I'm suprised that it could run DS games so well, like 3 years ago those are unheard of for this kind of system and price, even Anbernics in the 100 dollar range used to suffer through DS games yet here it is, running great, it just sucks that you can't do, dual screen properly without it looking wonky as hell, but still for 40 usd it's amazing
No one seemed to like the placement of the controls on the R35S so this is a much better design. I just got my Miyoo Mini+ or I would be getting one of these. I wanted an R35S but the price jumped significantly by the time I made a decision. Now I know why. I honestly didn't think that there were IP laws in China or they were so loose they didn’t matter.
I usually ignore the off-brand stuff, mostly cuz I wouldn't have to do nearly as much work to perfect the name brands. After seeing a few of these in the wild--and watching this video--I might give it a try.
Aaaah, mine is arriving this week! I got it for $60 Canadian as an early special. I am so glad they made a better R35S because I hate the analog placement of the RGB20S which it originally cloned. I really love playing DreamCast and DS games on my R35S and can't wait for a better experience with the R36S!
Oh, I didn't realize the R36S would be taller. I realize it has a different back for the shoulder buttons, but I didn't realize it was around as tall as the RG353V/RG353VS.
Cool little bit having your kid play the Cars game :) As a father myself, definitely going to be grabbing one tomorrow for me and my older two to mess around with!
I was able to order in a purple one with random AliExpress coupons for $43 Canadian! It was an easy buy, especially with the analog sticks now on the bottom.
Just ordered one! Looking forward to getting back into retro handheld gaming. I have emudeck on my steamdeck but you cant beat the form factor of this device.
Thats terrific. The games look 100x better than the old days, Because the tvs where 480p. And the games didnt always run as smooth. Really like all the settings and management on this one. Seems like its dedicated to games we enjoyed.
I'd love to see more Neo Geo Pocket/Pocket Color tests, as well as Wonder Swan, and that kinda stuff. Just to see how lesser-known systems work on a certain chip.
NGPC and WSC are definitely underrated, some cfw for certain handhelds don't even include them... But I don't think any chips would have trouble running them tbf
Firstly: The R35S has an official ArkOS support now?! Thats huge news. Secondly, if the controls are that easy to fix to make it better then the R35S it might just be worth it to me. Honestly my R35S has been sitting there because I hate the controls so much. May not be worth sleeping on the couch though if I buy yet another handheld. lol.
For button feeling/stiffness, you can do the modifications that I show at the end of this video. That will make the R35S feel better, but it won't change ergonomics.
They changed the pcb significantly in the meantime. I received my white R36S today and directly was annoyed by the extremely stiff D-Pad. I opened the device and noticed that there are a few changes. The Joysticks are not held in place by screws on the pc but by screws on the plastic front cover. The D-pad can't be adjusted by a screw as it is locked by being placed the front cover and the pcb. I was really disappointed to be stuck with this configuration, however the price of 60 € (germany) is so low that I don't regret buying it.
I really appreciated your dive into how to fix the controls, which I see get dragged a lot on this device. That said I have a Retro Achievements account (I'm one of _those)_ so the lack of wifi is a potential issue, but that's really more of an issue with how Retro Achievements works.
I wonder if the buttons, d-pad, and the conductive rubber pads from the rg353v are at all similar to the R36s. In Retro Game Corps' most recent video he showed how easy it is to get replacement parts from Anbernic.
Later units lack a vibration motor despite what it is still advertised. I would encourage anyone missing it to open a dispute case for a fix or refund. Black Friday buyers still in time!
For once an intellectual property dispute that actually benefits consumers! Its newly modified shape looks a lot more ergonomic than the prior model. While this R36S is $50 for me here in the US using Taki's link, I also have to pay an additional $10 for shipping. If this device is worth $50 then it's probably worth $60 too; but, the XU10 that Taki tested the other day, the one with the amazing controls, is $60 with free shipping from Ali. For even money which one of these is the better choice?
I ordered one of these after watching the review for the older version and I have to say it was money well spent. I would recommend to anyone who buys this, after you do the recommended hardware modifications to also go though the games and delete anything you're not going to play just to help clean up the clutter in the menus. There are a lot of duplicate games that are either in multiple languages or on several systems (Such as the Super Famicom and the Super Nintendo having duplicate games)

About import fees: It costs around R$260.00 ($53.00) + taxes and is around R$301.00 ($61.15) without coupons. Applying the discount coupons costs less than 50 dollars and we only pay the ICMS (Brazilian Tax). Anyway, great video :)
The shady part isnt that they filed an intellectual property violation. Its that their original product is already based on violating the intellectual property of nintendo, sega, sony, and etc.
