      Thanks friend! I've been thinking about that, actually. At the very least, I'll probably need to start separating my "Master Sustained Damage" builds since that makes up the bulk of the episodes so far, and it's a little tougher to compare 10-12 builds on a graph than 5-6. I'm running out of colors! :)

    I stumbled across Bladesinger when I rolled up a Wood Elf Wizard that used a Shortsword instead of Staff. My DM suggested Bladesinger and I really enjoy it. I’m Level 4 right now and using Shadowblade/Short Sword. Thanks for the guide; it reinforces the choices I’ve already made and shapes what to take at higher levels. I enjoyed your conversational style and have Subscribed.

      Thanks! Still my favorite :). The only thing that makes me a little sad about the sub class is that, as you get higher level, it starts to feel a little less unique and a little more like other Wizards - the reality is, those high level spells are so strong, it's hard to justify not using them and just sticking with your Shadowblade/melee focus. Of course, using Animate Objects as a bonus action and still being in the mix hitting stuff with a rapier with a super high AC is still fun and devastating, and being able to take better advantage of things like Tenser's Transformation than other Wizards is also pretty cool :).

    Most Wizards become fun at level 5, Bladesingers are fun from level 2. if your campaign is likely to end at around level 12 play a bladesinger if it's going to 20 play any other subclass except necromancer obviously. That said, 17 levels of Bladesinger and 3 levels of Rogue is one of my favourite builds.

    Loving your channel! 3 levels of Assassin or Arcane trickster works well with Bladesinger, and flaming sphere combos nicely with booming blade; damage if they move, damage if they don't. I know it treads on the toes of shadow blade but it works.

    • @DnDDeepDive

      Yeah, there really are some great multi-class options for my beloved Bladesinger - Fighter is an easy one, giving action surge and duelist feat for an easy two levels, or darkness/devil's sight warlock for permanent advantage ... every time I consider multi-classing though I always just look at those higher level spells and... just can't make myself do it :).

    Spells like Protection from Evil/Good and Warding Wind are great defensive options to make you even harder to hit, but they eat up your concentration. Elemental Bane is a good higher end pickup if you have an elemental weapon, and Greater Invisibility gives you advantage on all your attacks on anything without True Seeing.

    Been watching this again trying to make a themed build and I had this idea: 3-4 levels of Fighter(Champion). Would that improve the build or take away from it? I'm thinking 9th to 11/12th level.

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 года назад +2

      Every time I think about or play this build I'm tempted to take Fighter levels. You get so much for not a big investment, but I never end up doing it because delaying all those great things like extra attack and higher level spells really really hurts. If I were to do it, I'd probably only go 1 level. If I went as high as 3, I'd personally go Rune Master, though Champion isn't a bad idea since you'll often have triple advantage and with a crit on a 19 or 20 you'll be critting a lot.

  • @edh9999

    My bladesinger (int 20) is using defensive duelist (using only one weapon instead of two), which gives me a reaction that enhances my AC by 6. This saves me from using the shield spell. I have offset the lack of attacks by taking 2 levels of fighter (for action surge). He wears simple studded leather, has armored fighting style. During bladesong, with defensive duelist, I have an AC of 27 against melee attacks. Probably the best tank I have ever played.

    • @Jk-zv6tz
      @Jk-zv6tz 3 года назад +2

      Defensive duelist is a trap. Ac increase of proficiency bonus, for that one attack only. A creature with multi attack then can hit you easier after that first attack. Shield is infinitely better, and it doesn't take up a feat to use. Do what you like, but it certainly isn't optimized.

    • @edh9999
      @edh9999 3 года назад +1

      @@Jk-zv6tz Here's my problem with the Shield spell: you only have a finite number of spell slots, while the Feat can be used every single time I have a free reaction, an infinite number of times per day. No rest required.
      That said, there is something to your comment. That's why 5E is such a good system for me: we all have our own preferred combat actions and the game allows you to adapt it as desired.

