Anyone quitting their job to source used goods to resell on eBay etc. so they aren't tied down ,is in for a very big surprise. You will be more tied down then you have ever been. Whether it's responding to a message, shipping a package, listing, organizing, cleaning and prepping, sourcing, research, photographing, making drafts, sending offers , editing listings while relaxing in bed, you're always dabbling into some sort of reselling related task. Now that you are a business owner you're stuck doing everything. It's so much more work if it will be your only source of income , because your success is critical to support your family.

I really appreciate these videos, thank you. I am selling full time and it came from long years of experience with my mom, who was an eBay pro seller 35 years ago. She passed in 2023 and the day before she died, I shipped her last orders for her. She was 89 years old. Pretty amazing. She loved it. A lot has changed during those times, but I'm still determined to do well. Thanks for your videos, I love them.

What many folks don't realize, selling on Ebay either as a full-time seller, or a part-time seller, is WORK and TIME. The commercials that sing and dance their way into claiming it's so easy and so fast....they're lying. If I ever think to start singing and dancing......oh yeah, in 20+ years, that's never happened.

Yes it is work, sourcing is the fun part, but it is work. You just don't list an item and forget it. You have to maintain your items on selling platforms and market products or yourself.

Yes, it's a lot of work. I have a full-time job and thought I could do this for a few extra bucks. Well, it is so time-consuming that it became two full-time jobs. I literally had to stop myself because I was burning out fast. I had to force myself to do this "just" part-time.

    • @DeborahAiles
      @DeborahAiles 5 месяцев назад

@@debbiegonzales8035 I did it with a full time job for years. Sometimes up all night packing, then go to my regular job. It was a struggle. Eventually, I had to decide which one to keep. Ebay. Then husband became more ill. HE was full time job, and I still did Ebay. He's been gone almost 2 years. I do Ebay to get rid of SO much stuff we collected, he collected, and his parents collected....and to supplement my income. Bad knees and all.

I did it full time and it wasn't for me. I could absolutely have afforded to do that, but I didn't like the uncertainty of income amounts. I run a single-parent household so there is no backup if I had a down month and even with an emergency fund I didn't feel safe financially. I went back to full time work and part time (or hobby) selling. This is best for me at this time. Once my kids are out of the house it may change, but for now I prefer part time as extra income.

I became a full time reseller about 2 years ago. I had lost my job of over 18 years almost 6years ago. But I'm lucky enough to have a husband, who by luck, ended up getting a significant raise that covered what I lost from my job. I tried doing a couple different things but fell into reselling because I found videos like yours on You Tube and though, "Hey I can do that!" LOL. He likes to help me on weekends going to estate sales to source. It's fun for us. Almost like a date. :) Thanks for all your videos!

I'm single/no kids and I graduated nursing in 2017. I basically had a mental breakdown from working on a covid unit through the pandemic and the fallout on the rest of the industry. I quit my job back in November. I knew I had to quit before I wound up doing something I would regret.
When I ragequit I did intend on looking for another job soon. I doubt it'll be sustainable for me to resell full time, I don't have any money issues or debt but I also have very poor time management skills, poor life skills, and poor money management skills. I'm one of those young people whose parents micromanaged and insisted on doing everything for them so now I'm just drifting through life unsure of what to do with myself and I lack a lot of basic coping skills. Full time reselling requires a lot of drive and motivation that I just don't have. I can be honest enough with myself to admit that!

My reselling journey started 2.5 years ago when I had a layoff scare. I figured I needed a backup plan. We've grown so much in reselling we need a new house to do it properly. The last 2.5 years of reselling made getting a new place possible, we close on our new place in 2 weeks. Currently I'm 2 to 4 years from retirement, im looking forward to retiring and having reselling supplement my income from retirement...plus it'll keep me active. My wife has said about our reselling journey "Why didn't we start this sooner?". We do the reselling bit together and enjoy this endeavor. Keep up the content Kevin, we enjoy each video.

