I have a tip for u. I get a 3 Pack of flexible cutting boards from the dollar tree and cut out my own templates they are see-through and you can see your work without raising it up and down, it will help you line it up perfectly for you Mark and cut.
How I missed your channel so much. In April my dad got really sick. I had been working on a quilt for him. I was bound and determined to finish this quilt just in case something were to happen to him. So I worked and worked and worked. As soon as I was done, my hubby and I drove the 7+ hours to go be at his side. I covered him with the quilt. I wasn’t told how badly he had gotten. He used his quilt for two days before he passed away. My mom uses that quilt to sleep under every night since. You inspired me with your military quilt and I remember I was supposed to send you a block but sadly, this was about the time my dad was diagnosed with dementia among other things. Thank you for everything you do and how much you and your lovely wife mean to many of us.
The wife is right! Thanks for the tips, I am making a t-shirt quilt for my daughter with all her favorite t-shirts. So thanks again for the great tips.
Hello QM! I have to let you know that you have been such an inspiration to me. After watching ALL of your RUclips videos, I made my own ironing board for my sew/quilt corner (I have extremely limited space) and I made my own cone thread holder as well, just like yours (well almost!). I figured if I built my own chicken coop with no help I can do these things too....but you gave me that extra nudge to GET IT DONE. I enjoy your videos so much and your wife is a real trooper :) Keep up the great work, as I too have a t-shirt quilt on the horizon. From a first time quilter at 62 years old, thank you for your service to our country! Semper Fi!!
I’m glad I came across your channel. I’m a quilting Corpsman😊started when I had been on active duty back in 2002, definitely a great form of therapy! I look forward to following all your projects. Oh a t- shirt quilt was one of my first quilts back when first starting out.
As the daughter-in-law of a Marine, wife of a Marine,sister-in-law of 3 Marines, mother of a Marine and mother-in-law of a Marine I understand the urge of the MARPAT. As the an Air Force vet I have to say your wife is right. She also has a nice laugh. Sewing machine is just a power tool with thread. Hope you get your new power tool soon.
Yasssss! I am so here for this. I can thumbs up your vids on both my accounts now. It is Hunter that did the embroidery of the American soldier. If you ever do that again I have extra QofV labels. Say hello to that great lady of yours and hope the whole fam is well!
I cut the front from the backing, then stabilize it before my finial cut for quilt. Then the backing is free for rags or filler blocks or large blocks for the backing. However, it makes the quilt heavier indeed. Nice winter bed quilt that way. Love watching your channel and was happy to piece one of your love shouldn’t hurt quilts.
Great video. I love when you say your house your quilt. Sometimes people stick their nose in our quilting process. Like if my seams are off 1/16 in. Or so at my house they stay. I don't plan on entering a quilt in a show so as long as I can live with it and the person receiving the quilt doesn't know the difference it stays small mistakes and all. So glad you are back making videos again.
You could consider the MARPAT as a backing. The last T-shirt quilt that I did I used a bamboo cotton blend and I’m sold on it! It drapes very nicely and didn’t add too much weight. It was a double sided T-shirt quilt so it was pretty heavy. If you need more shirts you might consider making them with the backs of the shirts. You can make some half square triangles or 4/9 patch blocks as well and get more bang for your buck. I’m curious if you’ll be renting time on miss Bernina to quilt this? I’ve custom quilted one and did an all over simple stipple on the last one. I think they both turned out nicely. Glad to see you back sharing and inspiring people!
Love the Manly Man's t-shirt idea. I like the fabric with the names of the States on it but I like the Marpat too! I would have to find a way to get some to that in there somewhere some how. Y'all do make a great team! Thanks for the video!
OMG WOW LOVING That Square you cut this a.m......Your Quilt is going to be MANifique!!! It was fun watching your cutting skills at work.....and that is a GREAT Tshirt piece. OH I LOVE Yvonne's choice for a backing...it's cool and Manly for sure and very USA! You are so funny and so is your ABR Yvonnie a.k.a. Always Be Right!!!!! You are the cutest couple....just like newly Weds and Yvonne your Laught is Contagious..best laugh ever!! Can't wait to see your quilt all ready for the backing it's going to be so cool. Can't wait too to hear how many squares you'll actually be using I know the count now is 50 soooooooooooooo!!!!!!! Thanks for your Outstanding Tutorial and Sharing your Tremendously Terrific Tips, Tricks & Techniques!! YOU TWO SO ROCK!! HUGS, Joan Smith
Wonderful idea! Got plenty of yucky t-shirts from my three boys and can salvage enough to make a quilt. Thank you for the idea! Got plenty of New Zealand fabric to compliment it, yahoo!