    • @Jk-zv6tz
      @Jk-zv6tz 3 года назад +2

      @@edh9999 I've never really had a problem with running out of shield with a BS. Naturally high ac means you only have to use shield very rarely. Add arcane recovery into the mix along with most dms don't do the 4-8 combat encounters per day the books suggest... Just really isn't a problem.
      If most of your campaign is back to back combat without rest, I see a place for DS. How most games a run, it's a wasted ASI/feat that would work better.
      Mobile, better than defensive duelist.
      "Best block Daniel son, No be there" -Mr Miyagi.
      Being able to dart in and out of combat is better than using DS for one attack only, which also eats up your reaction. No more counterspell for you, but at least you blocked 1 single attack lol. If it was a free feat, then sure, it can be useful IF you've somehow run out of 1st spell slots. But eating up a feat or asi for it? Absolutely horrible if optimizing.

    For a level 7 spell, there's Crown of Stars which can give you something to do with your bonus action. If all you are doing is an offhand attack with a regular weapon anyway, this gives you 7 rounds of ranged attacks at 4d12 radiant damage instead. Something to think about.
    BTW I really like your channel, optimization is one of my favourite things to do in D&D, so I can come here and get a educated second opinion on builds I've been thinking about as well.

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  4 года назад +1

      Thank you! I love the Crown of Stars idea as well. Admittedly, when number-crunching I'm upcasting Shadow blade to 7th level (where it caps), but once you also have an 8th level slot, this would obviously be a big bump to sustained damage. Really though, at that point, you're probably *not* going to be using a 7th level+spell slot to upcast Shadow Blade, as there are just so many powerful options, but for the sake of the spread sheets, I might need to add Crown in to a level 17 damage report :).

    I agree with almost everything, very nice guide. I would just to point out that haste has much more value than you said +2 to AC, dex save advantage doubling your movement and than giving you an extra action with limitations but you can still use the dodge action, disengage and so on and last but not least you can up cast it to affect more party members soooo much more value than shadow blade at least in my opinion, and you're right only if you consider only your personal dmg as a melee char but an extra hit from your barbarian/rogue/paladin/fighter should balance the scales.Goblins are awesome bladesinger if they are allowed, and i'm uncertain if you can dual wield while bladesinging maybe i'm wrong but i kinda remember that you need to have an hand free to bladesong

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 года назад

      Haste definitely has a lot of advantages, though if you’re using it just for your own concentration, your damage will be less. Also, it has a big down side: if you lose concentration, you lose an entire turn! As for up-casting, If you’re up casting it to affect more players then you must be playing with home brew rules or playing a sorc with twin spell meta magic 😉

    • @Shamalaya311
      @Shamalaya311 3 года назад +1

      @@DnDDeepDive Ah silly me i was certain that you could up cast haste to add other targets, so i think that haste vs shadow blade showdown changes a bit now shadow blade is fantastic for raw damage but on the right build i still think that haste performs better if used for example on a bladesinger with mobility feat or a goblin with disengage as bonus action so you can dart in and out of melee range with an high level monk like speed without getting any AoO. Sure you lose some damage (kinda more than some) but you can gain a butt load of defence capabilities and we both know that dead/fainted wizards do no damage, so for me it stays as a toss up between the two spells and so the combination of foes and/or battlefield and party status would change which one is the most useful for the fight. Thank you for fact checking me on haste i can't believe i was so wrong about it. May you clarify me a thing? The bladesong feature says that you can't attack with both hands does it refers only for 2h weapons or it applies to dual wielding too? Just because i discarded the dual wielding possibility on my bladesinger because of that

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 года назад +1

      @@Shamalaya311 No worries! My understanding is that you just can't attack using two hands for a single weapon - so even, say, if you tried to go two hands on a versatile weapon, like longsword, you'd lose the benefit, as it says "if you use two hands to make an attack with *a* weapon" (as opposed to, say, "use both hands to make weapon attacks" or something). That said, the damage you get from your "off-hand" is very slight, especially since you're so often using your bonus action for other things. Yes, haste has a lot of great strengths, no doubt. That said, in practice, I find my Bladesinger so tanky, between the shield spell, absorb elements, mirror image, and a great chance to make my dex saves and concentration saves, that I prefer to just stand in the fight and go toe to toe with the baddies, but I've always preferred the high-risk high-reward playstyle :).

    Thoughts on starting as a level 1 fighter for concentration saving throws? Do it, don't do it? Going to start Icewind Dale this Saturday, and it has players go from level 1-12. I rolled super good, 17, 17, 16, 13, 12, 9. So with eladrin elf, dex is 19, int is 18, will take warcaster and then elven accuracy dex 20. So I won't really need the extra ASI at 12th level. Thanks, loved the video, super helpful!