I sell a lot of books, dvds, cds. I’ve started listing clothes I have with tags on them still. It’s been hard emotionally. But we never got the time to get to use all these things. Sometimes I sell 16 items over the weekend but now I sell one or two items per day. Lately it’s slowed down. I don’t have the audience that you do. 😂. Thanks for all you do. I am a full time reseller on my own. I have no spouse to split the bills with; I have no employees. Truth is, reselling is not dead and you can still make great money doing it. The other truth is; you will need to work harder than most other resellers to make it in todays world (to pay all your bills). If you are old enough to already have equity built ($700 mortgage on a house) then it will be much easier to do reselling full time.
The younger people (around 35 and younger) are going to have a much harder time becoming a full time reseller. The cost of everything is out of control and the truth is that you need to make a lot of money just to pay the bare minimum bills. The older people definitely don't want to hear this but its just facts. Todays average rent prices are more than what mortgages were just 10 years ago. $1,400/mo for renting a 1 bedroom is high and is the new normal. Food is also outrageously expensive.
My point is this; the money thats required to pay the bare minimum bills have double or even tripled since even 10/15 years ago. A $90k salary in some states will barely cover monthly bills with no debt and just paying rent.
A mortgage on a reasonably priced house (200-250k) is over $2k monthly ($0 down). $2,000 is a lot more than $700.....

    • @gulfcoastsunset5879
      @gulfcoastsunset5879 5 месяцев назад

YES this comment 1000%. We as a family of 4 became debt free 2 years ago and are currently looking to buy our "forever home" we're done moving and the only thing around here that currently has a $700 mortgagee is a doublewide. And I mean absolutely NO disrespect when I say this, but the days of mortgages under $1000 are almost unheard of - even in rural areas here in SC the land alone is a 150K for about 1 acre and that's without the house, garage, shed, or anything- not even excavated and home ready... JUST the land itself. So for us right now trying to buy is becoming increasingly difficult $450K+ is the new 250K. its SO sad but true- it makes us feel so defeated, but we are trying to stay positive and openminded to different properties and loan options.
Kevin ,you are so lucky/ blessed to have bought when you did and to stay debt free- it's a real feat - you should be incredibly proud of yourself! 👏 I love seeing your beautiful property, animals and family- you are truly living the dream!
Cheers and blessings to anyone reading this! ✨

Thanks Kevin for your videos. Mom was a teacher in the 80s and 90s, was a director for 3 elementary school and was fired because an employee was stealing. She didnt make much but she worked hard and cared about the kids. She worked a 2nd at Sears. After the divorce, her job and losing her dad and brother, her cancer came back and took her away (Stress was too much on her) . I learned the value of hard work and honesty from her. I had shined away from sales because i had the "perception" that you have to BS to make a sale. But, when I started reselling as a hobby to teach kids about business and money, I started to have fun with it and now I'm a Part-Time reseller for 3 years now.

you good sir earned a new sub!, I am looking into this as a hobby mainly for fun (Also for the wife to take on so she can be at home for the kiddos). I do have a lot of access to thrift stores where I am located and was just there the other day. Its amazing what you can find and the most important part is never stop learning! I found some van shoes that looked awesome and i was humming and hawing on weather or not to put them in my cart. To get a 30% discount i was just under what i needed at the checkout so i quickly ran over and threw the shoes on as a freebie. Glad i did! The vans were iron maiden 2006 (limited editions) in really good shape and have a resale value used of 170.00 cad. I think the most important part is understanding that all revenue is unrealized until you get the sales and this doesn't just happen over night you need to build up a following/integrity just like any new business. Happy Hunting! Thanks for sharing.

I work part time to full time hours, depending on my family's schedule. My husband is the main breadwinner, with his income paying the bills and providing healthcare, 401K, etc.
As far as margins and sourcing, I think the key right now is diversifying your options. I source from a variety of places, and find that my margins are just as good as ever, if not better. If I'm sourcing at thrift stores, I utilize every tool to save, including discount days, loyalty programs, etc. The thrift stores around me are jam-packed with stuff, so its not hard to find good inventory. But I also source from online estate auctions, and have gotten so much from those companies, at very good margins. If you limit yourself to your neighborhood Goodwill...you might be suffering right now. But if you branch out and find other ways to source...your business is probably doing just fine.

