The D35 is in my opinion the finest guitar Martin has ever produced, which makes it the finest acoustic ever produced. It retains the sparkling trademark Martin mids and highs but delivers the low-mids like no other acoustic ever!!! Simply an amazing instrument that cannot be improved upon. The balance of tone is just sheer perfection. Anyone fortunate enough to obtain one of these treasures will NEVER experience regret from this acquisition.
I own one too. I put martin monel strings on mine. It gives it a more damp sound compared to the bright lively sound of the strings in the review. I'm not sure I prefer it. It is fore different. They both sound beautiful but different.
I have an early 80s d35 since 2000 and all my binding has come off front and back. We still make beautiful music together. She has taught me so much in the last 20 years. She is full of songs.
Tony, I just want to thank you. I watched and listened to many of you videos which gave me a lot of insight into which guitar to buy. I purchased the d35 about three weeks ago and could not be happier. It plays excellent, looks excellent and sounds great.
d28s are really nice guitars but d35s are so full sounding with such warmth I have played so many guitars even higher priced Martins and my D 35 is just so nice it just blows every guitar I have compared it to away. I have had it for 10 years and it just keeps getting better. I just cant say enough good things I just love my guitar! Peace!
I haven’t even finished watching the full video yet and I’m here to say the picking that starts in the middle is so killer I’m stealing it all …. once I’m able to learn it 😂😂😂 thanks. Sounds so great!!!!
I'm primarily an electric guitar player, with a beautiful collection all of which I play hard. Back when I started, my parents got me a nylon string acoustic, on which I immediately wanted to learn the recent hit "Stairway To Heaven". He relented, but made sure I was concurrently learning the fundamentals, and boy am I glad he did! I eventually converted that guitar to steel strings and later traded it for a 12 string. Anyway, many years and guitars later, I wanted to pass GO, and move directly to the best, which I felt was/is a Martin. I researched all of them, but ended up wanting a traditional Martin. I immediately veered off that path and ordered an HD28! Lol. Anyway, I loved it, but it had bottom-end boom that didn't work well with my heavy hand. Lighter picks helped, but I kept thinking about all the reviews and comparisons between it and the D-35. So I ordered a floor model D-35 and swapped them out - and got some credit to boot! Yes! The D-35 is the Martin for me! It did, however, need a proper setup, and I wanted the K&K mini system, so I had my tech install the K&K, give it a perfect setup, and highly polish the frets. Man oh man!!! What a guitar!!! It's forward projection and balanced tone is a great choice for me. There are qualities that I miss from my HD 28 (like that bass response and crisp top-end) and if I were wealthier, I would own both of them, but I'm not. The thing is, is that I amplify my D35 90% of the time, so I can eq it to get to where I want to be. And, heck, we're talking about USA Martin guitars here, so they are fundamentally fantastic from the start!! I'm honored and blessed to be able to own my Martin and I respect and admire it greatly.
I have a fantastic guitar called a Tanglewood TW47 and its superb, but wanted more for some reason, bought a Gibson Hummingbird, went off it, bought a Taylor 818e went off it, still loved the Tanglewood, now got a D35, and its amazing. The neck is low profile and amazing to play, it sounds fantastic, and the only Guitar in my opinion that's better than the Tanglewood which only cost £699. D35's are almost the perfect guitar for me, fantastic.
Haha! I have a tanglewood for 12 years already too! And it is a really great guitar. Never had any problem with it and super happy with it's sound. I don't like countless acoustics 3 or four times the price. I have to admit that this Martin really sounds good though-maybe the first one that sounds to me better than mine. Nonetheless I bought mine for 350 so I guess that the added value would be heard at some point...
I'm glad you mentioned the thinner bracing of the top on this Martin model in comparison with the D28. I sold my D28 in favor of a D35: Just more responsive as you are saying and just a thad more lively. Some will say the older ones are better but I can't under scribe that. A pupil of mine who in fact din't really know what he was buying came onto his guitar lesson and showed me his incredible sounding guitar. A recent D35. Mine's a 1978 example which is as good as well but just a bit different. And I loved the less V-shaped neck on my guitar although I know that remains personal. A good review that does justice to all elements of this wonderful guitar.