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  4 года назад +1

      Glad you liked it! This is such a tough call - I often waiver back and forth between multiclassing Fighter or not. On the one hand, proficiency in Con and extra HP plus a fighting style (probably Duelist) is really great. On the other, delaying your Shadowblade, your higher level spells, and maybe most painfully, your extra attack (which you already have to wait until 6 for... so now it's 7) is *so* painful. Also, if you're going 1 level in fighter, it so tempting to go 2, because Action Surge is really strong, and if you're going 2, might as well go 3, because picking up an archetype is great, and if 3, then just one more level for an ASI... lol. I tend to just go straight Bladesinger when I do, but maybe just one level in Fighter is totally viable. I'd be even more tempted to do it if I started the campaign at, say, level 7 :).

    You can use Shadowblade and Booming Blade following this steps
    1) Have Two-Weapon Fightingstyle and Dual Wielder feat, and use your weapon of choice and Shadowblade when dual wielding.
    First attack: Shadowblade
    Second attack: Weapon of choice + Booming Blade
    Offhand attack: Shadowblade
    When taking the attack action and having extra attack, you can use whatever the hand you want to attack, but to make this you would have to spend 2 ASI into Dual Wielder + Two-Weapon Fighting. Maybe it would be worth it to take that 1 fighter level to get the fightingstyle.

Because regardless of the level of spell triggering it, you’re still reducing it by half; which is why you cast it... the bonus damage is just icing. And if you’ve already burned all your 1st levels on shields/whatnot, you’re still getting increased benefit.

    I’m trying to piece through a system for more complete comparisons. Rather than damage per swing or damage per swing times swings per round I feel like there should be set encounters for the day at a given level.
    * pair of creatures for 5 battles per day. One with high AC and one with low AC. Ideally one with medium to high saving throws and one with low to medium saving throws. (I don’t know what the XP/CR value of these should be per level tier)
    * group of 5 creatures for 2 battles per day. (This gives an opportunity for AOE focused builds to shine) (some assumptions need to be made for how far apart creatures are in each type of fight. Sometimes things with be adjacent, but that isn’t all the time in every fight)
    * 7 total battles per day as per the DMG. People can house rule any way they like but the basic comparison might as well show intended balance.
    * assumed 4 player party (tricks like darkness and devil’s sight are supremely selfish and not conducive to being in a party because the selfishness robs the other players of the ability to contribute)
    * assume a primary tank who takes 50% of attacks. A secondary tank who takes 25% of attacks and two squishies who take 12.5% of attacks. Melee type characters would always be tank or secondary tank. (I think this needs more thought)
    * assume reaction attack once per 10 rounds. (Unsure of this. There should be some value to reaction based builds while keeping in mind how rare they typically are …. I can go months of D&D sessions without seeing a single one).
    * general goal is to find out how many rounds it takes to kill everything or how many rounds before the build dies. There needs to be a version to track DPS, damage mitigation, healing output, and support based options (reduced enemy damage from paralysis or whatever) (I think this needs a lot of work)
    * assumptions need to be made on anything that only has a chance to trigger. Statistically you know how often a build will crit or kill a thing for great weapon master. That’s easy. Polearm master is harder. With only one reaction and multiple targets some percentage of the time you’ll get to use a reaction on both. Other times they will both trigger the same round and you can only do it once. This includes things like elven accuracy and things that trigger from advantage. I feel like a thing like sneak attack can be relied on 80-90% of the time, and the occasions where the rogue doesn’t get it need to be accounted for … because that happens in games.
    I don’t know what the key levels are but I think doing that for every level is a bad idea.
    3, 5, 8, 10, 12
    That’s what I’m leaning towards. Personally, I have no value for what happens at higher levels because I’ve been playing since the 90’s and games just never seem to run that long.

    Might be worth thinking about a Shadow Blade build for Sorcs.
    The two key ideas are twin spell and quicken spell, use them with Booming Blade to double your attacks for your action and attack again with Booming Shadow Blade as a bonus action. This not only gets you additional attacks, but adds quite a bit of scaling damage as well.
    I realize Sorc points kind of mess with sustained damage, but if you liquidate your spell slots (above lvl 1 - keep those for shield) into points, you can keep it up for quite a while.
    Possibly worth taking one level in CFV Ranger to start. You get 10 starting HP, a D10+1 Temp HP, a shield for your off hand, and non-concentration Hunters Mark.
    I realize this gives up the advantage owl, but Sorc subclass features like Shadow Sorc or Wild Magic could get non-dim-light advantage back.