June Taylor has a T-shirt ruler it’s see threw like most rulers and has grid on it and 3 different sizes it’s great I use all the time helps you center the design better. I also use flannel for the back it feels like T-shirt material. Love watching your channel also easier to do interfacing first before you cut. Your sewing room your rules. Thank you for the instructions
Thanks for sharing. Thanks for saying your wife is always right an not have a problem with that. Not many manly men like you. Also thanks for your service to this country. My dad army WW11. Ex was Navy Vietnam.
GOOD MORNING Oh yeah the State names would make a wonderful border binding. The colors alone would work with most of the t shirt colors and bring it all together. Just a suggestion- put the card board INSIDE the shirt and center it then trace it. You'll be able to see it centered better. You do u though. I enjoy your videos much.💖😃 Another tip - turn t shirt inside out and fuse interfacing before cutting or marking makes it easier
I’m so excited for this series. I have a good 10-15 tshirts from different units I was in or deployment shirts. I’ve been saving them for years with the intention of doing a tshirt quilt. However, while I can sew (easy stuff) I have never done a quilt and I’ve been fearful of running an item I couldn’t replace.
Invest in a 15"x15" Olfa square. You can see through it to fussy cut. Using the 15x15 you can size down or all the way up. Good tools reduce stress and save time! Good job!
I am just finishing up 2 illusion, quillows for my grandchildren--They are blankets with a pocket that when folded they are pillows, but they can open into a quilt.
A manly quilt out of t shirts what a great idea going to have to make one for my brother. I sent you a couple of emails I know you are busy but would you please take a look it for candy for troops and greeting cards never used. Thanks so much. Love to see you back.
So happy to see you back and this is great u just started making my granddaughter a T-shirt quilt with her volleyball T-shirts can’t wait to see the next video 😉😉😉😉
I'm currently making a quilt for a friend out of her children's baby clothes, the squares are much much smaller , it's taking time but it is looking beautiful
I'm enjoying these vids, as I've just started a t-shirt quilt. I am using a big quilting square ruler because I've gotta be able to see through it! Haven't started ironing on the pellon, that'll be the next challenge. Be blessed!
Where, from who, Did you learn to quilt? It's awesome the things you And your wife do. I love your attitude... and, "my house, my rules" ... "no rules, it's just fabric and thread" is Very freeing
Great project, and great description, but I would have kept the blank back piece (your car rag), and made a matching back side of the quilt blank and interfaced the same way...or made a solid top for another quilt, or alternated blocks for two quilts, or used the solids to extend quilt #1....
Don’t know what happened. No sound. Fixed it. Recommend your channel to all the newbies I encounter. Especially the young men. So they can see there are male quilters. You always do a great job!
Hummmmmm, this has possibilities. I would have trouble convincing myself to cut up "good" t-shirts. I do have some shirts that are no longer in wearable condition that would be nice to preserve. I don't have nearly enough for a quilt, but finding more at thrift stores, etc., could lead to some interesting design elements for a quilt. Would it be better to cut the shirt and interfacing a little oversized, then trim down to the desired size after they're fused?
I don´t know if you can use the tip but what about only using a frame of the cardboard and not the whole square? That way you will be able to see the print and place it. You can then choose to draw on the inside of the frame instead of the outside. Hope it makes sense!
Great teamwork, wifey was right on sashing. My concern would be how would the state sash look against a white T-Shirt if you plan to use one. You could bind with the other fabric or use it when you label it, kinda your brand or signature.
Very happy I stumbled upon your channel. My husband, can see far better than I can- he was taught- I've taught myself. I LOOK for "no rule quilters"... I'm working my way through older videos, and trying to keep up with new. Do you Accept fabric donations - I heard in one video, and, would LOVE to send you a bit of scrappy pieces to add in to your stacks... p.s. looking at a no-fusible t-shirt quilt...
Your quilt room, your rules! I have seen many beautiful t-shirt quilts that have random size blocks. Or you can do all blocks the same size. Or you can pick two sizes where 4 of the smaller sizes will sew up to a block the same as the larger size. There are no rules!
I have a tip for u. I get a 3 Pack of flexible cutting boards from the dollar tree and cut out my own templates they are see-through and you can see your work without raising it up and down, it will help you line it up perfectly for you Mark and cut.
What an awesome tip! Thanks, I’m going to use it.
That's a GREAT Idea! Thank you!!
I love you and your wife. We can't leave out your fur babies . You make me want to go back and stay quilting again.
What I love about your tutorials is that you keep them basic. You make them so that even someone with no experience can follow along.

