Hey MCDM! Loving the series so far. Just so you know, on page 168 of the DMG is a magic item called "Elven Chain", which might be able to be crafted with the Sin Metal. It's a chain shirt (+1) that people who are not proficient in medium armor can wear. Might be perfect for Leech, and as a Drow he may have heard of it or something similar. Seems like a good compromise that doesn't rely on you having to skirt the fact that Leech is only proficient in light armor as a warlock.
I think it's so cool that Matt simply let Tom change Boot's class. So many DMs are just like ''Yeah no,I don't care if you don't like being a sorcerer and would like to be wizard instead, just make a new character''
Barokai Rein Lots of DM’s forget it’s just a game between you and your friends, that you can and should do whatever improves everyone’s experience. Now of course that doesn’t mean being a pushover, obviously the restraints of the game bring enjoyment otherwise we’d all just join improv clubs and never touch something with as many rules and regulations as D&D. There is no rule that says you CANT change classes anyway.
Death is always an Option for Changing A characters class. In this situation with a new player who has grown attached and is having fun with the character, but feels they got the thematics wrong
Under the circumstances, it was the right call. A new player with little understanding of the mechanics could easily create a character that doesn’t do what the player wants. In the end, Boots never changed as a character. Only his skill sets changed, and those only minimally given the low level.
Easily the best pre-roll introduction to a D&D game I've ever seen... granted pre-roll isn't incredibly common for these types of videos, but still massively effective!
I can't wait for the day Copper comes in to a room ridding big cat exclaims" introducing my lord Sir Boots the well footed slayer of the undead Drow commander and friend of the cobeler"
Regardless, that’s a +6 (double prof) from expertise, and I assume his charisma is at least +4. Hence the +10. With guidance from king, a 15 is totally doable with a natural 1.
@@glukolover Yeah, it's one of the limitations of Matt's philosophy that the DM doesn't need to know PC Class mechanics, the players do. If the players make a mistake, Matt isn't going to catch it. It's one of the reasons I'm a big fan of players printing out the full, exact text of their entire Race/Class/Background rules and stapling them with their character sheets. No Cliff's Notes version written in an indecipherable shorthand. Full, exact, unedited rules right there where you need them. That way, you don't get slip-ups like this one, or Lars' misconception that Clerics can alter their prepared spells without a long rest.
@@trequor Try it. Saves _so_ much time. Ultimately, any rules dispute/misunderstanding/confusion is going to be resolved by looking at the actual text of the rules. Have the text right there.
I love that there's a big stuffed (I think) bear wearing a Mountie uniform in the @Hubbleablubble art of the Magic Depository, it's exactly like what you'd see in a tourist trap t-shirt shop in Victoria or Vancouver.
Matt would you be willing when this adventure is done to write a campaign guide to sell online? I think its a really interesting world you've made here and I think by the time the adventure is done everything that has been a work in progress as the adventure unfolds would be finalized. IMO a lot of people would be interested in playing a campaign set in Capital with a finalized map and factions, especially if you include that amazing prologue to start off the campaign.
Idea: what if the Chain do get their knighthoods from House Boots, but then House Boots pledges allegiance to one of the major houses, such as House Alvarro? Would that not solve the problem of "casting their lot with House Boots"? They would still retain a single knighthood, but they would actually work with whoever they want to and it is extremely common in the standard feudal medieval fantasy setting for minor lords to swear fealty to higher lords.
I believe the issue Lars is forseeing is that others will not want to use someone else's sworn knights, but I don't really see a way for them to get knighthoods and NOT have that problem.
@@aliciacordero7436 Lars was also somewhat confused as to what was actually being offered. He seemed to think it was basically the same deal as getting knighthoods from the Heraldic Society (ie. they would be beholden to the Fulcrum for continued legitimacy). And then there was his confusion between the War College and the Naval Academy. I think though that the fault lies mostly with Matt for not being explicit enough. He's already vacillated between whether or not a knighthood confers automatic spell registry or not. Originally, it seemed not. Then he said that knights were authorised with "spell and steel". Now he's back to knighthood and magic licenses being separate things (which seems to be how it was intended). Same deal withe the "no strings attached" knighthoods. Or Anna asking how she can get Judge a magic license. Or whether Sinmetal can be used in a suit of studded leather. Or what is actually needed to use the demon heart to enchant Judge's flamberge. I mean, it's pretty obvious that the players were _always_ going to want to get knighted without tying themselves down to a House whose aims they don't - at this stage - know. And Judge needs to be licensed to use magic, so Matt should have known from the outset exactly how that was possible (or impossible). And _clearly_ it would be unacceptable to rule that the Sinmetal can't be used to craft anything remotely useful to Leech (if it can't be used to make studded leather, it shouldn't even have been offered), or to keep adding extra enchanting requirements to the demon heart. Matt should have, and be giving, clear answers to this stuff. "No, you can't get a knighthood without allying with a Major House because [reasons]." OR "Yes, there is a way to get a knighthood without allying with a Major House by [course of action]." OR "You don't know the answer to that yet, you're going to have to get Angel to do more digging." At the moment, it seems that every time the players ask for information, Matt goes on a digression (usually an interesting one; Matt's setting is a major drawcard for me) instead of directly answering.
