Hands down, you have the BEST expressions ever! "Hips and Valleys" "Braid the fabric like I'm braiding hair" "Respect the quarter inch!" I get "puckers"and we practice that expression "It will quilt out" and my favorite, "It is always faster to slow sew, rather than seam rip and sew again." You are so much fun to watch! Your directions are great, your presentation is fun, but I've learned a ton! Thanks!!!!!
Carol! Thanks so much for your kind words! Ha, I never even realized I say all of those things but I live (and sometimes die :) by each one! Thanks for watching!
I can't wait to give this a try. I have been tempted to make a quilt like this in the past, but had no clue how to sew the curves! You ROCK! Welcome to the MSQC family.
I'm a Man Quilter too, and it's exciting to know that there are more men out there who sew/quilt and are proud of it. Congrats on your RUclips channel, Rob! Can't wait to see what new things you bring every Monday! I must admit I am not a fan of curves, but I am willing to try this method you've shown. Maybe I've just been doing curves wrong, and this will change my mind.
Thanks Jose! I know there are amazing Man Quilter's out there! Most folks are scared of curves, but this method is manageable and remember, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT! :)
Finally a quilt that is different from the norm! Can' t wait to make this.( after watching the video a few hundred more times lol ) Thanks for a quilt design my grandson will love.
Great presentation........no long speech but taught just what we need to hear for repeating your idea............thanks for the help in getting new ideas............beautiful quilt in background.......
Brooke Cosper the quilt in the background can totally be replicated using this technique I shared today! I love to teach, so I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I enjoyed your tutorial and can't wait to see what you have coming up. Having three sons I'm always looking for quilts that appeal to men and this one is a must. Right now I'm looking for the right quilt design for my 18 year old who is graduating from HS. As others have said, you're a great teacher.
Thanks Camille! There will be some great projects your boys will love. Actually we'll be doing some great projects that anyone will love. Thanks for watching!
I've been looking for a more modern masculine quilt and I think this is the one. Your laid back style and admission that you get puckers makes for a great learning experience. Thanks.
Wow that is so liberating! I know I would have painstakingly tried to pin all those curves, and gotten frustrated for sure! But you made it easy and fun! Thanks to you and your friend who taught you this method! You rock!
lizzyanthus1 I'm so glad that you enjoyed this one! It's amazing what a few simple tricks can do! This was very time saving compared to how I used to do it! :)
I watch everything you do on The Quilt Show so it was a treat to see you have your own channel here. I have to say you do a great job of demonstrating Ricky's Cave Man quilting. So appropriate for Man Sewing. Looking forward to many more.
I love your tutorials! They are always fun and even if my mojo is flagging, your videos help me find it. I’ve got a miss mash of WOF pieces from other projects that are screaming for curved piecing. Thank you for this great tutorial.
I watched this video and immediately tried the technique. I am amazed that it is not as difficult as it appears. Thanks for your clear and easy demonstration.
LOVE that you suggested starting with a straight cut to make it easier on yourself when sewing. I can't wait to try improv curves in one of my next projects!
Rob, really enjoyed your tutorial. I've stayed away from curves because I thought they'd be too difficult, but you make it look very doable! I'm looking forward to more tips from you!
This is super awesome! I am a sewing instructor to teens and kids and the most challenging projects are with boys who feel like they are doing girly projects. Blankets and quilts are part of my upcoming curriculum and this will be soo helpful to introduce to the boys. I currently have quilts in my studio, with scallops and curved edges. I must say a bit feminine to most. But I am confident, doing a quilt like this - with boy patterns and colors will be intriguing to them and create diversity in my studio in which it is in need of! THANKS SEW MUCH!
That's so cool!!! You should totally send in pictures of your students work, we would all love to see! :) What a great skill to learn so young, love it!! Thanks for watching!! Glad I could help spark some ideas!!
I love your excitement in your presentation....it is infectious!! Love this idea....no pins...will have to give this a try! Thank you! Can't wait for next Monday to come to see what you have for us then!
This technique would be great to use for a scenery block. I can see trees appliqued on the sides of the block. Imagination can run wild with this one. Love it.
This is too cool. I love how this technique can be used in different applications! I'm totally going to use this to make the land and sky base of a quilt section I'm making with friends! We're all making a quarter section of a large quilt for another friends baby! I can't wait to practice!
Thanks Rob. I am making a quilt for my 20 year old son and I did not like the straight lines for him. These technique is exactly what I needed and the explanation was awesome.
Loved this tutorial and it really is as easy as you make it seem. The quilt I made with it is a huge success and I look like a rock star. Thank you, Rob Appell!!!!!!
You are awesome Rob and have inspired my imagination so much. I have so many ideas running around in my head. I love your free piecing. I have ordered Jean Wells book on it. Thank you so much Rob for all your sharing.
I love that technique.... I will try it tomorrow! I was looking at how to sew curves and was getting discouraged by the long and uninteresting process. Your technique makes it fun and the results seem so great! thanks.I love the colors of the quilt behind.... obviously very masculine but very refreshing too.
This is my favorite tutorial. I watched it when it first was shown on Missouri Star and have been sewing curves in my quilts and enjoying the process as well!
I like this! I love seeing new ideas, and you've definitely hit the nail on the head with this one. I can see doing this with a table runner, or placemats to start with! Maybe even some throw pillows! Love your fabric selection too! Thanks!
I searched for abstract art quilt techniques. To my surprise "Man Sewing" popped up along with others. Man Sewing is my favorite to learn techniques. therefore this tutorial looks pretty easy I will try today.
I'm working on a quilt with a rainbow and was looking for help to get my curves right since it is my own design. I never would have thought to cut the fabric together for a curve but that is such an awesome tip! I have a friend that is wanting a quilt in some really great black and white print fabric I have and I can totally see doing it in this style with a bit of color thrown in for fun. Thanks for the inspiration .
I subscribed when you first started but am more of a garment sewer so sort of moved onto other youtubers. Am currently doing some piecing from old fabric scraps to use for garment sewing and came across you again, and subscribed. Was thrilled when I saw your subscribers count ... well done!!! Love seeing talented people do well on here :).
Congratulations! I hope you will have success and fun, specially with Jenny Doan. I love her very much. God bless you and your family, Rob. Greetings from Germany.
Great presentation! Love the colours. My Bernina Machine has this knee operated device to lift the foot. So my hands don't leave the fabric. Helps a lot for projects like yours.
Man Sewing 30 years ago I was the only one here who bothered about sewing. Quilting wasn't really known. Now sewing is fashionable and Jenny has done great PR work for the quilting. Now I'm looking forward to your approach.
Wow! I'm so impressed with this video. I really enjoyed your easy technique. I'm sure going to give this a try. Congrats on your new channel and I pray it's a big success. I'll be sure to pass Man Sewing on!
OMG Rob, sewing those pieces isn't easy. But, I have to say that I love the layout, design and colors that you picked to make the quilt, it's perfect ! This makes such a beautiful gift for a man, it's has a masculine look all over it.
Rob- When you were sewing your 3rd curve piece onto your pieced block, I noticed that you placed that 3rd piece on bottom with done on top and ran it thru the machine. Thanks, Kimberly Anne! I'm glad I can help you build up the courage. Try it and let me know how it goes!
This guy is amazing. It's impossible to stitch curved seams but Rob does it and makes it so easy.
Thanks, Terri Goggin!! That's so nice of you!

