    I HAD TWO labs that were trained to do river trips. With me on my canoe !
    So much fun they had great balance.

    Great video for sure! Our dog was a natural with a tent, but wish we had found this before hitting the river and rapids in a canoe. She did well, but as soon as we were in low laying waters, she always wanted to jump out of the canoe and walk then swim next to us. We still take her canoeing, but she cries along the way, but that could also be from the heat this Summer.

    Simple, but good advice to prepare in advance. I'd also throw in that people should have already done their basic obedience training, as I've seen many people with dogs, in or out of canoes, who can't even make it sit.

    great video! getting ready to take my pup on her first BWCA trip. Suggestions for life jackets that might have carry pouches on them? Id rather not deal with switching from lifejacket to her harness every single time we get on and off and have to carry the extra vest. Thanks!

      That sounds fun. I don't have a recommendation for such a life jacket,but it's probably out there if you search a bit.

    Great video! Thanks for visiting us in Guelph @holycowcanoe. We like to promote the rentals at Fairy Lake in Acton to get the dogs used to the environment before heading into Upper Canada. There is a dog park and, track too which helps train them. Excellent video. You should come to the Fairy Lake boathouse, I'll show you around.

    Hmm never thought of the weight the dog would have to hold with one of those packs, I can’t see that being good for there hips

      Very true, the weight should be reasonable and suitable for the dog. I carry all my dogs stuff for that very reason.

    Dog needs life jacket. You said it’s mandatory

    • @ShuteDogTraining
      @ShuteDogTraining  4 года назад +2

      Good catch, you were paying attention!. The footage you see of my dog with no life jacket is in a river which is literally 2 ft deep. He can actually stand in that part of the river. Once we hit deeper water, life jacket is on for sure.

      Dog life vets are actually dangerous, my friends dog died wearing one, he was fitted correctly for one, he fell of her kayak and flipped over the currents were strong and she could not get too him in time. She had a lab too, please don’t get a life vest there a waste, they put your dog in more danger

    Why does your dog need a life vest

      And the vest contributed to the dog's death...how?

      @@maggiewagmore8778 the vest flipped her dog over, her dog was 60 pounds, there was a current so she could not get to him in time, he fell off her kayak

      A 60 pound dog on a kayak is crazy! There's your first problem. How did the vest flip the dog when the flotation part is on the dogs back? Did the dog rotate in the pfd?

    • @IanSizzler
      @IanSizzler Год назад +1

      Nope. I refuse to listen to some third hand anecdotal story saying NO FLOTATION in rapids is somehow SAFER than a properly fitted life vest. You are out of line and spreading dangerous and false information.