@@nickwilliams8302 In a way if they use the Heraldic Society to legitimize boots they could still end up beholden to them. The society might just "find" some proof that the documents Boots handed them was false and that he isn't a noble at all (and how dare he tarnish their good reputation!). Not sure if they would be willing to take the ding to their credibility though, but I guess with enough pressure coming from House Whats-it-Called anything is possible.
@@IronEntropy The documents they are after have nothing to do with Boots, so that particular line won't work. The Pursuviant was going to legitimise Boots _in return_ for the job they are currently doing. The Heraldic Society would have to basically admit that it was in the business of forging legitimacy. Which everyone _knows_ is the case but chooses not to admit. So, you're right, the Fulcrum probably _could_ undercut Boots' title, it's just that they'd need to throw the entire Society (and everyone legitimised by them) under the bus. In order for The Chain to be enough of a problem to the Fulcrum to justify this move, our heroes would probably need to be explicitly allied with one of the Fulcrum's rivals. At which point, The Chain would have the connections necessary to at least all get knighthoods from that House.
The problem is that the Privy Council would need to make a decision on a topic. Which they haven't for three years. They're deadlocked. Resurrecting a defunct Lesser House (hopefully with an extant quota of knighthoods) is the nearest thing to that.
I know the feeling at the beginning of the video is that Ajax is talking to one of his minions, but something tells me that isn't the case. The character from the pre-recorded section says that the Chain stole something of theirs, and the minion calls them, "Dread Sovereign". Now, I may be totally wrong and reading into this too much, but it sounds like they pissed off the Dead Lady when they retrieved to crown of House Valetta. Anyone else have some insight on this?
Traditional Euro and much of Asian knight-types would swear fealty and then be named "A knight of ...." Mid Eastern dervish and assazi had clan systems similar to the ninjas of Japan or the dingari(sp) of the Philippines. The clan/family systems could be pretty complicated to join. The oaths are still in the modern ceremonies. A knight of England swears fealty to the Queen. More honorific, now, of course. I've always been a fan of the "Knights of the Old Code" idea, myself. There it's usually another knight that inducts the newer knights. A little romanticized, but worth keeping. Question: Does "Slim" spend his down time coming up with phrases like "God Botherers" to throw out at key moments?
I initially thought Matt purposively put the Mimic and Gelatinous Cube together because of the immunity. I guess he didn't realize it, and missed this opportunity for additional wickedness!
I know you guys are like 8 episodes ahead, and I will repost this comment in the most recent video if I don't see a reply or implementation. But first off, I love the slightly smaller name tags, I think that looks a lot cleaner. Second, I would love to see the color in there be used as a sort of health bar, though I realize that would take a little bit of extra work on the production side, it would look awesome for the viewers during combat. You could even have it just change on increments of 25% max health instead of every time they take damage. The color would stop, leaving just white. But just having markers for "uninjured", "slightly injured", 50% health, "seriously injured", and "near death" (just a sliver of color at single digit hp). Love the stream, thanks for your hard work.
Yeah, surprisingly he did the math right but named the wrong mechanics. Expertise gets him +6, Charisma of 18 gets him +4, Guidance got him +4, plus his roll of a 1 makes 15.
So getting bonded in the stays is very possible but a complete nightmare whereupon, coming away from achieving your goal, you hate the organization in charge with every fiber of your being. Got it.
One thing that comes to mind; Didn't Boots give up all that he used to be, upon joining the Chain? Does his possible noble heritage conflict with the vow he took?
Mat, why so much time between when episodes go on podcast and RUclips? I live in Singapore. So I cannot watch the live stream. So I end up not watching the RUclips because I get the podcast version first. I would prefer to watch it rather than podcast it.

Really cool speculation.
Fish Whisky Never got the feeling that it was Ajax. But, I think you might be right on it being Lady Valette.
"The best way to fillet a Mind Flayer" - Slim
Me-Wait aren't Illithids Boneless?
Also Me- Shhhhh it sounds so cool don't question it.
