You don't. If you press the power button + Function button on top during startup it will boot into Android. It says so right on Anbernic's product page for this device.

This is an area of interest for me, nostalgically, but I also want to intro my children to retro games, so they can appreciate what came before. And the older games are more kids friendly, I find.
You can get perfectly good n64 performance using linux as well. You might have to tinker with emulator settings or replace the default firmware (Batocera) with custom firmware (arkos or Jelos). The default setup on these things is always a bit hit and miss.
Please tell me this runs Super Mario 64 Smoothly on the N64. I hear the android side is better for N64 emulation aswell. Would love to hear your time with it!
Is yours a special super model edition because mine can play up to ps1 and there is no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi except if you use an adapter And it is super heavy which I like quite much 😂
Does is it have Bluetooth controller support? Because I can use HDMi for a big screen experience. If I can use two Bluetooth controllers this can be a game changer.

Is there a way to get all of the Pokemon games on this system? I bought this system really hoping that it would have most of the original pokemon games on it but am really disappointed to see that it does not have them pre installed with the chip I purchased with it. was just wondering if there was a way I could get them on there.

Have you tried holding the Function button and pressing the on/off button? From what I understand that's how you switch to Android, so it's probably how you switch back to Linux
It is better from a technical perspective, it can run more, so it's probably more value for your money. I bought this one for the form factor, though. I like how compact it is so I can carry it around in my pocket (I don't see that happening with the Retroid Pocket, ironically). And this one has a premium looking steel case rather than plastic, but it's more about what you're looking for

Were the N64 games choppy cos of slow access speeds from SD card (so a better performance SD card would be fine) or another reason?
No idea why they were choppy. But the same games run fine, when playing them through the Android OS.

You use should use Custom firmware, I use jelOS because the emulators are more up to date and optimised, not had any problems with N64

The default is without games, just a card for the system. But you can buy a card with games along with it, it should say on the store page

The device comes with 2 sd cards, with one SD card preloaded with games. I have no clue what these other folks are talking about 🤔