    I have loved bladesinger since 2e and 5e is the best version. I would note that at levels 2-5 you get more out of Flaming Sphere. About 25% more damage on a single target. More of you can position it next to more than one target. It also sets up a wonderful lose-lose situation for the target. Stand still and eat more damage from the Flaming Sphere or move and trigger the extra damage from Booming Blade and potentially opportunity attacks.

Now I'm doing a multiclass but honestly the 3 lvl of fighter I plan to take at lvl 12-14 is just for char concept but there some good benefits. I took medium armor master at lvl 4 and will be taking mounted combatant at lvl 8.
    At lvl 7 I have a 23 ac and cast blur at round 1. Blur is huge till lvl 11. Once I get my spell storing item at 11 tactics change to having my defender cast warding bond on me. At that point my concentration spell will be haste. So basically I'll have an ac of 28 (25 without any spell due to infusions. Add 1 from warding bond and 2 from haste.) Plus you now have resistances to all damage and double your hitpoints due to sharing your mount hitpoints from warding bond(which never gets hit due to mounted feat). So at lvl 11 you got 3 attacks. Very high ac. Now I want to get calvalier subclass so that I can give even more disadvantages to enemies besides just my defender. That's the jest of it. If you want more info let me know

    1 extra attack that your bladesinger deals might pale compare to shadow blade. But how about allowing the rogue to do a second sneak attack? would his sneak attack pale compare to yours? what about if he's a arcane tricker with shadow blade+booming blade+sneak attack, do his second sneak attack pale compare to yours?
    What if you use haste to buff teh nova bursting paladin? or the raging barbarian using a powerful magical weapon?
    And haste is not only 1 extra weapon swing, it's also double your speed, you you might reach your target without requiring the dash action. It's also +2AC and advantage on dex saving throws. If that 2AC and advantage allow you to avoid more damage, that mean more round attacking (and less damage = less chance to fail a concentration check, even with war caster do enought and you are bound to fail one eventually.
    Dismissing Haste is easy on a theorical character like on your show, where the ennemy are nicely lined up waiting for your character to slice them up. My DM like to scatter them (so I cannot ut fireball them all)
    Then hold person/monster? allowing the entire team to do all critical hit on the target? does your shadow blade does more damage then shadow blade?
    As for weakness, remember you are still just a d6 HitDice wizard. so if you get hit by a few attack/AoE you can quickly go down. your dex saving thrown isn't that great (+5 if you got a 20 dex) your constitution saving throws isn't that higher neither, so poison cloud spell, cone of cold, fireball work great against you. If you cannot see the target cast the spell (use an item like a staff or a wand, sorcerer with subtle spell, or target siply around the corner so no line of sight etc...) you cannot counterspell it,
    Remain at range, the Bladedancer abilities are all focused around being in melee, so if the target is at range (or flying) you are force to drop shadow blade to get flying and reach them, or to revert to a normal wizard (still bet class in game) and shoot range spell without any tradition benefit

  • @mattrmarshall

    A comment on Absorb Elements. I think many people misunderstand this spell. The spell gives Resistance (which is 50% damage reduction) regardless of what level it’s cast at. The level cast only affects the reflected damage. So, the spell doesn’t only absorb 1d6, it absorbs 50%, quite good and scales very well for a 1st level spell.

      It does not absorb 1d6 damage and confer a 50% damage resistance. You gain 50% damage resistance to the triggering type of elemetal damage, correct. The 1d6 comes in the form of damage added to the next melee strike you make. This 1d6 increases by 1d6 when upcast, but it does not further reduce the damage you take.

    • @mattrmarshall
      @mattrmarshall 3 года назад

      @@joshraney5723 Yes. That's what I said. In the video, he mentioned that it only absorbed 1d6 damage. I was correcting him that it is 50% reduction, much better than a flat 1d6, especially at higher levels.