I think you get out of anything exactly what you put into it. You have a knack for story telling - your stories are about your selling...and people like to listen to you, therefor you have followers.
I still miss the introduction when you talked about the kids (family) being the most important thing to you.
Reselling works for me because I can take time away when needed - but thats because I have kept my full time job for the benefits. With back to back weddings of 2 of our six kids this year, I ended my 500 listings and took a step back. I plan to relist many items after the second wedding and time allows it.
I will continue to tune in to your channel as often as I can, because no matter what anyone says about your sales being based on your social media presence or not, I enjoy your stories.
Thanks Kevin for being entertaining while teaching me things I am interested in - one reason why I resell...as a hobby...because it's fun...and if you like what you do you will never work a day in your life.

I taught kindergarten in a private school and I waitressed and delivered pizzas after teaching all day just to make it. I then started selling on ebay in 2013 and that became my supplemental income. The school I taught at closed permanently in 2016 so it was easy to jump into selling full time. My husband quit his job in 2017 and we did the reselling thing together. We moved to a different part of the country and it was too hard to get started reselling in the area so he got a job. We had a baby in 2020, I still resell and he has the same job. We're able to make it comfortably with me staying home and reselling. I wish he was able to resell full time but he doesn't have the knack like me and it just wouldn't work.

SO, I decided to invest myself into a full-time reselling adventure.. now my wife and I are together everyday working our asses of going to yard, garage sales as well as thrift stores here in el paso tx. Our bills were set that we could always pay the bills if one of us lost our job. I have a large amount of inventory to start but am going to do eBay full time, RUclips for reselling and another channel with Bible teachings. I am super excited. I don’t know about the future but I want a substantial eBay business whether I go back to work or not.

I agree that people need to study the profession before going full throttle reselling, I’ve spent years studying, learning, looking at local reselling possibilities, I’ve been selling certain items on fbmp and am making decisions on where to sell some big ticket items.I have another35 year old highly successful small business, collecting social security, and doing reselling on the side of all that. Eventually reselling will move up in importance. I’m taking the slower road only cuz I can, I know some do this in urgency thru loss of a job, etc….I have watched some resellers and the amt of time spent on social media varies. I’m sure it does help reselling. Take care.

I resell what I want, spending as much time as I feel like, because I do have a pension coming in, after a retirement. That pension provides the security to not “have to” meet any specific reselling goals or income.

I started reselling after I got injured at work and was on a LOA. I tried a youtube channel for awhile, but the amount of time it took compared to what I got out of it, was not worth it for me. I could make more money reselling with the time it took me to record edit upload, etc.

I'm a thrifter of a narrow focus......art supplies . Then I produce a piece of art and put it on sale at the summer art markets I participate in. Every once in a while I hit the holy grail such as 2 packs of craft blank cards with envelopes that I'll paint into cute watercolor cards. They sell like hotcakes. So I keep myself in art supplies and sell enough to buy more supplies!!!! I live way below my means, live on social security, no debt, and enjoy the social interaction at estate sales, garage sales, etc. Love your channel!!!!

My spouse got laid off due to pandemic but could not stay home needs that social interaction plus money for bills and not interested in work at home. I have sold things out of this house for gas or grocery because he buried us in debt but i sold on craigs list and did well. There is issues why we were deep in debt so i started selling things being i am unable to work so i guess i am a part time reseller and my house is my best picks after years of collecting with thoughts of increasing my buyer market as it is time for so many things to go bye bye. Thanks for your honesty. 😊😊😊😊

I grew up being a picker and have a ton of knowledge of items. I also know where to find the information on items I come across in my picking journey. What I have learned a ton about in the last year or so was about clothing, which was not my knowledge base well not of hot brands. I have purchase clothing most of my life at thrift stores but brand never mattered to me if it fit and I like it I would purchase it, which is not the way to sell clothing online.

