She won't get to drive all the cars. But that one she will 😁 I've got some other stuff in the works that she might actually learn to drive a stick with. I can't wait for her to yet her license.
I will. And thank you 🍻 She had a moment in the middle of it where she got frustrated because she really does know how to work a ratchet. Muscle memory takes time to return, and it's been a lot of years since she did this regularly. She's so proud of what she's done every time we do it though, and that's worth everything.
She says, "let him know I day thank you and that we can be friends. Everyone always says how cool it is that me and my dad work together, he actually said i was good" She's pretty proud of what she can do, so it means a lot to her.
Thank you 🍻 I am a lucky man. Back when I had my shop she would spend every waking minute there if she was allowed. She was running the lathe when she was 6. Being able to not only teach her more in depth, but also to actually have her do the majority of the work is amazing, and I treasure these days.
I'm happy to see your doing better, and absolutely love seeing Dad & daughter busting knuckles together. Well done you two! Looks like it is machined for a bush, take a measurement with ya👍👏👏👏😎
I'm working on it fast. I've been dragging my feet with family stuff. But believe me, I'm in overdrive right now. I need to weld the intake on the motor to keep it straight. And the second i have access to a machine big enough, it climbs to the top of the list so I can hear it fire. This month I'm shooting in the direction of headers because not much makes an open hood hot rod look as cool as an insane set of headers.
The short answer is neither. The long answer, is that when I was much younger, there was a truck that made the cover of where magazine. Called the Tubester. It was built by a gentleman named Mike Cooper (I had to look other up) The fenders dump headers on it where 4 into 6 into 4, and eventually into 1. A v8 chevy with 6 tubes, swirling in a twisted ball of tubing. It was what sparked my love of exhaust , building headers and exhaust systems, the basis of my love of mechanical systems as art. For both of my 39s I want to build intricate headers, not 6 tube, bit 4 swirling tubes, potentially with full loops, to amplify the size, and make them stand out. Form definitely ahead of function on these. They'll combine to a single 4" or so tube, with some form of cable operated valve, to either allow it to dump just in front of the doors, or to go back within the frame, all the way to the rear bumper through full mufflers. I'm currently looking for 2 or 3 sets of v8 headers to compile enough tube to fulfill my vision A long answer, but if you're interested in that kind of thing, look up the build, if it had been released today, it would still be ahead of its time and turn heads.
Love the daddy daughter building thing. Just measure the hole and the tip of the input shaft that will tell you real quick. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see this up and running
Thank you 🍻 I've got a new digital caliper on the way, I never remember I'm missing tools until I actually need them. The consensus seems to be yes, but I'll double check when if comes in so that I can order parts.
It probably wouldn't be worth the extra work, but could you shorten the shifter mounting bracket to move it forward and then shorten the shift rods to get a little more leg room and clearance for the doghouse? I love seeing every little thing come together.
I thought about that when I was building it, but it's counterproductive since the Seat is so far back. I'm staring at it and honestly wonder if I'll need a longer shifter already to be In a comfortable spot, I'd rather not lengthen the throw even further moving it forward. It's the width that will be the biggest killer for me, I've got size 14 feet, so I needed every bit of room, that doghouse is going to near scrape to give me as much as possible
In working on more like this, I prefer these two because I can pack a lot into a video. Honestly I'm trying to get more of short videos too, for those like my nephews with shorter attention spans, just more videos in general. I'll be back out today, and I'll be uploading Hanks videos in the next couple days 😎
A few videos ago I laid them out, I've designed a race style pedal box with throttle, brake and clutch, 3 hydraulic masters, all in a contained box. It will just bolt to the floor with 4 bolts, I hook up 3 hydraulic lines and a throttle linkage and it's done. Super simple, and clean.
I have most definitely watched grown men struggle more with them than she did, for someone that has never done it before a tranny swap is a mental and physical workout and I am exceedingly proud of her.