    Cool video/build. The only small problem I had with the build was the dual wielding which you addressed mostly in another comment. Something to remember, on top of not being able to dual wield a rapier and short sword together, is that you would only have proficiency with one of the two weapons. So, if you wanted to dual wield you would either have to pick short sword proficiency at level 2 or just pick rapier and forget about dual wielding. You could get around this by being a non Aereni High Elf as then you would have Elven weapon proficiency, or by multi-classing. Two spells I would highly recommend checking out though are the level 5 spell Steel Wind Strike and the level 6 spell Tenser's Transformation. Both are very cool and fit the Bladesinger well. A final thing to consider would be starting out as either a level 1 Fighter, for weapon proficiencies, hp boost, con save, and dueling/dual wielding fighting style, or a level 1 Rogue, this is actually what I did for my character, for a ton of skills, expertise, weapon proficiencies, and an extra 1d6 damage from sneak attack which can be applied to booming blade/green-flame blade or your shadowblade attacks. Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I really enjoyed the video and keep up the good work.

    Something for your consideration. If you are really leaning into the melee aspect of this build, with your 7th level spell selections, with one of your choices try picking up.....Simulacrum. By having an extra "you" to control you double up on your ability to concentrate on certain spells. So while you prime can wade into battle with shadow blade, beta you can concentrate on Haste for Prime. This will give you double movement, a +2 bonus to your AC, and a sweet extra attack for your shadow blade.
    In addition, because of this benefit (Pre Tasha's release and I imagine at least at certain tables) you would be able to cantrip booming blade and still make an attack with shadow blade in the same round of combat.
    There are a few other minor tweaks here and there that could net you more overall dps with this particular build. I have a similar build to this, but instead of bladesinger I went with Abjuration Wizard. It yields a very hilarious playstyle and an exceedingly tanky wizard.

    great video thanks for sharing, one thing i noticed nobody else metion is the 6th level spell tensers transformation which blew my mind.
    You endow yourself with endurance and martial prowess fueled by magic. Until the spell ends, you can’t cast spells, and you gain the following benefits:
    - You gain 50 temporary hit points. If any of these remain when the spell ends, they are lost.
    - You have advantage on attack rolls that you make with simple and martial weapons.
    - When you hit a target with a weapon attack, that target takes an extra 2d12 force
    damage.
    - You have proficiency with all armor, shields, simple weapons, and martial weapons.
    - You have proficiency in Strength and Constitution saving throws.
    - You can attack twice, instead of once, when you take the Attack action on your turn. You ignore this benefit if you already have a feature, like Extra Attack, that gives you extra attacks.
    Immediately after the spell ends, you must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion.

    I could switch out to a bow, as an elf, for a stealth mission and thanks to decent dex actually hit with it. I had spells for when I needed to blow stuff up and best of all I had an ac of 20+ most rounds.
    Stuff like that combined with the fact you are full spellcaster really let's you interect with all aspects of the game not just combat. If you can't find a reason to do something as a blade singer you are playing it wrong.
    Great videos been on a tear watching them. Keep up the good work.
    I know you focus on dpr but have you considered doing a series for tanks? I know it's harder to quantify what makes a good tank but I think it would be good for those of us who like to tank up a few enemies while our team mates dish out the damage. So the math on Haste isn’t that far off of Shadow Blade. Especially if you are in bright light. In bright light haste vs AC 10 is 31.95 vs 32.7 and you get a +2 to your AC.
    Flaming sphere if you upcast to level 3 is 36 dpr if everything hits vs 36.5 if everything hits with shadow blade. Flaming sphere also pushes the booming blade to trigger. So depending on the situations one route may be better or at least as good as Shadow Blade.

      Vs shadow blade 2 attacks with shadow blade 16.5 +16.5, bonus action attack 3.5. (36.5).
      The difference is you get more damage from Crits with the shadow blade. So it has a slight edge. But on a creature with 45 hp it would still take you two rounds to kill it with either set up so the difference of one or two dpr doesn’t really matter a whole lot.
      Shadow blade wins with damage but haste gives you the +2 to AC so balance that how you will. Haste also comes with the risk of being stunned for one round if you lose haste.

      Interesting concept with Flaming Sphere - nice find. I wonder though - the spell description says that anyone *within* 5 feet of it at the end of their turn takes damage. To me that would indicate that, if you ram it into your enemy that's standing next to you as your bonus action, you would then be within 5 feet, meaning you'd need to move back, risking an opportunity attack. I wonder if that's the correct interpretation...

