msafiri Mhehe enjoy!!! It's a blast
Great video! I'm inspired to ride in my mild Northern California winters!
I used to ride to work year round in Santa Clara county. The rain can feel really cold if you're not prepared for it and be careful of ice that you really can't see on some of the coldest mornings. The winter afternoons are often ideal riding temperature though.
Beautiful shots in this video man.
Love this video Ryan. Really well edited... awesome! And love the slo-mo of the flakes.
Thanks my man! Slow Mo flakes are my specialty :)
Great tips! I am in Utah and have been eyeing my less used hardtail. It needs purpose!
Nice!
Awesome man, keep riding. It's healthy in all season.
This genuine enthusiasm of yours is great. I enjoyed watching your video.
I am commuting in the winter as well, but I don't have such great stuff as you do, but over time, when there's more money, it'll come. :-) And I agree that what you need most importantly is a good attitude, enjoying the ride.
An good attitude takes you a LONG way! Happy trails my friend
Another GREAT video. Keep up the GREAT work. Positive attitude is so uplifting. Thank you my brother from another mother 👍😎🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️
Thank YOU!!
this video make's me wanna gonna for a spin on my bike.....great positive guy : )
Hooray! That's the idea, have fun out there
Muy chingón tu video, papá, muchas gracias por la buena onda!
Thank you for the ideas and the positive outlook ... We have a big storm hitting Boston on Tuesday.. I'll be getting out my old mountain bike for the commute. It has knarly tires. I love the idea of using a ski helmet . Not a fan of bike helmets. They don't feel like they give much protection.
Have fun in the snow my man!
Thanks for making this video which is very helpful for me riding around Toronto
Happy trails my friend
@@duzer all shower pass gear is pretty expensive:) I will buy some stuff from Costco like snow helmet
Good stuff Ryan...thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
Wool is key -- I wear wool base layers, wool socks, wool gloves, wool tights, a wool vest, wool jersey, and even a cycling specific wool jacket. I even have wool bibs. Thanks for confirming my biases to the world.
yep, wool is the BEST!
Iam scared ❄...but not any more! thanks Ryan watched vid last year ...Now 🤸♂️ready to get after it again this winter 💥✊🚲🙃🙂👋
Thank you for making the video.
Thanks for the guide Ryan. I'm a biker from Boulder CO too and this is my first winter not having a car and commuting solely by bike. There's 3 inches of snow on the ground outside today. Wish me luck!
Yep, I was out there today too, fun stuff!! happy trails to you
Ryan Van Duzer Thanks Ryan! My first day commuting in the snow was a success and a fun snow adventure. I’m looking forward to biking year round 😁. Have a good winter ❄️🥶!
You too buddy!
Living in Saint Paul, Minnesota, winter cycling is ever present and awesome. Surly Ogre is my go to whip during winter days.
for sure, Surly is the best
That last bit of advice is the most important!
Ryan it's just amazing.
Made my own studded tires in high school found a icy hill. So much fun!!
Sweet!
Best I could find , thanks bro
Great video. Informative. Thank you!
Thanks James!
Great video, keep it up!
Thanks for watching!
I'm used to riding in Minnesota cold temperatures so I usually wear a two piece compression suit some thick socks & waterproof duck boots with insulation plus a face mask with mittens that are insulated not gloves.
great vid and attitude, thanks!
Thanks!!!! Stay tuned for more vids like this
Showerpass is great company love my refuge jacket and pants 4 years still good to this day
They sure are
Thank you for the encouragement, good sir!🙏🏻🍀💚
You got it! Happy trails
Thanks, now I have a better Idea on what to wear ! Awesome
You'll be glad to hear that after watching your videos, and even thou I live in one of the coldest parts of the U.S.A., California, (Haha that's a joke)I'm going to take the time to learn how to ride my bicycle in the winter. No, we don't very often see freezing weather, but still it can be cold, wet, and miserable. Thank you for your videos
Happy frozen trails my friend!
Such a good video!
Thanks!
Can't wait to ride this winter.
Just moved to Colorado from Florida about 3 months ago. Glad I came across your video. Can't wait to put winter miles under my tires. I ride a fixed gear bike and stay in Aurora. Stay safe and maybe we will cross bike lanes one day.
Welcome to Colorado and happy trails! Bundle up ;)
Bikes drones snow. I love it. Great video
Thanks!!
dude this is brilliant thanks for doing this!
Thanks for watching!
Ryan the other day I saw your instagram post commuting on your bike and I was wondering about your gear and then I saw this and it answered all my questions. Your're in Switzerland and we missed you already! Why does Switzerland have to be sooooo far away? :( :( I hope you and Ali have a great time there and I hope you get to see all your friends that you spent time with when you were there. Thank you for this video!!!
I just moved to Alaska *and* discovered that I love bicycling, so this will come in useful this winter.
Great!
Bar Mitts are your friend:-). I toss a couple hand warmers in them when it's down around zero (F) outside. The showers pass jackets are a bit pricey, but very nice. Great ideas here, I plan on going year round this year. Normally I am a March-November...maybe December cyclist....but I usually take a break in January, February, and sometimes into march due to trail conditions (bad mud).
bar mitts are a great idea!
I live in the tropical country and the rainy season make cycling more challenging
Awesome video,really loved it
Thanks!
thanks too bro,,u r really awesome.
thanks too bro,,u r really awesome.
awesome video!
That was awesome. Thanks. Glad we finally got some winter weather in Colorado. :)
Me too, although today is sunny and the snow is melting, get out while you can!!!
It's still pretty chilly. :) What bike are you using in the video?