Yeah I'm a big fan of a bushing over a bearing personally. My gut was leaning to machined, I'm going to see if I can find bushing specs and verify. Thank you 🍻
I had daughters as well and they were my best helpers. Boys seem to like it for a short while then it wains away. I am looking at a three speed transmission that kinda reminds me of some of the vette transmission tailshafts. I see several mounting points anyway and not having but one older vette with a four speed, really have little to go one right now... I'm seventy three so been a good minute since I played under the hood of anything. Crank is milled already so just get some brass and turn your own bushing for the flywheel. Make it a "hair lose" as its not a spinning thing as its a release but keep the bearings in the transmission from stress. I used to call off the name of any piece or part and now can't remember my kids names so easy.. and now of seventeen years since I had a accident thats left me a cripple. My prayer was for the big three to make a top shift transmission instead of a floor shifter that can catch two gears and blow into pieces. Well that and that GM would of stuffed the distributor in front instead of the back. I can say though with a bit of pride that I made a floor shifter that mounted to the top of the transmission like a truck for example and with tungsten shift rods... lets just say nothing bent or gave a fraction. Plus it never ever missed a shift because of linkage issues. I was heavy equipment fab work for a good many years in alaska. Southeast alaska back in my times was a wild west last of the hot rod cowboy days. Guys our age never said so but there was a bit of a boy in almost all of us wanting to ride a horse and pack a six gun. I trained for the army olympics while I was in Nam and no I didn't win... I finished off at like fourteenth in my area of weight lifting and left myself looking like a freak. Cost me some time in the big house which included the old Deer lodge plus a visit in mississippi... greenville to get a location. I had some prejudice issues to work out. Stories I don't believe myself but those memories are right painful. Old school hot rodding was so much fun and lost forever as I see it.
Right hand drive more leg room or shift motor just an idea great build sir. I really loved watching you and daughter work together, I miss working with mine. Thank you guys 👍🏼👍🏼
Not going to lie to you. The motor is centered because aesthetically, it has to be. No other reason. Kicking it 3 inches would help my leg room, but my passenger would have given up leg and more importantly butt room. That's going to become it's own issue once the floors are in. Haha well I'm happy to help turns out we both need help so 😅 pretty cool to see it come together looks like u cud move the shifter back and over an gain 2 or 3 inches if mounted it on the tail shaft
I'm going to look at that harder once the seat is mounted. No matter what it's going to ve a very race car styled driving position, everything super close to each other and easy to use.
I have a Saginaw three speed with the Borg Warner overdrive. One of these days I’ll find a car to put it in. Saginaw 3 speeds are desirable because unlike the older Muncies, all three gears are synchronised in the Saginaw. 1st gear isn’t synchronised in the muncie. I just found your channel and enjoying this build.
Sorting the shifter levers and brackets will give you lots more space you will have to extend the shifter but I think it would be a ton more comfortable and look wise just trying to help thanks for the content
It's crossed my mind for sure. But one thing at a time, the more I think about it, the more I think the seat needs to happen first, or something that holds me in the right position at least, once i can sit where I'm supposed to I can figure out where everything else has to be. I'm cutting a crossmember first so that we don't need blocks or anything anymore, I'm doing my b3st not to do work too many times, so shifter changes might come last.
The 260’s were supposed to come machined for sticks as thy were a limited use engine. The crank was unique for the 260 but only in the journals T50 5 speeds came behind them if a stick with an odd shift pattern. Had one and kept the entire stick setup for my 350 olds. Move the shifter to the tail stock of the transmission and throw that bracket away and lengthen your shift rods. Your crank is good to go you just need a pilot bearing to go in it. If it wasn't drilled the bell housing would not of bolted up.
If I could post a picture I'd show you the bare transmission, we're already cruising on the doghouse with it removed. I'll put it on the tail, and I'm building him linkages, much cleaner and a tighter feel. Thank you for reaffirming what I'm doing though, just assures me I'm on the right track.
You could really mess with people and reverse the shift pattern. I did that to an old truck I had back in my early twintys. Didn't have to worry about people asking to barrow my truck.