    • @davidjohnson4657
      @davidjohnson4657 3 года назад +1

      @@DnDDeepDive Hmm, I think the sphere has its own space so it does not share the space with the creature, like a 5 foot beach ball that is on fire. So you stand in front of the creature, the flaming sphere is behind it. So you end up 10 feet away from the sphere. I looked for a sage advice to confirm but couldn't find it so there is some room for interpretation there.
      I didn't figure out how to combine the damage calculation of DC/save for half with the weapon damage yet. Need to spend some time with excel.
      Shadow Blade in dim light still comes out ahead but in bright light or cases when the flaming sphere could damage multiple enemies it could be better. That is why I love the bladesinger so much. Great DPR and AC plus the versatility of a wizard.

      I suppose it depends on whether or not they move (or have an ally within 5 ft. for GFB) after, and what level you're upcasting Shadow Blade at... at 17th level, assuming you're using Shadow Blade as a 7th level spell, you'd get 5d8 for the initial attack, plus 3d8 for the booming blade attack. Obviously you'd be better off with just 2 attacks in that case unless the target moved... I do like the Sorc dip for Spiritual weapon and quickened spell, I just hate delaying the higher level spells and the level 14 Bladesinger bonus, but yeah, Booming blade then Quickened spell Booming blade would be devastating (if not sustainable with 3 levels of Sorc...)

      Hey man - sorry I haven’t responded to the email - I just read it and I like the build. Lots of versatility. That said, yeah, it’s really hard to compete, Damage-wise, with any build that doesn’t use either GWM or sharpshooter. The only reason the Bladesinger can get close is because Shadowblade hits so hard. The greatest weakness for Rogues is that, while sneak attack is good, they only get it on one attack per round, which is why it always feels to be like, if you’re trying to optimize their damage, it should be done in a way to try and get big bursts, usually at the beginning of combat (ideally with surprise). Barb levels give you lots of things like grappling, damage resist, etc, which are great (it’s not *all* about DPR), but without access to *multiple per round* big hitting attacks, they’ll typically fall behind in sustained damage.
      But if you’re having fun playing the character, then you should absolutely continue doing so! They are viable and have plenty of strengths :).

    Odds are good this is just an issue of pedantic semantics on my part! If so, totally ignore this. If not, I may see an error.
    Are you backing out the chance to crit from the chance to hit? For example:
    * If you have a 50% chance to hit (hit on 11 or higher)
    * And if you have a 5% chance to crit ....
    * Your actual chance to hit is 45% because 5% of that time you got a critical hit rather than a regular hit. You miss on a roll of 1-10, you hit on a roll of 11-19, and you crit on a roll of 20.
    I'm reading your description of the math and I am certain I don't see it. It doesn't really matter if the description lacks a tiny dumb detail as long as the math includes it. I'm looking at the math in your spreadsheet and I don't think I see this represented.

      Your graph's level 6 damage va AC 15 shows 41. I ran my algorithm and I got 34.34. The first time I ran it I accidentally included offhand dexterity modifier damage and didn't decrease the die size and I got the same 41 you had (41.595). As I went in to correct for the offhand damage on the shortsword I realized, this shortsword isn't the shadowblade. It wouldn't have advantage due to darkness which would rob this attack of both advantage and the elven accuracy bonus. (my errors that lead me to your number: included dex modifier on offhand, rolled 1D8 instead of 1D6, included advantage and elven accuracy on a shortsword that doesn't inherently get advantage in dim light)
      That dropped the average damage per swing of this attack from 7.949 down to 2.45. (from 1D8+3 with elven advantage, down to 1D6 with no modifier to damage and no advantage or elven accuracy)
      This also dropped the full round's damage from 41.595 down to 34.34.
      This still compares favorably to a greatsword wielded by a halforc with great weapon fighting style and great weapon and an ASI into strength for an extra +1 to hit and damage. That version would output 10.668 per swing dealing roughly 21 in a regular round and roughly 32 on any round when they get their bonus action attack for great weapon master. The blade singer is still poised to deal almost 7% extra damage per round (which sounds like a lot ... but it's about 2 damage per round)
      This also means that virtually any 6th level character with two greatsword swings and the fighting style and feat can match the damage output at level 6 assuming the bonus attack does trigger, and assuming shadow blade concentration is never lost).
      Now, what this damage output doesn't do is take ANY chance for losing shadow blade into account. Even with a bonus to your concentration and advantage on the roll it's possible for it to drop even in the first round (just like it isn't likely but it's possible to miss even with elven accuracy and +7 to hit AC 15).

