I joined the Creator Revenue team at Discord a few months ago and wanted to share how things have been going. I haven’t done one of these day-in-my-life (DIML) videos in a while, so hope you like it! I also was so stoked to be a guest lecturer for the UCLA product management course. The students asked incredibly thoughtful questions. I’ve been wanting to find ways to help with education or teach somehow in a more IRL setting.
I’m actually headed to Tokyo soon. Maybe we’ll do a DIML as a PM in Tokyo?? What would y’all like to see?

yess this is an excellent question. maybe i can answer in a shorts video. it was a multi-part answer haha. the context came from a student who is starting a new role in the fall and wanted to figure out how to position herself well. super good question!

ayyee another AAPI product manager! i think this was a particularly calm down o_o now that i'm getting close to a ship date, things are picking up a lot and my calendar is gettin real heated. stressful days ahead of me 😅

I’m not sure how it would be possible given the sensitive nature of things we all work on as PMs, but I’m also curious how different PMs, and you specifically, approach documentation. I’ve recently been experimenting with how I do post release doc’ing after shipping new features, and my next thing I wanna try is tackling how we can improve doc’ing intra working on features. Anyway, might be too boring for a video, but either way, always looking forward to your videos. Thanks again for sharing!!

Thank you for mentioning that you're not a morning person and get up later than others might. It's a small notion, but when every successful person's morning routine is portrayed to involve getting up at 5 am, it's easy to feel bad about yourself when you like to sleep until 9. :)
oh boy i absolutely hate mornings x___x i am completely incapable of them.
but yes i totally get what you mean. all the "successful" people have these absurd 5 am morning routines. i think my body is just not wired that way, and that's okay ~

Just watching your vids are always so inspiring. I squiggle careered after watching your vids and am now having my first year review as a PM in edtech! And although it can be super stressful sometimes it's the best move I've ever made! Keep up the great content!

Hi Chloe! I love your channel, specifally watching how your career progresses and your career advice. I bought your resume templates a few months ago which were super helpful. Everyone go take a look! You mentioned in one of your videos you did some professional development for communication training (specifically geared towards women? ie. speaking "slower and lower"). I haven't been able to find anything like that out there, so I would love to know where you got this training and/or see a video on communication tips at work. :D thanks!

i did have some professional training, but it was a 1:1 coach a long time ago. I also joined a leadership training program to help me learn to speak. public speaking is a very specific skill. i don't think i have any solid recommendations right now, but i'm sure there are programs around you! sorry couldn't be more specific!

anywhere from 3 to sometimes 10 haha. But generally around 3-7.

I respect the balance you have with working a full time corporate job and still maintain a feminine pleasant demeanor especially when your boyfriend appears…it’s refreshing. Keep it up!
Heads up i have checked colab and went a rabitt hole where i checked all the participants who did the program from their listed demos, and almost 80% of them were not working as PM. I think as a rules of thumb is good to check and vet any program in general to see how they are in reality. I know they are your friends and they sponsor you but the data and facts are different.
My wife is AAPI and I'm indigenous native. We love watching your vids. It helps that I've been a PM for the past 4 years and love to see how other PMs handle it 😂. I have a major data science product release in a week, and always appreciate the candidness and showing that the job is stressful but still fun!

oh wow! what are you studying? I think I had a student club at UCLA reach out to me a year ago to do a chat, but we never ended up doing it. happy to do another one since UCLA is so close!
@@chloeshih i'm a design and media arts major (actually graduating this saturday haha)! there are definitely a lot of students here who are interested in product, so it would be awesome if you could come do another chat even though i won't be here anymore (and hopefully in person so you get to explore our beautiful campus) 😊. i'd be happy to connect you to the design club i was a part of, but even if not, you're still very welcome to come hang out in the sculpture garden (many people take walks there since it's an open campus)!

Hi, i graduated my bachelors in computers. Im not exactly interested in software but i wanna learn and earn well toooo.. SO am thinking of dng masters in management and get a management consultant job. work for 2-3 yrs so that i get to explore the fields and can decide on smth permanent to work at but am also kinda templted to product management coz of the work, tasks, and ofc the pay. DO u have any suggestions for me?? Like what life happens to pay me good and also not upset me for taking the decision?

Always curious how other product teams work. Does your Product Team meeting replace daily stand ups? In addition?
we have a weekly team kickoff on mondays. async standups on tues and thurs, and then sync standup on wed. no standup on fri. this is just something our team calibrated together on based on what we thought was most helpful for our progress

yep! i work remotely, so this is my usual day-to-day. i'll probably fly into the office in SF about 1-2x a quarter.