I learned from you in making a t-shirt quilt. Thank you. Sandra B.

Smashing is perfect. I made one for hubby who’s a long hauler. Thanks🥰

Good to see you! Great tips & idea!!! Your wife’s giggles & yours make me smile! Thank you!
Very cool and great instructions! You are the best.

I love the camo fabric for a manly man quilt.

I love your idea on the template.♥️. Thank You
Excellent sashing choice!!! Can't wait to see when it's done

Great demo using the interfacing .. thanks!!
Love your videos
I really love the way you tell your instructions. Thank you.

I am just finishing up 2 illusion, quillows for my grandchildren--They are blankets with a pocket that when folded they are pillows, but they can open into a quilt.
Carrie Woods My aunt made me one of those when I graduated high school, and I love it!! Still have it and I’m 42 years old. 😁
Make your template so that the center is open so you can see your design.
Yes! I agree.
A manly quilt out of t shirts what a great idea going to have to make one for my brother. I sent you a couple of emails I know you are busy but would you please take a look it for candy for troops and greeting cards never used. Thanks so much. Love to see you back.
The state quilt is a much better option. Good choice.
So happy to see you back and this is great u just started making my granddaughter a T-shirt quilt with her volleyball T-shirts can’t wait to see the next video 😉😉😉😉
Glad I’m here to c ur t-sheet chat
Yes. We are always right. Signed, A Wife (great fabric choice!)
Awesome!

Love watching your videos. Your awesome
I made a few nz quits for wrk with t shirts and one for a man and they absolutely lve it from fiona Lee from nz thanks
You need to make a center panel with some kind of “manly man” marpat appliqué. That would be amazing.
Great project, and great description, but I would have kept the blank back piece (your car rag), and made a matching back side of the quilt blank and interfaced the same way...or made a solid top for another quilt, or alternated blocks for two quilts, or used the solids to extend quilt #1....
I have thought about doing a t-shirt quilt but was afraid of messing it up because the fabric is so stretchy. You make it look easy! Thanks!
I made a T-shirt quilt using the Dresden plate so that they looked like flowers
Don’t know what happened. No sound. Fixed it. Recommend your channel to all the newbies I encounter. Especially the young men. So they can see there are male quilters. You always do a great job!
You can make tshirt yarn from the bottoms of those tshirts.
Yes, that's a better way to get the size you want.
Why not use both. State name fabric horizontal and the other vertical? Keep Quilting.
I don´t know if you can use the tip but what about only using a frame of the cardboard and not the whole square? That way you will be able to see the print and place it. You can then choose to draw on the inside of the frame instead of the outside. Hope it makes sense!
Use the Marpat as the border or the backing.
I agree with your wife, the states for sashing looks good. How's about the marpat (hope I spelt it right) for the backing?
good video hugs from pam keep it coming
Great teamwork, wifey was right on sashing. My concern would be how would the state sash look against a white T-Shirt if you plan to use one. You could bind with the other fabric or use it when you label it, kinda your brand or signature.

I think the States fabric balances the all the T-shirt colors better, but the MARPAT fabric better communicates "Manly Man".
I want to sew a quilt for my son cutting up his uniforms and I need help, where to start and pattern? Let’s make one!
Your quilt room, your rules! I have seen many beautiful t-shirt quilts that have random size blocks. Or you can do all blocks the same size. Or you can pick two sizes where 4 of the smaller sizes will sew up to a block the same as the larger size. There are no rules!
Use Pellon's SF101 to stabilize.
How about using the rest of the t-shirt to make the binding
I use the June Taylor T-shirt ruler
One block of marpat
The state sashing will be too busy and take the eye away from the T shirts...IJS...
