    Sage advice answered the question about sunlight sensitivity talking about wildshaped druids still suffer from the penalty "unless the beast form lacks sight. Sunlight Sensitivity requires sight". So the upshot is that no matter how you can see, if you're using your eyes you have the penalty, but if you're not using your eyes, you don't. So it appears the blindfold+blindsight is legit per sage advice.

  • @mrjek01
    @mrjek01 3 года назад +59

    I'm with you on the interpretation that blind-fighting would eliminate the disadvantage on perception and attack rolls in direct sunlight(within the first 10'). Thematically, I would say, a deep hooded cloak and blindfold during such times would be really cool!

    • @clo8076
      @clo8076 3 года назад +4

      Not to mention the idea of a partial dragon resistant to fire would be harmed by sunlight on its skin. Lol! Kobolds are supposed top be subterranean creatures, that just tells me their eyes aren’t used to bright light. As a DM, I’d totally let a kobold lose disadvantage if they blindfight, especially with a hood, as in your idea.

    • @josephlieberman8295
      @josephlieberman8295 3 года назад +1

      @@clo8076 At our table while you'd be welcome to avoid the penalty by doing this, it literally means you can't see enemies, terrain, etc greater than 10' away and raising or lowering such a hood or similar blindfold would be an action. In short, there's really little benefit to doing this unless your opponents are standing still.

      @@Ichiryu000 I imagine this more than just a hood. You're talking about putting a blindfold on. A turn is 6 seconds , it's not like it's an elastic sleep mask, you'd have to secure it in place. But hey, everyone's table is different. Essentially this is a debate about how to sidestep a built-in disadvantage, some tables are just going to flat out say "you can't" - For instance the argument that being IN sunlight is the trigger for this disadvantage, regardless of if you can see. So RAW this achieves nothing to begin with.

    • @guyfawkes8873
      @guyfawkes8873 2 года назад +2

      Blindfighting in my interpretation isn’t mutually exclusive with vision. I mean why is your blindsight turned off just because your eyes are open? Doesn’t make much sense if you look at animals with sonar or similar. There’s no reason why you couldn’t use your blindsight within 10’ and your vision beyond that.

    Errata: Kobolds only get a +2, not a +2 *and* a +1, so we'd have to take a hit to either Dex or Con if we wanted to go 13 Wis for Cleric (another reason to consider just doing Divine Soul).
    Also, to clarify: I realize that pushing your enemy away would likely move them away from your ally and move them out of the 10' reach of your spirit shroud damage, thus greatly reducing the nova damage numbers - my intent was *not* to transmute scorching ray to lightning during the nova round, simply present all the amount of enemy movement you could potentially do as an option. @@DnDDeepDive The RP of the Dragon Sorcerer is quite fun to play around with. As is the Dragon 'Mage Armor'. But the huge amount of versatility and the extra points we get to put into important stats (especially if ur using the Kobold) IMO makes the Divine Soul the optimal choice.
      Personally I'd Go with Custom Lineage for 'Race' choice & pick up Fey Touched as my bonus feat. Thus starting with an 18 Cha and making a capped modifier much quicker. I honestly still feel that Elemental Adept is a bit redundant, and a Feat is a heavy investment. I would probably go with Tough or Lucky.

    Well, if your goal was to deal pure damage, I think tiefling+flames of phlegethos deserves a special mention and is stronger then the kobold if you can't get pack tactics to trigger. Winged tiefling is obviously broken, but the others from MtoF are decent options. Nowadays you probably want to go custom lineage.
    Since you already are a hexblade, you should consider green flame blade. Especially with quicken spell.
    I would definitely pick up shield for one of the hexblade spells known.
    The two levels of Fighter do wonders to your one round burst damage, but I think they are otherwise pretty lackluster. You have a short rest single target ability from hexblade already, I don't think action surge to burn through your resources quicker is that necessary in actual play. Getting more spells, slots, sorcery points and faster ability score improvements seems more valuable overall. You will be less of a one trick pony overall and still do great damage.
    Special mention to magic missile which also does great damage with hexblade's curse in case you need to circumvent fire resistance/immunity or high armor class.
    There are a number of easy ways to thwart your calculations in actual play: Sunlight, no ally adjacent (e.g. because the target teleported), opponents near you just to name a few. Just adding a level of hexblade to a fire heavy draconic sorcerer seems much more versatile while giving up very little.