I'm going crazy listening to Martin guitar reviews on RUclips. The bracing weight and position on the D-18, D-25, and D-35 are different. The D-18 bracing is scalloped 5/16" and D-35 is unscalloped 1/4". Probably similar cross-section. D-18 is forward a bit, so frequency response will be different, but I would assert that you can never hear these differences on RUclips. The Neumann 184 mike here has pretty flat response from 9hz to 20khz so it's probably being fair, but where does the sound go from there? Very few people would know how to set up a reference audio path (flat frequency response throughout) but even if you did that, the audio is being going though ADC, then RUclips is compressing it, then through a DAC on some f-ing video card, then out an amplifier into who knows what loudspeakers. It's hopeless. You're simply not hearing the guitar for real. Any difference you might think you hear is less than the difference you might hear between two identical guitars, or two guitars one with D'Addarios and one with Elixirs or whatever. A week of playing later those STRINGS will sound different by more than any difference you could hear here. I did a stint last week (hey, we got time) of listening to RUclips demos of Martin 00-18s and 000-18s. I swear to God every video sounded different, and I am running the audio into a real audio processor and then into Sennheiser reference headphones. Half the time, I could be listening to almost any dreadnought out there. In this case, that Neumann, a powered small tube condenser, has such marvelous crisp highs, that it is known for recording drummers. So that "crisp" sound coming off all of the strings sounds better than the guitar would ever sound in real life. We are just going to have to venture out (when we are allowed to again) and actually play the things until one guitar says "take me home". And it will. (P.S. give the D-18 a chance and save a grand.)
Yeah, just about everything sounds "good", even on my tab speakers, so you know its mostly the processing of the signal. Gotta play them for real. Even then, a new guitar will take months or even years to "play in".
Anyone experience the sinking of the soundhole with the D35. I have a slight sinking toward the fretboard from the bridge when I look down from playing position. Any explanation and suggestions to remedy appreciated. Cheers!
@@bradh6185 I know there for a while he did..(play a Gibson I mean) but he played a D-35 for a long time. He actually has a signature Martin D-35.. if you've never seen one, the guitar is all black..for "The Man in Black" lol.. my good friend has one and it sounds absolutely amazing!! But also cost a little more than $4,000
The triangular bracing makes the guitar stronger which is why they could use slightly thinner bracing on the top. This makes the d35s a bit louder with more bass and responsiveness than the standard d28s, for example. I also heard that you want the top to move (vibrate) as much as possible but you want the back to be stiffer so that the sound resonates back to the top and project forward. So to answer your question, yes it affects the sound, in a good way.
I purchased a D35 left hand 6 months ago. I sent it back to Martin because the the back of the guitar started bulging out and cracking and the bracing inside came loose. $3200.00 and I wont see that guitar for 6 months. So im told. I am pissed!
+Marcus Segura - Listening to this on Klipsch speakers and looking closely at this vid on an HD 50", as well as having picked this guitar up at the local shop, they sound and look like the strings that come standard with the D-35, Martin MSP7200 Lifespans.

take it to a martin certified repair person it sounds like it has not been stored properly
What is that song he's playing from 3:05 - 3:25?
big sandy river
D-35 is what Johnny Cash played.
I thought he played Gibson.
But also cost a little more than $4,000
I think Neil Diamond’s guitar was also a D-35
would like a comparision b, martind d35 and guild d55
there is none d35 blows any guild away
That second song you play, whats the nam of it?
Allen Morales I
Does the bracing on the back due to the three piece back affect the tone?
The triangular bracing makes the guitar stronger which is why they could use slightly thinner bracing on the top. This makes the d35s a bit louder with more bass and responsiveness than the standard d28s, for example.
I also heard that you want the top to move (vibrate) as much as possible but you want the back to be stiffer so that the sound resonates back to the top and project forward.
So to answer your question, yes it affects the sound, in a good way.
Wow u play great. I have this guitar but don't do it justice like u :(
I purchased a D35 left hand 6 months ago. I sent it back to Martin because the the back of the guitar started bulging out and cracking and the bracing inside came loose. $3200.00 and I wont see that guitar for 6 months. So im told. I am pissed!
I purchased this D35 NEW!
The raw song, no eq. Merci
I have that guitar, i wish i could play it.
Magical

Listening to this on Klipsch speakers and looking closely at this vid on an HD 50", as well as having picked this guitar up at the local shop, they sound and look like the strings that come standard with the D-35, Martin MSP7200 Lifespans.
