      Yes! Sometimes it just needs a little longer to "wake up." 🙌

    I keep all my yeast in the freezer. I keep my use jar in the fridge. When I fill the jar I put the rest of the bag in a freezer bag and back in the freezer. I do this all the time and it works great. I bought alot of yeast in 2016 cause it was a good price. I am using that yeast now, it got me through the pandemic when no one could find yeast and I still have quite a bit. Freezing does keep it perfect! Great way to share how to test yeast!

    About 3 years ago I opened a packet of yeast [ approx. half litre volume. Never made bread before but that, with the plandemic thought it might be a good habit. But I didnt follow through, yeast in tupperware, in fridge 3 years. Your vid inspired me to test it. I used 1/4 cup luke warm water. Teaspoon white sugar. 2 tspns yeast. Set the timer 10 minutes. Yes, reaction [small to moderate ten minutes]. As i cooked the main meal, it sat their a bit longer [10-15m more]... it went ballistic and foamed up big time. Watched a vid where lady used 8 year old yeast and it worked. Others say freeze it.
    Made my first bread today in 3 years [with bakers flour]. It would be a failure by bakers standards, but even a home made flop is better than supermarket bread. Scrumptous bread on 3 yr old yeast. Ate so.much could nit stop. Hope that feedback helps someone. Thanks for the vid... great encouragement to get back into it.

      Yes! Old yeast just needs a little time. Thanks for sharing!

    When I have yeast that is almost dead, meaning it bubbles just a little, I put it back in the freezer and use it in a sourdough starter. I find it helps my starter get going quicker.

    I have had the same yeast in the freezer for years since covid started I wonder if it's still good or not that's why I was watching your video

      I would guess yes, but it may take longer to "proof." I would definitely do the test in this video before trying to bake with it just to be sure. :)

    Are the 'Red Star' packets considered vacuum sealed?

    • @foodprepguide
      @foodprepguide  9 месяцев назад

      It looks like some are and some aren't. If the package is "rock hard," then they're vacuum sealed. It looks like their 1 and 2-lb packages are vac sealed.

      @@foodprepguide I tested the yeast much like what you did. I waited three times as long as I needed and neither one grew much. I have new yeast. It's in a jar and in the frig.

    Have you ever considered gathering yeast the old way? In the Pacific Northwest we hippies go out into the nature to do this.

      I’ve read about how to do it, but I’ve never tried. I definitely want to someday. 🙂 Do you have any tips to share?

    What about when bakers warn to not over proof your dough? Have you covered this already?

    • @foodprepguide
      @foodprepguide  27 дней назад

      No, I haven’t discussed that in a video. I’m not an expert baker, so I wouldn’t have the best advice here. 🙂
      I only bake for my family, and I tend to take a “it doesn’t have to be perfect” approach lol.

    Can you use athlete’s foot fungus as a substitute for yeast?