      I’d be happy to share my JavaScript files for this stuff with you.
      It may be possible to duplicate the functionality in something like Google spreadsheets. Most of the math isn’t very hard. I’m not sure how to do all of it in there though.
      For example to calculate accuracy I do use a random number generator to roll the die in question hundreds of thousands of times. Then tally those up. In the case of the Halfling if the original roll value is 1 it will trigger a reroll and only the second roll is tabulated.
      That gives me the odds that a given number will be rolled on a D20. So, then I calculate the hit chance and back out the crit chance and you have an idea for how many attacks out of 100 would do a regular hit of damage.
      Calculating damage isn’t too hard. You need four version of each weapon damage die. No modifiers, great weapon fighting style, savage attacker feat, and both great weapon and savage attacker feat. Then you use the average result of that die and multiply by the number of dice and then add in the modifier. Each source of damage is calculated separately so if you have a slashing sword that has extra fire damage and also radiant damage you can track each of those separately to take residence and immunity and vulnerability into account. The half orc racial just requires you to look at each die involved in the total attack and take immunity and the rest into account then use the one with the most benefit (so a 1D12 great axe dealing fire that also does 1D4 radiant damage would leave the halforc doing an extra 1D4 radiant damage to the fire immune source … but only on a critical hit).
      At some point I’ll build a front end for it and serve it from a backend. That will let anyone type in numbers and pick options to calculate the damage for an attack. Right now it’s just the raw functionality.

Spirit Shroud would be 3d6 and 3d8 for all of your attacks combined, for a total of 24 if everything lands. The problem with upcasting, is that it only gets bumped at spell level 5, and at level 5 you should probably be using Animate Objects unless the enemy is resistant to non-magical attacks... but let's say they *are* resistant to non-magical attacks, in which case a 5th level Shadowblade would do 8d8 total (two attacks) plus 1d6 for the off hand for 39.5 total damage, whereas Spirit Shroud would be 3d6 plus 6d8 for 37.5. Still off by two. What am I missing?

      With the errata Bladesinger's can cast a cantrip with extra attack, replacing one of their attacks. GFB and Booming Blade doesn't work with Shadowblade, although you may be able to handwave that. Otherwise you would miss out on a scaling d8 damage, plus it's potential for secondary damage. You also forget the possibility of magic weapons, while not as good as advantage, can make a difference.
      Spirit Shroud isn't great at 3rd level, it's a spell that really shines when upcast. It will beat out Shadowblade when upcast to 4th - simply because Shadowblade doesn't scale at 4th. The difference being 7 average damage - 37.5 vs. 30.5, and goes up by 4.5 with a SCAG cantrip.
      Upcast at 5th level is +3d8 to all your attacks, so with extra attack and bonus action attack that's +9d8 - meaning 44 average damage, compared to Shadowblade's 39.5. With a SCAG cantrip the difference goes up to 4.5 and 9 damage respectively.
      Neither beats Animate Object, but very few things do. There is potential however with Contingency and Haste, letting Spirit Shroud upcast to 6th - assuming 18 dex, two shortswords - with one at +1, and SCAG cantrip - that's 2d8 + (4d8 x4) + (1d6+5 x3) + (1d6) = 110 average damage. Animbate Object would be around 78 average damage if upcast at 6th, but for less resources.
      Shadowblade is still best at 2nd and 3rd level, even if you can't cast SCAG cantrips with it.

      @@Vatis93 Yes, wasn't considering the BB/GFB "buff" (feels like a red herring but only because it doesn't work with Shadow Blade which makes me sad :) ). But I think you might be misreading the way it upscales: it goes up 1d8 for every *two* levels above 3rd. So at 5th level it's an extra 2d8 per attack for a total of 6d8. That said, I think the new summon spells might be even better... check out Summon Fey or Construct cast at lvl 4...

      Indeed - it is a tragedy! Planning on doing a 2.0 sometime in the near future, but honestly from levels 3 to 8 you're probably just making 2 attacks with Shadowblade instead of casting a cantrip (the cantrip thing is only optional). I *think* you can use your off hand short sword to booming blade opportunity attack (via War Caster) if it ever comes up... I can't think of why you couldn't, at least. Once you hit 9 your concentration goes to Animate Objects and you booming blade action with a rapier. Stay tuned for details :)

      Pair this with other character with sentinel and your own booming blade and you will get hit way less. That of course helps with concentration and defensive spell management.