"To Fillet" something is to cut it into strips of meat/flesh. Bones got nuttin to do with it, brother. You can fillet squid, no prob. ;)
Yeah, I believe you were thinking of "flay", which is a form of torture where one strips flesh from the muscle and bone of the still living victim.
Awesome stuff so far! We need a Chain of Acheron official soundtrack.
Please let the name of boots' Noble House be CALIGAE (latin for boots, specifically roman SOLDIER BOOTS)
Would that make his knights 'Caligulas'? 😁
Liquid Master
House Cobbleroni.
@@inomad1313 Which Boots is the sole survivor of.
2:36:46 How the hell does Töm know Winger lyrics? He's too young. +1 for the 80's reference. 👍
I do believe vellum was mostly calf and sheep skin
I'm stealing that encounter!
Matt busting out Demogorgon with that intro
Mimic has immunity to acid: a dungeon I made had a gelatinous cube with a mimic inside it, located in a closet
I initially thought Matt purposively put the Mimic and Gelatinous Cube together because of the immunity. I guess he didn't realize it, and missed this opportunity for additional wickedness!
Oh that's evil.
Is Matt not Matt a permanent addition?
yes. they had so much fun with him that they decided to integrate him as a permanent player.
@@michaelfinnerty7240 I'm watching these for the first time and having this confirmed makes me so dam happy
I can't wait to see the fan art of the cube 🤣
There's a piece of art out there I believe of the cube playing chess with the sarcophagus.
second time through absolutely love this channel
2:30 in and already overwhelmed with delight 😁
"God-Botherers"
A little goblin in me giggled after that intro. Haven't done that in a while.
One of the best! ( They are all the best imo)
if you pause at 47:14 it's like Matt's own "The Last Supper" painting
The noblest of boots!
Love Tom's Winger rendition... :)
Apparently not only 40K librarians are badasses. Riojan librarians are a strong second. :D
As someone who constantly uses a lot of tabs and gets berated for it, I understand Anna's tabs completely.
Make leech a Senior junior officer, under a probational period of course
Kevin Cullen I would actually enjoy RPing being the lower rank. It’s a fun dynamic.
I laughed for way to long from that Phil. Thanks for that!
Zslone2 from what?
"I can't get him to attack" Okay pact of the Chain master lets you but you lose your own attack :P
D: RUclips knows my name!! Oh No!
Thanks for your incredible support!!
I recommend you steel your mind fame has its own challenges
ummmmmmm...jack of all trades doesn't get added to checks you're proficient with.....
Yeah, surprisingly he did the math right but named the wrong mechanics.
Expertise gets him +6, Charisma of 18 gets him +4, Guidance got him +4, plus his roll of a 1 makes 15.
Goblin + Longbow = disadvantage.
Me watching the intro: RuhRoh

Looking forward to the gelatinous beholder...
Holy Crap!!!
You guys are up to 15 episodes!
When are you making a playlist so all the videos will play in sequence?
They are in a playlist.

"If YOU had of fought one WHIT below your skill..... I'd have given you a good scar to remind you......"
So getting bonded in the stays is very possible but a complete nightmare whereupon, coming away from achieving your goal, you hate the organization in charge with every fiber of your being. Got it.
Anyone else read Lirael? Getting some vibes from the second half of that
Some died, some were married, truth to tell I understand little of the difference....
One day Matt will use the term "Hedge-Knight", instead of Ronin.
Oooh new episode
Thumbs up just for the eggs.
15:00 Never get between a pregnant woman and food. You may become that which you are keeping her from.
One thing that comes to mind; Didn't Boots give up all that he used to be, upon joining the Chain? Does his possible noble heritage conflict with the vow he took?
I mean probably until it becomes useful to the Chain
It sounds like the title is going to be something manufactured. He probably wouldn’t have a title if not for The Chain and their need for knighthoods.
A librarian's gotta do what a librarian's gotta do...
44:20 boots talking like a true Riojan (sp?)
No L-Space or Orangutan reference makes me sad... also if you read without rhythm you wont attract the book-worm
Mat, why so much time between when episodes go on podcast and RUclips? I live in Singapore. So I cannot watch the live stream. So I end up not watching the RUclips because I get the podcast version first. I would prefer to watch it rather than podcast it.
May I suggest Sharpie markers for things like map sketches?
I like you folks.
Sir Boots of House Cobbleroni.
What order of pillars are the Roman buildings
The library being a place of knowledge, I might assume Ionic. But as a civic building, possibly founded by an emperor, I think Imperial style is likely. There's a nice ruin of a library in Ephesus that could be a good comparison.
What a cataclysm having two unrelated places called “War College” and “Military Academy” caused.