    For the question at ~33min about sunlight sensitivity and blind fighting, I'd say the most intuitively sensible interpretation is that the "that rely on sight" bit applies to both. The context (it's given to races that in the lore have traditionally lived mostly underground), the co-text (the phrasing being in a way that makes it interpretable when, if they wanted to say all attack rolls rather than just sight-reliant ones, they could've easily specified that), and the mechanics (the fact that you don't have to be in direct sunlight, so long as your target is) all point to that. Bright light make eye go aegh

    • @SkyNinja759

      MotM makes me want to run a red chromatic Dragonborn dragonic sorcerer instead.
      Get resistance to fire naturally instead of having to spend a sorcery point for temp resistance. Then immunity to fire for a minute as an action to nuke yourself with a quickened fireball.
      You also get a few uses of the breath weapon to save on spell slots per long rest.
      The option to have a sorcerer just coat himself in lingering fire while immune somehow/way and laugh while he has 13 + dex AC is also a funny situation. Then there's taking a dive in lava if the DM allows it, because you are _immune,_ bonus points if you hug an enemy before you dive in.

    That's a solid build. I actually play as a tiefling sorcerer with two core talents: Flames of Phlegethos and Elemental Adept. Basically, whenever I make an attack with fire damage, I have the ability to reroll any 1s that come up on the dice. In the event that I'm unlucky and roll another 1, it is treated as a 2 instead. But that's not all. When I use a fire magic attack, Phlegethos grants me a fire armor that causes anyone who hits me to be lit up and take an additional 1d4 fire damage. And to top it off, I can ignore fire resistance. I absolutely adore this build. If you choose the Draconic Bloodline for your sorcerer, at level 6, you can add your Charisma modifier to every attack made with your ancestral element, resulting in a significant amount of damage per turn.

Could take metamagic adept to get a few twinned spells or a quickened one or fey touched for more damage at levels 3/4. Note on Catapult: if the target saves, the projectile keeps going to the next viable target in the path of the throw. Just had my wife's wizard Catapult a rock toward the back of the head of the enemy in front of her - it saved, she didn't and took a rock to the face. (Also had a party nearly kill a friendly NPC due to the baddie making the save and the ally being in the projectile's path)

      @DnDDeepDive  3 года назад +1

      Right - the only problem with Bestow Curse is the extra round of set up - I love it for fights against a BBEG that you *know* are going long. With the Hold spells, I ultimately decided against because, as they require your concentration and take an action to cast, on your nova round, you'd get half the attacks for double the dice, minus the extra damage from Hex or Spirit Shroud. Also, the crit only counts if you're standing 5 feet away from the Paralyzed target, so you'd now need to get the Crossbow Expert feat to keep advantage. Just got a little weird. Overall might be better damage for your entire party, depending on your party. Worth considering.

    The only thing that doesn't work is that Roy doesn't need blind fighting... because of being a kobold.
    Maybe his hex object could be the pocket watch? (Not a weapon, but he won't use the weapon skills of the class).
    If your DM allows MTG material, I'd look at pyromancer as your sorcerer subclass. Unfortunately 2 fighter/1 hexblade means you never get the 18th level feature that turns fire immunity into resistance.

    anyway my only quip here is that RAW destructive wrath applies to all rays. as per JC and the PHB, when you cast scorching ray (unlike attacking with weapons) you resolve all attacks/choose targets at the same time (you can't wait and see if an opponent dies to a ray before sending an extra ray to another target). due to this all the attacks of the spell scorching ray are treated as one instance (because they are happening all at the same time) and therefore all are maximized. all attacks for scorching ray are resolved 1st then dmg resolution for all rays happens together (and this is where you activate destructive wrath).

    An alternate version that trades some damage for control, versatility, and access to higher level spells: Hexblade 1 for armor, hexblade’s curse, and hex. Then Graviturgist 6 for Scorching Ray, Spirit Shroud, and Gravity Well. Then Fighter 2 for Action Surge. It would require a discussion with the DM, but a fair interpretation of the wording of Gravity Well is that you would get 5 feet of forced moment for every spell attack roll that you land, no saving throw. The direction is unspecified, so that could be straight up - which means you add fall damage to your attack, plus imposing the prone condition. At wizard level six it would be 2d6 bludgeoning for a 20 foot fall if you land all four rays from a third level casting (rather than the flat +4 from Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer’s Elemental Affinity), so not a ton, admittedly. But it would provide some of the forced movement that you liked about the Tempest cleric, add a bit of extra damage, and not sacrifice access to higher level spells from additional multiclassing- in addition to providing all the versatility of a Wizard when you’re not doing the nova round.