      Jeremy Crawford commented on this. And this may not prohibit shadow blade and booming blade. “This change has nothing to do with prohibiting or allowing Shadow Blade to combine with Booming/Green-Flame Blade. It's about fixing those two cantrips. As DM, I'd allow those them to combo, since I make liberal use of the rule on improvised weapons.”

      Crawford’s comment seems to indicate the change to a weapon worth 1 sp was meant to prevent the weapon from being substituted with an arcane focus or component pouch.

    I absolutely love your guides, man. Just discovered your channel. Are you taking into account the number of fights per day with these things? DMG page 84 days 6-7 medium to hard fights per day.
    Most tables play “wrong” and do so accidentally. This unintentionally makes players stronger and makes enemies feel weaker.
    For example the blade song you get starts with 2 uses per day. You have that for 6-8 fights. Meaning you get it for 25-33% of encounters. That’s the intention. That AC is outstanding. But, you aren’t designed to have it for more than half of your encounters until you get +4 proficiency bonus.

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 года назад

      Thanks and welcome! Right, I explain this a little better in later videos, I think, but generally, when I crunch numbers for "sustainable" DPR, the threshold is that they are capable of doing that level of damage for *at least* one entire combat encounter per day. I appreciate that that's a very low bar to set, and *most* builds are capable of hitting those numbers for multiple encounters per day. Very few, however, are getting up to 6-8, and the reason for that, I think, is, like you said, the fact that most tables (based on what I've read and polling I've done amongst my audience) are typically only seeing 2-4 encounters per long rest, with 1-2 per short rest. That's how it's always been at our table as well. So, yes, if your table is seeing a lot more than that number of combats per day, then the Fighters of the world get a lot stronger (though Barbarians, by contrast, tend to be in the same boat as spell casters in that scenario, since they are limited on Rage use).

    • @zero11010
      @zero11010 3 года назад

      @@DnDDeepDive I hear you. I built a tool that does damage calculation. It determines accuracy for about 13 different conditions (from Halfling reroll on a 1 to disadvantage and every combination). And it covers damage modifiers (from great weapon fighting style to savage attacker feat).
      When I compare damage output I calculate damage per swing. Assuming 100 attacks on the same target and combining average hit, miss, and crit damage taking accuracy and crit chance into account.
      I tend to calculate the damage you can expect to deal per swing and then look at what resources you have to spend to maintain that.
      For example at level 3 the blade singer doesn’t have enough second level spell slots to cast the shadow blade in every fight. When you compare that to a greatsword wielding character that feels important. If you assume 7 fights per day the disparity grows.
      I think it boils down to consistency. If you make your numbers totally consistent it feels like the safest comparison.

    • @DnDDeepDive
      @DnDDeepDive  3 года назад

      Actually, you summon it as a bonus action, and from that point, it's your weapon and functions essentially like other weapons. So the first round you summon it, you'd make your attack(s) with it as your action. From there, each turn you'd just attack with it using your action, and do something else with a bonus action (most likely an "off hand" attack with a short sword, etc.)

    Why are you buying this stuff? Wizards can't use the weapons or armor (yet) and need a spellbook and other things that are expensive. The standard stuff given will give them a spellbook, a pack, a dagger or a quarterstaff and a component pouch or an arcane focus. Their background will give them other stuff like clothes and cash. A gold buy will give them 4d4 x10 GP, which might not be enough to get everything they need. Wait to buy stuff you need at second level after you have earned some money.
    I find the blending of cantrips and spells under the heading spells to be annoying. Even now I don't always recognize the difference in the writeups.
    The whole "spells" category is really inadequate for Wizards. Do you mean spells in the spellbook or spells prepared?
    Why purchase armor? Because you can get an AC of 15/18 without spending any spell slots, OR you can get an AC of 16/19 for eight hours by spending a spell slot. That is too high a price at low levels.
    I would take Elven Accuracy and save Warcaster for 8th level. Increasing your Dex to 18 and giving you three d20s to roll when you have advantage seems to be better for a melee character. You can sheathe your shortsword when you won't be Bladesinging.
    As far as having a hand free to cast spells, have you ever heard of sword knots?