I am part of one of those couples, actually celebrating our anniversary tomorrow, who are both retired and home 'all day.' My husband is an actual retired rocket scientist from Redstone Arsenal in Alabama and I retired from a marketing career to go full time as a wedding cake decorator. I sold on ebay and Poshmark on the side. When Covid shut down the wedding industry, I made the decision to sell all of my cake 'tools' and invest in inventory to sell and storage shelves. We were in a good financial position to be able to make these decisions. But it took planning to get there. It wasnt just a 'hey lets see how this goes' thing. I think I work harder now that I have at any other time in my life! And thats ok. My grandparents taught me that you dont get what you wish for, you get what you work for.

I would LOVE to quit my job and do reselling full time. I was an auto mechanic and now do industrial maintenance and I am so tired of breaking down my body to make these other companies millions of dollars by keeping their junk equipment running (which produces the products that we all buy). I have loved reselling since I was a kid when mom and dad had garage sales two to three times a year. When I got older (high school age or so) I started buying stuff and reselling on Craigslist back in the day. Kevin, I have learned so much from watching you and your videos. I have tried to watch others but for some reason you are my favorite (sorry that sounds creepy)! I can only dream of doing reselling full time and maybe someday being able to meet some fellow resellers. So for now, I watch The Commonwealth Picker as I package up orders and I sit here and dream of one day, maybe just one day….i can do this full time. Thanks for the great content, the history you throw in, your family interaction, your heart felt emotions and the generosity that you bring to your channel.

Our situation is somewhat unique. I am retired military, and began reselling as something that my wife and I to do together to make extra money. It is my primary employment now, but I wouldn’t classify it as “full time”, although there are definitely weeks that we log 40+ hours each on the business. For us, it was an easy decision, because we already have pension / benefits to cover the main expenses . We don’t really want to expand beyond eBay into RUclips, Whatnot, etc. at this point, because of the extra time it entails. We enjoy the “thrill of the hunt” at yard sales and thrift shops, and don’t want to get too big where it consumes all of our time. Honestly, I don’t think I would enjoy reselling as much if I had to depend on it to pay the mortgage and put food on the table. Probably the same reason I didn’t become a professional poker player 😀

My job before retirement paid over 100k a year but cost me 2 knee replacements and countless years of aches and pains. If I knew the potential of eBay I would have quit 15 years earlier. I wouldn’t do anything but eBay I just love the hunt and hustle. Dave should never give advice on reselling he doesn’t have that instinctual knowledge to be really good. Every item he picks up he’s on his phone looking it up except for those lousy stuffed animals.

I still love it after all these years.

Not for everyone, but there are bold spirits out there. Kevin is content with his life and way of reselling, but if he needed the money he could step on it.

Last year things got slow in the woodworking shop, I had been watching videos about selling on Ebay so I thought I would try it. At the moment I would say that the work is divided about 50/50 but the woodworking shop is going to be very busy soon and I will be struggling to keep up with both. Therefore, I consider myself to only be a part time reseller, it has been fun. Love watching your videos for the information and getting new BOLO ideals

Reselling is a hobby for me, so I guess that would be classified as "part-time"? I try to do something reselling-related every day, but some days it's just packing orders. Acquiring inventory and shipping it out are the fun parts, but the listing process in between is what I slack at. Fortunately, it doesn't matter (financially) whether my items sell or not. It was hard work in the corporate world to accomplish what has become known as FIRE, especially in one of the top-10 COL cities in the country. Not sure if it would be possible to make a full-time income reselling here. I wouldn't even want to try.

Have to limit my income due to social security but that goes away next year.

I didn’t stop working at a job until I was forced to by an injury. I had been dabbling in reselling. Then I qualified for first Disability and then Social Security, plus my husband had a very small pension for a few years at a union job. So we had an income before I started doing this relatively full time. My husband has passed away but I still have his pension and my Social Security. I have a set goal for yearly profits that will allow me to keep paying rent into the future when my life insurance proceeds end in a couple of years. I’m gradually getting there.