🤣🤣 I have a motorcycle like that. I'm planning to let my daughter drive it though, I want to make this one easy to drive....I don't have many friends to ask me anyways
It looks like you nailed it with fox craft, which if I understand correctly was an aftermarket unit in the 60s? Somehow that just makes it that much cooler to me, knowing that it's a vintage piece going in. Thank you 🍻
Just off the coast of Vancouver, on Vancouver island. We live in a tiny village on the west coast of the island, at the end of a dead end gravel road 😎
I actually address this is in the video. It looks like I'm good and it's machined, but someone also informed me in the comments that all 260 are machined. 🍻
I'm not understanding why? I understood what you said, but I asked if it's the clutch fork that is stopping it? Because if the clutch fork stops it, why would there be starter bumps on both sides?
Clutch fork is on drivers side, the opening in the bell housing for the starter is on the passenger side. There may not be any holes in the bottom of the engine block for the starter bolts.
I figured as much, but I have no clue who's. Doesn't bother me really since it seems to shift tight. 🍻 I just missed out on the muscle car Era as a kid. By the time I was driving we all had autos, or integrated shifters.
Just as I would call myself an artist with my cars, metal, and even paints and canvases (fine art) my daughter is an artist with her makeup. She is super passionate about her makeup and experimenting with it, and we have spoken at length of her use, and why it is important to her and I support her artistic expression🍻
Why not try to find a 5 speed transmission from a Chevy S10. That would get the shifter out of the way. The transmission you have is from a mid 60s Chevy/GMC truck. The bolt spacing on the transmission mount are all the same on GM transmissions.
I looked honestly. 5 speeds are going for 500-1000 locally. The 5 speed in an s10 has an integrated bell and would require an adapter, they are a non removeable bellhousing. Even with the price, they still rarely pop up, and for the sake of the style of build, I do prefer the older trans. A very good friend of mine showed up with 4 transmissions, 2 saginaws, an 833 Mopar (4speed overdrive) and an unknown 3 speed. Along with 2 shifters, and a bellhousing. The parts fell in my lap much in the style of the build. I truly do like this transmission for this build. A 3 speed saginaw behind an olds motor with detroit blowers feels nostalgiac. And a 3 speed car just feels fun. I think it was 100% the right trans for this car. Until I eventually swap in a 403, at which point I'll probably look for a 5 or 6 speed.
Newer? The 90s 4.3 trucks I've never seen a separate bell. It's too late for this car , I'm quite happy with the choice, buy I'm always looking towards the future. 🍻 And I wish transmissions where that cheap here. I've been watching people list plain chevy bellhousings alone for $500
@@kingofbootyfab I got mine out of a 85 S10 the prices around here are getting higher too. I took my 5 speed transmission out of a junkyard S10. One from a mid 80's Camaro or firebird. But the shifter sits back farther, and the transmission is turned 16 degrees to the right.
Your transmission has a provision for a floor shifter cast into the tail housing. You could make an adapter that bolts to your tail housing that you can bolt your existing shifter to it. You would have to lengthen your linkage. You'll have no problem doing that, and that would gain so much needed leg room.
Yes it is. I've got a few differant ideas for it, but I haven't gotten that far yet. I've seen it done without a center strip, and obviously with , I'm hoping the decision comes to me suddenly while I'm working one day.
Absolutely. I'm 100% doing that on my other car. But I kind of like the idea of a simple center rib on this one, just feels super mechanical and might fit the feel. That's why I'm waiting though.
I love that ratchet for most things, but she needs to find what works for her. Most of my tools are in my big roll around in my office, and it was the only one handy at the moment though

looking at your shift mount on the tranny, it looks to me like you should be able to move your shifter over on you tranny maybe an inch or a bit more. might have to pull it back a bit for shift link clearance? i had the same leg room problems on a t-bucket i built some years back that i put an M21 4 speed in. i just moved everything over as much as i could and i got the clearance i needed. maybe i'm wrong, i'm just looking at it on the screen and can't really see everything. by the way, me and my kid work together in the shop on her harleys when we get the time and she says that your girl is going to be the most popular girl in school if she keeps working on hotrods with you and learns how to do everything involved with it. and many young men will be intimidated by her because she'll know way more about cars than they do.
I'm going to pass that along to her. Thank you 🍻 She's helped me build a couple choppers. And helps me work on the Harley. She turns 16 in less than 2 months and has asked if instead of a car, if her first vehicle can be a motorcycle and she would like to build it ground up. She intimidates them already.
