      I would even say that a not professional model or a model without experience would need more. Not only for encouragement, but to interpret the photographer artistic view for the shoot, otherwise both parties can end up frustrated with the end result.

    This challenge explains why every season of ANTM could have been 100 times better, also far less awkward and uncomfortable. The models could actually learn so much more if they are treated with respect and as a equal, within a work environment. Both the Model and the Photographer have ideas and input that is valid, which makes things flow in a natural way.

    You should do this again with a prof model that isn't a close friend, who doesn't know your session style as well and see if the difference is more striking. The first session is more stagnant, and the second more dynamic because the model was having to come up with stuff on her own as opposed to getting direction. A model probably wouldn't just start walking away from the photographer on their own, so that was the main difference I could see between the two sessions. The first was just a little more stale, stiff, and stagnant, but she still looks amazing because you're a great photographer, still catching good angles and lighting, and she's a stunning woman.

    The best way I can word the difference is the “ignoring” ones are more * *stiff* * ... the “talking” ones are more fluid, flowing... natural? Goes to show the energy flow between the photographer and the model IS tangible in the resulting photos! U can feel the energy; the interaction and movement, the back and forth...
    **edit: just realized: speaking of “flow”, it seems that bc modeling/ photography of people involves both parties, the collaboration and connection between them is KEY to achieving and working from the “flow state”... flow state is when a person becomes fully immersed and focused on the activity they’re doing, almost a meditative state, forgetting the world around u- usually something creative/ a passion...
    So, while a painter can achieve flow state alone, bc it’s just you and your paints; a model (& photographer) need eachother to get to that state- because of the collaborative nature of their art form! Both people need to be in that zone, by being on the same wavelength, understanding the vision, and working together to fulfill it... then when they get into that state, it’s probably even more magical since it’s shared!

    I actually loved the shots where it was silent shooting! Then again, Jessica has a lot of experience and initiative to think fast in the moment so I don’t doubt that she’s able to get stunning shots regardless. But this is so good for novice or experienced models alike, even ones we’ve shot with multiple times. Despite the challenge, this just goes to show that good model/photog chemistry exists and *can* go unspoken if necessary. Super cool video (:

    The undirected photos look sexier or more like it could go in a fashion or sales catalog. The one in the lower left corner looks like it's selling high end perfume imo. The directed ones are more demure and feminine with an artistic direction. They tell a story. I think it's interesting. She's a good model with a lot of experience, you can tell

  • @hellaSwankkyToo
    @hellaSwankkyToo 2 года назад

    OMG not even a question! there’s a noticeable difference + it’s mostly in the vibe of the shots, her energy; way more confidence + self-assuredness comes through in the second set of shots.
    sometimes that’s all directing is - giving your subject feedback, communicating w| them, letting ‘em know that they’re on the right track, doing the right thing, that what they’re giving is working; it’s something subjects need to continue to excel.
    that’s easily my least fav thing about being in front of the camera - not knowing if what i’m doing, what i’m giving in my head is coming through on screen, looks how i imagine it does in the frame, etc.
    feedback, direction, is so vital + so necessary to bring out the very best. great challenge + video.

    Btw she's gourgeous and it's crazy how the first session looks more distant and the second looks so much more connected, like the face is looking at the camera more idk how to explain it but they look different

    PROPER communication is so important! One time, someone was taking photos for me and my friends, and didn’t direct us for the longest time. Let me tell you, saying “you guys just look awkward” is not a good way to direct people

  • @scarlettfrancesca
    @scarlettfrancesca 2 года назад +2

    This was really awesome. I've been a model for about 10 years and it is astonishing how infrequent photographers actually talk, communicate and direct. I always tell them ahead of time, please do this with me, it's very helpful because it can look good to me, doesn't mean it looks good on the camera so please let's work together.
    They always agree and then they just start shooting and it becomes a really awkward silent experience. I wish that wasn't the case and that people really understood how to work with people to have collaborative artistic creations!

    Such a good model!! The way that she creates interesting and dynamic shapes even when no one is directing at all. She did a great job. But it is amazing to see how much more comfortable and free a shoot is when there is direction. The jobs of both a model and Photographer and both so important and this was such a good video.

    Even me knowing you were doing the challenge, I felt so awkward just watching. The tension was weird af!
    Made me wonder what kind of photographers would shoot quiet (with a model), and if they're successful at all? 🤔
    For me, before a shoot i almost always have coffee or something where I meet the model and we talk, exhange ideas, etc so we are both on the same page, and then let them do their thing with MINOR adjustments. I wanna be surprised with what they do, and I want them to be surprised with what I got, and how i make them look in the end.
    So for the most part, there's barely talking, just little "yes, wow, that's incredible, can we do that again? Wow, what was that? Unreal." Etc. For the most part i have music playing to set the mood.
    If I'm working with someone I picked, I know I can trust them with what to do because of the conversations I've had with them earlier, the references I've shown them, and their work that I've seen before. We both come out with something we didn't quite expect.

    It was great seeing how you direct your models. Yes. It makes a HUGE difference!! I always directed in my photo shoots and my clients always looked like models. I saw lots of tears of happiness afterwards.
    I found that everyone (even those who modeled as a career) appreciated and loved the direction, because it made a huge difference in their outcome. I can see what they look like in camera and can make even the littlest adjustment change the whole image. Most people don’t know what to do with themselves (I wouldn’t know what to do if/when I’m photographed) because you have no idea what you look like, what the camera sees. Lol. I’d always start the session with “follow my direction, you may feel like this can’t POSSIBLY look cute because you feel awkward but trust yourself and me!” The results were amazing with so much connection in their eyes! I loved it!! (Thanks for this! Makes me want to shoot again…)

    was curious to see both sets since a lot of comments seem to prefer the non-talking set as a whole but their favorite is in the talking set. For me it‘s the talking set through and through. The lighting is captured so much nicer because you could advice her where to go and where to look. So even if some poses are similar they just look softer and less tense because the shadow feels more controlled and doesn‘t cut into the poses as sharply. (english isn‘t my mothetounge so I hope that makes sense)
    She‘s clearly a pro though but so are you! The results speak for themselves :D

    As a model I believe that communication between the photographer and the model is really important. Cause you don't see yourself when you're posing so you don't really know how your body is positioned and if it's looking good. That's why the feedback from the photographer is so important. Cause they will say things like "move your head a little bit" and that's what makes the perfect shot!

    i have been freelance modelling for a couple of years now in the ph and i remember one shoot i did with a photographer that left with me not being as content or fulfilled at the end of the day bc the photographer who invited me was barely talking, not even directing me much. while it gave me a lot of freedom, it was quite stressful bc i didnt know if how i imagined the shots to look actually came out the same from the photographer's pov. so this is really great, i hope more people in the community get to see this!

    It's very clear from this experiment that you need 100 from the model and 100 from the photographer! And not just rely one one for a successful shoot. It's a collaboration, always. It's so important for the photographer to direct as even though the models can pose, the photographers are the one who can see what it actually looks like on camera and know what would look good realistically.

    Obviously everyone else has already commented on it. But it shows how much of a difference there is in between photographs when the photographer gives direction and when they don’t. That a model should know how to model, style, direct, and light her self like America’s next top model promotes is a fallacy. Frankly the second set of photos were immensely better. Though she’s an excellent model communication really helped. And the second set I feel like you could pull a couple of those photos and they could’ve been an ad campaign for Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci or another high-end brand. They look very editorial.
