Trapped glue is a problem, whether finger joints or dowels. Just the right amount is strongest and works best. Set the clamps at the center FIRST,, allow the squeeze out toward the ends

Pretty poor shop teacher. Most wood glue seeps deepr into the grain staining it than you would care to sandpaper off. In which case planing would be more effective and efficient. Better to just use a controlled amount of glue. Reduce waste, clean up, 'sanding' & time. But I caught your drift. The best part of your post, you took woodworking. Far more useful than 'liberal arts'.

Fun fact, the color of the tape defines how long the glue will remain pliable. You may have noticed that the "tan" tape, cheap and fast drying glue, is almost impossible to completely remove.
The blue tape is rated for 2 weeks and the green tape gives you an extra week or two, but in practice it works out to more like a month or so, that you can take to texture and paint your walls, before the tape starts to bond to the trim. Never use tape btw except for what he's doing.
The more expensive tape doesn't protect your clear fir from the scratchy bar clamps any better than the cheap stuff, but the butcher paper and glue waterfalls do add to the visual effect.
If you spritz a little water into those bone dry channels before you lather the glue on - well what am I thinking? Look at all those sponsorship posters!

Use a BRUSH to apply your glue! That's faster, more even, a whole lot less messy, and you won't waste so much by using twice the amount of glue that's actually needed. Also this type of glue (the white glue meant for wood work) can be cleaned off of your tools and your workpiece with a wet cloth; it can essentially be washed away cause is water dissolvable until it has dried. Only from that point on it is water resistant (but that you likely already knew).

This bit is for end grain to end grain glue ups. Using it in this fashion is nearly completely useless, if not actually weakening the joint. It might help the boards register a bit during clamping, but otherwise I'm pretty sure this would actually be weaker than if you had just glued the flat faces together.
Look at any factory-made butcher block and you'll see what I mean.