Спасибо вам, милый человек! Влюбилась в ваши квадраты! Сшила! Заказчица в восторге!
Thanks, Rob, great tutorial. I watched it a few times and dove right in. Didn't do a practice piece and my piece turned out perfectly!
"Caveman style"! Love it! Cool technique Rob, thanks for the great video.
Haha thanks, Suds888! My language is always very technical ;)

I love this and will use it on my pillowcases that I make as gifts for this nursing home. Thank you so much 😘
What a fantastic exposition of this method. YOu made something that "seams" complicated. . . accessible.
I love your tutorials! They are always fun and even if my mojo is flagging, your videos help me find it. I’ve got a miss mash of WOF pieces from other projects that are screaming for curved piecing. Thank you for this great tutorial.
Great tutorial Rob. Keep up the good work.
I watched this video and immediately tried the technique. I am amazed that it is not as difficult as it appears. Thanks for your clear and easy demonstration.
Have fun curved piecing!
LOVE that you suggested starting with a straight cut to make it easier on yourself when sewing. I can't wait to try improv curves in one of my next projects!
Love this video . I haven't tried it yet but he makes it look so easy. His instructions are so complete !!!
Shared this video with my sister-in-law who is new as quilting and she did an amazing job. Thank you for sharing your talents with everyone.