It's the Surly Krampus
The only real useful video I found about winter biking. And I mean real winter, not those fancy GCN guys who ride in Britain. Their winter is our autumn.
Ha!! Good point, we get real winters here in Colorado
As my wife noted after the last hiking trip „the Merino wool shirt doesn‘t smell but you do...“ so much about the roses...
Hey I'm a colorado native, this is my first year in the snow cycling and Im definitely going to look for a belaclava
Right on! Bundle up and you’ll be fine
Enjoy your great attitude. - James
Thanks! Hope your bike is treating you well
This will be first year cycling in the winter and up in Canada, we get some serious winter. I'm an alpine climber and ski mountaineer and so clothing wise, I'm fully kitted out. Will swap my bike lid for my ski helmet and googles for sure! with temps to -30C here, I'm going to try pogies for my bike, I struggle with cold hands. Challenge for me will be keeping my feet warm, going to try some winter boots I have that are pretty warm but not so huge I can't ride in them. Awesome video, first one I found of yours, going to check out the rest of your content. Happy riding!!
Right on! you're in for some adventurous bike rides!! Have fun and stay warm
Same. -20 right now in feb. And saskatchewan
I bought my fatbike commuter for snow an more lol at least i have the dirt roads until the snow hits but it handles good like a road bike on roads
with the winter on its way it would be nice to see more of your town in the bad weather on a bike! (is nice the right word) and i mean lots of vids not just one, every trip an adventure, perhaps a different bike path each time?
Hmm, I'll try and do something like this!
Thanks !
I Anchorage we like dogwood poggies and lights on the bike for sure in winta
You make some great snappy videos bruh😎
wow, epic ride!!
Thank you my friend
You’re welcome
Awesomeness!
Snow biked for the first time this so much fun . ppl look at you like you are totally insane
It's a great time!
Commuting in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for 10 years I like using an old ski/snowboard outfit. It's red so very visible and it gets down to minus 20 celcius here in wintertime...so you need to have a good outer shell and like you say, lots of layers under. I found I had to wear large winter boots and gloves because the feet and hands are first to get cold. Also...don't try to break speed records. Lower your tire PSI too. Ride an old beater bike because the road salt and grime will literally eat your nice bike. Oh...I found a ski helmet worked fantastic too.
Thank you!!!
Snow riding like a BOSS!
This is my first time commuting on my bike during winter and this video is awesome. I already got basically everything to said to get except for the goggles. I wear glasses and I HAVE had it where it was snowing hard and I could barely see because the snow was flying in my eyes and my glasses were covered in melted snow droplets. I would love to get goggles but I don't know how that would effect my glasses in terms of my glasses fogging up inside the goggles. Do you know if that would happen? I've considered getting prescription goggles but they are just way to expensive.
This guys is amazing. I am teacher and sometimes I wish I was that infectious!!!
:) thanks!
2020 comment. This is my second full winter with dedicated winter bike in N WYOMING. Still love this video. I have to upgrade my studded tires to full coverage, not just the edges. Better footwear by going to winter hikers and take a pair slip on cleats (Yak Traks) to get across sections unbikeable. Hoping to hang up the winter bike by April 1. Hoping....
Right on man!!
Awesome!
Great!! Thanks for the worthy advice. From Sweden ;)
Heja Sverige!
This is great. First snow of the winter and I wanna learn to snow ride. I actually have a couple bikes, a xc race bike getting an end of the year tune up rn. My hybrid (also doubles as a cyclocross bike, a spin bike and a long distance summer rider, every day bike), and finally my old trashy Walmart bike that I use whenever I'm doing something where I wouldn't want my good bikes to get damaged. So tomorrow's gonna be fun, taking the Walmart "mountain" bike and I'm gonna learn something new
Tear it up buddy! Sounds like the perfect bike to rage in the snow
I also just subscribed!
Thanks my friend!
You know what would be interesting to see. A winter bikepacking adventure
I'm working on that for this winter!
Hey Ryan thanks for the great video. I'll be taking your tips on board for this winter. I live in the east of France where it gets pretty damn cold, so I'll do what you say and hope for the best. You ride 365 days a year? RESPECT - I hope to be like you one day!
Hello Andrew! France sounds like a great place to ride a bike in the winter!!! Lucky! And yes, I've never had a car, so I ride everywhere. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
I do it the old fashion way when I commute in the winter. I remote start my vehicle, let it idle for 10 minutes. The time I get inside of the vehicle it is toasty warm. The best part is, I'm sitting on my heated seats, sipping hot chocolate, listening to music and wearing my light winter jacket. Life is truly good.
I like your positivity, you really motivated me to do it , i am planning to sell my car and i bought a Giant MTB
That's awesome!! Have fun out there
Good video. One comment I wanted to add was that I find the balaclava/ski mask restricts your breathing quite a bit. I tried it once and found it way too hard to breathe through the mouth - you can't get by with just the nose unless you are a going at a super slow pace. Get a balaclava (or something similar) that has a hole for your mouth. I got one of those half-face masks that velco around the back from Walmart, and then cut some larger holes around the mouth area to aid in breathing - it does a decent job.
And by the way - this only applies to when it starts to get pretty cold, like below 20F. Below 20F I find I really need to cover things up. Above 20F I find I am OK with a fully open balaclava.
Good points! Thanks
Very funny and informative!
Thanks!
sweet video!
Thanks!
Great video! Link to bell?
Yeah.... Awesome Man..... Awesome Videos..... We are also planning for snow MTB Biking..... It's Helpful For Us....
Bhaskar Sarkar thanks for watching, have a great time snow biking!
Ryan Van Duzer Thanks A Lot Man..... Keep Posting Videos.....