It's been machined for a pilot bearing
Excellent, thank you.
Your crank is already drilled? Wow
Seems that way. I'll take it as a win, must have been meant to be 😎
It's probably a Indy shifter or a fox craft
It looks like you nailed it with fox craft, which if I understand correctly was an aftermarket unit in the 60s?
Somehow that just makes it that much cooler to me, knowing that it's a vintage piece going in. Thank you 🍻
Nice!
What part of Canada you guys in? I’ve only been to Vancouver… years ago
Just off the coast of Vancouver, on Vancouver island. We live in a tiny village on the west coast of the island, at the end of a dead end gravel road 😎
@@kingofbootyfab made it to the end of the world I see haha. Winner! I’m in central Washington state.
As far as we could go. Property is cheap, the kids can still play in the streets, it's caught in a time warp from when things where peaceful. 😎
@@kingofbootyfab awesome man!
A click bait image🤩! Good to see the project proceeding.
My daughter is very proud of what she did for her age, and asked to use that picture. After all of her hard work, the least I could do was agree. 🍻
@@kingofbootyfab And so she should be, and a credit to you too. It's a nice picture too!
Be careful working on olds.some of the cranks don't have a hole for a pilet Bering.
I actually address this is in the video. It looks like I'm good and it's machined, but someone also informed me in the comments that all 260 are machined. 🍻
Starter will be on opposite side now. There may not be any mounting holes.
To clear the clutch fork?
I'd never heard that before, but I'll do some digging.
There might not be any mounting holes for the starter. The starter has to mount on the passenger side now if you look at the bell housing.
I am sorrry I didn't know it had openings on both sides.Sorry for the confusion.
its a unversal shifter after market
I figured as much, but I have no clue who's. Doesn't bother me really since it seems to shift tight. 🍻
I just missed out on the muscle car Era as a kid. By the time I was driving we all had autos, or integrated shifters.
Nice to see a young lady willing to learn and do it herself. Please lose the eye make up though. You don't need it.
@@kingofbootyfab . The S10 with a V6 has the divorced bellhousing I'm running one behind my hemi. I got mine for $100.
Newer? The 90s 4.3 trucks I've never seen a separate bell.
It's too late for this car , I'm quite happy with the choice, buy I'm always looking towards the future. 🍻
And I wish transmissions where that cheap here. I've been watching people list plain chevy bellhousings alone for $500
@@kingofbootyfab
I got mine out of a 85 S10 the prices around here are getting higher too.
Hey Ryan, is this going to have a split windshield?
Yes it is. I've got a few differant ideas for it, but I haven't gotten that far yet. I've seen it done without a center strip, and obviously with , I'm hoping the decision comes to me suddenly while I'm working one day.
@@kingofbootyfab a mitre joint and clear sealer would be cool
Absolutely. I'm 100% doing that on my other car. But I kind of like the idea of a simple center rib on this one, just feels super mechanical and might fit the feel. That's why I'm waiting though.
@@kingofbootyfab Yeah, I agree that you want to choose the style that fits the project esthetically.

I think I'm a very lucky man to have the times that I do.
looking at your shift mount on the tranny, it looks to me like you should be able to move your shifter over on you tranny maybe an inch or a bit more. might have to pull it back a bit for shift link clearance? i had the same leg room problems on a t-bucket i built some years back that i put an M21 4 speed in. i just moved everything over as much as i could and i got the clearance i needed. maybe i'm wrong, i'm just looking at it on the screen and can't really see everything. by the way, me and my kid work together in the shop on her harleys when we get the time and she says that your girl is going to be the most popular girl in school if she keeps working on hotrods with you and learns how to do everything involved with it. and many young men will be intimidated by her because she'll know way more about cars than they do.
I'm going to pass that along to her. Thank you 🍻
She's helped me build a couple choppers. And helps me work on the Harley. She turns 16 in less than 2 months and has asked if instead of a car, if her first vehicle can be a motorcycle and she would like to build it ground up. She intimidates them already. And knows she can still pull the do you know who my dad is card if she needs to.
Her career won't go down this road. And I support that. But i believe she will be turning wrenches forever 😎