    I had an idea for an alternate way to get scorching ray to combine with Thunderous Strike: Order of Scribes Wizard. As per the text of the level 2 Awakened Spellbook ability "When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend." Getting this to work at every level would require significant investment into your spellbook, but given how easily wizards are usually able to obtain new spells, it seems very feasible (of note is that there isn't a single fifth level spell that does lightning damage, which fucking sucks, but that's just part of the game we play [and I'm sure a lenient DM would be willing to permit a single random homebrew spell that's just flame strike but lightning or something similar]). Doing the combination this way means you only have to do a two level dip into wizard and the six into cleric, giving you fourteen levels to play with as you wish. I think this sounds like a lot of fun, though there are a few disadvantages when compared to the Flame Thrower. I'd still play it this way myself, personally, but maybe that's just me.

      fiend: dark one's own luck, pact of the talisman

    You should consider getting empowered spell. It is dirt cheap to use and you can decide whether to use it or not AFTER you see the rolls on your spell (even if you already used some metamagic), meaning that you can use it when you cast a fireball and see 2 or 3 bad rolls for easily an extra 20 to 50 damage across all targets. I even use it on scorching ray sometimes as dealing an extra 10 to 15 damage is a great deal for a single sorcery point. It is far more useful than quickened spell at lower levels and even at higher levels you will find yourself using it a lot.

    But then I'm also someone who would let anyone who wanted to play barbarian either play a half-orc (mechanically) and reskin it as whatever they wanted for the RP, or, without much persuasion needed (because, and I'll acknowledge my bias as someone who loves barbarian+3 dip into fighter for champion greataxe half orcs) let them take savage attacks somehow (as a homebrew feat, trading it for another racial ability etc), so maybe I'd also be a bit too generous to allowing cool stuff.

    If I'm doubling down on fire damage with sorcerer I tend to start with the Pyromancer sorcerer in the Plane Shift Kaladesh pdf. Pick green flame blade and firebolt among your starting cantrips.
    After a few levels of sorcerer take either 3 or 6 levels of celestial warlock. Pick tome pact, and get a CHA shillelagh. Seriously consider going to 6th level for the feature that adds your Cha mod to fire and radiant spells.
    Stack the feats war caster, polearm master, and maybe flames of phlegethos if you're a tiefling. Get a staff and use it to deliver green flame blades on your opportunity attacks.
    Take sorcerer the rest of the way, or take a 2 level detour into paladin for armor, shields, smites, a single level increase to your sorcerer caster levels, and a fighting style.
    If magic items are on the table get illusionist bracers and cast green flame blade up to 3 times every round depending on enemy movement.
    I did the math once for a level 6 pyro sorc/6 celestial lock green flame blade with polearm master and war caster. If you get the main attack and the opportunity attack you roll about as many d8's as a similar level rogue would roll d6's on sneak attack, plus you add your cha mod 2 to 4 times on each target. If you add those 2 levels of paladin you're then free to burn sorc and lock spell slots on smite for more d8's.
    The upside of this over hexblade and dragon sorc is you're freed up to pick non blade pact invocations, you have a lot more healing options, and when you inevitably face a fire immune enemy your radiant spells are a reliable option.

    I've done a similar build, but instead of going kobold, I went with Tiefling.
    Flames of Phlegethos racial feat effectively gives you a free empowered spell metamagic on all fire spells with no sorc point cost, and helps you out if you even get caught in melee by making it less appealing to hit you (as you get a mini fireshield)
    I debated either going 6 levels of Hexblade warlock to pick up med armor prof, Hexblade's Curse, Spirit Shroud, Armor of Agathys and Eldritch Smite (I was playing a Gish)
    Transmute and upcast Spirit Shroud from cold to fire
    Transmute AoA from cold to fire
    And run around point blank blasting scorching ray in people's faces while being a living fireball

    Hey, I'd love to see a whispers bard build if you're up for it. The class never see's a lot of love but I really enjoy the flavour of it.

      Check out the Lockadin if you haven’t yet. It’s not *really* a Whispers Bard build, but by the end it actually has more Whispers levels than anything :P (it’s also the build I’m playing in our current campaign!)

    Should do an update for this considering MotM.
    I came here wondering for ways to use Jim's magic missle, a spell that I think might have some potential as a Better eldritch blast...