Mission Accomplished then! You can definitely do it. Make sure and share a pic with us when you do it!
Glad you show us easy ways to do things that look difficult.
This video is excellent. The techniques taught make sewing curves so much easier.
Brilliant teacher, you have taught me so much. After dress making all my life, this is just therapeutic..
Looks tricky, but fun to try! Really like the look of the finished quilt.
You can do it!!

Gotta say, you’ve got some of the best tutorials out there! Thank you! So I followed along and tried the braiding and it worked like a miracle. 🤩
I wanted to add pictures of my first and 2nd tries, but it didn’t give me the option. Thx again!!
Wish you were still running this channel with fresh content.
This technique would be great to use for a scenery block. I can see trees appliqued on the sides of the block. Imagination can run wild with this one. Love it.
Such a great imagination! Appliquéd trees on one of these blocks would be fantastic!!

This has GOT to be the neatest way, of joining curves, I've ever seen!
I love that technique.... I will try it tomorrow! I was looking at how to sew curves and was getting discouraged by the long and uninteresting process. Ho-leeee-crow! I've allllways stayed away from curves... but gosh Rob!!! I'm gonna have to do this!!! Way cool! Thank you so much!

I love solid color quilts. This is a must do quilt for my list. Thank you so much for the great easy instructions!
I searched for abstract art quilt techniques. To my surprise "Man Sewing" popped up along with others. Man Sewing is my favorite to learn techniques. therefore this tutorial looks pretty easy I will try today.
Awesome, Angela! I'm happy to hear you enjoy the tutorials! I can't wait to see what you create!

this was amazing because as a sewer of clothes, I am so used to clipping curved seams before I press them open. What a revelation this is!!
You make it seam so easy...I just tried and ended up in a mud hole..BUT I will try again in the morning..thanks for a great lesson!
You can do it, Sharon! Keep on practicing! Let me know if you have any questions!
Kinda looks like flowing, hummmmm giving me all kinds of ideas!! Thanks for this
Congratulations! I hope you will have success and fun, specially with Jenny Doan. I love her very much.
God bless you and your family, Rob. Greetings from Germany.
Thanks!! I've already had a blast with Jenny, can't wait to do more collaborations with her!
love this pattern...already made a beautiful wall hanging for a friend......now doing a table runner for spring
Thanks for making curves look easy enough for me to try. They have always intimidated me and now I feel like I can do it. :D
Looks super fun! I may use this technic for a quilt for my granddaughter and her hubby.
Super tutorial - going to look at all of your tutorials. I've enjoyed the last hour of checking them out. Good stuff.
You make this look sooo easy! Can't wait to try it.
Let us know what you think of this method!! We would love to hear!!
Great presentation! Love the colours. My Bernina Machine has this knee operated device to lift the foot. So my hands don't leave the fabric. Helps a lot for projects like yours.

