Just saw this video. Absolutely love where you said it's not the dogs issue it's your issue. You have to train the dog. Those 2 statements should be on every dog sale or adoption paperwork for every dog.
Thanks. I totally agree.
that was funny with oliver and his booties, raincoat and not looking impressed, lol, lots of good info re taking a dog canoeing thank you . poor angel and the black flies loved this
Thanks. Angel loves a canoe trip.
had so much fun watching this video 😂I think in another life I‘d want to be a Canadian peace & thnx for the great tips keep on rockin the free world
For me, Kevin is a hilarious mash-up of Mr. Dress-up and Joey Dunlop (for those of you know motorcycle racing).
That laugh is infectious.
This was an awesome video :) informative yet hilarious. Thank you for sharing Kevin, all your knowledge will come in handy training my dog.
Great information, hilarious and laid-back. 100/100 video.
Will be using your advice on a trip next week!
Great information and advice. Thanks for sharing this.
this is great I have been taking my dog(s) in the canoe for years but I learned a lot. I really like the mat command. Many thanks
This was really helpful. 20 mins flew by! Thank you 👍
Glad it helped. Hope you have a good dog trip.
This was great! Very helpful AND entertaining! Thanks!
I use Marigold Essence to keep the flies off of my dog and even myself. It is often sold at feed stores. It was created to use on horses to keep the flies off of them. Marigold flowers are great to plant in your gardens as a natural bug deterrent.
Good idea.
Great video Kevin, thanks, lots to think about. I’m looking at getting my first dog as for the first time in my life I’ll have time in my planned early retirement (I’m planning to escape the rat-race). The dog will join me on day and multi-day/multi-week trips in the outdoors (canoeing, walking, biking etc.). As we will clock up lots of miles on land and water, a working Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever or English Springer Spaniel has been suggested, but I’m not sure if a Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever would be a bit big for lifting out of the water after a self-rescue (post-capsize in open water). I may well be paddling solo with the dog. The dog would wear a dog PFD complete with lifting handle. Also repeatedly lifting over fences and gates etc. I guess you don’t have enclosures with styles on footpaths in Canada like we do in the UK which you have to climb over and lift the dog over. Your thoughts on dog size for lifting back into a canoe post-capsize as well as lifting over numerous gates/fences etc. on walking trips? Should I stick to a medium size dog like an English Springer Spaniel and avoid the larger retrievers?
Fantastic. thanks for this one
This is fantastic! Thank you!
A treat is a reward. Paying attention - belly rubs or pats and praise, is also a reward.
Tickle trunk -good tips Kevin 👍
Thanks for the tips, we will be canoeing with our Aussie this spring/summer for the first time :)
So much information here that I didn’t think of. The best idea being the mat and training the dog to go there. I’m going to try this with my German shepherd who is an “idiot” to put it politely (lol) in the canoe. I never would have though of this. He is a rescue dog and gets anxiety when the other members of our group are kayaking and canoeing and get ahead of us. He thinks he needs to be in the front lol.
Great video.
Great video! I never thought of placing my dog when in the boat. I have a raised bed at home where I place him when there are people over just so he's not bugging everyone. Even if it put a mat on his raised bed so he gets accustomed to it and it will become his safe place. Great tip!
I love it, wish I would have done more with my dog Tilley when she was younger.
Have you tried Tilley in a canoe recently? My wife and I recently took our 6 dogs in a canoe (ruclips.net/video/2Zz8EbxOhm8/видео.html) and 4 of the 6 are double digits. One is almost 15. The oldest one just likes to be with and explore on shore.
great info
Hello Kevin, I dont even have a dog but I found your video very pertinent and informative , wish I had one as my cats are not into going anywhere near water 😁, thank's for your video
Great informative video. Training is key. I’m still working on my yellow lab, she is too willing to jump out of the canoe, and too barky / social on portages. I should have trained her at a younger age. Thanks!
We are taking our rescue pup on his BWCA canoe trip next week. And we talked to our Vet today a doggie First Aid Kit. From what you talked about we are on the same track. Thanks for the video.
Have fun! I live up in Ely and love taking our dogs in.
Great video Kevin! I wish that I had started early with my GSD. He won't get near the canoe. Keep up the great work!
I started my collie shepherd mix at 9 weeks old in the bathtub in a medium Tupperware bin lol worked awesome to get him use to the feeling and how movements result in tips
Great video kevin. Really enjoyed it. I have a 8 month old black lab that trips with me. +1 on making sure your dog is trained. She is very good but too hyper for Algonquin yet. BTW, they are Bungee Dealee Bobs, made in Minn. I use them all the time.
My lab loves water more than he loves food, and boy does he love food.
Smokie the bear is real??? Where's his hat? Lol. RIP Mr.Dressup! Great show!
Kevin... Great Video... Yup you about covered it all. I take my Dog Mollie on almost every trip with me... Se gets to insulted when I don't bring her. I really do not feel it is much more work but I do like the Idea of making her carry her own food and treats... Until the next video... Dennis, Canoehound Adventures
Small world. I'm just watching your latest Nab. river trip video now. Cool.
Nice to see what you pack for your dog, I have very similar kit for my dog as well. One thing I add though is a length of rope to tether her in camp. I have a beagle mix who loves sniffing, and a particular good smell will lead her away from camp fairly quickly. Keeping her on a tether lets her wander around without getting lost - although she gets pretty tangled up in trees sometimes!
