Whilst listening to this I went back in and pulled off my numbers since I started reselling as a business in August. I'm not in huge numbers as I was mostly focused on learning the market, what I could source, etc around my full time salaried job. What I'm finding most interesting is the months I thought were my worst months weren't as bad as I thought. The numbers may have been similar to when I first started, but the average sale price increased and, month-on-month, my cost of goods reduced as my sourcing and time invested got better, so the profit margin was greater. That's very reassuring as I keep moving forwards!
That's why we got to look at the numbers, without it we never know.

I base everything I do in my new store according to Tech's so real and honest words to give me a boost and know a lot more if I didn't have Tech to guide me. I'm more confident opening my eBay store. Wednesday night's Q&A ( 3.13.24), I asked why am I so nervous and why do I keep delaying the Ebay train? My feelings have changed bc Tech replied to my question, and he said, "Just Do It" and to let him know next Wednesday how I'm doing. This is all I needed to hear. So, I'll be in touch next Wednesday with great news Tech. Choo Choo! All Aboard! Thanks Tech and Mrs. Tech

I have really been focusing on broadening my mix thanks to the calls this week. I was starting to get heavy on jackets and button-up shirts. So I started adding shorts and leggings to the mix while still picking up the button-up shirts and jackets. I am also starting to pick up hats as well. Better mix of quality products that people want means more opportunities to grow.

I also love Calendars! But since my start of last year I have been keeping a separate monthly selling record where I record sales and the date of that month and total net sales amount after subtracting cost of goods with each sale. It’s all in a notebook 📓. Maybe I need to convert to Calendar next year! But the notebook still works well! I try to keep mental notes and write some notes on what was selling for those months and what I need to source to prepare for those months. 🙏. I’m at 9 months reselling! 🎉 Started the last week of July last year 2023. Looking forward to seeing the numbers for every month and for the full 1 year. It's normal fluctuation in seasonality. We are in business for 12 months.

So much to consider and learn along the way. I’m just starting out and have focused on sourcing profitable items but really need to learn the numbers as you say. Kind of makes my eyeballs knock together thinking about it😂 but it’s great advice and this is going to my next baby step. Thanks again for useful information.
Takes time, just improve every day
I personally have never experienced a summer slowdown. I've had a couple weeks of slow sales from time to time but what business doesn't experience moments of that. So long as you're sourcing great items at a low cost and there's a customer base for those items You should have pretty consistent sales all year round.

@@rosep5502I sell in about 20 different categories and I do sell clothing however I stick to shirts sweatshirts and sport jerseys which consistently sell year-round.

Why is my summer slowdown on march and February? Summer is always good for me weird🤔

@@technsports the reason i ask this is because you talked about stores with no slowdowns and im trying to be like that so the logic is sell items for every season and i do but ebay limits me on February and march and i have a lot of spring wear weird 🤔

Hey Tech, keep up the awesome work with the videos. I have a quick question for your next video, can you please tell me what me what you can do in the event of illness when it comes to meeting your handling time limit? As a sole operator, what would I do in the event of sudden illness to get an extension to the handling time? Thanks for your help.
You'd have to extend the handling time or have redundancies in effect, such as somebody 100% dependable - friend, family, somebody that is trained and can take over the day to day when you are down.
At the very least, have somebody trained who knows how to change the handling time.
Have a written process for them to follow
So for your business you only use an aged inventory marked down strategy during the poor performing months and good performing months you let it ride at the normal price no matter the age of the item?
Ehhh kind of yes kind of no. I do my most aggressive mark downs on aged inventory in the summer time would be the most correct
@@technsports So to clarify, as an example, might look like something like Good months: 90 days+ 20%, 180 days+ 30%, 270 days+ 40% and in Bad months: 90 days+ 30%, 180 days+ 40%, 270 days+ 50%
Kind of like two different tiers of markdowns based on the slow times of your business?

Maybe not those days & those percentages but yes exactly that
I know in the past you've spoken on your business and how you did 10% flat promoted listings on most items. Do you have an automated promoted listings campaign with a set rate for most items and then individually selecting the promotion rate for the items that you find you don't need promoted listings on? Or do you just stick with that 10% flat rate for everything?
When I had 50,000+ items every thing was a blanket policy. There was no time left in the day for me to be onesy twosy about anything.
Did I promote stuff that had a 100%± sell through that maybe didn't need promoted? Absolutely, but that was part of such a large amount of listings going up on a daily basis.
The way I looked at it, I was paying $100,000 for an extra or additional $1,000,000 in sales.

Thank you for answering the question about off season inventory. I was actually curious about that. Do you then include those items in your mark down strategy or do you hold off until you see they are not selling as well in their peak season?
I do but they still sell, maybe not 100% perfect situation, but jackets still sell year round & I work everything off of averages.
All the money in winter time, most or some of the money in the summer.
At the end of the day bank account goes up

This one really hit me hard tech. Your message matches the data. While others are quick to bash eBay, you point to a graph and say...Look! Sales velocity is year to year is heating up! Thank you for the Keep Pushing! mentality.
It will continue to trend up as online sales continue to increase and shopping pre owned because more accepted, however I think the lion share of that increase will continue to go to a small percentage of the sellers

I have an awesome hat deep dive in the group, a lady this week watched it and sold a hat for $500 and it sold in 3 hours. A guy watched it last week and sold a hat fro $500 in one day.

@technsports I absolutely will! I have begun and also have decided to put a hold on some things I am now learning was wrong so I can turn this business around. I have to admit, I am a broke reseller, but I am going to change my ways. I'm listening to Techonomics right now.
A few graphs i would be interested to see is the Returns and INAD claims over time. Or the Ebay fees charged to buyers, items sold to profit made by Ebay. Since they started payment processing and added promoted listings. If Ebays sales are double and returns are up double sounds the same to me. Would love that data. Lots of good info for beginner's that Dont understand supply and demand or market cycles.
You'd probably have to buy some stock and become a shareholder and get invited to the shareholder meetings
I think I will pass on the Ebay stock purchase for now. To slow of a ROI. Plus not convinced on the current management and Ceo in place. Much better ROI selling on the platform. Maybe though for the data
I have a question about sourcing summer items right now. Thrifts are expensive in my area, so I have to be careful with what I buy and comp things out before I buy. How can I know how much a pair of shorts or a t shirt or whatever summer item will sell for and how fast they will sell when I can only see the past 3 months of data on my phone?