This was so helpful!! Thank you!
I love this technique. I will definitely be using it to make landscape type quilts.
Wow! I'm so impressed with this video. I really enjoyed your easy technique. I'm sure going to give this a try. Congrats on your new channel and I pray it's a big success. I'll be sure to pass Man Sewing on!
Thanks, Dean!! That means a lot! Let me know what you think of the technique when you try it! :)
Great Job Rob!! It's nice to make easy quilts once in awhile :) Keep up the good work.
vickie vandyken I'm glad you think this technique is easy! It's really fun when you get into it!
This is a great tut, love how you sewed those curves! Thanks excited to give this a try!
"it'll quilt out" - I love that! beautiful quilt :)
I luv your tutorials. AWESOME!!!!!
Thanks, Brenda!! Stay tuned for more fun projects!!
OMG Rob, sewing those pieces isn't easy. But, I have to say that I love the layout, design and colors that you picked to make the quilt, it's perfect ! This makes such a beautiful gift for a man, it's has a masculine look all over it.
Hi *****!! Thanks for watching, we're so glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
Awesome thank you soo much. Definitely going to use this technique in next years charity quilts.
I need to try this after I am finished 2 other quilts! lol love your technique!
This is an excellent tutorial in curved piecing. Thank you ever so much!
Thank you Rob this is a brilliant tutorial you really make it look so easy (smile)
Fantastic tho daunting to even think about trying :) It reminds me of the sand art from when i was a girl. soo awsome!
Rob-
When you were sewing your 3rd curve piece onto your pieced block, I noticed that you placed that 3rd piece on bottom with done on top and ran it thru the machine. Wouldn't it be easier to add it to the top or do you have a reason for adding it on bottom?
Love the quilt! There is so much free-thinking potential behind it!
Great Question, and if I understand correctly, it was so that the machine started on the 2" straight cut to help with the alignment, and therefor the bulk of the rest of the piecing was laying out of the machine. I am a bit of a wild bull at the machine, so after years of piecing, my eye looks at the edges of the fabric at the edge of the foot (or what you use for alignment and measuring) so I am only looking at the the edges. Your idea makes perfect sense cause you probably like the "biggest piece" on your feed dogs.... always a good idea.
Man Sewing Ah! I got it- makes perfect sense. Thanks!
Rob, I saw you on the MSQC video, every since i have been a subscriber. I live in Chandler AZ (Pheonix area). Since I live in a valley i'm pretty sure its called hills and valleys not hips and valley. Some girls might not like that lol. Here it's Mountains and valley lol. Thanks for the great vid. I'm a fan of Ricky Tims too. I subscribe to The Quilt Show too.
Thanks for watching, Robin Marcum!! Thank you for the helpful feedback as well! I use terms that I've picked up from other hobbies and that can get me in trouble!! Here's where I get that term!! www.home-building-mentor.com/hip-and-valley-roof.html Thanks again!!
Thanks for the information on sewing curves!
Great video to learn wave quilting. Respect the quarter inch while using no pins?🙄 on waves, very brave. I will try this but will be using 📌
SUPER BELLISSIMO COMPLIMENTI DEVO PROVARLO GRAZIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
exactly what I need - presented in way even I can understand. THANK YOU
Thanks for the helpful tips! Can't wait to try this now!
Hi I enjoy see all your way and tutorials I tryed this curves piecing and I practice but my work did some like not flat over some stripes. When i did ironing its not getting flat What u think is my foult??? thanks again for your timming
Great quilt, Rob! Love your new channel and can't wait to see more!
I'm already having a blast, can't wait for what's up ahead!! Anything particular you would like to see in a tutorial?
Yours looks so good! I can't figure out how to keep it from puckering.
Love Ricky Tims as well.
I'm impressed!
Thanks, Sheila!! Is this a quilt you would try to make?
Not sure. I'm a pretty traditional quilter; but, I'm picturing the curved blocks cut diagonally as I might for a string quilt. Sashing between the blocks to give the eyes a place to rest...hmmmm...
That would be a pretty cool take on this quilt!
your really good at teaching thanks for this video
elvishmyst That's so nice of you to say! Thanks!
oooh Rob, thank you sooo much!
hi Rob. love your show. I saw the one with your daughter. she was making a doll blanket. you had a 1/4 inch thing on your machine so it was easier for her to keep a 1/4 inch. what was it , and where can I get one..keep on quilting......
I am going to try this method on the music quilt I'll be making. Trouble is I need to have 5 identical soft curving lines across the entire width of the fabric. Wish me luck! Any suggestions?
Great tutorial! Would be a way to showcase some fabrics that have medium to large size prints.
this helped a lot, thank you so much!
This is awesome. Is there a way to do this via paper/foundation piecing?
+LaWanda Stewart you would think that there was, but we'll have to look into it. This is the best method that we know for curved piecing.
GREAT thank you so much for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Have you ever tried this by stitching an undulating line first and then cutting the fabric?
Yes, I reserve that for the spikes on my dino costume. It requires given take from each fabric to press the seam flat without pockets, or spikes.