I bring a tie out as well. I go as long as I can through camp with the line between 2 trees like a clothesline (above my head so I don’t get clotheslined by it). Make it quite tight with a truckers hitch. Then I hook the dogs 6’ leash on with a carabiner. The dog can freely go back and forth. I think it’s important with any recall-challenged dog, like mine, to be restrained. This works best with thicker rope.
I saw a link on Paddling.com and watched your video on paddling with dogs. We're from Florida and moved back (grand-kids) to Florida's Nature Coast after a career in the Military. I've had similar experiences to you in both canoes and , since about 2003, with kayaks. We've paddled in a variety of areas from Upper Michigan, Upstate NY, Washington DC/Maryland, Southside Va, and all over Florida. Our dogs are always smaller than yours but big enough to take care of themselves...think 25 lb terriers more or less. Although we don't paddle with dogs in Fresh Water locally, we still take them in salt. They seem to enjoy the dolphins and manatees that we have in abundance here. One thing we learned early is to leash them in the canoe or kayak. Our pups always seem to want to be where they're not. If with me, they want to be with my wife and vice versa. I keep a 20 foot webbing leash clipped to their PFE and anchored to me...just in case. I didn't mean to get too wordy, but thanks again for the video. mike in Crystal River
Great video. I'm on my 3rd canoe dog also and he is never sure about it in the beginning..."it's a trick" I hear him think. But after 10 minutes he's back in the saddle. Don'tcha just luv 'em?
I do not have a dog, but I thought this video gave everyone excellent advice.
Great video - very considerate for dogs, which I applaud, however, with regards to dogs drinking water from lakes and rivers and puddles etc, you can train a dog not to drink that water, and they shouldn't as they are susceptible to the same water-bourne bacteria we are, which can result in them getting unwell
Very funny thanks ATB
ty
This was great as I have had my 1 yr old lab out a few times now. Only problem I have is she loves the water so much that I can't keep her in the boat...
I've got the same kind of dog!
Great video , but tips on getting them into the canoe ? .. I want to start taking my 7yearold but he can’t jump , launch from a wavey Lake Huron shore almost all the time
still makin it through vids.. 👋😎👍
Thanks Kevin: I'm trying to find a dog to train & take with me on my canoe trips as well me a friend & companion. I've decided that a Springer Spanial or a standard poodle might be the best but am trying to find out more. Thanks for the timely video. I had a great 2 week solo on the Haliberton Highlands Waterways & would love to share it with a dog. Thanks Brian 79
I hope you considered adopting a shelter dog. We've had good experiences with shelters run by county and other government agencies. We've had bad experiences with shelters run by individuals. They often take dogs with health problems from other shelters and charge you to adopt dogs with less obvious, but expensive, problems. Be careful. The internet is a valuable tool. We've always liked terriers in the 25 lb range (grown). Puppies are best to acclimate to canoeing and kayaks. If you spend a bit of time, everyday, if possible, for 10-15 minutes, you can train a pup to any level you desire. Good luck.
Hi Mike:
I did get a rescue pup through Kajiji . He's a shepherd, Lab mix & the love of our home. His name is Diamond & now weighs about 80 lbs He loves the water & every person he meets is , in his eyes, a new friend. Thanks for your suggestion. Brian 79
Great setting, where is this?
Yes, need some sort of sleeping bag for dog in cold weather. Was lucky a few times having an extra bag on campouts. Saline solution for their eyes.
We bought a cheap synthetic sleeping bag, cut it in half, and resewed the pieces. We had one with a working zipper and draw cord. The other had a stationary zipper and added draw cord. Works really well.
I dont disagree with having your dog on leash but that takes away flight and leaves fight if another dog off leash goes after your on leash dog. So saying u had your dog on leash doesn't help once it's been attacked and potentially hurt. Any ideas on a quick release snap to let them run away from a hazard?
Mat good... fly smacker reeeal goood... SantaDog say MORE TREATS, then come back down Zumbro again!
Why I feel like this is one of DrMike's video?
I heard about someones dog dying from drinking river water even when it had all its shots
Dogs can tire from swimming, just like people. If you're in the middle of a big lake and dump, the dog can tire before getting to shore or doing a canoe rescue.
Have taken my dog Lola, camping. It behaves like its been kidnapped and about to be sold into slavery. This summer she will come canoeing (UK canala and lakes). You have given me some good info and advice which I appreciate. Lola will not.
🐕🦺👍👍👍
Angel is such a babe
Greetings from Nebraska! Thanks very much for this content! I'm training my 2 year old rescued black lab for a canoe trip, and you've covered a lot I hadn't considered. We've had to take a break from training at the lake due to the presence of blue-green algae found in several nearby areas, which can be fatal to dogs. Looking forward to getting back out there with her once the weather cools off. Blue-green Algae blooms in areas with heavy agriculture combined with warm temperatures. I wonder if this is less of a problem for you in Canada. Here's my girl: ruclips.net/video/uH5VxkOgUNk/видео.html
The algae problem is getting worse here as well. At least the parks here in Ontario tell you where the problem lakes are so you avoid them with your dog. Nice pic.
Why does your dog need a life vest
Can't watch the episodes with Joe robinets new dog. It's not a woods dog imo.
